To provide professional service in processing and disseminating public records to the general public, other law enforcement agencies and employees of the City of Fort Lauderdale in an appropriate, courteous, and timely manner.
The Records Unit is open to the public:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We are closed each Wednesday and Sunday. Records may be reached by phone 24 hours a day. The Records Unit is responsible for maintaining and distributing offense reports, supplemental reports, accident reports (vehicular and marine), arrest reports, miscellaneous incident reports and tow slips in accordance with Florida State Statute (FSS) 119. This division handles approximately 230,000 reports per year that occur within Fort Lauderdale city limits. Reports may be requested either by mail or in person. Phone, fax, or email requests will not be accepted nor will reports be faxed or emailed to requestors. Requests by mail must include the required fee along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Prior to mailing your request, call Records to confirm the report has been received and obtain a cost for the report. Please be sure to include as much information as possible when making your request such as the case number, date, location of incident and type of incident. Accident Reports
The State requires that anyone requesting an accident report within the first 60 days of its occurrence must complete an affidavit specifying why you are entitled to that report. You may use the link provided to print an Adobe PDF copy of the affidavit. Crash Report Affidavit [PDF] If you are requesting your report by mail, please provide Records with a signed and notarized copy of the crash report affidavit along with your request. After 60 days the affidavit is not required to obtain an accident report. Accident reports over a year old may be obtained by contacting Tallahassee at: 850-617-3414 or 850-617-3416.
In accordance with F.S.S. 119.07(4)(d), an applicable service charge may be assessed for certain requests. Arrest Reports
When an arrest is made you are immediately entitled to a copy of the arrest PC. Incident reports involving an arrest must be filed by the State Attorney’s Office prior to being released to the public. Immigration and Background checks can only be conducted for the jurisdiction handled by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Therefore, you must either be a resident or formerly a resident of the City to obtain a background check. Broward County Background checks may be obtained from the Broward Sheriff’s Office located at 2601 West Broward Boulevard.
