Part II 1.
Course Aims: Based on the foundation laid in the prerequisite course LT3347 Commercial Translation, this module further enable students to explore the skills and knowledge in translating business documents, with special emphasis on the translation of financial documents.

Outline the financial and legal environments of Hong Kong. Discover and learn about the principles and techniques of translating documents used in the commercial world, with special reference to the translation of financial, legal and paralegal texts. Identify, evaluate and formulate a workable translation of various types of financial documents.

Lectures Basic techniques and concepts of the translation of commercial and financial texts are introduced in lectures with authentic examples as illustration. Tutorial Translation tasks are planned for students to finish in a given period of time to train students’ efficiency in translation. eLearning Students are encouraged to make use of the web (e.g. Canvas) for research and exchange of views.

Type of assessment activities
Weighting (if applicable) Timed exercises: students will work on 20% translation tasks in class within a limited time to simulate the authentic situation in the commercial world. Group Project: students will form a 30% group to conduct an in-depth study of a particular topic of commercial or financial translation, and write a commentary of about 1,500 words. Examination: a 2-hour formal 50% examination will be set to assess students’ understanding of the topics covered and their application of skilles learned.
