The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! Happy Feast of St. Francis! This is a great day for Franciscans as we celebrate our Holy Father St. Francis of Assisi. This entire month is taken up with the celebration so please join us as often as you can. Last week the Church in the United States and especially here in the metropolitan New York area was taken up by the inspiring visit of Pope Francis. It seemed that wherever he went turned into holy ground and whatever he said inspired all of us to holiness. Here are a few highlights from some of his speeches and homilies for your own inspiration and reflection: “Let us remember the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Mt 7:12). This Rule points us in a clear direction. Let us treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated. Let us seek for others the same possibilities which we seek for ourselves. Let us help others to grow, as we would like to be helped ourselves…The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development. This conviction has led me, from the beginning of my ministry, to advocate at different levels for the global abolition of the death penalty. I am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity, and society can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes.” (Address to the US Congress) “In a special way I would like to express my esteem and gratitude to the religious women of the United States. What would the Church be without you? Women of strength, fighters, with that spirit of courage which puts you in the front lines in the proclamation of the Gospel. To you, religious women, sisters and mothers of this people, I wish to say ‘thank you,’ a big thank you… and to tell you that I love you very much,” (Vespers at St. Patrick’s Cathedral). “Any harm done to the environment, therefore, is harm done to humanity.” (United Nations)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults are formally received into the Roman Catholic Church. San Francisco de Asís en la Historia de la Humanidad
Francisco ha quedado como aquél que, en su espíritu de pobreza y desprendimiento, probablemente más se pareció a Jesús en la historia de la cristiandad. El “Pobre de Asís” sigue conmoviendo por su capacidad infinita de reconciliación con todo y con todos, respetado no sólo por creyentes de todas las religiones, sino también por no creyentes. Es, quizás, el santo más ecuménico, razón por la cual se realizaron encuentros interreligiosos mundiales en Asís, la “ciudad de Francisco”. Por su devoción a los animales como criaturas de Dios, ha sido abrazado por la cultura del escultismo particularmente por la relación hacia los lobos. Es el patrono de los veterinarios y de los forestales (Ingenieros de Montes, Ingenieros Técnicos Forestales, Agentes y Guardas Forestales, y otros cuerpos similares) y, por extensión, de los movimientos ecologistas que empeñan sus esfuerzos en el cuidado (Continúa en la siguiente columna)
de la naturaleza y del ambiente. El mundo cristiano está lleno de iglesias y de altares dedicados a él y por él su nombre, antes bastante raro, se hizo habitual en toda Europa. Pío XII lo proclamó, con Catalina de Siena, patrono de Italia el 18 de junio de 1939. Tiene numerosos epónimos de ciudades o localidades (la capital de la República del Ecuador, formalmente llamada San Francisco de Quito o la ciudad de San Francisco en los Estados Unidos, por ejemplo). Aunque algunos sostienen que la creación del pesebre es anterior a Francisco, fue sin dudas él quien popularizó el Nacimiento o escena del nacimiento de Jesús. Al entrar a rezar en la ermita de Greccio en la Navidad de 1223, Francisco sintió el deseo de representar en vivo el nacimiento del Niño Jesús, y ese hecho fue decisivo en la universalización de esa tradición. En 1986, a petición de las asociaciones belenistas de todo el mundo, el Papa Juan Pablo II proclamó patrono universal del “Belenismo” a San Francisco de Asís. Francisco no fue el creador de la llamada Oración de la paz de san Francisco (“Señor, hazme un instrumento de tu paz...”), poema francés publicado en 1912 y atribuido al fraile italiano desde 1916 hasta fines del siglo XX. Sin embargo, se