The cash-strapped Ven-ezuelan government has been finding ithard to buy even essential items likemedicines that have hit the healthcareservices hard in the country, thus rais-ing fears that its current political andeconomic crisis may soon turn into a po-tential humanitarian crisis if immedi-ate steps are not taken. Meanwhile, thelong lines at the supermarkets and themassive protests against the socialistgovernment of President NicolásMaduro represent the most dramaticillustration of Venezuelas current po-litical and economic turmoil. Energy ex-perts predict a decline of oil productionfor Venezuela to 2.25 million barrels aday by the end of this year. Some pollsestimate that more than 80% of basicconsumer products are now in shortsupply in Venezuela.Much of the countrys recenttroubles stem from the prolonged globalcollapse in oil prices over the last two-and-a-half years. Oil prices after hover-ing above $100 a barrel in January2014 came crashing down to below $30a barrel by January 2016. Althoughthey have recovered some of lost groundto reach around $50 a barrel by June2016, its still well below the comfortlevels of many oil producing nations in-cluding Venezuela. The latest figuresfrom Venezuelas state oil companyPDVSA show the average productioncost for all its crudes is $18 a barrel,while Toronto-listed Pacific Explora-tion & Production, Colombias largestprivate operator, reported thatitsproduction cost including diluents,transportation and taxes averaged $20to $22 in the third quarter of 2015,Reuters said in January. VenezuelasDiluted Crude Oil (DCO) was selling ataround $15 a barrel in the early thisyear. A more acute crude price slumpthis month has put several South American countries in the difficult posi-tion of selling oil for less than what itcosts to produce, according to tradersand sources at three companies in Co-lombia and Venezuela, RELATED SEARCH commentedReuters, adding, So far, the most af-fected crudes are blends formulatedwith naphtha and other importeddiluents.
