fter The Bourne Supremacy, action films changed, and changed dramatically: most notably in the Bond series. James Bond could no longer be as suave and above it all. Previously he coasted through action scenes, unruffled and untroubled, but Supremacy heralded something bracing, thrilling and new, and at that point it had been a good long while since James Bond had been any of those things. Now the men who wrought that change – Matt Damon (our memoryafflicted title character) and Paul Greengrass (the director behind The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum) – are back with another slew of revelations about Jason Bourne’s past, along with some of the best car chases since… well, since the last time Paul Greengrass made a film. The fourth film in the franchise (or the fifth, if you include the spin-off with Jeremy Renner, The Bourne Legacy – which essentially goes unacknowledged in this return to the main series) sees Bourne drawn out of the shadows when an ex-colleague/

ally (Julia Stiles) attempts to leak a mass of data about the CIA’s black ops programme. The above is all you need to know in terms of story. Although Greengrass’ latest isn’t light on plot – it fits in a new nemesis (CIA Director Robert Dewey, played with amusing nefariousness by the ever-craggy Tommy Lee Jones), a new potential ally (Heather Lee, a CIA agent with unclear motivations and alliances, played by actress du jour Alicia Vikander) and yet more highly capable assassins – it’s far more focused on action. Hammering home that point: Matt Damon has a total of 25 lines in the film, and the first chase begins barely 10 minutes in; and it arguably only concludes upon the rolling of the credits 110 minutes later. Audiences have become so used to the shakycam verisimilitude of Greengrass’ films that they’re almost inured to it. Which is a shame, because the choreography and the editing in Jason Bourne is some of the best you’ll ever see. It’s intense, brutalising and bruising. And

as impressive as the classic car chases are in Bullitt and The French Connection, if you put them alongside what Damon and Greengrass have achieved (in any one of their films together), they pale in comparison. Whilst other film-makers rely on CGI to pull off vast destruction or to mask the fact that the cars in a chase are going quite a bit slower than we’re being led to believe, Greengrass is a practical film-maker who will genuinely execute the insanity we end up seeing on screen. That realism does wonders for a film. Christopher Nolan understood this when he made his Dark Knight films, but Greengrass’ work is the clear precursor. Although Jason Bourne doesn’t dig any deeper into who Bourne is (that work was mostly complete by the end of Supremacy), the action is almost unparalleled. And so long as Matt Damon’s boyish looks refuse to fade – and they currently show no signs of doing so – then it seems likely he’ll continue to play the part for a while to come.

etelah munculnya The Bourne Supremacy, film laga telah berubah secara drastis, terutama film-film James Bond. James Bond tak dapat lagi bersikap flamboyan dan seolah tak bermasalah. Sebelumnya, ia melalui rangkaian adegan laga dengan tampilan rapi dan pembawaan tenang, namun Supremacy menawarkan sesuatu yang segar dan baru. Pada saat yang sama, James Bond sudah tidak lagi mencerminkan hal-hal tersebut. fter the recent highly successful reimagining of classic Disney properties like Sleeping Beauty (which became the often ingenious Maleficent), Cinderella and The Jungle Book, we now get a slightly different spin on that formula: rather than take an animated film and find a new way into the story, we’re being treated to one of Disney’s slightly lesser-known efforts, Pete’s Dragon. The original was a bit of an oddity, with its catchy songs, but surprisingly dark storytelling. Here it’s reimagined by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) as a simpler, more elegant tale, with echoes of The Iron Giant. For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales… until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. charging pace of the summer blockbusters that it was up against – and that’s no bad thing. Lowery draws out strong performances from the whole cast, and is careful not to overuse his trump card: Elliot himself. His version of Elliot keeps a few key things from the first incarnation, as nods to the first film: he has the same notable colouring, taciturn manner and, most amusingly, the same chunky jaw. And he somehow manages to look both photorealistic and cartoon-y in almost equal measure. (Almost certainly another nod to the original, which showed Elliot as a towering 2D cartoon.) In typical comic-book style, the film serves up a devilish mixture of characters, but also features the return of a few of the good guys from BvS: DoJ, Ben Affleck and Ezra Miller (Batman and The Flash, respectively), in cameo appearances. When faced with Enchantress, an evil witch-goddess who has taken over the body of archaeologist Dr. Moone, Amanda Waller (a US Government Intelligence Officer) assembles an expendable squad of super-villains, called Task Force X, to combat the witch-goddess and keep her from annihilating the city. Currently incarcerated for their many crimes, the "Suicide Squad" seemingly have very little to lose… Will Smith stars as Deadshot, a lethal assassin, desperate to seek vindication from his daughter for his wrongdoing. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie – The Wolf of Wall Street) plays the crazed former psychologistturned-villain girlfriend of the disturbed, criminally insane Joker, who is played with maniacal gusto by Jared Leto. embarks on his own personal mission to free Harley from Waller’s Suicide Squad. Leto’s performance leaves the biggest mark, despite the relatively small amount of time he spends on screen; his depiction of the Joker is as psychotic and deranged as one could hope. The film is pacey, if occasionally a little befuddled, and is jam-packed with plenty of villain-on-villain dust-ups, which makes it more than entertaining enough to distract from the absence of a concrete purpose for the story. DC Comics fans looking for a fun, lively way to spend a couple of hours will not be disappointed. Catch Suicide Squad on board today!

