ANNUAL REPORT Angela Cottrell, Lyn Brandon and I were lucky enough to be invited to play in the Armed Services Day. We enjoyed our game immensely with these fine men.

At the beginning of the year our long-awaited furniture arrived for the rejuvenation of the ladies’ locker room. Some vintage pieces were also recovered and given a new lease on life with the result being a very attractive setting on entry to our locker room. This is also an enhancement for our wedding market, as this space can now be referred to as a “bridal retreat”. A belated farewell to outgoing office staff was held in February at Gardenway Café. Sue, Sonya and Kathie were really touched with the send-off and loved their gifts. An Anzac Day Memorial service was held at the Club this year for the first time. This was conducted under the flagpole and was incredibly moving. The bugle player was the best I have heard and his rendition of the Last Post brought goose-bumps and tears to many eyes. I hope this will be a tradition that grows and continues.

Patty Tighe resigned from the Committee early in the year due to work and family commitments and we were very pleased to welcome Elaine Egerton into our ranks to fill the casual vacancy. Patty was very generous with her donations of fruit for guest days and raffle donations of expensive champagne. Her cheeky sense of humour also made working with her a lot of fun. I would like to thank our Committee in general for the work that they do and the willingness and flexibility to pitch in at all times. Jenny Johnston continues to deliver a wonderful service in her capacity as House-person. She has an endless supply of good ideas and often forgoes her own game of golf so that she can decorate tables on our special days. Management has put into place a number of Standard Operating Procedures to ensure that for every function and for every query we know who to turn to and what is expected. This has made the business of dealing with catering staff and management and the Golf Shop a very much smoother operation. There has been barista training for bar staff carried out in the latter part of the year which has seen a real improvement in the standard of coffee service, and a decrease in complaints. We

have a core group of wonderful staff who maintain their dignity and respectfulness at all times while occasionally weathering the odd storm of complaints. Thank you to all of the catering and bar staff. Thank you to all office staff and management as well. In August an Art Exhibition was held in conjunction with a Nine and Dine. This event was overseen by the very capable Robyn Elphinstone who did a wonderful job as curator. The standard of the art works was very high and quite varied. It was a fabulous evening and the exhibit ran for the whole weekend thanks to volunteers willing to donate their time. I would like to acknowledge Robyn Cuming for her Ikebana displays that enhance our rejuvenated locker room, and also pay tribute to Irene Raymond who has continued her services as our librarian. We appreciate your efforts. The News from the Red Tees electronic newsletter was launched this year. This wonderfully informative newsletter is published by Helen Placanica and has been overwhelmingly applauded by the lady members and by quite a lot of the male members, too. It is a terrific way to communicate with all of the lady members. We look forward to the Global Golf Ball draw and announcement of the Best Travel Photo. Helen is the most capable and supportive Vice President. Her knowledge of the Club Rules and Constitution, and of most

things, astounds me. As well as managing trophies this year, she also oversees the monthly volunteer gardening sessions maintaining the Jacaranda and Centenary Gardens. We have three outgoing Committee members this year: Julie Whan, our trusted Treasurer, who has served four years on Committee, three as Treasurer, and is earning a well-deserved retirement. Julie ran the sweeps again this year for the US Open and the British Open and has kept our finances running very smoothly, with the assistance this year of Finance and Administration Manager, Judith Hampson. Many thanks, Julie. Your caring nature and willingness

to pitch in has made working alongside you a real pleasure. Pip Holmes is also retiring after three years and will be sorely missed. Pip has been an invaluable and tireless worker as the Membership person leading the Ladies, Let’s Golf program and generally being watchdog, sheepdog and golf mother to them all. Thank you, Pip, and we hope you may continue to be involved in a minor role with this successful program next year. Lastly, our Captain Angela Cottrell, who has been on Committee for nine years, is retiring. We are so grateful for the selfless input that Angela has given to our Club. It has been

a privilege to work with Angela and her calm and gentle but firm nature is blended with a delightful sense of humour. Her conscientious and dedicated leadership has not affected her golf either. She has managed to win two Honour Board events this year while managing her role, and made it look effortless. We can’t thank you enough, Angela and I hope you enjoy stress free golf now and a relaxed retirement. I very much look forward to working with Ann Fell next year. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas break!

Standard of Play & Competitions The 2015 golfing year got off to a very smooth and uncomplicated start with the new GA handicapping system well in place and understood by all.

