By JEFFHANEY THE FOCUS

To paraphrase Temple University's familiar slogan, Ron Komegay could have gone anywhere. He chose Franklin. Armed with a splendid resume and 15 years of college coaching experience, Komegay had entertained offers from various high schools to take over as athletic director. That's no surprise, considering Komegay compiled a 90-49 record (.647) in five years at the helm of the Kean College men's basketball team and still found time to serve as assistant athletic director. But Komegay tufftSct down all comers until this summer, when Franklin High School came calling. This month, Kornegay takes over as the supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics at FHS, replacing longtime A.D. Pat Dolan. It wasn't an easy decision for Kornegay, who transformed Kean into a national power during his stint at the Union school. Kornegay was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1990-91, when the Cougars advanced to the Final Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament. "It took a lot of soul-searching," Kornegay said the other day. "It wasn't an easy decision, but I have been moving in this direction for a while now. This was an eventual goal for me, and I felt Franklin presented an opportunity that I couldn't pass up." While exploring the opening at Franklin, Komegay was most im(Please turn to page 20)

Scarlets zero in on this weekend's summer EastZones By JEFF HANEY THE FOCUS

New Jersey has officially entered "The Zone." like most swim meets, this weekend's Eastern Summer Zones at Rutgers University can be viewed as a stepping stone for the athletes — a stepping stone to a bigger, more prestigious meet.

But for New Jersey swimming, the Zones represent more than that. For New Jersey, hosting the Zones is proof positive that the state has emerged as the latest hot spot on the competitive swimming circuit. Just a year or so ago, the major Eastern swim meets consistently landed in places like Virginia or upstate New York. Anywhere, it

seemed, but New Jersey. "We just didn't have the facilities," said Sue Anderson, coach of the local Scarlet Aquatic Club. However, thanks to the construction of the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center at Rutgers and another top-notch pool at Princeton University, New Jersey swimming is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Baltimore has its Camden

Yards, New Jersey has its Sonny Werblin Center. As a direct result, the Winter Zones were held at Princeton, and this Thursday the Summer Zones get underway at the Werblin Center. Racing continues through Sunday. Of course, New Jersey's arrival in the "big time" has a down side (Please turn to page 19)

Somerset County schools are looking toward the year 2001, increasing technological studies through business and school partnerships, such as the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce Business Education Partnership, said Somerset DR. Through the partnerships, students are exposed to training and equipment, and have the opportunity -for employment through work study programs "We will see more working relationships between the educational community and business sector, as schools try to gear studies to meet the needs," Dr. Mundy said, " so students will be adequately prepared to move into'the work force." North. Plainfield Superintendent Dwight R. Pfennig agreed, saying schools are responsible for making students more techno-

Video rewind Cassavetes on video

Brook Cinema opens its big screen to new borders as part of a new policy

Fans of the late actor-director John Cassavetes will be pleased to hear that Touchstone Video will release five of his best works starting with the Oscarnominated A Woman Under the Influence on September 16. Cassavetes, well-known as a pioneer in independent filmmaking who reSed heavily on a small repertory of familiar actors, including Peter Falk. Ben Gasara and wife Gena Rowlands, began his directorial career in 1957 with film called Shadows, which was shot in 16mm for less than $20,000 and is also part of the Touchstone collection, as is The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976), the Oscar-nominated Faces (1966) and Opening Night (1977). Rowlands, who earned an Oscar nomination for Faces as weH as A Woman Under the Influence, where she stars as a wife and mother driven by loneliness to infidelity, and eventually,

alph Sirolli, manager of the Brook Cinema, is working on a parallel path with the Bound Brook downtown revitalization project. After weeks of focus group meetings, the revitalization project has concluded that Bound Brook should capitalize on its old-fashioned town center and quaint Victorian architecture to become something like a New Hope antique/art center. And Mr. Sirolli, who took over management of the theater just 11 weeks ago from owner Phil Neri, has concluded that the survival of the theater depends on carving out a niche among selective theater-goers looking for something unique and off the beaten track.' "Being an independent theater, you have to be a bit more innovative." said Mr. Sirolli. "It's hard to compete with the mall cinemas." At times, Mr. Sirolli said, it was even difficult for him to acquire the commercial films that the theater was accustomed to screening. If film companies have a limited number of prints to distribute, they are more likely to release it to one of the big commercial chains, he explained. So rather than try to continue to do what the commercial chains and malls were doing on a larger and more efficient scale, Mr. Sirolli two months ago began to gradually test the waters of a forein films audience with screenings of Mediterraneo, an Italian film which won this year's Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, The Playboys from Ireland, and Raise the Red Lantern from China. What he found, he said, was an audience that could be described as nothing less than grateful, enthusiastic, and constantly growing. "People actually come up and shake my hand and thank me," he said. "There has been an overwhelming support." :The foreign films are drawing audiences from far and wide, some as distant as the Poconos. Others in the audience, however, are coming from closer to home. "I get calls every day from people asking for directions," he said. "Some don't live that far away but they never realized how close or how easy it was to get to Bound Brook." Even though Mr. Sirolli brought Howards End, the English film based on the novel by E.M. Forster starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, to BoundBrook at the tail end of its regional screening, he found enough of a starved audience to keep the film for a three-week run — probably because the devoted foreign-film fans have historically been limited to Rocky Hill in Montgomery, or New York City. The older, discriminating film-goer that is attracted to the new line-up at the Brook Cinema is also more likely to appreciate the theater itself, Mr. Sirolli said. One of the few remaining one-screen movie houses, the 850-seat Brook Cinema boasts a full-sized screen, a domed ceiling, red velvet seats, gilded bas-relief pillars and molding, and marble walls.

