Quantum gravity effects via exotic R{sup 4} Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Krol, J. [University of Silesia, Institute of Physics, Katowice (Poland) 2010-04-15 The arguments are given that exotic smooth R{sup 4}'s can be considered as the natural counterpart for geometry of quantum gravity in some limits. This follows from the relations of these exotics to Z{sub 2} orientifolds of WZW models on SU(2), abelian gerbes on S{sup 3}, generalized Hitchin's-Gualtieri structures as well gerbes on some orbifolds. Nonstandard smoothings of R{sup 4} seem to carry also quantum information about spacetime and gravity. (Abstract Copyright [2010], Wiley Periodicals, Inc.) 2. Finiteness due to cellular structure of R[sup N] I. Quantum mechanics Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Kehagias, A.A. (Inst. of Theoretical Physics, Univ. of Nijmegen (Netherlands)); Zoupanos, G. (Dept. of Physics, National Technical Univ., Athens (Greece)) 1994-04-01 We construct a cellular space which has as a continuous limit the Euclidean space R[sup N]. We consider quantum mechanics on this cellular space and we examine in particular an harmonic oscillator and a free particle on the cellular R[sup 1], R[sup 2] respectively. In both cases we find that the energy spectrum is bounded from above. (orig.) 3. No-hair theorem for R/sup 2/ models Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Mijic, M.; Stein-Schabes, J.A. 1988-04-07 We show that the R + epsilonR/sup 2/ theory for homogeneous spacetimes, satisfies all the energy conditions required by the NHT and so it inflates. As the universe approaches this phase it has already become sufficiently flat and isotropic, leaving the production of density perturbations to the de Sitter phase. When there is an explicit ..lambda.. term i.e. R + epsilonR/sup 2/-2..lambda.. the model naturally leads into double inflation, where the R/sup 2/ inflationary phase is followed by the ..lambda.. driven phase. We investigate the constraints on the initial conditions due to the finite duration of the R/sup 2/ inflation and find that all but a small fraction of the available phase space leads to sufficient inflation. [Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Nuclear Medicine and Tracer Kinetics, Osaka (Japan) 2009-04-15 Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves migration of macrophages into inflamed areas. (R)-[{sup 11}C]PK11195 binds to peripheral benzodiazepine receptors, expressed on macrophages, and may be used to quantify inflammation using positron emission tomography (PET). This study evaluated methods for the quantification of (R)-[{sup 11}C]PK11195 binding in the knee joints of RA patients. Data from six patients with RA were analysed. Dynamic PET scans were acquired in 3-D mode following (R)-[{sup 11}C]PK11195 injection. During scanning arterial radioactivity concentrations were measured to determine the plasma (R)-[{sup 11}C]PK11195 concentrations. Data were analysed using irreversible and reversible one-tissue and two-tissue compartment models and input functions with various types of metabolite correction. Model preferences according to the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and correlations between measures were evaluated. Correlations between distribution volume (V{sub d}) and standardized uptake values (SUV) were evaluated. AIC indicated optimal performance for a one-tissue reversible compartment model including blood volume. High correlations were observed between V{sub d} obtained using different input functions (R {sup 2}=0.80-1.00) and between V{sub d} obtained with one- and two-tissue reversible compartment models (R {sup 2}=0.75-0.94). A high correlation was observed between optimal V{sub d} and SUV after injection (R {sup 2}=0.73). (R)-[{sup 11}C]PK11195 kinetics in the knee were best described by a reversible single-tissue compartment model including blood volume. Applying metabolite corrections did not increase sensitivity. Due to the high correlation with V{sub d}, SUV is a practical alternative for clinical use. (orig.) 8. Nuclear localization of Bel1 has been reported to rely on two proximal basic motifs R{sup 199}H{sup 200} and R{sup 221}R{sup 222}R{sup 223} that likely function together as a bipartite nuclear localization signal. In this study, we report that mutating R{sup 221}R{sup 222}R{sup 223}, but not R{sup 199}H{sup 200}, relocates Bel1 from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, suggesting an essential role for R{sup 221}R{sup 222}R{sup 223} in the nuclear localization of Bel1. Although not affecting the nuclear localization of Bel1, mutating R{sup 199}H{sup 200} disables Bel1 from transactivating PFV promoters. Results of EMSA reveal that the R{sup 199}H{sup 200} residues are vital for the binding of Bel1 to viral promoter DNA. Moreover, mutating R{sup 199}H{sup 200} in Bel1 impairs PFV replication to a much greater extent than mutating R{sup 221}R{sup 222}R{sup 223}. Collectively, our findings suggest that R{sup 199}H{sup 200} directly participate in Bel1 binding to viral promoter DNA and are indispensible for Bel1 transactivation activity. - Highlights: • The R{sup 221}R{sup 222}R{sup 223} residues are essential for the nuclear localization of Bel1. • Although not affecting the nuclear localization of Bel1, mutating R{sup 199}H{sup 200} disables Bel1 from transactivating PFV promoters. • The R{sup 199}H{sup 200} residues directly participate in Bel1 binding to viral promoter DNA. • Mutating R{sup 199}H{sup 200} in Bel1 impairs PFV replication to a much greater extent than mutating R{sup 221}R{sup 222}R{sup 223}. 16. [L.D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics RAS, Moscow 119334 (Russian Federation); Kazan Federal University, Kazan 420008, Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation) 2016-11-10 The R+R{sup 2}, shortly named “R{sup 2}†(“Starobinskyâ€) inflationary model, represents a fully consistent example of a one-parameter inflationary scenario. This model has a “graceful exit†from inflation and provides a mechanism for subsequent creation and final thermalization of the standard matter. Moreover, it produces a very good fit of the observed spectrum of primordial perturbations. In the present paper we show explicitly that the R{sup 2} inflationary spacetime is an exact solution of a range of weakly non-local (quasi-polynomial) gravitational theories, which provide an ultraviolet completion of the R{sup 2} theory. These theories are ghost-free, super-renormalizable or finite at quantum level, and perturbatively unitary. Their spectrum consists of the graviton and the scalaron that is responsible for driving the inflation. Notably, any further extension of the spectrum leads to propagating ghost degrees of freedom. We are aimed at presenting a detailed construction of such theories in the so called Weyl basis. Further, we give a special account to the cosmological implications of this theory by considering perturbations during inflation. The highlight of the non-local model is the prediction of a modified, in comparison to a local R{sup 2} model, value for the ratio of tensor and scalar power spectra r, depending on the parameters of the theory. The relevant parameters are under control to be successfully confronted with existing observational data. Furthermore, the modified r can surely meet future observational constraints. 17. It will provide kinematically complete measurements with high efficiency, acceptance and resolution, making possible a broad physics program with rare-isotopes. CALIFA (CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of gamma-rays and high energy charged pArticles), is a complex detector based on scintillation crystals, that will surround the target of the R{sup 3}B experiment. CALIFA will act as a total absorption gamma-calorimeter and spectrometer, as well as identifier of charged particles from target residues. This versatility is its most challenging requirement, demanding a huge dynamic range, to cover from low energy gamma-rays up to 300 MeV protons. This fact, along with the high-energy of the beams determine the conceptual design of the detector, presented in this paper, together with the technical solutions proposed for its construction. 24. [PET Center, Center for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Ontario (Canada); Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario (Canada) 2010-10-15 Introduction: R-[{sup 11}C]-SKF 82957 is a high-affinity and potent dopamine D{sub 1} receptor agonist radioligand, which gives rise to a brain-penetrant lipophilic metabolite. In this study, we demonstrate that systemic administration of catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitors blocks this metabolic pathway, facilitating the use of R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957 to image the high-affinity state of the dopamine D{sub 1} receptor with PET. Methods: R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957 was administered to untreated and COMT inhibitortreated conscious rats, and the radioactive metabolites present in the brain and plasma were quantified by HPLC. Under optimal conditions, cerebral uptake and dopamine D{sub 1} binding of R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957 were measured ex vivo. In addition, pharmacological challenges with the receptor antagonist SCH 23390, amphetamine, the dopamine reuptake inhibitor RTI-32 and the dopamine hydroxylase inhibitor {alpha}-methyl-p-tyrosine were performed to study the specificity and sensitivity of R-[{sup 11}C]-SKF 82957 dopamine D{sub 1} binding in COMT-inhibited animals. Results: Treatment with the COMT inhibitor tolcapone was associated with a dose-dependent (EC{sub 90} 5.3{+-}4.3 mg/kg) reduction in the lipophilic metabolite. Tolcapone treatment (20 mg/kg) also resulted in a significant increase in the striatum/cerebellum ratio of R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957, from 15 (controls) to 24. Treatment with the dopamine D{sub 1} antagonist SCH 23390 reduced the striatal binding to the levels of the cerebellum, demonstrating a high specificity and selectivity of R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957 binding. Conclusions: Pre-treatment with the COMT inhibitor tolcapone inhibits formation of an interfering metabolite of R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957. Under such conditions, R-[{sup 11}C]SKF 82957 demonstrates high potential as the first agonist radiotracer for imaging the dopamine D{sub 1} receptor by PET. 51. First-order invariants and cohomology of spaces of embeddings of self-intersecting curves in R{sup n} Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Vasiliev, V A [Steklov Mathematical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (Russian Federation) 2005-10-31 We study the cohomology of the space of generic immersions R{sup 1}{yields}R{sup n}, n{>=}3, with a fixed set of transversal self-intersections. In particular, we study isotopy invariants of such immersions when n=3, calculate the lower cohomology groups of this space for n>3, and define and calculate the groups of first-order invariants of such immersions for n=3. We investigate the representability of these invariants by rational combinatorial formulae that generalize the classical formula for the linking number of two curves in R{sup 3}. We prove the existence of such combinatorial formulae with half-integer coefficients and construct the topological obstruction to their integrality. As a corollary, it is proved that one of the basic 4th order knot invariants cannot be represented by an integral Polyak-Viro formula. The structure of the cohomology groups under investigation depends on the existence of a planar curve with a given self-intersection type. On the other hand, one can use the self-intersection type to construct automatically a chain complex calculating these cohomology groups. This gives a simple homological criterion for the existence of such a planar curve. 