Waldwick is a young high school, and has many programs and facilities which might be taken for granted they have existed since our school's inception . . .

. . . However, it must be remembered that we are attending Waldwick High School during its "growing" phase. It is too easy to lose sight of the fact that our entire curriculum . . .

is one of the state's newest. In many diverse areas of study, Waldwick High School makes unique efforts to prepare students for the future . . .

Arts, music, business education, history, languages, mathematics, physical education, and the natural sciences are included in our school's basic course of study. Each area has offerings designed for the student desiring a general education. Foreign language study is introduced in the junior high school, and given the Audio-Lingual Method approach. The program continues through senior high school, with the emphasis more on literature as the student progresses. Still, it is the early exposure to the subject which helps to foster a desire, within the student, to pursue the subject further. Whether or not he does is his own choice; but that choice is based on the experience gained in early years. The program exemplifies the spirit of the school - educate generally, and help the student who is aware of future plans as well as the student who remains undecided . . .

In the area of visual arts, the student is offered a full program of study, and may take art for any number of years. _ _ ; However, the full four years of study need not be pursued for a student to gain a basic knowledge of art. The department, in addition, provides for an "art major", through a senior year program of independent work. The senior art student plans his own course of study, making it possible for him to become more proficient in an area of his own choosing. He is free to strengthen his talents, since he has already procured the rudiments of art during previous years. He has every opportunity to plan his future, with the assistance of the department. Waldwick High School's Home Economics Department has, from its beginning, provided widely varied courses of study for the senior high years. This year a new course was added, with the hopes that the more advanced student would be prepared for the "ultimate test", homemaking. The Family Living course, a major subject for fourth-year Home Ec. students, covers the myriad details of homemaking in the modern world. Investigation of how a family relates to society, and how a homemaker relates to her family, is conducted during the course of the school year. In its purest sense, the Family Living course gives the advanced student preparation for the years to come. . .

The Business Education Department provides for students' future planning through a multi-faceted workschool program. The program has a group which provides Salaried secretarial help at the several town schools. Members of this Work-Study group, having mastered their classroom skills, spend the afternoons away from academics, learning practical skills. Another group is the Distributive Education group, which goes beyond the bounds of Work-Study in that the enrollees leave the school system completely. They secure positions in retailing and sales positions; after taking required courses in the morning, they proceed to their places of employment. The newest group, Trade and Industry, is part of a "new movement" throughout the country. It is a project which exposes a high schoolage man to his chosen field before he graduates. Unlike an apprenticeship, participation in T&I gives practical knowledge to the student, but not a total mastery of the area. Trade and Industry, Distributive Education, Work-Study, all give a student the kind of practical knowledge which will help him plan his future wisely . . .

Mathematic study has generally undergone quite a change in the last decade. Throughout the "growing" years at Waldwick U.S. this change has been taken into account. . . The result is an accelerated course which enables the college-bound student to take four years of high school-level mathematics by the end of his Junior year. In the Senior year he is then able to elect Calculus, a college-level course. This course prepares the student for the Advanced Placement Test, recognized by colleges as an effective means of deciding whether or not the student should be given credit for the high school's course as a college course. For the potential mathematics major, the course is invaluable. . . . . . For the liberal arts student, the course is valuable in that it will help him to fulfill the college's mathematics prerequisites earlier in his academic career. With credit for the course, he can concentrate on courses more important to him. For any college-bound student, the overall accelerated course is a valuable part of the schools' curriculum, an ideal way for him to prepare for his own chosen future, college.

Natural Sciences are offered to the student throughout the high school years.

Various programs are made available, such as the relativelynew Biological Sciences Curriculum Study courses and the Physical Sciences Study Committee Course. The four-year sciences student is prepared in diverse areas, gaining a general view of the subject. An accelerated program for college-bound students is a feature of the Science Department. An enrollee in this program will receive four years of high school-level sciences by the end o\' his junior year. After completing all requirements, he may elect an "advanced" science. The purpose oi' the two senior-year science courses is to give the student any and all background he may need for college. Advanced Biology and Advanced Physics, though decidedly different in terms of subject matter, are similar in one respect they allow the qualified student to gain all the preparation possible for a future of which he is basically sure, college. The guiding principle for the advanced sciences is that the student "needs knowledge". . .

The years spent at Waldwiek High School form one phase of a continuous educational process called lite. Each new year brings one group of students into this phase, and sends another group out. This story is concerned with what happened in the interim. . .

. . . As in all of life, it is up to the individual to avail himself of the opportunities open to him at Waldwick High School. The school provides the tools, but the student must accept and utilize them . . .

