Economics Optional for CSE-2013/14 pillarofautumn 5 years ago

edited July 2013

in Miscellaneous

Hello everyone, CSAT 2013 was my first attempt. Did not prepare much this time as I appeared just to get a hang of this examination. Went through selected portions TMH GS Manual, some issues of Chronicle and RS Aggarwal in a couple of months time. Expected score- P1: 86 and P2: 137, Total- 223. I went through many posts on expected cut off thread here on forumias and I think I might have a chance at clearing prelims. So I have started preparing for mains and I have chosen Economics as my optional. My background- Btech Biotechnology, MBA- Finance, currently working as Economics and Finance lecturer at a local B School (2 years), based in Delhi/NCR. Economics is an optional which is not as popular as Pub Ad/History/Geography etc. and hence it is difficult to find proper guidance in this subject. This thread is a feeble attempt to bring together those aspirants who have chosen Economics as their optional for CSE 2013/2014. We can discuss books, strategy, discuss current economic issues etc. and help each other in this journey to tame the IAS beast. Here is the list of Books I am following:

ya,count me in!you being a prof can help me out.anyways,I am a B.Sc grad and so have no prior knowledge associated with the subject but it's hugely interesting and that's why I've opted for it.looking forward for discussions!

pillarofautumn 5 years ago

Hi @punterdgr8 , I am primarily a lecturer of finance subjects but I have also taught microeconomics, macroeconomics, portions of Indian economy to UG and PG students. I have taken this subject owing to my interest and some prior knowledge I gained during teaching. It would be helpful if you dish out a little more details about what reading list you are following, what portions you have completed, if you have joined any coaching etc etc. Thanks and Regards Preachers of ethics and morality aren't having enough fun :-)

punterdgr8 5 years ago

hi @pillarofautumn,preps going very slow.by now completed demand theory and consumer choice.I know it's not in the syllabus but very much required.completed a bit of indian economy.following almost the same books and ya no coaching.how about you?

pillarofautumn 5 years ago

Same here, completed demand theory, consumer choice and production theory from pindyck and going through demand theory of koutsoyiannis and making notes. Also done classical Economics and Keynesian economics from Mankiw. Froyen not touched yet. Waiting for Pre results. If I pass, gears would shift automatically and I might join some mains crash course for Economics then. If I dont clear then looking forward to join october/november batch of Axiom IAS... Hi, I am not from delhi , so don't have access to economics coaching classes for CSE. I wish to appear in 2014. Can you guys please suggest me where can I get any good postal course in economics (study materials only). Thanks in advance

pillarofautumn 5 years ago

Hello Adi, Economics Postal course is provided by Rau's IAS, but as far as I have heard it is a compilation from standard books only. Price is Rs. 4000 + service tax. I do not know if any other coaching centre provides postal courses. But economics is a subject that must be learnt from standard textbooks only (previous toppers Neeraj Singh and Harshika Singh say so). Postal courses can be used just to systematize the preparation. In Delhi Axiom IAS is supposed to be a good coaching centre for Economics. Prof Mahesh Lalwani there is a PhD from Delhi School of Economics and has good reputation. I do not know if they provide any postal coaching. Thanks and Regards Preachers of ethics and morality aren't having enough fun :-)

@pillarofautum Being a newbie in economics as well as for cse, I am totally cofused where to start and how to start preparing eco for cse 14. Please share some strategies, do's, dont's etc. Thanks

pillarofautumn 5 years ago

Even I do not have economics background but I studied it during my MBA Finance. I developed interest in the subject and I have also taught Micro/Macro/Indian Economy to UG and PG students. In Microeconomics start with Microeconomics by Pindyck and Rubinfeld, solve end of chapter exercises to strengthen concepts and then move onto Modern Microeconomics by Koutsoyiannis. In Macroeconomics- Gregory Mankiw (You may also go for Principles of Macroeconomics by the same author. It is very very basic.) I started with these books during my time in MBA over 4 yrs ago. In Indian Economy go for Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh- from the very basic. Then read Indian Economy after independence by Uma Kapila. Indian Economy by Dutt and Sundaram or by Mishra and Puri are like an encyclopedia and they are eminently UNreadable (extremely boring- facts and figures based). Only use these very selectively. After you are done with Micro/macro then move on to international eco/ growth and development etc. Hope it Helps :-) Thanks and Regards Preachers of ethics and morality aren't having enough fun :-)

Hi, I am also preparing with economics background....thanks for starting this thread. I am also not from economics background but currently m enrolled at delhi school of eco which as it turns out is of no use as far as cse preparation is concerned....anyway i have studied macro and looking for good books on public finance and money and banking section.... @pillarofautumn : the book u have mentioned on public and finance...does it contain all the major instruments used by RBI??....i am asking this because most of the books i hv gone through in library fail to explain in detail about special instruments used only by RBI (and not other central banks of different countries) Further, the book on money banking...i am wary of taking an indian author's book on a theoretical subject...do u think this book is as good as...say...richard froyen?? Also, can we also use this platform for doubt clearance (of subject and syllabus)...for example: interest rate structures is mentioned in the syllabus....which section is this??...are they referring to term structures? and if yes then how many theories of it to go through (i could only find neo-keynisian and classical)?

If one has to choose coaching for Eco alone, which one should it be - Ecopoint or Axiom IAS ?

If one has to choose coaching for Eco alone, which one should it be - Ecopoint or Axiom IAS ? Bhai ji, axiom to maine kiya tha... Ekdum farzi hai... Buddha adhiktar topics ya to karwata nahi hai ya phir shallow tareeke se karwata hai. Uski coaching pe dependent rahenge to exam mein 50 se zyada number ka attempt bhi nahi kar paayenge UPSC 2013 All India Rank 1 | Indian Administrative Service | Earlier : Indian Police Service

I am not talking about money demand theory actually...m talking about interest rate 'structures' . Anyway there are total of four theories pertaining to term structures and i found a book so read from there

Anyone from Bangalore with economics as an optional? It'll be great if we can prepare together particularly for the theory portion of it.

Hii friends, m from chemical engg. Background, working now and have planned for 2015. I found my inclination towards economics. I want to opt it as ma optional but many of ma frnds and others told that its pretty difficult and vast in syllabus. Economics would be more suitable for one who have past background in economics or if u have enough time for preparation. Please someone throw light on this...

I want to opt it as ma optional but many of ma frnds and others told that its pretty difficult and vast in syllabus. Economics would be more suitable for one who have past background in economics or if u have enough time for preparation. Please someone throw light on this... for 2015, u have enough time to prepare, Take three months of time and try to cover Economics 1 portion little bit and see if you are able to atleast understand the questions of previous year papers. If you can't drop the idea and go for some other subject that you are familiar with.

Anyone know of any coaching centers for Economics Optional in Bangalore? I have heard that Impact is offering, what other options are there? I am starting to think Economics syllabus is too off mainstream textbooks to be able to be covered properly without some guidance... Pls give reviews of coaching centers you guys have attended.
