DIVERSITY & THE LAW LJI (Qld) Vice-President, Andrew Boe will explore the legal careers of criminal defence lawyer Deng Adut, a former child soldier and Sudanese refugee and Tony McAvoy SC, Australia’s first indigenous silk. President of the Queensland Court of Appeal, Justice Margaret A McMurdo AC will provide closing remarks on what promises to be a thought provoking evening. DENG ADUT Deng Adut is a renowned Sudanese community leader and acclaimed lawyer. He was recognised for his achievements by NSW Premier Mike Baird invitation to give the 2016 Australia Day Address. Having come to Australia as a refugee, following life as a child soldier in Sudan, Deng put himself through law school at Western Sydney University becoming the first in his family to obtain a tertiary degree. Deng is now a formidable advocate practicing in the areas of criminal, family, employment and international law.

TONY MCAVOY SC Tony McAvoy was appointed Senior Counsel in NSW in 2015. Prior to that he practiced as a solicitor in Queensland. He is the first indigenous person in Australia to be appointed to the rank of senior counsel. His people are the Wiri People of the Central Queensland region. Tony has a substantial and national native title practice. In 2011 he led a team that secured native title recognition for the Quandamooka people of North Stradbroke Island.