. . . Civilization is the product of those who took up tools to build, and of those who did not. The challenge to build a society within the bounds of Waldwick High School is given to

10

each student each year. How well this challenge is met will be determined by time alone,

A Midsummer Night's Dream By William Shakespeare

"Funny how high school doth age one so. "

'How I dote on thee. "

68

Masters of modern and baroque music provided the strains to which Waldwick High School's student-players presented their first Shakespearean production. "A Mid-Summer Night's Dream". Bizarre, sensational, almost enthralling, the make-up and costumes gave the audience a feeling of fantasy, and of the supernatural. Sparkling, airy, and scintillating were the stage settings and the performances of the Junior and Senior Class members. Rapidly and smoothly the drama flowed from scene to scene, from act to act, making lull use of "the Bard of Avon's" genius in drama. The simplicity of form in stage setting lent itself to rapid entrances and exits, and helped to heighten the effect of sensational-looking dramatis personae. Weeks and months of preparation on the part ol~ many culminated in a thrilling, artful, sparkling presentation.

The newly crowned queen is surrounded by her court.

Sharon Reardon was selected by the Waldwick High School Athletic Booster Association as the 1968 Sports Queen. Denise Coolong, Devon Beals, Kathy Biegel and Barbara Cook were chosen as members of her court. Approximately 15 girls in all competed for the title on the night of October 26. Sharon and the four members of her court were judged on the basis of poise, appearance, and clarity of expression in answering a particular question each was asked.

The Coronation Ceremony was held on November 11 before the home football game against Northern Valley Regional H.S. Sharon received the crown that marks the beginning of her reign and each of the girls received flowers from the Boosters Association.

An excited court awaits the ride downfield for the coronation.

Color Guard Crisply, in perfect formation, the Color Guard marches onto the field, and the football season begins anew. With the cold precision of a well-oiled machine, the squad presents the colors to the spectators, and to the fateful afternoon sky. Serving as the guardain of the national flag, and the high school banner, the Color Guard lends an air of seriousness to an exciting event. At the half-time the squad appears again, lending the precision for which it is noted to the entertaining "entr'acte". The panorama of field, sky and humanity is genuinely entranced by the presence of the Color Guard.

Contributing greatly to the half-time excitement of every football game, Waldwick High School's Majorettes are a bit of magic, a fletting moment of grace in the midst of a pitched battle. With undying spirit and implicit form and style, the squad graces the field during its all-too-brief performances, lending fuel to the fires of school spirit.

Marching Band

Mr. Laurent Gareau directs the band.

Band leader: Bob Bonczek

Autumn air, crisp in its own right, is suddenly warmed and enriched by that magical quantity, music. The Waldwick High School marching Band is liquid, yet regimented, as it flows onto the playing field. The colors and sounds of the day lend themselves to an overall effect of enthusiasm, of determination, of vitality, and the band is prime contributor to that effect. The closely-knit, mechanically timed unit performing before the spirited crowd is not a product of some spontaneous reaction. Rather, the complex formations, for the spectators' benefit and enjoyment, have been developed over hours and days, and weeks. Planning the movements of many bodies in unison is the prime task of the band captain, who is responsible for the impressive show of spirit which greets each game crowd. As the season, the team performances, the great plays and rainy days fade into memory, so does the image of the band mingle in the mind with golden colors and vibrant tones.

Challenge II

Daricn Zoppo Editor-in-Chief, Bob Bonczek Manager, Janice Petzold Assistant Editor.

Business

Possibly the greatest contribution a graduating class leaves to the student body, and to posterity, is the yearbook. Throughout the year this puzzle is formed, drawing its constituent parts from the myriad features of school life. Pictorially depicting the year's history, Challenge II is the greatest tangible contribution the Class of 1968 will make to the high school . . . a dossier, a conglomeration, a montage, a diary. It is the product of months of effort on the part of a number of members of the Senior Class, and of their yearbook advisor. It presents, in painfully concentrated form, all the programs, people, and problems connected with the last year of our class's presence here at Waldwick High School. The yearbook's goal is not to give a picture of the school as a public relations brochure might. It is not designed as a curriculum guide. Rather, it is a depiction of the high school, and of those who populate it those who make it what it is. -

Faced with the realization that this monumental task, the production of a yearbook, is completed, I am relieved. Yet I feel that my greatest obligation, the expression of thanks to those who labored so tirelessly and long, must be met before my work is done. My first thought is that I have placed myself in quite a precarious position. My responsibility, as author of what could be called epilog, apologia, or simply thanks, is to specifically thank those who contributed to the production of this book. In doing so, I am running the risk of perpetrating the most complete insult, neglect, to someone. The most politic, which is to say, in this case, cowardly, thing to do would be to simply end my note of gratitude now. But though the note is accurate, it is not complete - what is politic is not necessarily just. With this thought in mind, let me conclude by thanking those individuals without whose numberless hours of assistance this yearbook would not exist. . . Diane Bladen, Patrons and Ads section Editor, and our "funding agency"; Bob Bonczek, Business Manager and permanent fixture in the yearbook "sweat shop"; Carolyn Ott, omni-present and tireless staff member; Shell Potter and Jim Severs, leading members of a virtually full-time photographic team; Jan Petzold, Assistant Editor and "Chief mechanic, " who helped assemble the perpetual proliferation of pages (and greased the wheel of progress); and he who can only be called "creator", Mr. Frederick Heidloff yearbook advisor. My task stands completed, and I can only reiterate my singular thought. . . Thank you, D.J.Z., Editor-in-Chief
