# 3 – Preceptors

Preceptors ‡

Many have advanced degrees & specialty certifications

“I think UVA's program is special because the preceptors are very well known and accomplished but also incredibly down to earth and approachable. They spend a lot of time with us passing along their knowledge. UVA also has a huge team of dietitians that all get to specialize in their respective fields.” –Tracy Ramsing, Current Intern

“This internship has been better than I imagined. I'm learning a lot every single day, but most importantly we have amazing preceptors. I think the unique thing about UVA is that there are several dietitians on staff, therefore we get to learn from a different specialist weekly! The unique rotations allows for the ability to be alongside passionate, dedicated dietitians who are experts in their work. The preceptors all make me feel welcome and I feel I am a part of the team not just an "intern".” –Jenna Zemering, Current Intern “I would say too that after being here, every preceptor, including Angie and Dana, are just so supportive. It's apparent that you all want us to succeed and learn everything we can while we're here.” – Katrina Beining, Current Intern “Class day every week provides a time to check in with the director and assistant director as well as other interns. This creates a very close knit group where we all support and encourage each other even though we're all in different rotations.” –Tracy Ramsing, Current Intern

DIETETICINTERNSHIPPROGRAM

‡ Oakwood University (OU) is one of the more than one hundred plus Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) institutions in the United States. ‡ Originally founded in 1896 as a Seventh-day Adventist Church Christian educational institution to provide tertiary education and training on a former slave and cotton plantation comprising more than 1100 acres of agriculture land located North West of downtown Huntsville, Alabama, at that time several miles outside of the Huntsville city limits.

DIETETICINTERNSHIPPROGRAM

‡ Oakwood University is a one hundred and nineteen year old tertiary education institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (CCSACS). ‡ Administrative offices are at 7000 Adventist Boulevard Huntsville, Alabama 35896.

‡Mission: For Over 20 Years the OU DIP mission has been to integrate faith and learning, preparing individuals to serve God and man by training dietetic practitioners to serve in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in fields of dietetics and nutrition. ‡ The OU Dietetic Internship Program (DIP) is a Distance Certificate Program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the (AND)Association for 2014 to 2021, as a non-degree full-time Dietetic Internship program with a concentration in Medical Nutrition Therapy.

OUDIETETICINTERNSHIPPROGRAM ‡ Each year the program accepts applicants for the distance dietetic internship program. ‡ Successful applicants then begin the full-time minimum of 1200 hours of professional supervised dietetic practice program over a ten-month completion period (2015-2016) from July through May of the following year. ‡ Official dietetic internship begins in late July with a one week on-site orientation on the OU campus in Huntsville, Alabama.

OUDIETETICINTERNSHIPPROGRAM ‡ OU distance Dietetic Internship Program (DIP) provides dietetic interns with the opportunity to perform their rotations in facilities located near their hometowns after they have completed the mandatory first week of orientation to be attended on-site at the OU campus in Huntsville, Alabama. ‡ OU DIP can also provide dietetic interns with opportunities for experiences at various hospitals, food service institutions, and long-term care, public health and wellness facilities across the North Alabama area and Tennessee Valley.