52. Karakteristik Pasien Tonsilitis Kronis pada Anak di Bagian THT-KL RSUP Dr. M. The cosmological instantons of topology S{sup 1}×S{sup 3}, which set up these initial conditions, have the shape of a garland with multiple periodic oscillations of the scale factor of the spatial S{sup 3}-section. They describe underbarrier oscillations of the inflaton and scale factor in the vicinity of the inflaton potential maximum, which gives a sufficient amount of inflation required by the known CMB data. We build the approximation of two coupled harmonic oscillators for these garland instantons and show that they can generate inflation consistent with the parameters of the CMB primordial power spectrum in the non-minimal Higgs inflation model and in R{sup 2} gravity. R^4 Counterterm and E_{7(7)} Symmetry in Maximal Supergravity Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Broedel, Johannes; /Potsdam, Max Planck Inst. /Leibniz U., Hannover; Dixon, Lance J.; /SLAC 2011-07-06 The coefficient of a potential R{sup 4} counterterm in N = 8 supergravity has been shown previously to vanish in an explicit three-loop calculation. The R{sup 4} term respects N = 8 supersymmetry; hence this result poses the question of whether another symmetry could be responsible for the cancellation of the three-loop divergence. In this article we investigate possible restrictions from the coset symmetry E{sub 7(7)}/SU(8), using a double-soft scalar limit relation derived recently by Arkani-Hamed et al. In order to implement the relation, we make use of the fact that the R{sup 4} term occurs in the low-energy expansion of closed-string tree-level amplitudes. We find that the matrix elements of R{sup 4} that we investigated all obey the double-soft scalar limit relation, suggesting that E{sub 7(7)} is also respected by the R{sup 4} term. 176. Fourteen patients underwent Gd-EOB-enhanced MRI and {sup 99m}Tc-mebrofenin HBS after portal vein embolization within 24 h. Relative enhancement (RE) and hepatic uptake index (HUI) were determined from MRI; and T{sub max}, T{sub 1/2} and mebrofenin uptake were determined from HBS, all values separately for RLL and LLL. Mebrofenin uptake correlated significantly with HUI and RE for both liver lobes. There was strong correlation of mebrofenin uptake with HUI for RLL (r{sup 2} = 0.802, p = 0.001) and RE for LLL (r{sup 2} = 0.704, p = 0.005) and moderate correlation with HUI for LLL (r{sup 2} = 0.560, p = 0.037) and RE for RLL (r{sup 2} = 0.620, p = 0.018). Correlating the percentage share of RLL function derived from MRI (with HUI) with the percentage of RLL function derived from mebrofenin uptake revealed a strong correlation (r{sup 2} = 0.775, p = 0.002). Both RE and HUI correlate with mebrofenin uptake in HBS. The results suggest that Gd-EOB-enhanced MRI and {sup 99m}Tc-mebrofenin HBS may equally be used to separately determine right and left liver lobe function. (orig.) 177. Sampathkumaran, E. V. [Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Mumbai 400005 (India) 2014-06-07 We report the observation of electric polarization in the magnetically ordered state of the Haldane chain compound, Gd{sub 2}BaNiO{sub 5}, with strongly correlated magnetic and dielectric properties. The results of dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate two magnetic transitions, one corresponding to the anti-ferromagnetic order at T{sub N} ∼ 55 K and the other to spin-reorientation transition at T{sub SR} ∼ 24 K. The dielectric permittivity (ϵ{sub r}{sup ′}) and loss (tanδ) also exhibit anomalies in the vicinity of T{sub SR} and T{sub N}, respectively. Below the spin-reorientation transition, concurrently magnetic-field-induced spin-flop and the metaelectric transitions are observed at a critical magnetic field in isothermal magnetization and magneto-dielectric results, respectively. Another interesting finding is that Δϵ{sub r}{sup ′} (=(ϵ{sub r}{sup ′}(H)−ϵ{sub r}{sup ′}(0))/ϵ{sub r}{sup ′}(0)) changes its sign at the critical magnetic field. The origin of the observed magneto-electric effect is discussed on the basis of spin–phonon coupling. 178. Work in this direction started with the R + R{sup 2} Starobinsky model, whose supersymmetric extension was derived in the late 80's and was recently revived in view of new CMB data. Models dual to higher-derivative theories are subject to more restrictions than their bosonic counterparts or standard supergravity. The three sections are devoted to a brief description of R + R{sup 2} supergravity, to a scale invariant R{sup 2} supergravity and to theories with a nilpotent curvature, whose duals describe non-linear realizations (in the form of a Volkov-Akulov constrained superfield) coupled to supergravity. Domain decomposition algorithms for mixed methods for second-order elliptic problems Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Chen, Zhangxin; Ewing, R.E.; Lazarov, R. 1996-04-01 In this paper domain decomposition algorithms for mixed finite element methods for linear second-order elliptic problems in R{sup 2} and R{sup 3} are developed. A convergence theory for two-level and multilevel Schwartz methods applied to the algorithms under consideration is given. It is shown that the condition number of these iterative methods is bounded uniformly from above in the same manner as in the theory of domain decomposition methods for conforming and nonconforming finite element methods for the same differential problems. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the present techniques. 40 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs. 182. Anomalous diffusion in correlated continuous time random walks Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Tejedor, Vincent; Metzler, Ralf, E-mail: [email protected] [Physics Department T30 g, Technical University of Munich, 85747 Garching (Germany) 2010-02-26 We demonstrate that continuous time random walks in which successive waiting times are correlated by Gaussian statistics lead to anomalous diffusion with the mean squared displacement (r{sup 2}(t)) {approx_equal} t{sup 2/3}. Long-ranged correlations of the waiting times with a power-law exponent alpha (0 < alpha is derived. We present a very lengthy and complicated general recurrence relation among the matrix elements of r{sup k}. Some useful recurrence relations among the matrix elements are studied in some special cases, which include the matrix elements of rk calculated in the same state vertical bar n'l'>, the different states vertical bar n'l{sub 1}'> and vertical bar n'l{sub 2}'>, the k= vertical bar l{sub 1}-l{sub 2} vertical bar and k=l{sub 1}+l{sub 2}+1. On the basis of the integral properties of the product of two associated Laguerre polynomials multiplied by a weight factor, we obtain a new recurrence relation between the matrix elements r-{sup k-2} vertical bar n'l{sub 2}'> and r{sup k-1} vertical bar n'l{sub 2}'>. Another recurrence relation involving the matrix elements of logarithmic functions ln(2r/{alpha}'n') ({alpha}'=a{sub 0}mc{sup 2}/ZE{sub n}') is investigated. 193. Determining ozone flux in plants using a model for calculating stoma opening width; Bestimmung des Ozonflusses in Pflanzen anhand eines Modells zur Berechnung der Spaltoeffnungsweite Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Werner, W.; Bueker, P. [Trier Univ. (Germany). Inst. fuer Geobotanik 2000-07-01 To investigate the dose response of clover-leaves to ozone exposure a model of the stoma opening width was developed. It was based on leaf conductance measurements of white clover-clones who were carried out under field-conditions and under defined conditions for the parameters temperature, photosynthetic active radiation and vapour pressure deficit in the laboratory. The field-model predicts the leaf conductance with a smaller coefficient of determination (r{sup 2}=0,61 respectively 0,57) than the lab-model (r{sup 2}=0,98) but is more suitable to estimate potential ozone fluxes. Large-N volume independence in conformal and confining gauge theories Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Unsal, Mithat; /SLAC; Yaffe, Laurence G.; /Washington U., Seattle 2010-08-26 Consequences of large N volume independence are examined in conformal and confining gauge theories. In the large N limit, gauge theories compactified on R{sup d-k} x (S{sup 1}){sup k} are independent of the S{sup 1} radii, provided the theory has unbroken center symmetry. In particular, this implies that a large N gauge theory which, on R{sup d}, flows to an IR fixed point, retains the infinite correlation length and other scale invariant properties of the decompactified theory even when compactified on R{sup d-k} x (S{sup 1}) {sup k}. In other words, finite volume effects are 1/N suppressed. In lattice formulations of vector-like theories, this implies that numerical studies to determine the boundary between confined and conformal phases may be performed on one-site lattice models. In N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, the center symmetry realization is a matter of choice: the theory on R{sup 4-k} x (S{sup 1}){sup k} has a moduli space which contains points with all possible realizations of center symmetry. Large N QCD with massive adjoint fermions and one or two compactified dimensions has a rich phase structure with an infinite number of phase transitions coalescing in the zero radius limit. 196. As the formulation is manifestly invariant under the U-duality group E{sub 11−D}(ℤ), our resulting expressions can be expressed in terms of automorphic forms. In the low energy expansion, we find terms in the M-theory effective action of type R{sup 4}, ∇{sup 4}R{sup 4} and ∇{sup 6}R{sup 4} with automorphic coefficient functions in agreement with independent derivations from string theory. This provides in particular an explicit integral formula for the exact string theory ∇{sup 6}R{sup 4} threshold function. We exhibit moreover that the usual supergravity logarithmic divergences cancel out in the full exceptional field theory amplitude, within an appropriately defined dimensional regularisation scheme. We also comment on terms of higher derivative order and the role of the section constraint for possible counterterms. 198. Biosorption of palladium(II) from aqueous solution by moss (Racomitrium lanuginosum) biomass: Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Sari, Ahmet; Mendil, Durali; Tuzen, Mustafa [Department of Chemistry, Gaziosmanpasa University, Tokat 60250 (Turkey); Soylak, Mustafa [Department of Chemistry, Erciyes University, Kayseri 38039 (Turkey)], E-mail: [email protected] 2009-03-15 The biosorption potential of Racomitrium lanuginosum as aquatic moss biosorbent for the removal of Pd(II) from aqueous solution was investigated. The effects of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, and temperature on the biosorption processes were systematically studied. Experimental data were modeled by Langmuir, Freundlich and DubininRadushkevich (D-R) isotherms. Langmuir isotherm model (R{sup 2} = 0.994) fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich isotherm model (R{sup 2} = 0.935). The monolayer biosorption capacity of R. lanuginosum biomass for Pd(II) was found to be 37.2 mg/g at pH 5. The mean free energy was calculated as 9.2 kJ/mol using the D-R isotherm model (R{sup 2} = 0.996). This result indicated that the biosorption of Pd(II) was taken place by chemical ion-exchange. The calculated thermodynamic parameters, {delta}G{sup o}, {delta}H{sup o} and {delta}S{sup o} showed that the biosorption of Pd(II) on R. lanuginosum biomass was feasible, spontaneous and exothermic under examined conditions. Experimental data were also tested using the biosorption kinetic models. The results showed that the biosorption processes of Pd(II) on R. lanuginosum followed well pseudo-secondorder kinetics at 20-50 deg. C (R{sup 2} = 0.999) 202. Effect of modularity on the Glauber dynamics of the dilute spin glass model Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Park, Jeong-Man [The Catholic University of Korea, Bucheon (Korea, Republic of) 2014-11-15 We study the Glauber dynamics of the dilute, infinite-ranged spin glass model, the so-called dilute Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (dSK) model. The dSK model has sparse couplings and can be classified by the modularity (M) of the coupling matrix. We investigate the effect of the modularity on the relaxation dynamics starting from a random initial state. By using the Glauber dynamics and the replica method, we derive the relaxation dynamics equations for the magnetization (m) and the energy per spin (r), in addition to the equation for the spin glass order parameter (q{sub α}β). In the replica symmetric (RS) analysis, we find that there are two solutions for the RS spin glass order parameter (q): q = 0 which is stable for r < 1/2 and q = (-1+4r{sup 2})/(32r{sup 4}) which is stable for r > 1/2 in the non-modular system and q = 0 which is stable for r < 1/ SQRT(8) and q = (-1+8r{sup 2})/(128r{sup 4}) which is stable for r > 1/ SQRT(8) in the completely modular system. By substituting the proper q values into the equations for r, we find that the relaxation dynamics of r depends on the modularity, M. These results suggest that, in the context of evolutionary theory, the modularity may emerge spontaneously in the point-mutation-only framework (Glauber dynamics) under a changing environment. 