FROM THE FOUNDATION BOARD,

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT,

As 2009 came to a close, I am pleased to report that donors and friends of the University continued to play a vital role in expanding the local impact and influence of this great institution.

In my first year at the helm of Utah Valley University, my under standing and appreciation of the long and noble tradition of stu dent success at UVU has deepened considerably.

The ongoing economic slump represents a challenging environment in which to raise funds. But with only 45 percent of the University’s annual operating budget funded by the State of Utah (the lowest percentage among public institutions of higher learning), the need for private support is even more compelling.

What was once just a vision, UVU’s culture has become a fierce focus on student success through serious academic programming, inclusivity and an engaging learning environment. Today, more than ever, that culture is transforming the educational experience and making us a different kind of university.

Unlike many financial ventures these days, public and private support for an extraordinary institution like UVU will always be a profitable investment. With more than 4,000 employees and almost 29,000 students contributing roughly 765,000 volunteer hours, the economic impact of UVU is more than $303 million each year in direct and indirect spending to this region.

Our vision is achieved through an intellectually stimulating environment that challenges, yet encourages inquiring students. As experts in their fields, our faculty members invite students to explore and experiment, exchange ideas, and immerse themselves in relevant, hands-on learning experiences. Integrated in each student’s experience is integrity of thought and high ethical behavioral standards.

In fiscal year 2008-2009, the UVU Foundation received private support totaling more than $5.8 million to help support student success. The UVU Foundation is committed to being a good steward of the funds entrusted to it. Gifts from private donors are precious whether they support the All-Steinway School, a world-class science building, provide much needed student scholarships, or support myriad other programs and initiatives.

Because we understand that the citizens of the 21st century need competencies not eas ily developed in a traditional “chalk-and-talk” lecture, our engaging experiences extend learning beyond the classroom, blurring the boundaries between disciplines and leadingedge technologies. By bridging content knowledge, application skills, and societal needs, engaged learning allows students to participate in intense collaborative projects that shape and inspire them for greater success.

Working closely with President Holland, Foundation leadership is looking forward to leveraging its experience in the corporate and nonprofit sectors to identify new ways that the board can add value and impact to this exciting institution. For UVU, the true measure of greatness is the positive economic, social and cultural impact the campus has on our students, and the world they will serve.

Because your incredible generosity made it possible, I hope you will celebrate with me Utah Valley University’s recent accomplishments that mark the latest chapter in our history. Thank you for partnering in such an important vision that will influence our community, state, and country.

We look forward to working together with you, our valued friends, to maintain the positive impact that your support has had and will continue to have on UVU — and beyond. Sincerely, Matthew S. Holland President, Utah Valley University Ralph Yarro Chairman, UVU Foundation Board

2009 ENGAGED

The Losee Center for Student Success (formerly the Losee Library) opened in September 2009. It hosts the UVU honors program and leadership and service learning centers. With so many related resources in one place, students can utilize a variety of advising services under one roof and advisors can more easily refer and introduce students to other services.

UVU: A BLOSSOMING UNIVERSITY 7

8

In 2009, UVU continued to thrive and flourish as the state’s newest university. The momentum that got UVU here still persists. As the institution develops as Utah’s newest university, UVU’s reach is growing as well. Here’s a small sampling of UVU’s recent successes and current endeavors.

INNER SPACE During the past year, UVU added some much-needed facilities to its Orem campus. This is vital to the growth of UVU, as the campus currently has roughly 121 square feet per student, the lowest of any institution in the state. The newly renovated Losee Center for Student Success opened for service last September. It houses more than 20 departments related to student affairs. The move centralized services for students representing nearly every aspect of a student’s experience, from prospective student services to advisement and internships. The Noorda Regional Theatre’s grand opening, also in September, began with, appropriately, an innovative production of “Charlotte’s Web” using life-size puppets. The theatre continues its commitment to quality youth theatre this summer with its first annual youth summer camp focused on all aspects of performance art, from playwriting to singing and dancing to acting to directing – even lighting and sound stage work through collaboration with UVU’s digital media department – all taught by regional professionals. When Matthew S. Holland became the sixth UVU President in 2009, one of his first goals was to garner funding for a new science building. That goal was achieved through the dedication of multiple members of UVU, the community and the Utah State Legislature. In March 2010, the Legislature voted to approve $45 million for a new science building, which was one of the top capital projects for the state over the past few years. Crews are slated to break ground in late June on the 160,000-square-foot facility. The building was given a critical boost by the support of Marc and Debbie Bingham, who committed to match any science-related donation funds during 2010, up to $1 million.