ROB PAINE/WEEKENDPLUS

Ralph Sirolli, manager of the Brook Cinema in Bound Brook, prepares for the opening of the Brook's exclusive showing of the award-winning Spanish film Lovers.

Last week, the Brook began an exclusive New Jersey showing of Lovers, a steamy Spanish film, and Zentropa, a German film. Also, beginning last Sunday, he has rented the theater to the Bangladesh Society of New Jersey, which in cooperation with the Rutgers Student Center and the Rutgers Film Studies Department, is sponsoring a Bengalese film festival through the month of August. Screenings begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. The films, which drew about 100 people to the first screening, are in Bengalese, with no subtitles. In addition, in its 10th week at the Brook Cinema is the cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which runs at midnight on Friday and Saturday. The movie screening is accompanied by a simultaneous live performance by the Somerville Circle Players.

AUEN3 - j Cynical, downbeat and relentlessly grim — in short, the best of the three Alien movies. Eschewing the gung-ho infatuation with artillery of Aliens, this edition has more of the squirmy-repulsive feel of the initial encounter, though unlike Ridley Scott's movie it also has the courage of its frosty convictions. This time Ripley (Sigoumey Weaver), in a fetching Sinead O'Connor 'do, ends up on a prison planetoid and once again contends with that sixfingered, double-jawed, acidbleeding, indigestion-spawning child of H.R. Weekend! Film review

Love and indecision Erotic, puzzling 'Lovers' would be unbelievable if it weren't a true story By JEFFREY COHEN WeekendPlus Writer ver since Last Tango in Paris, filmmakers have been struggling with depicting the struggle between lust and love (actually, it goes way back before Tango, but that's where the explicit sex scenes really drove home the point for the first time). The latest rumination of the subject, the Spanish film Lovers, is now playing at the Brook Cinema in Bound Brook. Lovers, based on a true story, concerns itself with Paco (Jorge Sanz), a handsome if rather bland, ex-soldier who moves to Madrid in the mid-1950s to find himself a job, so he can support himself and his fiance Trini (Maribel Verdu) a woman so prudish that anything more than a kiss on the cheek sends her into a rage. Once in Madrid, Paco rents a room in the home of Luisa, (Victoria Abril, who won an award as Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for this role) a young, sexy widow who makes her living perpetuating street scams with two shifty men. One thing doesn't even have to lead to another before Luisa invites Paco to bed; it's no surprise that he takes her up on the invitation. Here's where we're supposed to be getting the steamy sex scenes that earned this film its erotic reputation, but if you've seen Basic Instinct, the only shocking thing about the nude scenes in Lovers will be the Big-city seductress Luisa (Victoria Abril) schemes to steal Paco (Jorge Sanz) from his Trini, his emphasis on male, rather than female, nudity, which is probably a breath of fresh air for female moviegoers. Outside of that, the eroticism chaste fiancee from home in the award-winning Spanish film Lovers. is largely run-of-the-mill and often off-screen altogether. been vacillating for an hour and 15 minutes by this point) and actually threatens to kill Paco is so thrilled with his initiation into sex that he proclaims his undying love for herself. Within a manute, Paco is calming her down by — you guessed it '-'ttecUDsing ^isj 'f Luisa, which lasts almost two whole minutes into his reunion with Trini. His secret life remains secret almost that long, and before you know it, both women not only know about undying love for Trini and vowing never to see Luisa again. In the next scene, they'rjg^rl- * * the other's existence, but are taking steps to eliminate the competition. Trini, alas, isn't as their way to get married. It gets so that after a while, you want to grab Paco by the hair, pull hi ndown off the devious as she thinks she is, nor as cold-blooded as Luisa, and that proves to be her screen, slap him in the face and yell, "Decide! One or the other! Now!" undoing. The final third of the movie deals with Luisa and Paco trying to bilk 1 Tmi out her life Clearly, director and co-writer Vincente Aranda means for Luisa to represent sex and savings to pay off Luisa's debt to her partners (you have to keep rerninc ing yourself this lust, and Trini the symbol of love and purity. It's to his credit — and to that of the actresses — that the two women manage to be more than one-note characters. Trini, after actually happened, or it would seem so implausible as to be laughable).' Hie movie is never clear on whether Paco is to steal it outright or kill her for it. American audiences may be an awftal start as a prude, a virgin and a bit of a pill, shows a playful side in later scenes, so annoyed with Paco at this point they no longer care, but at least Arar da keeps things and even rights Luisa on her own turf, taking Paco to bed so he can have her love and moving fast enough that we don't have much time to think about it. lust The twist is that Luisa, with all her sexual experience, is a better lover than Trini, so the tension between love and sex can continue. Lovers is a very European film; women are either seen as sex objects jr good little wives and servants to men. Paco's indecision between the two extremes is supposed to be seen The problem is Paco. Walking through the whole film moon-eyed and spineless, Sanz as his fatal flaw, and in Spain, it might have been. On American shores, it helps the plays Paco as so indecisive he makes Hamlet look like Indiana Jones. He declares his eternal love and devotion to whichever woman happens to be in the room at the time, and character wear out his welcome about halfway through the film. each time he decides for sure to stop seeing one or the other, his resolve vanishes the For foreign film veterans, it should be pointed out that the subtitles are mostly tinobtruminute he's in the presence of the woman he's going to cut loose. You begin to wonder sive and visible, although they sometimes appear incomplete. The music is repetitive and after a while why either woman wants anything to do with the guy. a little cheesy, while the cinematography is generally very good. It's the performances by the two female leads that will attract a viewer to Lovers, and the character of the male lead In one climactic scene near the end, Paco confronts Trini with the news that all he that may disappoint. wants in life is Luisa Trini flies into despair (as if she hadn't seen this coming; the guys