la considera una síntesis hasta el presente anónima del ideario vivido por el “Santo de Asís.” En virtud de la devota peregrinación de San Francisco a Oriente, y de su voluntad de reconciliar a todos los hombres, los franciscanos son custodios de los Santos Lugares. La presencia franciscana en Tierra Santa, que con diversas vicisitudes se ha mantenido siempre, adquirió estabilidad y carácter oficial de parte de la Iglesia en 1342, año en que el papa Clemente VI encomendó a la Orden Franciscana la “custodia de los Santos Lugares”. Cuando, en 1992, se cumplieron los 650 años de tal comisión, Juan Pablo II envió al Ministro General de la Orden un mensaje de felicitación a la vez que de exhortación a perseverar en el encargo recibido de la Iglesia. El papa Francisco eligió este nombre en honor a san Francisco de Asís el 13 de marzo de 2013. Ministerio Hispano de Santa María y justo posible, mientras formamos las nuevas generaciones, con una educación que no puede dar nunca la espalda a los «vecinos», a todo lo que nos rodea. Construir una nación nos lleva a pensarnos siempre en relación con otros, saliendo de la lógica de enemigo para pasar a la lógica de la recíproca subsidiaridad, dando lo mejor de nosotros. Confío que lo haremos. Nuestro mundo está afrontando una crisis de refugiados sin precedentes desde los tiempos de la II Guerra Mundial. Lo que representa grandes desafíos y decisiones difíciles de tomar. A lo que se suma, en este continente, las miles de personas que se ven obligadas a viajar hacia el norte en búsqueda de una vida mejor para sí y para sus seres queridos, en un anhelo de vida con mayores oportunidades. ¿Acaso no es lo que nosotros queremos para nuestros hijos? No debemos dejarnos intimidar por los números, más bien mirar a las personas, sus rostros, escuchar sus historias mientras luchamos por asegurarles nuestra mejor respuesta a su situación. Una respuesta que siempre será humana, justa y fraterna. Cuidémonos de una tentación contemporánea: descartar todo lo que moleste. Formación de Fe para Adultos
La justicia brota de la fe es un proceso de formación para hispanos sobre el compromiso social y la íntima conexión entre la fe y el amor hacia el prójimo. Esta obra promueve el desarrollo espiritual de los que anhelan profundizar la práctica de su fe en un ambiente tan desafiante como el de hoy y en el que somos llamados para la Nueva Evangelización, como nos invita el Papa Francisco: “vayan sin miedo a servir.” En Santa María, inicialmente, se formará un grupo pequeño de entre 8 y 12 personas para tomar este taller. Programa de Asistencia Médica de la Iglesia de Santa María. Todos los lunes de 7:30 a 9 PM un grupo de doctores y
enfermeras voluntarios atienden las necesidades básicas de las personas que no cuentan con seguro medico. Ellos vienen del Hospital de San José en Paterson. No se necesita cita previa. La clínica se encuentra localizada en el sótano del Centro Carnevale (10 Lenox Ave. Pompton Lakes, NJ) en el salón 003. Se cuenta con un intérprete al español.
ATENCION: El programa de asistencia médica de Santa María
NO realizará más exámenes para participar en deportes en las escuelas. Estos exámenes deben ser hechos por el médico en cada escuela, y son gratis. Los estudiantes deben asistir a las sesiones que cada escuela programa para aquellos que quieren participar en actividades deportivas.
Despensa de Comida de Santa María. Esta despensa gratuita de comida o Food Pantry es un ministerio de nuestra parroquia que ayuda a aproximadamente 175 familias a la semana (o sea aproximadamente 480 personas entre niños y adultos). Preparación para la Confirmación en español
Este programa consiste de 2 años de preparación de septiembre a junio. Es un camino juvenil muy interesante y una oportunidad para crecer en la Fe Católica. RICA consiste de cuatro periodos de formación: Periodo del Pre-Catecumenado; Periodo del Catecumenado; Periodo de Purificación e Iluminación y el Periodo Postbautismal de catequesis/Mistagogia. El propósito primario de RICA es la iniciación de los adultos y niños no bautizados que han llegado a la edad de la razón, sin embargo el Rito también se extienda a los adultos bautizados pero no catequizados.
