Property Social Issues Africa & Middle East Asia Pacific Europe Latin America & Caribbean North America

English Workshop on Opportunities and challenges of the banking sector for the financing of distributed photovoltaic generation projects in Chile 16 November 2017 | Santiago, Chile The Workshop on “Opportunities and challenges of the banking sector for the financing of distributed photovoltaic generation projects in Chile” was held for the first time in Santiago de Chile on November 16th. The workshop was organized by UNEP FI, Fundación Chile and Fraunhofer Chile. This was an initiative of the open innovation platform, BRILLA, a project financed by the Strategic Investment Fund and supported by the Solar Energy Programme. The objective of the workshop was to support the maturation of the national financial market around the financing of clean technologies, supporting the development of enabling structures for energy selfconsumption (in this case, mainly FV). This workshop seeked to raise awareness in a concise manner to the relevant banking actors, as well as raise internal barriers and challenges of these institutions in order to prospect for impact activities for future work with the financial sector. Target audience The target audience was divided into 4 segments: 1. Managers / Deputy Managers of Commercial Banking Chile: This segment was the most important for the workshop considering that they will be the decision makers, in the first instance, regarding the involvement in this business segment. 2. Managers of risk area commercial banking Chile: The importance of this segment lies in that all credit must be approved by a bank’s risk area, which acts as a strainer in defining what type of risks the bank is willing to take and what not. This is why knowing and evaluating the risks perceived by this area surrounding the financing of smaller-scale PV projects is central to the development of adhoc financial products. 3. Experts on Non-Conventional Renewable Energies financing, Project Finance in commercial banking Chile: This segment has vast experience in the financing of large-scale energy projects and are familiar with both the banking and technical aspects of this type of project. They have a high knowledge of the electricity market and can contribute and support their Banking peers in considerations to have both from the technical and banking point of view. 4. Development Bank and other entities of the sector: It is important to count on the participation of representatives of the Development Bank in order to understand the challenges and needs of national commercial banks on a smaller scale in the energy market. On the other hand, public institutions active in these issues should be considered in order to keep them informed about the trends that are occurring in the market and the shortcomings of this.
