Hazards Identification Hazard Overview: Product is corrosive. Ingestion of large quantities can be fatal. May cause eye damage, severe skin irritation or chemical burns. When heated, gives off oxygen which may increase fire hazard. Pungent chlorine odor. Workers must be trained in the safe handling of this material. Hazard Health Effects: Contact with Eyes: Severe irritation, pain and reddening. Prolonged exposure may cause blindness. Contact with Skin: Reddening, irritation. Prolonged/repeated exposure may result in ulcerating burns and dermatitis. Ingestion: Burning and irritation of mouth, throat, esophagus and other digestive system tissues will occur immediately upon contact. Ingestion of large quantities may be fatal. Inhalation: May cause pulmonary irritation, irritation of mucus membranes, coughing or sore throat. Inhalation of large volumes may cause chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema Hazards Information: HMIS: Health – 3; Flammability - 0 Reactivity - 1 4
First Aid Measures
Eye or Skin Contact: Inhalation: Ingestion:
Immediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes, including under eyelids. Remove contaminated clothing. Get medical attention immediately. Remove from exposed area to fresh air. Get medical attention immediately. If conscious, drink large quantities of water or milk. Do not induce vomiting. DO NOT use acidic antidotes such as sodium bicarbonate. Get medical attention
immediately. Do not give anything to unconscious person. 5
Fire-fighting Measures
Flash Point: Extinguishing Media: Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: oxides of sodium.
Non flammable. Flood with water, foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Wear NIOSH certified gas mask and full protective clothing and eyewear. Avoid inhalation of fumes and body contact. Stay upwind and out of low lying areas. In fire, this material may decompose and produce irritating vapors, chlorine gas and Contain fire run-off water to prevent environmental damage. Toxic fumes may be liberated by contact with acid or heat. Vigorous reactions can occur with oxidizable materials and organics.
6 Spills:
Disposal:
Accidental Release Measures Small spills may be neutralized with agents such as bisulfites or ferrous salt solutions. Some heat will be produced. Keep on alkaline side and dilute with copious amounts of water. Concentrated solutions will seriously affect aquatic life. Do not allow material to enter sewers, streams, ponds or storm conduits. Personnel involved in cleanup must avoid body contact with NIOSH approved respirator protection, triple gloves, chemically resistant suit and rubber boots. Drench contaminated material with water. Contain spills in plastic drums. Do not absorb spills with flammable materials such as sawdust or combustible absorbents. Dispose in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations.

Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance: Boiling Point: Freezing Point: pH: 10
Hazardous Polymerization: Incompatibility:
Hazardous Decomposition Products:
Stable in concentrations below 10%. Stability decreases with concentration, light, heat, fire, decrease in pH and metallic impurities. Naturally decomposes with age. Below zero, high strength product may form pentahydrate crystals which may become unstable when they are dry. Will not occur. Strong acids, ammonia, oxidizable materials, most metals (aluminum, tin, copper, nickel, iron) heat sources, light sources. organic halogen compounds, organic nitrocompounds. Contact with ammonia and amine-based compounds can generate toxic chloramine compounds. Sodium chlorate, sodium chloride, hypochlorous acid, chlorine gas. Thermal decomposition, or burning, may produce hydrochloric acid.