Matthew S. Holland, sixth president of UVU, with his wife Paige at UVU’s 2009 presidential inauguration. President Holland, who officially took office June 1, joined UVU from Brigham Young University and brought an acclaimed public speaking background and numerous academic accolades to the position. “It’s an absolute honor,” Holland said of his appointment. “This institution plays a vital role in a community I really care about. We look forward to throwing all the energy we have into serving the UVU community well ... We have a great team.”

DISTINCTIONS 11

As the newest university in Utah, UVU is working to set its unique fingerprint on the pulse of the community. Over the past year, the institution has been recognized for excellence in myriad areas. In late 2009, UVU joined elite company with its official designation as an All-Steinway school. Students in the music department now have 28 exceptional Steinway pianos at their fingertips, all due to the support and determination of dedicated donors. The UVU Center for the Advancement of Leadership (CAL) gained well-deserved recognition in October, garnering the 10th spot nationally in Leadership Excellence Magazine. UVU beat out Duke, Yale and Stanford and landed just under Harvard’s business school. In a nod to UVU’s technical roots, five construction technology students recently took their first-ever top honors at the National Association of Home Builders’ annual Residential Con struction Management Competition in Las Vegas. Team members Alex Evans, Amy Carter, Lisa Seacrest, Peter Geilman and Steven Cooper, working under associate professor DeWayne Erdmann, spent about 100 hours on the project, preparing detailed, cost-effective plans for a home to be built in St. Louis. Their design not only met local Missouri codes, but qualified for the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) silver level standard of green building.

UVU Athletics became the only school in history to jump directly from junior college to the NCAA Division I, a rare feat in itself, but the Wolverines showed their stunning prowess by also taking home four Great West Conference Championship titles their first year in the ring. Two of the titles went to the men’s and women’s cross country teams who dominated in New York last fall, sweeping the team titles and earning an impressive array of individual accolades. The women’s soccer team, led by Katey Turner, scored their first NCAA cham pionship in New Jersey last November. After a rocky season, Jenna Johnson, Kaycee Mans field, Julie Smith and Asumi Nakayama rebounded and drove the women’s basketball team to a championship win over top-seeded North Dakota in March of this year.

STUDENT SUCCESS UVU’s commitment to excellence is perhaps no better demonstrated than by the accom plishments of the institution’s students. Jorgen Hansen currently sports a 4.0 GPA on his way to earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He is an honors scholarship recipient and has already been published in Cor nell University’s Logos Journal, which recognizes outstanding undergraduate papers from departments all over the world. He has also presented his research at five conferences. Jalise Hinton’s graphic design senior project was a community-sweeping, awareness-raising billboard campaign that educated drivers on the danger of texting while driving. She cre ated three different designs and installed them on 18 billboards in Provo, plus one in the Salt Lake area.

In 2009, after a seven-year journey, UVU Athletics became an official member of the NCAA Division I, thanks to high marks from the NCAA over the years. Division I status per mits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to compete at the highest level on a national basis, with access to NCAA championship and postseason events.

Larry Hanks, a non-traditional Navajo student, was initially a reluctant scholar. He gradu ated this April in Technology Management, and has fallen in love with learning because of UVU’s attention to his culture and to his success. He will now be a motivating example of achievement to other Native Americans.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS 19

UVU’s friends and benefactors are seeing the institution’s needs and filling them by dedicat ing time, talents and resources. There are so many generous people who deserve recogni tion, but here is just a small sampling of donors’ contributions in 2009.