203. Experimentally obtained CCS values are typically matched with theoretical CCS values from Trajectory Method (TM) and/or Projection Approximation (PA) calculations. In this paper, predictive models for CCS of deprotonated phenolics were developed using molecular descriptors and chemometric tools, stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR), principal components regression (PCR), and partial least squares regression (PLS). A total of 102 molecular descriptors were generated and reduced to 28 after employing a feature selection tool, composed of mass, topological descriptors, Jurs descriptors and shadow indices. Therefore, the generated models considered the effects of mass, 3D conformation and partial charge distribution on CCS, which are the main parameters for either TM or PA (only 3D conformation) calculations. All three techniques yielded highly predictive models for both the training (R{sup 2}{sub SMLR} = 0.9911; R{sup 2}{sub PCR} = 0.9917; R{sup 2}{sub PLS} = 0.9918) and validation datasets (R{sup 2}{sub SMLR} = 0.9489; R{sup 2}{sub PCR} = 0.9761; R{sup 2}{sub PLS} = 0.9760). Also, the high cross validated R{sup 2} values indicate that the generated models are robust and highly predictive (Q{sup 2}{sub SMLR} = 0.9859; Q{sup 2}{sub PCR} = 0.9748; Q{sup 2}{sub PLS} = 0.9760). The predictions were also very comparable to the results from TM calculations using modified mobcal (N2). Most importantly, this method offered a rapid (70%. The final formulation for both tracers took no longer than 100 min with an overall RCY of {approx}40%. It provided [{sup 18}F]tracers with a purity >96% and a typical specific activity of 25-35 GBq/{mu}mol. Autoradiographic images of (R)-[{sup 18}F]MH.MZ (5) and [{sup 18}F]DD-1 (4) showed excellent visualization and selectivity of the 5-HT2A receptor for (R)-[{sup 18}F]MH.MZ and less specific binding for [{sup 18}F]DD-1. The binding potential (BP) of (R)-[{sup 18}F]MH.MZ was determined to be 2.6 in the frontal cortex and 2.2 in the cortex (n=4), whereas the cortexto-cerebellum ratio was determined to be 3.2 at steady state (n=4). Cortex-to-cerebellum ratios of (R)-[{sup 18}F]MH.MZ were almost twice as much as compared with the racemic [{sup 18}F]MH.MZ. Thereby, equal levels of specific activities were used. High uptake could be demonstrated in cortex regions. Conclusion: Labeling of both novel tracers was carried out in high RCY. Autoradiography revealed (R)-[{sup 18}F]MH.MZ as a very selective and affine 5-HT2A tracer (K{sub i}=0.72 nM), whereas [{sup 18}F]DD-1 showed no reasonable distribution pattern on autoradiographic sections. The influence of body mass index and gender on coronary arterial attenuation with fixed iodine load per body weight at dual-source CT coronary angiography Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Zhu, Xiaomei; Zhu, Yinsu; Xu, Hai; Tang, Lijun; Xu, Yi [Dept. of Radiology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical Univ., Nanjing, Jiangsu (China)], E-mail: [email protected] 2012-07-15 Background. Most of current coronary CT angiography protocols are not adapted to body weight (BW) or cardiac output and no literature about influence of gender on coronary attenuation are reported with administration of a fixed iodine load per BW. Purpose. To determine the influence of body mass index (BMI) and gender on coronary arterial attenuation if contrast material dose is linearly adjusted to a patient's BW at dual-source CT coronary angiography (DSCT-CA). Material and Methods. A total of 207 consecutive patients (mean age 60.6 years) undergoing DSCT-CA were included. Contrast material (370 mg I/mL) dose calculation was randomly categorized into two groups (Group1: 1.10 mL/kg for men and women; Group 2: men 1.10 mL/kg, women 0.99 mL/kg) and flow rate was calculated as dose was divided by scan time plus 8 s. Mean arterial attenuations between men and women were compared with respect to attenuations of ascending aorta (AA) above coronary ostia, left main coronary artery (LM), proximal segments of right coronary artery (RCA), left anterior descending (LAD), and left circumflex artery (LCX) in two groups, respectively. Attenuations of coronary arteries were correlated with BW and BMI with simple linear regression. Results. The mean attenuations of AA, LM, RCA, LAD, and LCX were 407.8 {+-} 53.6 HU, 412.6 {+-} 55.4 HU, 411.4 {+-} 64.3 HU, 399.1 {+-} 56.7 HU, and 399.1 {+-} 60.2 HU, respectively, and there were no significant differences between men and women in group 1 (AA, P = 0.571; LM, P = 0.670; RCA, P = 0.737; LAD, P = 0.439, and LCX, P = 0.888). In group 2, the mean attenuations of AA, LM, RCA, LAD, and LCX in men were significantly higher than those in women (AA, P = 0.008; LM, P = 0.025; RCA, P = 0.017; LAD, P = 0.015, and LCX, P = 0.002). Positive linear regression between BW and attenuations of AA (R{sup 2} = 0.047, P = 0.02), LM (R{sup 2} = 0.036, P = 0.04), RCA (R{sup 2} = 0.080, P < 0.01), LAD (R{sup 2} = 0.078, P < 0.01), and LCX (R{sup 2} = 0 209. Leaf area index estimation in a pine plantation with LAI-2000 under direct sunlight conditions: relationship with inventory and hydrologic variables; Estimacion del indice de area foliar en pinares de repolacion con LAI-2000 bajo radiacion solar directa: relacion con variables de inventario e hidrologicas Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Molina, A.; Campo, A. D. del 2011-07-01 LAI is a key factor in light and rainfall interception processes in forest stands and, for this reason, is called to play an important role in global change adaptive silviculture. Therefore, it is necessary to develop practical and operative methodologies to measure this parameter as well as simple relationships with other silviculture variables. This work has studied 1) the feasibility of LAI-2000 sensor in estimating LAI-stand when readings are taken under direct sunlight conditions; and 2) the ability of LAI in studying rainfall partitioned into throughfall (T) in an Aleppo pine stand after different thinning intensities, as well as its relationships to basal area, (G), cover (FCC), and tree density (D). Results showed that the angular correction scheme applied to LAI-2000 direct-sunlight readings stabilized them for different solar angles, allowing a better operational use of LAI-2000 in Mediterranean areas, where uniform overcast conditions are difficult to meet and predict. Forest cover showed the highest predictive ability of LAI (R{sup 2} = 0.98; S = 0.28), then G (R{sup 2} = 0.96; S = 0.43) and D (R{sup 2} = 0.50; S = 0.28). In the hydrological plane, T increased with thinning intensity, being G the most explanatory variable (R{sup 2} = 0.81; S = 3.07) and LAI the one that showed the poorest relation with it (R{sup 2} = 0.69; S = 3.95). These results open a way for forest hydrologic modeling taking LAI as an input variable either estimated form LAI-2000 or deducted from inventory data. (Author) 36 refs. 210. Only carbofuran was found in carbosulfan- or furathiocarb-treated samples, suggesting they converted into carbofuran while passing through the skin layer. The quantity of insecticide penetrating skin increased with time and applied dose. The skin penetration rate increased with the water solubility of insecticides. The dermal penetration rates of carbofuran, furathiocarb, and carbosulfan were determined as 1.05 {mu}g/cm{sup 2} per h (r{sup 2}=0.991), 0.46 {mu}g/cm{sup 2} per h (r{sup 2}=0.984) and 0.14 {mu}g/cm{sup 2} per h (r{sup 2}=0.967), respectively. There was no significant difference in rate of skin penetration between furathiocarb EC (1.42 {mu}g/cm{sup 2} per h, r{sup 2}=0.988) and WP (1.35 {mu}g/cm{sup 2} per h, r{sup 2}=0.982), while furathiocarb technical grade showed a lower skin penetration rate. In vitro models may be used to predict percutaneous absorption and are useful in selecting safer formulations for field application of pesticide. (orig.) 211. Automated detection and volumetric segmentation of the spleen in CT scans; Automatische Detektion und volumetrische Segmentierung der Milz in CT-Untersuchungen Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Hammon, M.; Dankerl, P.; Janka, R.; Uder, M.; Cavallaro, A. [Universitaetsklinikum Erlangen (Germany). Radiologisches Inst.; Kramer, M.; Seifert, S.; Tsymbal, A.; Costa, M.J. [Siemens AG, Erlangen (Germany). Corporate Technology 2012-08-15 To introduce automated detection and volumetric segmentation of the spleen in spiral CT scans with the THESEUS-MEDICO software. The consistency between automated volumetry (aV), estimated volume determination (eV) and manual volume segmentation (mV) was evaluated. Retrospective evaluation of the CAD system based on methods like ''marginal space learning'' and ''boosting algorithms''. 3 consecutive spiral CT scans (thoraco-abdominal; portal-venous contrast agent phase; 1 or 5 mm slice thickness) of 15 consecutive lymphoma patients were included. The eV: 30 cm{sup 3} + 0.58 (width x length x thickness of the spleen) and the mV as the reference standard were determined by an experienced radiologist. The aV could be performed in all CT scans within 15.2 ({+-} 2.4) seconds. The average splenic volume measured by aV was 268.21 {+-} 114.67 cm{sup 3} compared to 281.58 {+-} 130.21 cm{sup 3} in mV and 268.93 {+-} 104.60 cm{sup 3} in eV. The correlation coefficient was 0.99 (coefficient of determination (R{sup 2}) = 0.98) for aV and mV, 0.91 (R{sup 2} = 0.83) for mV and eV and 0.91 (R{sup 2} = 0.82) for aV and eV. There was an almost perfect correlation of the changes in splenic volume measured with the new aV and mV (0.92; R{sup 2} = 0.84), mV and eV (0.95; R{sup 2} = 0.91) and aV and eV (0.83; R{sup 2} = 0.69) between two time points. The automated detection and volumetric segmentation software rapidly provides an accurate measurement of the splenic volume in CT scans. Knowledge about splenic volume and its change between two examinations provides valuable clinical information without effort for the radiologist. (orig.) 212. Long persistent and optically stimulated luminescence behaviors of calcium aluminates with different trap filling processes Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Zhang, Buhao; Xu, Xuhui; Li, Qianyue; Wu, Yumei; Qiu, Jianbei; Yu, Xue, E-mail: [email protected] 2014-09-15 Properties of long persistent luminescence (LPL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of CaAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}:Eu{sup 2+}, R{sup 3+} (R=Nd, Dy, Tm) materials were investigated. The observed phenomenon indicates that R{sup 3+} ions (R=Nd, Dy, Tm) have different effects on trap properties of CaAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}:Eu{sup 2+}. The greatly improved LPL performance was observed in Nd{sup 3+} co-doped samples, which indicates that the incorporation of Nd{sup 3+} creates suitable traps for LPL. While co-doping Tm{sup 3+} ions, the intensity of high temperature of thermoluminescence band in CaAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}:Eu{sup 2+} phosphors is enhanced for the formation of the most suitable traps which benefits the intense and stable OSL. These results suggest that the effective traps contributed to the LPL/OSL are complex, of which could be an aggregation formation with shallow and deep traps other than simple traps from co-doped R{sup 3+} ions. The mechanism presented in the end potentially provides explanations of why the OSL of CaAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}:Eu{sup 2+}, R{sup 3+} exhibits different read-in/read-out performance as well. - Graphical abstract: OSL emission spectra of Ca{sub 0.995}Al{sub 2}O{sub 4}:0.0025Eu{sup 2+}, 0.0025R{sup 3+} (R=Nd, Dy, Tm) taken under varying stimulation time (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 s). Inset: Blue emission pictures under varying stimulation time. - Highlights: • The LPL and OSL properties of CaAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}:Eu{sup 2+}, R{sup 3+} were investigated. • An alternative approach to control the trap depth of CaAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}:Eu{sup 2+} phosphor was proposed. • A new oxide ETM phosphor exhibiting intense and stable OSL was explored. 