Our brain grows in neurons! THE AMAZING HUMAN BRAIN In celebration of Brain Awareness Week this month, let’s learn about the benefits of exercise for the brain. Better yet, let’s commit to exercise daily for the brain. Did you know these fun facts about the human brain? • The weight of the human brain is about 3 lbs. • The brain is made up of about 75% water. • The brain consists of about 100 billion neurons. • There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels the brain. • The brain uses 20% of the total oxygen in the body. EXERCISE BOOSTS BRAIN POWER There are numerous benefits to exercise. While most of us know the benefits of exercise for the body, are we aware of the benefits of exercise for the brain? It turns out that exercise can do just as much good for your brain as it does for your body. Exercise helps the brain because it… • Increases production of BDNF in brain, which improves neuron functions and encourages neuron growth. • Increases blood flow and oxygen to brain. We also can exercise for the brain because exercise: 1) Improves long-‐term memory 2) Improves reasoning 3) Helps you problem solve 4) Treats depression and dementia and 5) Reduces risk for Alzheimer’s. John Medina explains it best: Rule #1: Exercise Boosts Brain Power! For more information, visit: Brain Rules. “Our brain developed while working out, walking as many as 12 miles a day.” – John Medina

Health News from your Physical Education Teacher MARCH MOVE AND GROW SPORTS NEWS: THE SPIRIT OF CAMARADERIE Lauren Hill was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the start of college. Her dream was to play in a college basketball game. In order to make it possible, another team, Hiram College Lady Terriers agreed to switch their basketball game location and time. The game was switched to the home court of Mount St. Joseph University in Ohio and moved up two weeks earlier. In response, The Mount St. Joseph players treated the other team Hiram College Lady Terriers to dinner the night before the game. During the game, all of the players showed kindness to each other. For example, when a player made a 3-‐point shot, a player from the other team congratulated her with “That was a nice shot.” Furthermore, when Lauren made the last shot of the game, the reaction of coaches, players and fans was tears of happiness. These players show that the game is not about winning or losing. The game is about the spirit of camaraderie and support for your team and the other team. Steve Hartman from CBS News says it best, “If college sports were a little less cutthroat, kids might learn that real winners are not decided by scoreboards, and true character isn’t defined by how often you make the highlight reel, but by how you behave when you think nobody is looking.” For more information in an article, visit: Article from Upworthy. We can take some inspiration from famous athletes and coaches who exhibited standards for Sportsmanship. “What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player.” – Coach John Wooden FITNESS: MAKE A POWER LIST What are the most important reasons to exercise for your brain and body? Make a power list of 5 reasons to exercise for your brain and body. Post it as a reminder for yourself and others. Post it on your door, refrigerator, folder or desk. Let this serve as a reminder to do more brain breaks!
NUTRITION: EXTRA, EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! Recently, the nutrition advisory panel that helps create the country’s dietary guidelines reviewed research studies and agreed that, “Americans were eating too much salt, sugar and saturated fat, and not enough foods that fit a ‘healthy dietary pattern,’ like fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish…” The panel specified that we are eating too much sugar, clearly stating, “There is a striking excess of added sugar intake in all age groups across the population.” The article also explains that Americans are allowed 12 teaspoons of sugar per day, but are in fact are eating 22 to 30 teaspoons of sugar a day. Yikes! That is a lot! The panel suggests several ideas such as removing sugary drinks from schools. As we begin National Nutrition Month, we all need to stop and take a look at the foods we are eating and how many sugars we are adding to our bodies and brains each day. Let’s support each other by eating meals together that bring us good health and good energy. For more information on the article, visit: NY Times Wellness Article.
