ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits Notes on the Scripture “I don’t get anything out of prayer”: This frequently heard lament in the world of pastoring includes many variations: “I don’t get anything out of going to Mass/going to Confession/attending parish missions/believing what my faith teaches/practicing the responsibilities of my religion.” Being Catholic altogether may seem extraneous to living a good and moral life. Everybody can produce a saintly atheist friend as exhibit A for the power of common decency. Needless to say, we do all this—partake of sacraments, remain faithful to prayer, attend to church teaching—not for any immediate cosmic “hit” of spiritual gratification. Once in a while we may get one. The lion’s share of the time however—the grace of the hour, as it were—goes into storage under our account. We’re investing in a relationship, and like any relationship, the proof is often in the history. Like the love between family members, that sense of nearness didn’t become normative. It receded once more to the background, but its impact remained. When we’re faithful to the relationship with the Holy, we put oil in our lamps for when we need it. Moral courage is stored there, as is access to wisdom, compassion, and the willingness for self-sacrifice. When darkness arrives and the oil is required, it will be there for us!

Stewardship The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

2

Throughout October we celebrated stewardship and presented our financial report to the parish. We also, asked parishioners to consider joining a ministry. If you are able, please, share your gifts and talents with us. Once again thank you for your support and love for this wonderful community.

Congratulations The Christifideles Award, which is given to a layperson that demonstrates faithfulness and dedication in ministry at the parish level was presented this year to John & Sheila Pacholski, in recognition for their involvement and dedication. Thank you for you ministry and congratulations!!!

Sabbatical Update I mentioned in previous weeks that I am planning my sabbatical from Jan through June 2018. The main reason for this sabbatical is to be able to grow and develop even more as a person, a priest and a pastor. To better prepare for the program I am participating in the review process and I want to invite all of you, parishioners of SFA, to take part of it. The survey can be easily accessed by going to the Archdiocese’s web page (https://www.archchicago.org/) and clicking on Offices and Ministries on the top panel. This will bring you to an alphabetical listing of offices. Under ‘M’, select Ministerial Evaluation. You will then be directed to the Ministerial Evaluation webpage. In the middle of the page, you will find “360 Catholic Leadership review for priests”. The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Polish. Click on the word ‘Link’ next to your appropriate language to access the survey. Please, help me to prepare better for my sabbatical and take this survey.

Adult Faith Formation THOUGHTS By, Pat Depcik At the recent Women’s Day celebration here at St. Francis, we were given the opportunity to not only see the women we already know but to meet others we didn’t know. Sr. Gael talked about St. Clare, a woman who gave up living in her familiar world and became a confidant and close friend to St. Francis of Assisi. She originated an order of nuns dedicated to prayer and poverty. We know them as the Poor Clares. During an interval, we were asked to walk the room and meet and introduce ourselves to those who were not familiar or perhaps whose face we knew but not the name. There was no apparent hesitation by anyone because the conversations grew as well as the smiles. As Sister proceeded with her talk, I felt the message of the importance of women in our faith and how strong and diverse their roles are in the Catholic community. The women I met were doing things at St. Francis in which I was unaware. The women who were not from this parish were equally involved in their respective parishes. There was a wealth of information floating around that room. 6

I read an article about Pope Francis on his thoughts when meeting people and he related that it was a need for him to be close to people. He recalled meeting an elderly woman while in St. Peter’s Square. He said she had beautiful eyes and he stopped to speak with her asking her age. She replied, 92. She looked strong and so he asked her secret to this long life. She answered, “I eat ravioli and I make it myself!” Pope Francis was touched by her words because she taught him a sense of hu-

mor. He said, “ Jesus embraces me through her. It’s not only I who am giving, I am receiving, not only the recipe of the ravioli, but to receive a life that is happy, joyful, a witness of life.” You might not get a recipe for ravioli, but if you reach out to someone other than the ones you already know, you may receive a story of kindness, fortitude and devotion and an incentive or inspiration to explore your recipe for faith in action.

AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton We have reviewed the first level of our building: the Church, as well as the Narthex, Great Room, and the Niehaus room. I appreciate the parishioners who have shared positive comments. A number were intrigued by my comments about the windows, especially the comment that pointed out one misplaced piece of glass in the rear window. One parishioner (a friend for many years) said she detected an obsessivecompulsive perspective. Unable to speak to that!

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK

As I continue to write, your comments and questions are welcome and appreciated. ([email protected]) While not as significant as the church, the lower has an essential place in carrying out our ministry. We were fortunate about the timing of construction. For reasons I never understood, Cardinal Cody did not allow basements in new construction. We were fortunate that such a stricture was no longer operative when we built. The building committee was proactive in including 11/12/17

a basement. It has provided great space at a very reasonable cost – much less that what a separate structure would have cost. When the church opened in the Fall of ’95, the lower lever was unfinished, except for the offices. The lower level was built out over time, as funds became available. Funding for our building was through the Archdiocese; the “Arch” operates as a “bank” for parishes. A parish is not allowed to borrow from any other bank. Since our church loan was significant, we were required to complete the lower level on a cash basis. A word about the parish offices prior to our move to the new church facility. All offices were in the Rectory: a house in Creekside,

purchased from Gallagher and Henry. Soon after moving in, we finished the rectory basement, and added an outside entrance. The rectory basement was the location for the Religious Ed offices plus storage for all their material. Beginning in the fall of 1991, we began holding Religious Education sessions at Centennial School. The upstairs at the rectory had a “study” that I used for my office. The “dining room” was Barbs’ office; the “living room” a meeting room used for multiple tasks. The rest of the house was my residence. The Creekside house continues as a residence for Frs. Artur and Steve.

We moved the offices to the church facility in 1995 – just after the arrival of our first associate, Mike Weidman. It made the Creekside house a more relaxing place to live, no longer “above the store” or in my case “in the store”. In the beginning, all the offices were located at the west end. There were six individual offices; a large space for reception; storage of supplies; copier etc. The religious Ed staff worked at three desks in the open space. The initial offices in the church facility worked well. But soon we needed more room and began to expand into the unfinished areas of the Lower Level.

The move to the church facility was a great relief.

WISDOM, © J.S. Paluch Co., Inc. We consider wisdom today. The first reading from the book of Wisdom presents this precious gift as a feminine spirit, a very desirable virtue sought by many and graciously present to all who seek her.

mark the passing of time. The foolish, on the other hand, not planning ahead, will be in the dark. Both of these readings tell us how accessible wisdom is to all who simply and honestly seek it.

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate wisdom in a practical, measurable way. The wise will conserve their resources, use them prudently, and

Paul's words to the Thessalonians are not about wisdom, but describe one result of true wisdom: To the wise person of faith even death holds no terror.

Our faith in Jesus' resurrection tells us we will all one day rise to new life in Christ.