213. Quantization function for attractive, singular potential tails; Die Quantisierungsfunktion fuer attraktive, singulaere Potentialschwaenze Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Raab, Patrick N. 2010-02-04 The interaction between atoms and molecules with each other are deep potential wells with attractive, singular tails. Bound state energies are determined by a quantization function according to a simple quantization rule. This function is dominantly determined by the singular potential tail for near-threshold states. General expressions for the low- and highenergy contributions of the singular potential tail to the quantization function, as well as the connection to the scattering length are presented in two and three dimensions. Precise analytical expressions for the quantization function are determined for the case of potential tails proportional to -1/r{sup 4} and -1/r{sup 6} for three dimensions. (orig.) 214. A reduced-scaling density matrix-based method for the computation of the vibrational Hessian matrix at the self-consistent field level Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Kussmann, Jörg; Luenser, Arne; Beer, Matthias; Ochsenfeld, Christian, E-mail: [email protected] [Chair of Theoretical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Munich (LMU), Butenandtstr. 7, D-81377 München (Germany) 2015-03-07 An analytical method to calculate the molecular vibrational Hessian matrix at the self-consistent field level is presented. By analysis of the multipole expansions of the relevant derivatives of Coulomb-type two-electron integral contractions, we show that the effect of the perturbation on the electronic structure due to the displacement of nuclei decays at least as r{sup −2} instead of r{sup −1}. The perturbation is asymptotically local, and the computation of the Hessian matrix can, in principle, be performed with O(N) complexity. Our implementation exhibits linear scaling in all time-determining steps, with some rapid but quadratic-complexity steps remaining. Sample calculations illustrate linear or near-linear scaling in the construction of the complete nuclear Hessian matrix for sparse systems. For more demanding systems, scaling is still considerably sub-quadratic to quadratic, depending on the density of the underlying electronic structure. 215. An application of intertwining operators in functional analysis Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Shtepin, V V [Donetsk National University, Donetsk (Ukraine); Shtepina, T V [Donetsk Institute for Social Education, Donetsk (Ukraine) 2009-12-31 We consider classes of integral operators on the spaces of square-integrable functions on the sphere and of locally integrable functions on Lobachevsky space. The kernels of these operators depend only on the distance between points in the spherical and hyperbolic geometry, respectively. These operators are intertwining for the quasi-regular representation of the corresponding Lie group, and this enables us to evaluate their spectra and diagonalize the operators themselves. As applications, we take the Minkowski problem and the FunkHecke theorem for Euclidean space R{sup n}. A generalization is obtained of the Funk-Hecke theorem in the case of hyperbolic space R{sup n-1,1} with indefinite inner product. 216. Seiberg-Witten and 'Polyakov-like' Magnetic Bion Confinements are Continuously Connected Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Poppitz, Erich; /Toronto U.; Unsal, Mithat; /SLAC /Stanford U., Phys. Dept. 2012-06-01 We study four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric pure-gauge (Seiberg-Witten) theory and its N = 1 mass perturbation by using compactification on S{sup 1} x R{sup 3}. It is well known that on R{sup 4} (or at large S{sup 1} size L) the perturbed theory realizes confinement through monopole or dyon condensation. At small S{sup 1}, we demonstrate that confinement is induced by a generalization of Polyakov's three-dimensional instanton mechanism to a locally four-dimensional theory - the magnetic bion mechanism - which also applies to a large class of nonsupersymmetric theories. Using a large- vs. small-L Poisson duality, we show that the two mechanisms of confinement, previously thought to be distinct, are in fact continuously connected. 217. [Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Ciudad Universitaria, Instituto de Fisica y Matematicas, Morelia, Michoacan (Mexico) 2017-05-15 We reconsider the fundamental commutation relations for non-commutative R{sup 2} described in polar coordinates with non-commutativity parameter θ. Previous analysis found that the natural transition from Cartesian coordinates to the traditional polar system led to a representation of [r, φ] as an everywhere diverging series. In this article we compute the Borel resummation of this series, showing that it can subsequently be extended throughout parameter space and hence provide an interpretation of this commutator. Our analysis provides a complete solution for arbitrary r and θ that reproduces the earlier calculations at lowest order and benefits from being generally applicable to problems in a twodimensional non-commutative space. We compare our results to previous literature in the (pseudo-)commuting limit, finding a surprising spatial dependence for the coordinate commutator when θ >> r{sup 2}. Finally, we raise some questions for future study in light of this progress. (orig.) 219. Hyperspectral Analysis of Soil Nitrogen, Carbon, Carbonate, and Organic Matter Using Regression Trees Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden) L. Monika Moskal 2012-08-01 Full Text Available The characterization of soil attributes using hyperspectral sensors has revealed patterns in soil spectra that are known to respond to mineral composition, organic matter, soil moisture and particle size distribution. Soil samples from different soil horizons of replicated soil series from sites located within Washington and Oregon were analyzed with the FieldSpec Spectroradiometer to measure their spectral signatures across the electromagnetic range of 400 to 1,000 nm. Similarity rankings of individual soil samples reveal differences between replicate series as well as samples within the same replicate series. Using classification and regression tree statistical methods, regression trees were fitted to each spectral response using concentrations of nitrogen, carbon, carbonate and organic matter as the response variables. Statistics resulting from fitted trees were: nitrogen R>2 0.91 (p < 0.01 at 403, 470, 687, and 846 nm spectral band widths, carbonate R>2 0.95 (p < 0.01 at 531 and 898 nm band widths, total carbon R>2 0.93 (p < 0.01 at 400, 409, 441 and 907 nm band widths, and organic matter R>2 0.98 (p < 0.01 at 300, 400, 441, 832 and 907 nm band widths. Use of the 400 to 1,000 nm electromagnetic range utilizing regression trees provided a powerful, rapid and inexpensive method for assessing nitrogen, carbon, carbonate and organic matter for upper soil horizons in a nondestructive method. 240. Quantum field theory on locally noncommutative spacetimes Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Lechner, Gandalf [Univ. Leipzig (Germany). Inst. fuer Theoretische Physik; Waldmann, Stefan [Leuven Univ. (Belgium) 2012-07-01 A class of spacetimes which are noncommutative only in a prescribed region is presented. These spacetimes are obtained by a generalization of Rieffel's deformation procedure to deformations of locally convex algebras and modules by smooth polynomially bounded R{sup n}-actions with compact support. Extending previous results of Bahns and Waldmann, it is shown how to perform such deformations in a strict sense. Some results on quantum fields propagating on locally noncommutative spacetimes are also given. 242. Variation in spread of Heterobasidion annosum in clones of Picea abies grown at different vegetation phases under greenhouse conditions Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Svedjemark, G.; Stenlid, J. [Swedish Univ. of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala (Sweden). Dept. of Forest Mycology and Pathology 1996-06-01

Forty-nine Picea abies (L.) Karst clones were inoculated under greenhouse conditions with a Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. isolate of the S intersterility group. The cuttings were inoculated at the following vegetation stages; bud-flushing stage, vegetative stage and after bud-set. Fungal growth in sapwood and leison length in the inner bark were measured after 34 days. The susceptibility of the various clones to H. annosum was strongly correlated among the three vegetation stages, both in terms of mean growth and mean growth ranking. Partitioning of variance components showed that variation in growth was explained by physiological stages and clone to 4% and 24%, respectively, and for interaction between clone and physiological stage to 9%. Corresponding values for leison length in the inner bark were 3%, 14% and 5%, respectively. Fungal growth in wood and leison length in the inner bark were strongly correlated (r{sup 2} ranging between 0.23 and 0.36). When cuttings were inoculated during bud-flushing, leison length and fungal growth in wood were both strongly correlated with bud-flushing index of the cuttings (r{sup 2} = 0.03 and 0.04 respectively) but that was not the case for the other stages. The number of active fine-roots and the degree of wilting of the cuttings were negatively correlated with leison length and fungal growth (r{sup 2} ranging between 0.01 and 0.13). Height and diameter varied greatly between the clones and both were negatively correlated with fungal extension (r{sup 2} ranging between 0.01 and 0.09). 