“I would like to thank all those ladies... who have always been willing to assist”

There have been no major interruptions to the golfing programme due to inclement weather this year and there was only the one course change at beginning of the year when holes 2 and 8 were taken out of play. We then played the same layout for almost all the year. The re-opening of holes 2 and 8 coincided with the close of the eclectic competition which certainly made the calculation of the results a lot easier. This also saw the completion of the greens renovation programme with two new wonderful holes which will be enjoyed by all. The landscaping that has also taken place around the course during the time of the renovations has also certainly enhanced the course. I am very proud to be a member of this Club and to play such a beautiful and challenging course. This year the Club fielded two Gold Pennant teams, one Silver team and a Bronze team. The extra Gold team came about when the Brisbane and District Ladies Golf Association (B&DLGA) reduced thenumber of players in a team from seven to five. This certainly gave a lot more ladies the opportunity to participate in the competition. The Gold Division 1 team finished fifth, the Gold Division 3 team had a great season to finish first, the Silver 1 team was very narrowly

08

beaten to finish second, and the Bronze team finished sixth. We also had our Interclub team which had a successful season only to be beaten by Indooroopilly and come second. I would also like to thank Joe Janison for giving up his time to run the two pennant clinics prior to the start of the pennant season. The B&DLGA has made changes to the pennant competition for 2016. The divisions will now be known as Divisions 1 to 8 and the handicap limits for divisions have changed accordingly. Divisions 1 to 3 (formerly Gold 1, 2 and 3) will have a maximum GA handicap of 18.0; divisions 4 to 5 (formerly Silver 1 and 2) will have a maximum GA handicap of 21.4; and divisions 6 to 8 (formerly Bronze 1, 2 and 3) will have a maximum GA of 32.0. There will be three handicap divisions for weekend pennants with a maximum GA handicap of 34.4. Junior pennants will have a maximum GA handicap of 40.4. The reason for these changes is to allow the promotion and relegation of teams right throughout the competition. The 2016 season will commence a little earlier with both midweek divisions 1 to 5 and weekend pennants commencing early April, and divisions 6 to 8 will commence at the beginning of June. The other changes made by the B&DLGA for the 2016 season are that all clubs must submit their player registration forms a minimum of two weeks prior to the commencement date of the pennant season. Also, there will no longer be any restrictions on

the use of motorised carts. Again this year all Honour Board events were well contested and there were a number of first-time winners. These events always prove very popular and are played with enthusiasm and great sportsmanship. I would like to thank the ladies who gave up their golf during the year to referee the finals. All players on matchplay days were given tables which showed the conversion of the match index to the current course layout which was a great help. The Club Championship this year was four rounds of stroke

for Grades A, B and C and two rounds for the Senior Salver. I would like to congratulate Lynne Conroy on winning yet another Club Championship. Congratulations also to Heather Richards on winning the B Grade and Bev Folliott on her win in the C Grade Championship. Congratulations must also go to Jenny Johnson for her win in the Senior Salver. The Joan Fletcher Matchplay Championship, open to 7-day ladies, was played in two divisions with two qualifying rounds in August and

matchplay over the following two weekends with the final decided on Saturday, 12 September. I am very thrilled to be the winner this year, defeating Catherine Hammond. Helen Caris was the winner of the Division 2, defeating Perin Wood in the final. Again, it was wonderful to have Joan Fletcher present on the day of the finals to make the presentations. The Foursomes Championship, as always played over 36 holes, had a great number of entries, 42 pairs in all. Congratulations to Kathryn Hillier and Lesa Lambert for winning this event for the second consecutive year.

Our Guest Day in May was a very successful day with great numbers, over 120 visitors in all from 18 Clubs. Our Executive Chef did himself proud with a wonderful lunch which I believe was still being talked about at other clubs in the following weeks. A big thanks must also go to the Committee ladies who gave up their day to prepare the room and raffles and everything else that is required to make the day the success that it is. Again this year the Invitation Day became an Open Day and attracted entries from outside. This day was also another successful day with 124 ladies playing in the field. The Brisbane Cup was played on a beautiful winter’s day in July and we had 28 entries in all. I am very pleased to report that the silverware stayed at home and was won by a very thrilled Robyn Elphinstone, her first win in this event after 20 years. The Tanner Cup was played in September and attracted a very small but exclusive field of only 16 ladies. This year the event was won by Anne Brett from McLeod with our own Sue Eagleton runner-up on a count back – so close! Anne had also been a member of Indooroopilly and was very humbled by her win as she knew a lot of the names of winners on the trophy before her. All the ladies that have come from other clubs to compete in our Open Days have been blown away by the changes to the course and have thoroughly enjoyed their day here. We are always very proud to show off our course to outsiders. We now have another two

