The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! I just returned from voting. Since this column is due to the bulletin editor by Tuesday morning, I don’t know who the next President of the United States will be. However, by the time you are reading this we all will know. A long, vitriolic, divisive, difficult and maybe even a bit un-American campaign season is behind us, but now the real work begins. It’s time for us Americans to unite and heal our nation and move forward. As Catholics we have a special obligation to lead the way in reconciliation. So here are a few of my thoughts as we move ahead. First of all, no matter what you may have heard or read from any misinformed priest, bishop or surrogate, no one is going to hell based on their vote for President. That is completely contrary to Catholic teaching. Voting/following your conscience is not worthy of eternal condemnation! It is our patriotic duty to accept the legitimacy of the election and restore confidence in our democracy. It is contrary to Catholic teaching to fan the flames of hatred against Muslims or any religious group. It is contrary to Catholic teaching to fan the flames of hatred against immigrants, minorities, the disabled and women. It is contrary to Catholic teaching to undermine the dignity of the human person from the moment of conception to natural death. This includes, but is not limited to, abortion, euthanasia, poverty, hunger and homelessness. We must care for the human person every step of the way. We must recommit ourselves to the Catholic and American value of solidarity within society. Venomous and personal attacks on one another only serve to tear down the person and damage our solidarity within society. We must return to the basic American principle of respecting one another’s views when they differ from our own without demonizing the person. In short, sisters and brothers, we must work toward reconciliation in our nation at every turn. We must work to include all people, regardless of faith, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability or even immigration status in our American way of life. That is not only our American duty, it is our Catholic duty. Let us pray for our new President, our nation and our world. May the United States always be leaders in peace, the first to welcome those in need and a beacon of hope for all the world. And now, in honor of our veterans who made the American way of life possible, a reflection: Is Veterans Day really a holiday or is it a holy day? It’s a holy day when we reflect on the many women and men who serve in the military and put their own lives in danger for the freedom we enjoy. (The Pastor’s Desk is continued in the next column)

It’s a holy day when we stop our daily life routines to celebrate at a parade, pause our businesses and close our schools to show joy and respect for what our veterans have done for us and our nation, for the rights and freedoms that they have won and protected through all these years. It’s a holy day when we remember and give thanks to God for our veterans who have returned safely from areas of conflict and war. It’s a holy day when we stop everything we are doing and consider what government and military benefits, or lack thereof, our veterans who are returning from service find here at home. It’s a holy day when we feel the pain of guilt and experience the sadness for those veterans who are homeless, disabled from combat wounds, affected by mental, emotional and spiritual agonies and are left alone in their suffering. It’s a holy day when we mourn our own selfishness for forgetting to thank and be ever grateful to those veterans who have served our country yet feel unappreciated, lonely and forgotten. To all veterans, today and every day, we say thank you for protecting us and keeping us safe. We bless you, pray for you and pledge to never forget the sacrifices you have made for our country and for us. It was a great week at St. Mary’s and I’m looking forward to another one to come. Lectio Divina

L

ectio Divina (Latin for Divine Reading) is a traditional Benedictine practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer intended to increase the knowledge of God’s Word. It is not a theological analysis, but a sharing time for reflection and interpretation. On three Mondays during Advent [December 5, 12 and 19] from 7:00 - 8:00 PM in the Prayer Room, we will use the Gospel for the following Sunday as our point of reference. The hour-long practice goes back to monastic times when the same scripture passage is read three times with a period of silence after each reading, followed by participants sharing their insight into God’s Word (if they choose). This is based on two beliefs: 1) silent time gives time to listen to God and 2) each of us carries a piece of the Good News within our hearts.

Our students are involved in many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) investigations. The First Grade recently studied living and non-living things in a hands-on investigation. Our Sixth Graders created a polyhedron package large enough to hold an item. Our Seventh Grade did an investigation exploring the relationship between distance, time and average speed. JUEVES 24 DE NOVIEMBRE 2016 – Día de Acción de Gracias

Los domingos a las 9:00 AM en el Centro Carnevale (10 Lenox Ave, Pompton Lakes, NJ). Durante el año celebramos varias eucaristías en la iglesia principal. Algunas celebraciones son bilingües como la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, la Vigilia Pascual, y el Día de Acción de Gracias (Thanksgiving)