33 refs, 2 figs, 3 tabs 243. Left ventricular function in response to dipyridamole stress: head-to-head comparison between {sup 82}Rubidium PET and {sup 99m}Tc-sestamibi SPECT ECG-gated myocardial perfusion imaging Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Giorgi, Maria Clementina; Meneghetti, Jose Claudio; Soares, Jose; Izaki, Marisa; Falcao, Andrea; Imada, Rodrigo; Chalela, William; Oliveira, Marco Antonio de; Nomura, Cesar [Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Service - Heart Institute of the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, Sao Paulo (Brazil); Verberne, Hein J. [University of Amsterdam, Department of Nuclear Medicine, Academic Medical Center, P.O. Box 22700, Amsterdam (Netherlands) 2017-05-15 Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with {sup 99m}Tc-sestamibi (sestamibi) SPECT and rubidium-82 ({sup 82}Rb) PET both allow for combined assessment of perfusion and left ventricular (LV) function. We sought to compare parameters of LV function obtained with both methods using a single dipyridamole stress dose. A group of 221 consecutive patients (65.2 ± 10.4 years, 52.9% male) underwent consecutive sestamibi and {sup 82}Rb MPI after a single dipyridamole stress dose. Sestamibi and {sup 82}Rb summed rest (SRS), stress (SSS) and difference (SDS) scores, and LV end-diastolic (EDV) and end-systolic (ESV) volumes and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were compared. Bland-Altman analysis showed that with increasing ESV and EDV the difference between the two perfusion tracers increased both at rest and post-stress. The mean difference in EDV and ESV between the two perfusion tracers at rest could both be independently explained by the {sup 82}Rb SDS and the sestamibi SRS. The combined models explained approximately 30% of the variation in these volumes between the two perfusion tracers (R{sup 2} = 0.261, p = 0.005; R{sup 2} = 0.296, p < 0.001, for EDV and ESV respectively). However, the mean difference in LVEF between sestamibi and {sup 82}Rb showed no significant trend post-stress (R{sup 2} = 0.001, p = 0.70) and only a modest linear increase with increasing LVEF values at rest (R{sup 2} = 0.032, p = 0.009). Differences in left ventricular volumes between sestamibi and {sup 82}Rb MPI increase with increasing volumes. However, these differences did only marginally affect LVEF between sestamibi and {sup 82}Rb. In clinical practice these results should be taken into account when comparing functional derived parameters between sestamibi and {sup 82}Rb MPI. (orig.) 245. Modelling pH, alkalinity and runoff in a lakeless forested basin in southern Finland Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Lepistoe, A.; Jaervi, T.; Seuna, P. 1987-01-01 The Swedish PULSE model, with the HBV model as the hydrological part, has been used for simulation of the pH and alkalinity of runoff. In Sweden the model has been applied with good results to forested basins that have lakes. In the present study the model was applied to a forested basin without lakes, in order to test its suitability in this case. The model was calibrated to a small (0.69 km{sup 2}) basin using a 12-year time period (1972-83;R{sup 2}=0.80 for runoff). Verification was carried out with data of the intensively monitored years 1984-85 (R{sup 2}=0.84 for runoff, R{sup 2}=0.71 for pH). The results show that the PULSE model can also be applied satisfactorily to basins without lakes. The simulation provides reference values fo use in destinguishing long term changes in the runoff water quality from natural short-term variations. 5 figures, 10 references. (author). 247. Centro de Pesquisas (CENPES) 2008-07-01 An experimental study is carried out aiming to develop a method of quantitative analysis of properties of petroleum mixtures, such as water and asphaltene contents, heavy oil concentration and viscosity based on the use of a NIR spectrophotometer. A strategy of generation of crude oil mixtures with known properties was developed to help calibrating the NIR spectrophotometer. Petroleum mixtures involving 2 or 3 oils under known ratios were prepared based on a set of different light and heavy Brazilian crude oil samples. Moreover, experimental data of 5 binary mixtures were also assembled into a data set named multi-compound. Results indicated that excellent calibration models can be obtained for binary mixtures with correlation coefficient (R{sup 2}) greater than 99% for water and asphaltene contents, viscosity and heavy oil concentration. For ternary systems, excellent correlations (R{sup 2}>99%) can be attained for asphaltene and heavy oil contents. Finally for the multi-compound data set, the asphaltene content was the only property that resulted in R{sup 2}>99%, which demonstrates the adequacy of the NIR technique for assessing this property. Solar-energy potential in Turkey Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Soezen, Adnan; Arcaklioglu, Erol; Oezalp, Mehmet; Kanit, E. Galip 2005-04-01 In this study, a new formula based on meteorological and geographical data was developed to determine the solar-energy potential in Turkey using artificial neural-networks (ANNs). Scaled conjugate gradient (SCG) and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) learning algorithms and a logistic sigmoid transfer function were used in the network. Meteorological data for the last four years (2000 {yields} 2003) from 18 cities (Bilecik, Kirsehir, Akhisar, Bingoel, Batman, Bodrum, Uzunkoeprue, Sile, Bartin, Yalova, Horasan, Polatli, Malazgirt, Koeycegiz, Manavgat, Doertyol, Karatas and Birecik) spread over Turkey were used as data in order to train the neural network. Meteorological and geographical data (latitude, longitude, altitude, month, mean sunshine duration, and mean temperature) were used in the input layer of the network. Solar radiation is the output layer. One-month test data for each city was used, and these months data were not used for training. Obesity and fat quantification in lean tissues using three-point Dixon MR imaging Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Kovanlikaya, Arzu; Gilsanz, Vicente [Children' s Hospital of Los Angeles, Department of Radiology, Los Angeles, CA (United States); Mittelman, Steven D.; Ward, Andrette; Geffner, Mitchell E. [Children' s Hospital of Los Angeles, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Los Angeles, CA (United States); Dorey, Frederick [Children' s Hospital of Los Angeles, Department of Pediatrics, Los Angeles, CA (United States) 2005-06-01 It has been suggested that increased hepatic and intramuscular fat is associated with insulin resistance, and that increased pancreatic fat is related to impaired insulin secretion. We postulated that in obese nondiabetic teenagers insulin levels would be directly related to increases in intramuscular and hepatic fat and inversely related to increases in pancreatic fat. MRI was used to assess the percentage of fat in the liver, muscle and pancreas in 15 healthy Mexican-American girls, 14-17 years old, with body mass indexes (BMIs) ranging from 17.7 kg/m{sup 2} to 46 kg/m{sup 2}. An investigation of resonances in e{sup +}-H scattering embedded in Debye plasma Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Ning, Ye; Yan, Zong-Chao [Department of Physics, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick E3B 5A3 (Canada); Ho, Yew Kam [Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan (China) 2015-01-15 We carry out calculations for S-wave and P-wave resonances in e{sup +}-H scattering in weakly coupled Debye plasma in which the interaction between two charged particles is represented by a screened Coulomb potential. We employ the complex-scaling method with Hylleraas-type basis set to take correlation effects into account. In the complex-scaling treatment of the screened Coulomb potential, we first perform a Taylor series expansion for the exponential function that contains the distance r between two particles into a polynomial with various powers r{sup n}. We then make the complex scaling transformation of r→r e{sup iθ} in the expansion. The complex resonant eigenvalues are obtained by searching for stabilized points in the complex energy plane with respect to the changes of rotational angle θ and other parameters in the basis set. 413. Electronic Structure of Gadolinium Calcium Oxoborate Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Nelson, A; Adams, J; Schaffers, K 2004-07-01 Gadolinium calcium oxoborate (GdCOB) is a nonlinear optical material that belongs to the calcium--rare-earth (R) oxoborate family, with general composition Ca{sub 4}RO(BO{sub 3}){sub 3} (R{sup 3+} = La, Sm, Gd, Lu, Y). X-ray photoemission was applied to study the valence band electronic structure and surface chemistry of this material. High resolution photoemission measurements on the valence band electronic structure and Gd 3d and 4d, Ca 2p, B 1s and O 1s core lines were used to evaluate the surface and near surface chemistry. These results provide measurements of the valence band electronic structure and surface chemistry of this rare-earth oxoborate. 414. A new look at the quantum mechanics of the harmonic oscillator Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Kastrup, H.A. 2006-12-15 At first sight it is probably hard to believe that something new can be said about the harmonic oscillator (HO). But that is so indeed: Classically the Harmonic Oscillator (HO) is the generic example for the use of angle and action variables {phi} element of R mod 2{pi} and I>0. However, the transformation q= {radical}(2I)cos {phi}, p=-{radical}(2I)sin {phi} is only locally symplectic and singular for (q,p)=(0,0). Globally the phase space {l_brace}(q,p){r_brace} has the topological structure of the plane R{sup 2}, whereas the phase space {l_brace}({phi},I){r_brace} corresponds globally to the punctured plane R{sup 2}-(0,0) or to a simple cone S{sup 1} x R{sup +} with the tip deleted. This makes a qualitative difference as to the quantum theory of the two phase spaces: The quantizing canonical group for the plane R{sup 2} consists of the (centrally extended) translations generated by the Poisson Lie algebra basis {l_brace}q,p,1{r_brace}, whereas the corresponding canonical group of the phase space {l_brace}({phi},I){r_brace} is the group SO{up_arrow} (1,2)=Sp(2,R)/Z{sub 2}, where Sp(2,R) is the sympletic group of the plane, with the generating Poisson Lie algebra basis {l_brace}h{sub 0}=I,h{sub 1}=Icos{phi},h{sub 2}=Isin{phi}{r_brace} which provides also the basic ''observables'' on {l_brace}({phi}, I){r_brace}. In the quantum mechanics of the ({phi},I)-model of the HO the three h{sub j} correspond to self-adjoint generators K{sub j}, j=0,1,2, of irreducible unitary representations from the positive discrete series of the group SO{up_arrow}(1,2) or one of its infinitely many covering groups, the representations parametrized by the Bargmann index k>0. This index k determines the ground state energy E{sub k,n=0}={Dirac_h}{omega}k of the ({phi},I)-Hamiltonian H(anti K)={Dirac_h}{omega}K{sub 0}. For an m-fold covering the lowest possible value for k is k=1/m, which can be made arbitrarily small by choosing m accordingly. This is not in contraction to 415. Delta-N formalism for the evolution of the curvature perturbations in generalized multi-field inflation Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Matsuda, Tomohiro, E-mail: [email protected] [Laboratory of Physics, Saitama Institute of Technology, Fusaiji, Okabe-machi, Saitama 369-0293 (Japan) 2009-11-30 The deltaN formalism is considered to calculate the evolution of the curvature perturbation in generalized multi-field inflation models. The result is consistent with the usual calculation of the standard kinetic term. For the calculation of the generalized kinetic term, we improved the definition of the adiabatic field. Our calculation improves the usual calculation of R{sup .} based on the field equations and the perturbations, giving a very simple and intuitive argument for the evolution equations in terms of the perturbations of the inflaton velocity. Significance of non-equilibrium corrections are also discussed, which is caused by the small-scale (decaying) inhomogeneities. This formalism based on the modulated inflation scenario (i.e., calculation based on the perturbations related to the inflaton velocity) provides a powerful tool for investigating the signature of moduli that may appear in string theory. 416. Assessing chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) distribution, stocks, and fluxes in Apalachicola Bay using combined field, VIIRS ocean color, and model observations Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Joshi, Ishan D.; D' Sa, Eurico J.; Osburn, Christopher L.; Bianchi, Thomas S.; Ko, Dong S.; Oviedo-Vargas, Diana; Arellano, Ana R.; Ward, Nicholas D. 2017-03-01 Understanding the role of estuarine-carbon fluxes is essential to improve estimates of the global carbon budget. