ABSTRACT Rare earth elements (REEs) have a lot of uses in industry of high technology; their sources are abundantly available in Indonesia, including those are found in Bangka and Belitung islands, mainly as monazite and xenotime in the tailing of tin minings. This preliminary study has its ultimate objective to develop separation and analytical methods for light REEs by liquid chromatography through their complex formation with dibutyldithiophosphoric acid (DBDTPA) and with dibutyldithiocarbamic acid (DBDTCA), as new complexing agents for the elements. For this purpose, retention and separation of the complexes on liquid chromatographic systems with both polar and non-polar columns, have been studied. The study consisted of preparation of the two acidic ligands, formation and extraction of the REE-ligand complexes, observation of retention behaviour of the ligands and of the complexes, separation experiments, and application of methods developed for the separation of REEs contained in mineral samples. Results of the experiments showed that cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium, and neodymium could be separated, one from the others, as their dibutyldithiocarbamate complexes, using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a C18 column, with mobile phases of methanol-acetonitrile mixtures at a flow rate of 0.75 mL/min, and using an ultraviolet detection of eluates at 210 nm. Meanwhile, on the use of dibutyldithiophosphoric acid as a ligand, the same chromatographic column with binary mobile phases of methanol-acetonitrile or of methanol-water combination, from the four elements studied only cerium underwent retentions on the column. In spite of the fact, the use of dibutyldithiophosphoric acid has made liquid chromatographic separation and analysis of cerium in monazite samples simpler and easier, because of the high resolution between cerium and the other elements.Studies on the separation, analysis, and purification of REEs using liquid chromatography with ion-exchange and reversed-phase columns via formation of ion pairs and of complexes are now in progress. RETENSI DAN PEMISAHAN BEBERAPA UNSUR TANAH JARANG SEBAGAI KOMPLEKS DITIOFOSFAT DAN DITIOKARBAMAT PADA KOLOM KROMATOGRAFI CAIR ABSTRAK Unsur tanah jarang (UTJ) banyak kegunaannya dalam industri berteknologi tinggi, dan sumbernya cukup banyak tersedia di Indonesia termasuk yang ada di Pulau Bangka dan Pulau Belitung, terdapat terutama sebagai mineral monasit dan senotim dalam tailing penambangan timah. Penelitian pendahuluan ini bertujuan akhir untuk mengembangkan metode pemisahan dan analisis UTJ ringan dengan kromatografi cair melalui pembentukan kompleks dengan dibutilditiofosfat (DBDTF) dan dibutilditiokarbamat (DBDTK), sebagai senyawa pembentuk kompleks baru bagi unsur-unsur tersebut. Untuk itu telah dipelajari retensi senyawa-senyawa kompleks tersebut pada sistem-sistem kromatografi dengan kolom polar dan non-polar. Penelitian meliputi pembuatan kedua ligan, pembentukan dan ekstraksi senyawa-senyawa kompleks UTJ-ligan, pengamatan sifat retensi, percobaan pemisahan, dan aplikasi metode yang dikembangkan untuk pemisahan UTJ dalam sampel mineral. Hasil-hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa unsur-unsur serium, lantanum, praseodimium, dan neodimium dapat dipisahkan satu dari yang lainnya sebagai senyawa kompleks dibutilditiokarbamat dengan kromatografi cair kinerja tinggi (KCKT) menggunakan kolom C18, fasa gerak campuran metanol-asetonitril pada laju alir 0,75 mL/menit, dan deteksi eluat menggunakan detektor ultraviolet pada 210 nm. Sementara itu pada penggunaan ligan dibutilditiofosfat, kolom kromatografi yang sama dengan fasa gerak campuran biner kombinasi metanol-asetonitril atau metanol-air, dari empat unsur yang diteliti hanya serium yang mengalami retensi. Walaupun demikian penggunaan dibutilditiofosfat lebih memudahkan dan menyederhanakan pemisahan dan analisis serium, yang merupakan komponen utama dalam sampel monasit, secara kromatografi cair, karena tingginya resolusi antara serium dengan unsur-unsur yang diteliti lainnya. Penelitian-penelitian tentang pemisahan, analisis, dan pemurnian UTJ dengan menggunakan metode kromatografi cair dengan kolom penukar ion dan kolom fase terbalik melalui pembentukan pasangan ion atau kompleks, sedang berlangsung saat ini.