he life and times of Florence Foster Jenkins make for an unusually uplifting tale. Here we have a wealthy woman who used her finances to foist her tone-deaf voice upon the people, and yet it’s put across as a cause for celebration. Through some strange alchemy, Meryl Streep (who plays the socialite with an ear for music, so long as she isn’t the one making it) and Stephen Frears (the director) transform the true-life tale from being one about entitlement, to one about succeeding against the odds. And more than that, they make it a film about passion. The story: In 1940s New York, Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep), a New York heiress and socialite, obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to almost everyone else it was often (really very often) a little (by which I mean "a lot") on the flat side. Her husband and manager, St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant, in fine form), an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge. Unpicking why Frears’ tale works so well is no simple task. A reasonable conclusion would be that we’ve been driven to pity the deluded woman. But the film goes out of its way to keep Florence from being the butt of the joke. back in pain or fall to the ground laughing; and this latter type are very swiftly escorted from her vicinity, lest she cotton on to the fact that her voice is anything but heavenly. Making matters even stranger, when Florence takes it upon herself to perform at Carnegie Hall, she becomes the unlikely hero of the soldiers that are temporarily home from war. Perhaps there is no explaining her appeal – or maybe you’ll be able to decipher it yourself…

udy Habibie is an Indonesian drama directed by Hanung Bramantyo, and it was first released in June 2016. The film is based on the book Rudy: Story of The Young Visionary by Gina S. Noer. It tells the story of a visionary youth named Rudy, who would go on to become Indonesia’s third president. This film was preceded by Habibie & Ainun, which told of how Rudy fell for Ainun (it broke Indonesian cinema records with an impressive total attendance of 4.7 million). Ever since he was little, Rudy was passionate about aeroplanes, and learnt all he could about them. Even when he was fleeing for his life because of the Japanese invasion – and his village was being bombed – he still risked his life by running home in order to retrieve his books and his precious model plane. Years later, he started studying aerospace engineering in Aachen, Germany, and dreamt of building an Aerospace Industry in Indonesia. He made some close friends during this period, including Ayu (a classmate of his, who was also from Indonesia) and Ilona (a pretty witty Polish girl). They were like-minded people and were willing to support Rudy’s vision of Indonesia’s future. However, a group of former Army students believed that Indonesia needed another way of moving forward. The tension between these two groups ran high. Eventually, differences turned into arguments, and arguments turned into fights… Despite that, Rudy could not be diverted from his dream, and he pursued it regardless of the hurdles that were thrown in his way.

In the sequel, Cinta is now the owner of a mini pop art cafe in Jakarta. Being selected for this position isn’t easy, as the standards are high, and if the candidates can’t react quickly and professionally to a given situation, then they could put a number of lives at risk.

It all began in 1929, when Antony Noghès (the general commissioner for the automobile club of Monaco) put forward the idea of the race so that Monaco might join the United International Automobile Association Clubs. ade in Bali is an Indonesian drama/ comedy created by Michael Pohorly and Steve Barkman. It was first aired in December 2014. Last year, it won the Best Short Film at the Niagara Film Festival and was nominated for the Director's Guild Short Film of the Year.  The story tells of a young American called Skip (Mike Lewis), who arrives in Bali for the first time. He hires a tour guide called Made (Slamet Rahardjo), who shows him around. Made has been running a local tour guide business for many years and has his own souvenir shop. There’s more to Skip’s trip than meets the eye, but he keeps this information to himself. Made treats Skip as a normal tourist at first, but he soon happens upon the real reason for Skip’s visit to Bali. Although this is a short film, it’s very well crafted. The principal actors Mike Lewis and Slamet Rahardjo are excellent in their respective roles, and manage to suggest a lot about their characters' backstories via little more than slight changes in their expressions. It also doesn’t hurt that Made

in Bali is a rather good-looking short film. The breathtakingly picturesque scenes and the background music make this a very engaging and diverting 15-minute short. The ending is well judged, and will likely resonate very strongly with a large number of viewers – and don’t be surprised to find that it lingers longer in the memory than you might initially have imagined.

ntitled Beyond the Bloodhounds, Adia Victoria’s debut album showcases a coming together of poetry and country rock music, draped in American flair, and musically is nothing short of a soaring success. Debut albums are often the opportunity for artists to put their own stamp on the industry, to really show what they’re about and set up their own stall. Beyond the Bloodhounds however takes the

opportunity to beckon the finger, instead presenting an alluring listen that charms and displays a range of musical techniques. The music on this album wavers between upbeat and thought-provoking tempos, sometimes even within songs. “And Then You Die”, for example, seems to flutter between genres, ending on quite a funky note after quite a slow start. The album as a whole is something of a musical venture. Toe-tapping at times,

“... an alluring listen that charms and displays a range of musical techniques...” the combination of rock 'n’ roll riffs mixed up with laid-back beats really opens up a wonderful exploration into sound. Then you have the voice of Adia Victoria, which is quite possibly the main point of intrigue on the album. Possessing a countrystyle accent, the style of singing is haunting, almost as if she were singing through mist and fog, painting a picture for the listener, but one that isn’t quite fully visible. Whereas to describe Victoria as a songwriter would technically be correct, as alluded to earlier on, this music is more like poetry that has been decorated with a country/rock music feel. As is often the case with poetry, journeys are embarked upon and stories are told and Victoria shares her inner feelings within these songs – and again as mentioned, they leave you wanting to hear more. This is an album you don’t have to be a music lover to listen to, but you really should be checking out if you are drawn to discovering new sounds and artists. It’s hard to liken to a present-day, or even yesteryear, artist but if you think Lana del Rey with more country guitar work and experimental sound you’d be on the right track – this coming from a Lana del Rey fan, it should be added. A highly recommended, hypnotic listen that will definitely have you coming back for more. On board now.