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in aquatic carbon cycling. The chromophoric fraction of DOM (CDOM) can be readily detected via in situ and remotely-sensed optical measurements. DOM properties, including CDOM absorption coefficient at 412 nm (ag 412) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were examined in Apalachicola Bay, a national estuarine research reserve located in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, using in situ and satellite observations during the spring and fall of 2015. Synoptic and accurate representation of estuarine-scale processes using satellite ocean color imagery necessitates the removal of atmospheric contribu- tion (~90%) to signals received by satellite sensors to successfully link to in situ observations. Three atmospheric correction schemes (e.g., Standard NIR correction, Iterative NIR correction, and SWIR correction) were tested first to find a suitable correction scheme for the VIIRS imagery in low to moderately turbid Apalachicola Bay. The iterative NIR correction performed well, and validation showed high correlation (R>2 = 0.95, N = 25) against in situ light measurements. A VIIRS-based CDOM algorithm was developed (R>2 = 0.87, N = 9) and validated (R>2 = 0.76, N = 20, RMSE = 0.29 m-1 ) against in situ observations. Subsequently, ag412 was used as a proxy ofDOCinMarch(DOC=1.08+0.94×ag 412,R2 =0.88,N=13)andinNovember(DOC= 1.61 + 1.33 × ag 412, R>2 = 0.83, N = 24) to derive DOC maps that provided synoptic views of DOC distribution, sources, and their transport to the coastal waters during the wet and dry seasons. The estimated DOC stocks were ~3.71 × 106 kg C in March and ~4.07 × 106 kg C in November over an area of ~560 km2. Volume flux (out of the bay) almost doubled for March 24 (735 m3 417. Explicit and implicit ode solvers using Krylov subspace optimization: Application to the diffusion equation and parabolic Maxwell`s system Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Druskin, V.; Knizhnerman, L. 1994-12-31 The authors solve the Cauchy problem for an ODE system Au + {partial_derivative}u/{partial_derivative}t = 0, u{vert_bar}{sub t=0} = {var_phi}, where A is a square real nonnegative definite symmetric matrix of the order N, {var_phi} is a vector from R{sup N}. The stiffness matrix A is obtained due to semi-discretization of a parabolic equation or system with time-independent coefficients. The authors are particularly interested in large stiff 3-D problems for the scalar diffusion and vectorial Maxwell`s equations. First they consider an explicit method in which the solution on a whole time interval is projected on a Krylov subspace originated by A. Then they suggest another Krylov subspace with better approximating properties using powers of an implicit transition operator. These Krylov subspace methods generate optimal in a spectral sense polynomial approximations for the solution of the ODE, similar to CG for SLE. 418. Global solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in higher dimensions Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Choquet-Bruhat, Yvonne [Academie des Sciences, Paris (France); Chrusciel, Piotr T [Albert Einstein Institute, Golm (Germany); Loizelet, Julien [Albert Einstein Institute, Golm (Germany) 2006-12-21 We consider the Einstein-Maxwell equations in space-dimension n. We point out that the Lindblad-Rodnianski stability proof applies to those equations whatever the spacedimension n {>=} 3. In even spacetime dimension n + 1 {>=} 6, we use the standard conformal method on a Minkowski background to give a simple proof that the maximal globally hyperbolic development of initial data sets which are sufficiently close to the data for Minkowski spacetime and which are Schwarzschildian outside of a compact set lead to geodesically complete spacetimes, with a complete Scri, with a smooth conformal structure, and with the gravitational field approaching the Minkowski metric along null directions at least as fast as r{sup -(n-1)/2}. 419. We determine in particular the structure of the zero modes due to the fluxes, which leads to low-energy mirror models. (Abstract Copyright [2010], Wiley Periodicals, Inc.) 420. A novel string field theory solving string theory by liberating left and right movers Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Nielsen, Holger B. [Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen,17 Belgdamsvej, DK 2100 (Denmark); Ninomiya, Masao [Okayama Institute for Quantum Physics,Kyoyama 19-1 Kita-ku, Okayama-city 700-0015 (Japan) 2014-05-08 We put forward ideas to a novel string field theory based on making some “objects†that essentially describe “liberated†left- and right- mover fields X{sub L}{sup μ} (Ï„+σ) and X{sub R}{sup μ}(τ−σ) on the string. Our novel string field theory is completely definitely different from any other string theory in as far as a “null set†of information in the string field theory Fock space has been removed relatively, to the usual string field theories. So our theory is definitely new. The main progress is that we manage to make our novel string field theory provide the correct mass square spectrum for the string. We finally suggest how to obtain the Veneziano amplitude in our model. « 19 20 21 22 23 » « 20 21 22 23 24 » 421. Curve fitting methods for solar radiation data modeling Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Karim, Samsul Ariffin Abdul, E-mail: [email protected], E-mail: [email protected]; Singh, Balbir Singh Mahinder, E-mail: [email protected], E-mail: [email protected] [Department of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Information Technology, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Bandar Seri Iskandar, 31750 Tronoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan (Malaysia) 2014-10-24 This paper studies the use of several type of curve fitting method to smooth the global solar radiation data. After the data have been fitted by using curve fitting method, the mathematical model of global solar radiation will be developed. The error measurement was calculated by using goodness-fit statistics such as root mean square error (RMSE) and the value of R{sup 2}. The best fitting methods will be used as a starting point for the construction of mathematical modeling of solar radiation received in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) Malaysia. Numerical results indicated that Gaussian fitting and sine fitting (both with two terms) gives better results as compare with the other fitting methods. 422. Extension of the JCZ product species database Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Hobbs, M.L.; Baer, M.R.; McGee, B.C. 1998-09-01 A database has been created for use with the Jacobs-Cowperthwaite-Zwisler-3 equation-of-state (JCZ3-EOS) to determine thermochemical equilibrium states for energetic materials. The JCZ3-EOS uses the exponential 6 intermolecular potential function to describe interactions between molecules. Product species are characterized by r{sup *}, the radius of the minimum pair potential energy, and {var_epsilon}/{kappa}, the well depth energy normalized by Boltzmann`s constant. These parameters constitute the JCZS (S for Sandia) database describing 750 gases listed in the JANNAF tables and were obtained by using literature values of the Lennard-Jones potential, a corresponding states theory, pure liquid shock Hugoniot data, and fit values to an empirical EOS. Detonation velocities predicted with the JCZS database for a wide variety of explosives are in good agreement with data. Improved predictions of low density explosives is attributed to a better description of molecular interactions at intermediate pressures. 423. An analysis of relationships among climate forcing and time-integrated NDVI of grasslands over the U.S. northern and central Great Plains Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Yang, L. [Univ. of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE (United States); Wylie, B.K.; Reed, B.C. [Hughes STX Corp., Sioux Falls, SD (United States). EROS Data Center; Tieszen, L.L. [Augustana Coll., Sioux Falls, SD (United States). Dept. of Biology 1998-07-01 Time-integrated normalized difference vegetation index (TI NDVI) derived from the multitemporal satellite imagery (1989--1993) was used as a surrogate for primary production to investigate climate impacts on grassland performance for central and northern Great Plains grasslands. Results suggest that spatial and temporal variability in growing season precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and growing degree days are the most important controls on grassland performance and productivity. When TI NDVI and climate data of all grassland land cover classes were examined as a whole, a statistical model showed significant positive correlation between the TI NDVI and accumulated spring and summer precipitation, and a negative correlation between TI NDVI and spring potential evapotranspiration. The coefficient of determination (R{sup 2}) of the general model was 0.45. When the TI NDVI-climate relationship was examined by individual land cover type, the relationship was generally better defined in terms of the variance accounted for by class-specific models. 424. M.; Erwin, R.; Moritomo, Y. 2000-11-13 We present elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements characterizing peculiar short-range charge-orbital and spin order in the layered perovskite material La{sub 1.5}Sr {sub 0.5}CoO {sub 4} . We find that below T{sub c}{approx}750 K holes introduced by Sr doping lose mobility and enter a statically ordered charge glass phase with loosely correlated checkerboard arrangement of empty and occupied d{sub 3z{sup 2}-r{sup 2}} orbitals (Co{sup 3+} and Co{sup 2+} ). The dynamics of the resultant mixed spin system is governed by the anisotropic nature of the crystal-field Hamiltonian and the peculiar exchange pattern produced by the orbital order. Parvan 4, 300223-Timisoara (Romania); Academy of Romanian Scientists, Independentei 54, 050094-Bucharest (Romania) 2014-10-01 The exchange charge model of crystal field was applied to determine the dependence of the crystal field strength 10Dq on interionic distances R between the Fe{sup 2+} impurity ion and O{sup 2−} ligands in cubic MgO:Fe{sup 2+}. The obtained results were extrapolated by the power law and was shown that 10Dq depends on R as 1/R{sup n}, with n=6.3486. The deviations of these values from the value n=5 (predicted by the simple point charge model of crystal field) is explained by the covalent and exchange effects between impurity ion and ligands; the contribution of these effects into the total crystal field strength was considered separately. The 10Dq functions obtained as a result of our calculations were used for estimations of the electron–vibrational constants, Huang–Rhys parameters, and Jahn–Teller stabilization energy, and compared with available literature data. 452. Advances in the theory of box integrals Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Bailey, David H.; Borwein, J.M.; Crandall, R.E. 2009-06-25 Box integrals - expectations or over the unit n-cube (or n-box) - have over three decades been occasionally given closed forms for isolated n,s. By employing experimental mathematics together with a new, global analytic strategy, we prove that for n {le} 4 dimensions the box integrals are for any integer s hypergeometrically closed in a sense we clarify herein. For n = 5 dimensions, we show that a single unresolved integral we call K{sub 5} stands in the way of such hyperclosure proofs. We supply a compendium of exemplary closed forms that naturally arise algorithmically from this theory. 455. Scale-invariance as the origin of dark radiation? Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