10

annual events – the challenges between Royal Queensland and Indooroopilly Golf Clubs. The RQ Challenge has been held each year now since 2011 but this year was the inaugural Indooroopilly Challenge, at their request. I am pleased to report that we won both these trophies this year. I would like to thank all those ladies (both Committee ladies and other helpers) who have always been willing to assist with the many tasks involved in hosting open events and pennant days. We have had some very early (and dark) starts this year but all players have always been well catered for. There was also the necessity this year to have spotters and others out on the course to ensure that no one took a wrong turn and played the course out of order– your assistance is greatly appreciated. I would like to acknowledge and thank my Vice-Captain, Ann Fell, for her assistance and for always being there to talk things through. As this is my last year as captain, I hand over to Ann knowing that with her years of golfing experience and expertise she will be a wonderful captain. To our President, Sue, it has been an absolute pleasure working with you and I enjoyed our year immensely. Also, to all our other Committee ladies, thank you also for your assistance and support. We have worked well together, which makes our voluntary jobs rewarding in providing the environment we do for all our fellow lady golfers. Finally, to all the staff, thank you. To Joe Janison and his staff in the Golf Shop nothing

has ever been too much trouble and the golfing programme has run so well this year with your assistance. A special thank you to Reece McRae for his assistance and advice – it has certainly helped me in my decision making, and the quick response to emails sent at some odd hours certainly put my mind at rest. Also to Geoff Kuehner, Peter Collins and all the office staff, your prompt assistance is also very much appreciated.

Report from the Saturday Ladies’ Representative The Saturday ladies’ 2015 golfing season commenced on Saturday, 31 January, with 46 ladies playing a 4BBB Stableford followed by a complimentary lunch in the Tennyson Room which was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone.

commenced in early May, and we fielded one team in each division. Unfortunately playing conditions for the first match for Division 1 team were far from satisfactory due to inclement weather, however, the girls were undeterred and persevered, finishing the season in seventh position. Division 2 came in fifth, and both teams avoided relegation. A special thank you must go to all the ladies who came along to prepare morning tea, start the field and act as on-course spotters for the at-home weekend pennants day. The feedback from the players from other clubs was that it was the best organised and best prepared course they had played this season.

Fun days during the year included the Irish-themed Stableford to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in March, with The 11th hole jackpot, with the mulligans and much mischief. winner’s tee shot landing within 1 American Independence Day metre of the pin, was instigated was celebrated on 4 July, with this year. Our annual Memorial Day was held on 25 July, and this year sadly we had another name to add to the trophy - that of our dear friend and fellow golfer, Judy Akhurst, who passed away late last year. Margaret Dowzer spoke with much warmth about the golfing experiences of both Lesley McMillan and Judy Akhurst. Judy’s husband, John, joined us at lunch to present the winner’s trophy to Jan Dixon. The first of our Guest Days was held in August, this year sponsored by SmartProp Realty, and we thank them, and Angela Fong, very much for their generosity and beautiful trophies that were much appreciated. Executive Chef prepared a delicious lunch and all guests spoke very favourably of their golfing and dining experience. August also saw our annual pennant and caddy golf and lunch, hosted by Pennant Captain Catherine Hammond. Thanks, Catherine, for your hard work in organising and managing our pennants teams this year. Your dedication and attention to detail is much appreciated. Catherine has acted as Pennant Captain for the past two years has decided to step aside from the position. Barb Singleton has kindly accepted the role for next year. The Joan Fletcher Matchplay Championship was held during September in perfect conditions and with an exceptional standard of play. Division 1 matchplay final between Catherine Hammond and Angela Cottrell was one by Angela 4/3. I had the pleasure of referring this match, and can report that Angela played an almost faultless game.

The Division 2 match between Perin Wood and Helen Caris was a tussle to the 19th, with Helen coming in the winner. Ladies’ President, Sue Eagleton, arranged for Joan Fletcher to attend the finals day, taking her around the course to watch the matches and joining the ladies in the Clubhouse for lunch, after which she presented the trophies to the winners. The last of our weekend Honour Board events, the Nat Green Foursomes, was played on 24 October with Catherine Hammond and myself managing a win against Christina Murray and Debra Calder. One of the highlights of the year for the Saturday ladies is our

annual weekend away. This year 30 of us headed to Twin Waters, playing golf at Noosa Springs and Twin Waters, a hike up Mt Coolum (for the energetic), and a barbeque feast prepared by our expert barbecue chefs Catherine Hammond and Jody Pezet, with delicious desserts provided by a number of the ladies. It was a weekend of much fun and lots of laughter, cementing the strong friendships that already exist and introducing some of our new members to the fun.

Chef and the bar staff for their friendly and efficient service throughout the year. Finally, I would like to thank the retiring members of the committee for their friendship and assistance during the year. In particular, I would like to say a special thank you to Angela Cottrell without whose help and advice it would not have been possible for me to ensure the smooth running of the Saturday competitions.

I would like to thank the all the Di Hall staff in the Golf Shop and office Saturday Ladies’ Representative for their assistance in making the Saturday competitions and events run smoothly. I would also like to thank Executive
