Sophia Snow Place has its roots in the charitable spirit of the nineteenth-century Boston. In 1856, a group of civic-minded citizens raised money to operate and maintain the Roxbury Home for Aged Women. In 1962, after a century of care, the home was relocated and renamed Sophia Snow House, in honor of Sophia Snow. Today, the parent company, the Roxbury Home for Aged Women, has affiliated organizations: Snow House & Snow Place. These non-profit organizations continue their mission to provide comfort, companionship and security in a warm, homelike environment for seniors. 1
It’s Finally April! It’s finally April – Spring is here! So – time to dance, and time to cheer! It seemed the cold would never go away, Just getting colder and colder day after day.
I’d much rather have a load of April showers Than any more snow preventing my flowers! Cold and wet, ice and sleet – Starting to forget what it’s like to feel my feet!
But it’s starting to warm, and the snow is gone, The sun is coming out and the days are getting long! So goodbye Winter, and so long, snow! Spring is here – let those flowers start to grow!

April 2016 Park School Last Month! This month of April will be the last month the Park School students will be visiting with us- every Thursday at 2:15 p.m. Please don’t miss our last few times with our young friends! On Friday, April 29th, they will be coming at two different times to share special projects they have created for us in the Great Room:
9:15 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. 1:45 p.m. -2:45 p.m. These students worked very hard on their project so PLEASE try to make it!

The Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus, Ma was established in 1950 and is well-known for its delicious Chinese food and wonderful restaurant décor. Join us for a lunch you won’t want to miss!
Yoga Pizza Party with Nellie
Van will leave around 11:00 a.m.
Nellie, our Yoga instructor, is throwing a pizza party for all of her yoga class participants on Saturday, April 9th at 12:30 p.m. in the Great Room. There is no charge, but please sign up in the Activity Book if you wish to attend so that we can get a proper headcount.

The Red Sox are playing their home opener at Fenway Park on Monday, April 11th at 2:05 p.m. against the Baltimore Orioles.
Trip to Castle Island
Join us for a walk around the Island, and be sure to bring money for food at Sullivan’s!

A History of Howard Johnson's: How a Massachusetts Soda Fountain Became an American Icon
Howard Johnson created an orange-roofed empire of ice cream stands and restaurants that stretched from Maine to Florida and all the way to the West Coast. Popularly known as the Father of the Franchise Industry," Johnson delivered good food and prices that brought appreciative customers back for more. The attractive white Colonial Revival restaurants, with eye-catching porcelain tile roofs, illuminated cupolas and sea blue shutters, were described in "Reader's Digest" in 1949 as the epitome of "eating places that look like New England town meeting houses dressed up for Sunday." Boston historian and author Anthony M. Sammarco recounts how Howard Johnson introduced twenty-eight flavors of ice cream, the "Tendersweet" clam strips, grilled frankforts and a menu of delicious and traditional foods that families eagerly enjoyed when they traveled."

The Great Famine (in Irish an Gorta Mór,) or the Great Hunger was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland in the 1840s. During the famine, approximately 1 million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20 and 25 percent.

Twin River Casino, located in Lincoln, Rhode Island, is the state’s largest gaming and entertainment venue as well as its top tourist and cultural attraction! Formerly known as Lincoln Park, the renovated facility offers 162,000 square-feet of gaming space with over 5,000 gaming positions. The casino operates over 4,200 video slot machines and virtual table games (including blackjack and roulette), as well as 108 live table games including blackjack, roulette, craps, a poker room and about 18 fabulous dining outlets! *While the casino allows smoking, the entire second floor is
smoke-free, including slots, table games, and dining, and this is where we will be. Twin River Casino is only about 50 minutes away. We will leave around 9:30 a.m., check out the casino, play some games, and then have lunch at one of the restaurants inside!

Trip to the New England Aquarium
The Aquarium is a global leader in saving endangered turtles. A new interactive exhibit gives you hands-on experience with the process of diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating these fascinating animals. Plus, you'll learn how communities are coming together to protect turtle habitats and get a glimpse at some of the Aquarium's greatest turtle rescue success stories. In addition to three species of sea turtle, there are thousands of other aquatic animals to visit at the Aquarium. Don't miss the fearsome lionfish, the delicate leafy seadragons or go out back to see the Northern fur seals and California sea lions in action. And be sure to visit the Atlantic harbor seals out front.

Passover Seder with Rabbi Cherie
Passover (also known as Pesach or Pesah) begins on the evening of the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It is celebrated for seven days. On the first two nights, families and friends gather for the Passover Seders. All are welcome to come to the Great Room and learn more about Passover with Rabbi Cherie.