Gorbunov, Dmitry, E-mail: [email protected] [Institute for Nuclear Research of Russian Academy of Sciences, 117312 Moscow (Russian Federation); Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, 141700 Dolgoprudny (Russian Federation); Tokareva, Anna [Institute for Nuclear Research of Russian Academy of Sciences, 117312 Moscow (Russian Federation); Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University, 119991 Moscow (Russian Federation) 2014-12-12 Recent cosmological data favor R{sup 2}-inflation and some amount of non-standard dark radiation in the Universe. We show that a framework of high energy scale invariance can explain these data. The spontaneous breaking of this symmetry provides gravity with the Planck mass and particle physics with the electroweak scale. We found that the corresponding massless Nambu–Goldstone bosons – dilatons – are produced at reheating by the inflaton decay right at the amount needed to explain primordial abundances of light chemical elements and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background. Then we extended the discussion on the interplay with Higgs-inflation and on general class of inflationary models where dilatons are allowed and may form the dark radiation. As a result we put a lower limit on the reheating temperature in a general scale invariant model of inflation. 458. Nodal domains on isospectral quantum graphs: the resolution of isospectrality? These graphs are the analogues of the isospectral domains in R{sup 2} which were introduced recently in Gordon et al (1992 Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 27 134-8), Chapman (1995 Am. Math. After presenting some of the properties of these graphs, we discuss a few examples which support the conjecture that by counting the nodal domains of the corresponding eigenfunctions one can resolve the isospectral ambiguity. 459. Assessing the Relationship Between Spectral Vegetation Indices and Shrub Cover in the Jornada Basin, New Mexico Science.gov (United States) Duncan, Jeff; Stow, D.; Franklin, J.; Hope, A. 1993-01-01 We assessed the statistical relations between Spectral Vegetation Indices (SVI's) derived from SPOT multi-spectral data and semi-arid shrub cover at the Jornada LTER site in New Mexico. Despite a limited range of shrub cover in the sample the analyses resulted in r(sup 2) values as high as 0 central dot 77. Greenness SVI's (e.g., Simple Ratio, NDVI, SAVI, PVI and an orthogonal Greenness index) were shown to be more sensitive to shrub type and phenology than brightness SVis (e.g., green, red and near-infrared reflectances and a Brightness index). The results varied substantially with small-scale changes in plot size (60m by 60m to 100m by 100m) as a consequence of landscape heterogeneity. ROB has been found to adsorb {approx}85% of malathion from its aqueous solution as against 47-68% by other fungal biomasses. Hydrogen ion concentration does not influence the adsorption of malathion by ROB which follows Langmuir-Freundlich dual equilibrium isotherm model (r{sup 2} = 0.998). Both physical and chemical interactions are responsible for binding of malathion on ROB. Scanning electron micrographs and EDXA spectra exhibit adsorption of the pesticide on cell surface of ROB. Studies with cell surface polysaccharides show that chitosan through its amine groups contributes largely in the adsorption of malathion. Extraction of lipids from ROB decreases its adsorption capacity to the extent of 36.37-94.02%, depending on the polarity of the solvent. 464. The irradiation was performed using a {sup 60}Co source (Gammacell 220, MDS Nordion) within total doses from 100 Gy up to 3 kGy at a dose rate of 3 kGy/h. In this interval, the dosimetric response of the diode is linear with a correlation coefficient (r{sup 2}) higher than 0.993. However, without any irradiation procedure, the device showed a small sensitivity dependence on the accumulated dose. For total dose of 3 kGy, the observed decrease was about 2%. [Centre for Cancer Imaging, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne, Melbourne VIC 3002 (Australia) 2014-01-15 Purpose: CT ventilation imaging is a novel functional lung imaging modality based on deformable image registration. The authors present the first validation study of CT ventilation using positron emission tomography with{sup 68}Ga-labeled nanoparticles (PET-Galligas). The authors quantify this agreement for different CT ventilation metrics and PET reconstruction parameters. Methods: PET-Galligas ventilation scans were acquired for 12 lung cancer patients using a four-dimensional (4D) PET/CT scanner. CT ventilation images were then produced by applying B-spline deformable image registration between the respiratory correlated phases of the 4D-CT. The authors test four ventilation metrics, two existing and two modified. The two existing metrics model mechanical ventilation (alveolar air-flow) based on Hounsfield unit (HU) change (V{sub HU}) or Jacobian determinant of deformation (V{sub Jac}). The two modified metrics incorporate a voxel-wise tissue-density scaling (ÏV{sub HU} and ÏV{sub Jac}) and were hypothesized to better model the physiological ventilation. In order to assess the impact of PET image quality, comparisons were performed using both standard and respiratory-gated PET images with the former exhibiting better signal. Different median filtering kernels (σ{sub m} = 0 or 3 mm) were also applied to all images. As in previous studies, similarity metrics included the Spearman correlation coefficient r within the segmented lung volumes, and Dice coefficient d{sub 20} for the (0 − 20)th functional percentile volumes. Results: The best agreement between CT and PET ventilation was obtained comparing standard PET images to the density-scaled HU metric (ÏV{sub HU}) with σ{sub m} = 3 mm. This leads to correlation values in the ranges 0.22 ⩽ r ⩽ 0.76 and 0.38 ⩽ d{sub 20} ⩽ 0.68, with r{sup ¯}=0.42±0.16 and d{sup ¯}{sub 20}=0.52±0.09 averaged over the 12 patients. The method is based on the catalytic reaction between cyanate and bicarbonate to produce ammonia and carbon dioxide in the presence of an inducible native cyanase, immobilised in a reactor packed with glass beads. Two degrees of purification of the biocatalyst were used - heated cell-free extract and purified extract of cyanase from Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT 5344. The ammonia produced by the enzymatic reaction is finally monitored photometrically at 700 nm using a modification of the conventional Berthelot method. The method furnishes different calibration curves depending on the degree of purification of the cyanase, with linear ranges between 1.23 and 616.50 {mu}mol L{sup -1} (r{sup 2}=0.9979, n=7) and between 1.07 and 308.25 {mu}mol L{sup -1} (r{sup 2}= 0.9992, n=7) for the heated cell-free extract and the purified cyanase extract, respectively. No statistically significant differences between the samples were found in the precision study evaluated at two cyanate concentration levels using one-way analysis of variance. A sampling frequency of 15 h{sup -1} was achieved. The method was used to monitor cyanate consumption in a cyanate bioremediation tank inoculated with Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT 5344 strain. The correlation between cyanate degradation and ammonia production was tested using a conventional method. Finally, the method was applied to different samples collected from the bioremediation tank using the standard addition method; recoveries between 85.9 and 97.4% were obtained. (orig.) 486. Lurie Children' s Hospital of Chicago, Department of Medical Imaging, Chicago, IL (United States) 2016-10-15 Asymmetrical caval to pulmonary blood flow is suspected to cause complications in patients with Fontan circulation. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of 4-D flow MRI for characterizing the relationship between 3-D blood flow distribution and vascular geometry. We hypothesized that both flow distribution and geometry can be calculated with low interobserver variability and will detect a direct relationship between flow distribution and Fontan geometry. Four-dimensional flow MRI was acquired in 10 Fontan patients (age: 16 ± 4 years [mean ± standard deviation], range: 9-21 years). The Fontan connection was isolated by 3-D segmentation to evaluate flow distribution from the inferior vena cava (IVC) and superior vena cava (SVC) to the left and right pulmonary arteries (LPA, RPA) and to characterize geometry (cross-sectional area, caval offset, vessel angle). Flow distribution results indicated SVC flow tended toward the RPA while IVC flow was more evenly distributed (SVC to RPA: 78% ± 28 [9-100], IVC to LPA: 54% ± 28 [4-98]). There was a significant relationship between pulmonary artery cross-sectional area and flow distribution (IVC to RPA: R{sup 2}=0.50, P=0.02; SVC to LPA: R{sup 2}=0.81, P=0.0004). Good agreement was found between observers and for flow distribution when compared to net flow values. Four-dimensional flow MRI was able to detect relationships between flow distribution and vessel geometry. Future studies are warranted to investigate the potential of patient specific hemodynamic analysis to improve diagnostic capability. (orig.) 487. Methods and Materials: A prospective study was designed to measure {Delta}PFTs of patients undergoing RT. Sixty-six patients were included. Spirometry, lung capacity (measured by helium dilution), and diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide tests were used to measure lung function. Two lung definitions were considered: paired lung vs. irradiated lung (IL). Correlation analysis of dosimetric parameters (mean lung dose and the percentage of lung volume receiving more than a threshold dose) and {Delta}PFTs was carried out to find the best dosimetric predictor. Chemotherapy, age, smoking, and the selected dose-volume parameter were considered as single and interaction terms in a multivariate analysis. Stability of results was checked by bootstrapping. Results: Both lung definitions proved to be similar. Modeling was carried out for IL. Acute and late damage showed the highest correlations with volumes irradiated above {approx}20 Gy (maximum R{sup 2} = 0.28) and {approx}40 Gy (maximum R{sup 2} = 0.21), respectively. RT alone induced a minor and transitory restrictive defect (p = 0.013). Doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide-paclitaxel (Taxol), when administered pre-RT, induced a late, large restrictive effect, independent of RT (p = 0.031). Bootstrap values confirmed the results. Conclusions: None of the dose-volume parameters was a perfect predictor of outcome. Thus, different predictor models for {Delta}PFTs were derived for the IL, which incorporated other nondosimetric parameters mainly through interaction terms. Late {Delta}PFTs seem to behave more serially than early ones. Large restrictive defects were demonstrated in patients pretreated with doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide-paclitaxel. 