En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús iba de camino a Jerusalén…le salieron al encuentro diez leprosos, los cuales se detuvieron a lo lejos y a gritos le decían: “Jesús, maestro, ten compasión de nosotros”. Al verlos, Jesús les dijo: “Vayan a presentarse a los sacerdotes”. Mientras iban de camino, quedaron limpios de la lepra. Uno de ellos, al ver que estaba curado, regresó, alabando a Dios en voz alta, se postró a los pies de Jesús y le dio las gracias. Ése era un samaritano. Entonces dijo Jesús: “¿No eran diez los que quedaron limpios? ¿Dónde están los otros nueve? ¿No ha habido nadie, fuera de este extranjero, que volviera para dar gloria a Dios?” Después le dijo al samaritano: “Levántate y vete. Tu fe te ha salvado”. (Lucas 17:11-19) Los católicos no sólo debemos celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias con profundo espíritu de oración, agradecimiento y alegría, sino que la celebración de este día nos debe llevar a recordar que nuestra vida como católicos es una constante acción de gracias. A través de nuestros actos de la vida cotidiana, que deben todos ellos dar gloria a Dios, y de manera especial a través de la celebración de la Eucaristía.

JUEVES 17 DE NOVIEMBRE 20156– Memoria de Santa Isabel de Hungría

Isabel se quedó viuda siendo aún joven, dedicó su riqueza a los pobres, construyó hospitales. A partir de su canonización en 1236 se convirtió en un símbolo de caridad cristiana para toda Europa. Santa Isabel se suele comúnmente representar como una dama vestida con ropas reales y corona cargando un cesto lleno de rosas. Esto es una alegoría al milagro de las rosas que ocurrió cuando estaba obsequiando pan a los pobres y fue sorprendida por su cuñado Conrado de Turingia. La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Santa María será el 11 de diciembre. Habrá una procesión que saldrá de la Iglesia de San Antonio a las 6:00 AM, cruzando Butler, Bloomingdale, y Riverdale, para llegar a Santa María en Pompton Lakes a las 8:30 AM. La Misa bilingüe, con Mariachis, será a las 9AM en la Iglesia Principal. Después de la Misa habrá una fiesta en el Centro Carnevale. ¡Todos están invitados!

RICA

El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA) es el proceso en el cual los adultos se preparan para recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación y 1ra Santa Comunión). El propósito primario de RICA es la iniciación de los adultos y niños no bautizados que han llegado a la edad de la razón, sin embargo el Rito también se extienda a los adultos bautizados pero no catequizados. Los Sacramentos se reciben durante la Vigilia Pascual, en la noche del Sábado Santo. Información: Milagros Anto, o Padre Gonzalo. Visita y Sacramento de Unción de los Enfermos

Los enfermos necesitan ser acompañados por su familia. La Iglesia es una Gran Familia. Permítanos organizar la visita semanal, para acompañar, dialogar, escuchar, compartir un tiempo con el enfermo o el adulto mayor que ya no puede venir solo a la Eucaristía. Sacramento de la Reconciliación (Confesión)—En el año

realizamos varias jornadas de Reconciliación (Confesión), especialmente en Cuaresma y Adviento. Todos los sábados a las 4:30 PM un sacerdote está disponible en el confesionario de la iglesia principal para escuchar su Confesión en inglés. Quinceañeras

En México y otros países de Latinoamérica, la celebración de la Quinceañera comienza con una Misa de agradecimiento. La quinceañera llega a la iglesia con sus padres, padrinos y la corte de honor (las damas y los chambelanes). Para más información por favor comunicarse con el Padre Gonzalo

Programa de Asistencia Médica de la Iglesia de Santa María. Todos los lunes de 7 a 9 PM un grupo de doctores y enfermeras

voluntarios atienden las necesidades básicas de las personas que no cuentan con seguro medico. Ellos vienen del Hospital de San José en Paterson. No se necesita cita previa. Despensa de Comida de Santa María. Esta despensa gratuita

de comida o Food Pantry es un ministerio de nuestra parroquia que ayuda a aproximadamente 175 familias a la semana (o sea aproximadamente 480 personas entre niños y adultos). Te rogamos que ahora nos des los dones de: la iluminación, para que a través de nuestras oraciones podamos conocer tu santo y verdadero mandamiento; el discipulado, para que podamos responder a las necesidades de la comunidad y no sólo a nuestras propias necesidades, y la gratitud, para que, por el bien común, podamos entregarnos a los demás. ¡Que descubramos lo que nos corresponde hacer a cada uno, y que hagamos buenas obras cada día por el bien de tu Reino!
