f Youngsters learn about the habits of Box Turtles from Shuli Rank, a summer naturalist at Union County's Trailside Nature and Science Center in the Watchung Reservation. While the turtles, most of which were rescued, normally live in the science center, Rank explained to the youngsters that by bringing the turtles back to the woods, they would exhibit some of their behavior in the wild.

By Cheryl Hehl Staff Writer UNION — When Union High School students head back to class next month, they better be ready to smile because they will be on camera wherever they go inside the school. Thanks to the COPS Secure Our Schools federal grant program, the Union Police Department was able to qualify for a $138,000 grant to install state-of-the-art cameras throughout the high school. But this is no ordinary camera system, according to Union Deputy Police Chief Rick Landolfi. "If there is an incident at the high school, this is a web-based camera system that is hooked up to our police car laptops," the deputy chief said. But while the new camera system installed this summer provides an added measure of safety, Landolfi points out that other than minor scuffles, the high school usually does not have major incidents that require police aid. "We always have a resource officer inside the school to handle any problems that do come up, but this new camera system is just another way to ensure that if something does happen, we will know about it in seconds," the deputy chief, who has been on the force 32 years, said. It was no easy feat to acquire the grant, Landolfi said, but getting all those cameras in the high school was a monumental task. "There are tons of cameras everywhere," he said, mentioning that positioning the cameras throughout the school so every nook and cranny was covered took time. "AWf-jins* want.thp kirls to he- safp anrl knr>w when something is_goin_e wrong, if it does," Landolfi said. The COPS Secure Our Schools program encourages law enforcement agencies and school districts to partner together to improve school security and safety. Township police had to conduct a school safety assessment and request funding for specific safety improvement on school grounds. In turn, the federally-funded $16 million grant program provided police departments across the country who qualified for the grant w ith up to 50 percent of the total cost to put in place security or safety measures in schools. "We just want to keep our kids safe and be there quickly if something should happen at the high school," Landolfi said.

NJ Diamond Gloves match set for Oct. 8 Linden will host 77th annual state finals for the 11th consecutive year

Cub Scouts from Pack 116, Roselle Park, recently attended a Somerset Patriots baseball game where they were able to take to the field with the team during the playing of the National Anthem. Scouts received autographs from various players including team manager Sparky Lyle.

Linden Boxing Association President Alfred A. Volpe has announced that the only fight night in Linden this year will take place Oct. 8 when the Linden Boxing Association, in conjunction with the Linden Public Property and Community Services Department presents the 77th annual New Jersey State Finals of the Diamond Gloves Boxing Tournament. The full night of championship boxing entertainment is being sponsored by the ConocoPhillips Bay way Refinery and will be at the Linden High School Gymnasium, located at 121 W. St. Georges Ave. The first fight is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. According to Linden Boxing Association Founder Tony Orlando, 'This is the 11th consecutive year that we are hosting the Diamond Glove Tournament state finals here in Linden and also the 1 lth consecutive year that our friends from the ConocoPhillips Bayway Refinery are sponsoring the event. Without their sponsorship, we wouldn't be able to have this successful night of amateur boxing that annually supports, through its proceeds, a varied amount of programs for our city's youth." This year, the Linden Boxing Association will be honoring Michael Karlovich, the manager of Strategic Communication at Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery in Linden for his exceptional commitment to the sport of boxing and the youth of Linden throughout the past eleven years. During this time, the Linden Boxing Association has donated in excess of S329.000 to Linden Recreation supported youth programs and has sponsored three scholarships annually to graduating Linden High School students. Expecting to be in attendance at this year's championship bouts are, Bobby Czyz, former world light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion; Emile Griffith, former world welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight champion; Chuck Wepner, former heavyweight contender and Lou Duva, the Hall of Fame boxing trainer and manager, who has handled some of the greatest fighters in the world including 19 World Champions. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at the Community Center Building, 605 S. Wood Ave., Linden until Oct. 7. For information on the Diamond Glove finals, call the Linden Department of Public Property and Community Services at 908-474-8600.
