Mock Study Section Career Development Activity The ASPO Early Career Special Interest Group (SIG) will be offering a Mock Study Section as a new career development activity on Saturday afternoon (12-3 p.m. on Saturday, March 10) before the 2018 meeting at the Roosevelt Hotel. Registration will be accepted for up to 20 people to participate in a Mock Study Section to gain experience with the NIH grants review, scoring, and discussion process. You can register for the Mock Study Section from the ASPO home page: https://aspo.org/ after the 2018 abstract submission opens. There is no fee to participate in the mock review session; however, you must register for the mock review session and the ASPO meeting prior to December 15, 2017. Dr. Paul Jacobsen, Associate Director of the NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Science’s (DCCPS) Healthcare Delivery Research Program (HDRP), will act as the Study Section Chair. A webinar that includes instructions for completing the revised NIH grant review templates will be held in mid-January and video-recorded for those who are not able to attend the live webinar. The webinar will be open to anyone interested in learning more about completing NIH grant reviews, and will be required for participants in the Mock Study Section. All participants in the Mock Review Session at ASPO must sign a confidentiality pledge prior to receiving grants for review. Participants will review previously-submitted NIH grants; the activity does not include review of participant-submitted applications. Grant applications for review will be assigned following the webinar, and reviews will be due in mid to late February. Application mechanisms may include R03, R21, and R01s and will represent funded and unfunded grants that have gone through the review process. This is a great way for graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, clinical fellows, and all early career cancer researchers to gain experience and insight around the grants review process that can be applied to their own submissions in the future.