488. Nonlinear susceptibility magnitude imaging of magnetic nanoparticles Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Ficko, Bradley W., E-mail: [email protected]; Giacometti, Paolo; Diamond, Solomon G. 2015-03-15 This study demonstrates a method for improving the resolution of susceptibility magnitude imaging (SMI) using spatial information that arises from the nonlinear magnetization characteristics of magnetic nanoparticles (mNPs). In this proof-of-concept study of nonlinear SMI, a pair of drive coils and several permanent magnets generate applied magnetic fields and a coil is used as a magnetic field sensor. Sinusoidal alternating current (AC) in the drive coils results in linear mNP magnetization responses at primary frequencies, and nonlinear responses at harmonic frequencies and intermodulation frequencies. The spatial information content of the nonlinear responses is evaluated by reconstructing tomographic images with sequentially increasing voxel counts using the combined linear and nonlinear data. Using the linear data alone it is not possible to accurately reconstruct more than 2 voxels with a pair of drive coils and a single sensor. However, nonlinear SMI is found to accurately reconstruct 12 voxels (R{sup 2}=0.99, CNR=84.9) using the same physical configuration. Several time-multiplexing methods are then explored to determine if additional spatial information can be obtained by varying the amplitude, phase and frequency of the applied magnetic fields from the two drive coils. Asynchronous phase modulation, amplitude modulation, intermodulation phase modulation, and frequency modulation all resulted in accurate reconstruction of 6 voxels (R{sup 2}>0.9) indicating that time multiplexing is a valid approach to further increase the resolution of nonlinear SMI. The spatial information content of nonlinear mNP responses and the potential for resolution enhancement with time multiplexing demonstrate the concept and advantages of nonlinear SMI. Highlights: • Development of a nonlinear susceptibility magnitude imaging model • Demonstration of nonlinear SMI with primary and harmonic frequencies • Demonstration of nonlinear SMI with primary and intermodulation 489. Realistic phantoms to characterize dosimetry in pediatric CT Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Carver, Diana E.; Kost, Susan D.; Fraser, Nicholas D.; Pickens, David R.; Price, Ronald R.; Stabin, Michael G. [Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Nashville, TN (United States); Segars, W.P. [Duke University, Carl E. Ravin Advanced Imaging Laboratories, Durham, NC (United States) 2017-05-15 The estimation of organ doses and effective doses for children receiving CT examinations is of high interest. Newer, more realistic anthropomorphic body models can provide information on individual organ doses and improved estimates of effective dose. Previously developed body models representing 50th-percentile individuals at reference ages (newborn, 1, 5, 10 and 15 years) were modified to represent 10th, 25th, 75th and 90th height percentiles for both genders and an expanded range of ages (3, 8 and 13 years). We calculated doses for 80 pediatric reference phantoms from simulated chest-abdomen-pelvis exams on a model of a Philips Brilliance 64 CT scanner. Individual organ and effective doses were normalized to dose-length product (DLP) and fit as a function of body diameter. We calculated organ and effective doses for 80 reference phantoms and plotted them against body diameter. The data were well fit with an exponential function. We found DLP-normalized organ dose to correlate strongly with body diameter (R{sup 2}>0.95 for most organs). Similarly, we found a very strong correlation with body diameter for DLP-normalized effective dose (R{sup 2}>0.99). Our results were compared to other studies and we found average agreement of approximately 10%. We provide organ and effective doses for a total of 80 reference phantoms representing normal-stature children ranging in age and body size. This information will be valuable in replacing the types of vendor-reported doses available. These data will also permit the recording and tracking of individual patient doses. Moreover, this comprehensive dose database will facilitate patient matching and the ability to predict patient-individualized dose prior to examination. (orig.) 490. CPD was employed to improve the surface characteristics of the spacer fabrics for nphs loading. Surface morphology and color variation were studied utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and CIE-Lab system, respectively. The effect of CPD on the wetting ability of the spacer fabrics was examined using dynamic adsorption measurement (DAM). Also, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was utilized to investigate the durability of the nphs on the spacer fabrics. All the experiments were implemented in a Boxâ €“Behnken design (BBD) with three independent variables (CPD treatment time, dye concentration and irradiation time) in order to optimize the decolorization of RO16. The anticipated values of the decolorization efficiency were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental values (R{sup 2} = 0.9996, Adjusted R{sup 2} = 0.9992). The kinetic analysis demonstrated that the photocatalytic decolorization followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model. In conclusion, this heterogeneous photocatalytic process is capable of decolorizing and mineralizing azoic reactive dye in textile wastewater. Moreover, the results confirmed that RSM based on the BBD was a suitable method to optimize the operating conditions of RO16 degradation. 491. Seeing the invisible: Direct visualization of therapeutic radiation beams using air scintillation Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Fahimian, Benjamin; Türkcan, Silvan; Kapp, Daniel S.; Pratx, Guillem, E-mail: [email protected] [Department of Radiation Oncology, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California 94305 (United States); Ceballos, Andrew [Department of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94305 (United States) 2014-01-15 Purpose: To assess whether air scintillation produced during standard radiation treatments can be visualized and used to monitor a beam in a nonperturbing manner. Methods: Air scintillation is caused by the excitation of nitrogen gas by ionizing radiation. This weak emission occurs predominantly in the 300–430 nm range. An electron-multiplication charge-coupled device camera, outfitted with an f/0.95 lens, was used to capture air scintillation produced by kilovoltage photon beams and megavoltage electron beams used in radiation therapy. The treatment rooms were prepared to block background light and a short-pass filter was utilized to block light above 440 nm. Results: Air scintillation from an orthovoltage unit (50 kVp, 30 mA) was visualized with a relatively short exposure time (10 s) and showed an inverse falloff (r{sup 2} = 0.89). Electron beams were also imaged. For a fixed exposure time (100 s), air scintillation was proportional to dose rate (r{sup 2} = 0.9998). As energy increased, the divergence of the electron beam decreased and the penumbra improved. By irradiating a transparent phantom, the authors also showed that Cherenkov luminescence did not interfere with the detection of air scintillation. In a final illustration of the capabilities of this new technique, the authors visualized air scintillation produced during a total skin irradiation treatment. Conclusions: Air scintillation can be measured to monitor a radiation beam in an inexpensive and nonperturbing manner. This physical phenomenon could be useful for dosimetry of therapeutic radiation beams or for online detection of gross errors during fractionated treatments. 492. TH-C-17A-09: Direct Visualization and Monitoring of Medical Radiation Beams in Air

Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Fahimian, B; Ceballos, A; Turkcan, S; Kapp, D; Pratx, G [Stanford University, Stanford, CA (United States) 2014-06-15 Purpose: Radiation therapy errors are rare but potentially catastrophic. Recent fatal incidents could have been avoided by utilizing real-time methods of monitoring delivery of radiation during treatment. However, few existing methods are practical enough to be used routinely. The study presents the first experimental demonstration of a novel nonperturbing method of monitoring radiation therapy through the phenomena of air scintillation. Methods: Monitoring of radiation delivery was devised by leveraging the phenomena of nitrogen excitation in air by ionizing radiation. The excitation induced weak luminescence in the 300–400 nm range, a process called air scintillation. An electron-multiplication charge-coupled device camera (f/0.95 lens; 440 nm shortpass) was set-up in a clinical treatment vault and was used to capture air scintillation images of kilovoltage and megavoltage beams. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to determine the correlation of radiation dose to air scintillation. Results: Megavoltage beams from a Varian Clinac 21EX and kilovoltage beams from an orthovoltage unit (50 kVp, 30 mA) were visualized with a relatively short exposure time (10 s). Cherenkov luminescence produced in a plastic transparent phantom did not interfere with detection of air scintillation. The image intensity displayed an inverse intensity falloff (r{sup 2} = 0.89) along the central axis and was proportional to dose rate (r{sup 2} = 0.9998). As beam energy increased, the divergence of the imaged beam decreased. Last, air scintillation was visualized during a simulated total skin irradiation electron treatment. Conclusion: Air scintillation can be clinically detected to monitor a radiation beam in an inexpensive and non-perturbing manner. This new method is advantageous in monitoring for gross delivery and uniquely capable of wide area in a single acquisition, such as the case for online verification of total body / skin / lymphoid irradiation treatments. 493. From strong to weak coupling in holographic models of thermalization Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Grozdanov, SaÅ¡o; Kaplis, Nikolaos [Instituut-Lorentz for Theoretical Physics, Leiden University,Niels Bohrweg 2, Leiden 2333 CA (Netherlands); Starinets, Andrei O. [Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, University of Oxford,1 Keble Road, Oxford OX1 3NP (United Kingdom) 2016-07-29 We investigate the analytic structure of thermal energy-momentum tensor correlators at large but finite coupling in quantum field theories with gravity duals. We compute corrections to the quasinormal spectra of black branes due to the presence of higher derivative R{sup 2} and R{sup 4} terms in the action, focusing on the dual to N=4 SYM theory and GaussBonnet gravity. We observe the appearance of new poles in the complex frequency plane at finite coupling. The new poles interfere with hydrodynamic poles of the correlators leading to the breakdown of hydrodynamic description at a coupling-dependent critical value of the wave-vector. The dependence of the critical wave vector on the coupling implies that the range of validity of the hydrodynamic description increases monotonically with the coupling. The behavior of the quasinormal spectrum at large but finite coupling may be contrasted with the known properties of the hierarchy of relaxation times determined by the spectrum of a linearized kinetic operator at weak coupling. We find that the ratio of a transport coefficient such as viscosity to the relaxation time determined by the fundamental non-hydrodynamic quasinormal frequency changes rapidly in the vicinity of infinite coupling but flattens out for weaker coupling, suggesting an extrapolation from strong coupling to the kinetic theory result. We note that the behavior of the quasinormal spectrum is qualitatively different depending on whether the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is greater or less than the universal, infinite coupling value of â„/4Ï€k{sub B}. In the former case, the density of poles increases, indicating a formation of branch cuts in the weak coupling limit, and the spectral function shows the appearance of narrow peaks. We also discuss the relation of the viscosity-entropy ratio to conjectured bounds on relaxation time in quantum systems. 494. Lactate and T{sub 2} measurements of synovial aspirates at 1.5 T: differentiation of septic from non-septic arthritis Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB) Wiener, Edzard; Zanetti, Marco; Hodler, Juerg; Pfirrmann, Christian W.A. [Orthopedic University Hospital Balgrist, Department of Radiology, Zurich (Switzerland) 2008-08-15 The aim of this study was to differentiate septic from non-septic arthritis by measuring lactate concentration with {sup 1}H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HMRS) and by estimating total protein content with the assessment of T{sub 2} values. In 30 patients with acute arthritis, synovial fluid was aspirated. Lactate concentrations were analyzed with single voxel HMRS at 1.5 T. T{sub 2} relaxation times were mapped with a multi-spin echo sequence. All samples underwent microbiological testing and routine laboratory analysis to quantify lactate concentration and total protein content. Values obtained in septic and non-septic arthritis were compared with a Mann-Whitney U test. Synovial fluid from patients with septic arthritis (n=10) had higher concentrations of lactate (11.4 {+-} 4.0 mmol/L) and higher total protein content (51.8 {+-} 10.7 g/L) than fluid obtained in non-septic arthritis (n=20; 5.2{+-}1.1 mmol/L and 40.4{+-}6.9 g/L, respectively, p < 0.001 and 6 mmol/L) in combination with low T{sub 2} values (
