HYMNS OF THE DAY Pre-Presentation – Second Antiphon

May Christ our true God, Who condescended, for our salvation, to be held in the arms of the righteous Simeon.

Hymn of the Feast - First Tone

Hail Virgin Theotokos full of Grace, for Christ our God, the Sun of Righteousness, has dawned from you, granting light to those in darkness. And you, O Righteous Elder, rejoice, taking in your arms, the Deliverance of our souls, who grants us Resurrection.

Apolytikion - First Tone

Savior, Your tomb was sealed by the Jews with a stone. Soldiers kept watch over Your sacred body. Yet, You rose on the third day, giving life to the world. Wherefore the powers of heaven cried out to You, O Giver of Life, “Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ; glory to Your Kingdom, glory to Your dispensation who alone are the Loving One.”

Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom)

Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You.

Kontakion – First Tone

Your birth sanctified a Virgin’s womb and fittingly blessed the hands of Symeon. You have now come and saved us O Christ, our God. In troubled times, as the only loving One, give peace to Your commonwealth and strength to those in civil authority, whom You love.

EPISTLE READING

Let Us Be Attentive.. Verse: Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. God is known in Judah; His name is great in Israel. Wisdom..

The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 3:10-15

Let us be Attentive..

TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL READING

The Reading is from Luke 18:10-14 The Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS GO RED SUNDAY: Today has been designated as GO RED SUNDAY by the American Heart Association to remind us that Heart Disease is the Number One Killer of American women. 64% of women die from undetected coronary disease and the others had one or more symptoms that were overlooked. Heart disease is a silent killer. More women die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer combined. The Metropolis is reminding women to take charge of your life, go see your doctor, get a checkup, and live a healthier life. DEBUTANTE BALL: Chairman Katrina Beers is already making plans for the next Debutante Ball, to be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013. She is planning an information meeting in May. For further details you may call Katrina at (714) 936-7900. MOTHER OF THE YEAR: Nominations for Mother of the Year must be in the Philoptohos mailbox no later than tomorrow, February 6. (See next page.) FEED THE NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT: Our new project will begin on Sunday, February 12 right after communion. Anyone who would like to make a sack lunch to donate, or wishes to come out with us to Pico and Normandie, may do so. A sandwich of any type of lunch meat, such as bologna, ham, turkey, cheese, peanut butter - would be great. If you want to add a small bottle of water or milk to go with the sandwich, perhaps a cookie or fruit - anything you want to donate will be very much appreciated. Father Bakas says that our Cathedral is a ‘lighthouse on rocky shores' and our Cathedral stands like a beacon in the neighborhood. We will not be walking alone; everyone will be walking in groups. If we find even one person that needs a lunch that day, then we have done God's work. This is the purpose of Philoptohos. BLANKETS FOR CHILDREN: If you can knit or sew a blankie for children who are in the hospital, then this is a project for you. Miller's Children's Hospital of Long Beach, will gladly accept your donation of a small blanket that children hold onto for 'comfort' while they are in the hospital. The neonatal ward for the tiniest of infants, could accept very small items about 6” x 6”. This can be put inside a bassinet with a sick baby. The toddler ward can accept items that are around 12” to 24”. Items should be cotton only. You can use a nice, tight 'knit' stitch or sew a cotton or cotton fleece little blanket. You may bring your donation in a bag to the church narthex marked for Philoptohos on Sundays and we will pick it up. "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do". Ephesians 2:10. With love, Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

For those who are sick or suffering…  St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14) Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests during St Sophia Cathedral’s office hours.
