Hunger in the World: Causes, Consequences and Remedies STUDY ABROAD COURSE FOR January 2016 AFRN 2191, AgEc4301, AgEc 7301, AgEc 4301Honors Instructor: William H. Meyers, Co-Instructors: Mary Hendrickson, Corinne Valdivia, Jere Gilles, and Matteo Vittuari (University of Bologna) Objectives: To gain knowledge on the causes, measurement, and consequences of food insecurity in the world and remedies proposed and actions taken to end hunger and malnutrition. Participants should learn the issues, the research, the key international agencies involved, their differing roles as well as US official roles in these efforts. And finally they need to develop and express their own views on hunger problems and policies. Design: The program is designed to speak with those directly involved in assessment of causes and development of advice to countries and international agencies on how to combat poverty and hunger in the world. Readings before, during and after the study. There are frequent roundtables to enhance comprehension and exchange ideas and differing perspectives on the information provided by expert’s presentations. There will be a required paper for upon return and concluding sessions with roleplaying and presentation of papers. Course Requirements Pre-departure lectures: Two pre-departure lectures during Fall 2014 semester will provide background information so that all participants have a basic knowledge of the basic literature on causes, measurement, consequences and suggested actions to end hunger in the world. Some topics we may touch on depending on your interest. 

Course timing 1. Two meetings in December for pre-departure orientation as well as introduction and background for the course that will enhance understanding during the study trip. 2. Ten days study program in Italy as described below. 3. Approximately 5 weekly meetings in January to March to complete the course requirements. 4. Final assignment due before Spring break Daily journal, Presentation and Paper: A significant portion of the grade for this course comes from the daily journal (or blog) and the writing and presentation of a paper. The paper topic should be selected during your study trip so that you have a chance to get suggestions and feedback from trip that will help with the final paper. There will be a few class sessions in Spring semester to discuss your journals, and the final papers will be submitted and presented before Spring break. The journal or blog should be kept current during the trip and submitted at the end but not later than one week after returning. Keeping a journal is a way to record for later recall each session and your main impressions of it. The guideline is that you write a short paragraph on each of the following questions and for each session: 1. Most important, surprising or interesting thing I learned 2. Questions that remain for me 3. General thoughts, opinions or disagreements I have For the paper, students should identify a hunger issue at country, region or global level and address causes, consequences and suggested remedies to the problem. The final paper should be a maximum of 3000 words (6000 for graduate and Honors credit), stapled, double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman. Use MLA style, Chicago style or equivalent for footnotes and references. The research paper will be done in three stages. First stage is to select a topic by Jan 27. Second stage is an abstract and annotated outline with preliminary literature sources identified. This will be presented briefly to the class and presented in class on February 19. Third stage is the full draft of the paper to be presented in the last two classes, March 12 or March 19 and submitted no later than March 20. Honors Criteria: Students eligible for honors credit can register for 4301H and will write a journal and a 6000 word research paper as described above for graduate students. In addition, Honors students will conduct an interview with a person or organization that we visit and write a separate journal or blog about the interview. Examples would be Andre Segre, organizer of Last Minute Market in Bologna or Cardinal Turksen or Ambassador Lane.