ELDER QUEST Elder Quest is a group of senior citizens involved at UVU through the Community and Continuing Education program. In 2004, they established the UVU Elder Quest Scholarship Fund, which was later endowed. The scholarship is awarded to non-traditional full-time students who are returning to higher education because of life changes such as divorce, death in the family, job loss or a need to update skills. Because of the economic decline in 2008, endowment funding was frozen, and there were to be no schol arships for the 2009/2010 school year. But the 180 members of Elder Quest rallied. Joan Hahn, the Elder Quest Scholarship Committee Chairperson, explained the situation to her mem bers, most of whom are retired college-educated professionals, and asked them to donate, at their annual seminar. “And our members stepped up. We put our shoulders to the wheel and said this was not going unfunded this year,” Hahn said of the experience. The group raised $8,750 to provide five students full tuition scholarships for one semester, divvied up between fall semester 2009 and spring semester 2010. But the generosity didn’t stop there. Funds are still frozen this year, but the group already raised enough money at their April 2010 spring seminar to fund five more scholarships for the upcoming 2010/2011 school year. KAY ELTON The Wee Care Center is a state licensed child care center for low-income single parents attending UVU, the Mountainland Applied Technology College (MATC) or Turning Point. Childcare is provided for children aged six weeks to 12 years. The center, located in a remodeled home on the east end of campus, boasts a low child-teacher ratio, and provides age-appropriate activities and nutritious meals and snacks. Parents pay a minimal charge based on a sliding scale and are also expected to provide some in-kind services. “They turn hundreds of students away each week because they do not have a large enough facility. But this is a key service,” said Ali Johnson, a UVU donor liaison and founder of “Start Something Beautiful,” a program that inspires women to share their time, talents and treasures with philanthropic endeavors. At one “Beautiful” event in late 2009, Kay Elton was inspired. She wanted to help more than one student. Upon hearing of the excellence of the Wee Care program and the need to expand its reach, the mother of 10 donated $10,000 toward a new building for the center.

In 2009 Elder Quest raised enough money to provide full tuition scholarships for one semester to five UVU students.

MARY D. NELSON Mary D. Nelson passed away May 6, 2010, at the age of 96, leaving a hole in the heart of UVU. She was not one to wait to be asked to help, but was anxiously engaged in good causes at UVU. Mary, a lover of travel, was very supportive of the institution’s study abroad programs. For example, Hilarie Burrow is a hearing-impaired art student who hoped to study abroad in Italy in 2009. In addition to funding her own trip expenses, her inclusion in the program would require the services of a licensed Cued Language Transliterator. Thanks to donations from Mary and others, this dream became possible. Last year, when Mary found out there was also no scholarship money for UVU’s 2009-2010 French Studies Program, she immediately stepped in and donated $5,000 towards the scholarship fund, paving the way for seven students who are currently studying in France through June 2010. She will be missed.

Thanks to Dan and Peggy Cambell’s generous donation, UVU has one of the finest locker rooms in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. This new space is an excellent recruiting tool for student-athletes when they tour the athletic facilities.

MARY ROBINSON A small, sleek Steinway piano sits in room GT511g on the Orem Campus, otherwise known as the piano lab in the music department. Just above the keyboard, a small sign tells only the tiniest story of how that beautiful instrument came to UVU. In Escalante, Utah, in the 1920s, Mary Robinson’s grandmother, Ada Dalley, was the resident piano teacher, choir director and organist for the small community. “My grandfather surprised my grandmother with a grand piano one year on her birthday. This allowed my grandmother to share her talent with the community,” Robinson said. Upon Ada’s death, that beautiful piano was donated to the local Escalante chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It accompanied thousands of churchgoers on hundreds of Sundays. Years later, when Mary’s father heard the church was to be remodeled with a new piano and organ, he pur chased the grand piano back from the church. “He had it refurbished and gave it to my mother, Lillian S. Munson, for her birthday. What a treasure it was,” Robinson said. While working with Daynes Music to acquire the new Steinway pianos for UVU, Mary remembered the joy of the heritage piano from her childhood home. “My husband and I thought it was appropriate to make a donation to UVU in my mother’s name. A beautiful piano now has a plaque bearing my mother’s name for all students to use in perfecting their musical talent,” she said. Robinson, a member of the School of the Arts Advisory Board, is one example of the many men and women that came together to move UVU to an “All-Steinway School.” The School of the Arts received just over $1 million for the effort. Donors included Mary and her husband Mark, Skip Daynes, Beverley Taylor Sorenson, Charles Dahlquist, Joel and Jill Dunn, the Nancy Peery Marriott Foundation, Zions Bank and two very generous individuals who wish to remain anonymous. DAN & PEGGY CAMPBELL One of the main tools for coaches recruiting potential student-athletes is a tour of the athletic facilities. Dan and Peggy Campbell helped UVU remodel the men’s basketball locker room to the tune of about $150,000. The previous locker rooms were cramped and old, but through the Campbells, the basketball program combined two smaller ones into one large new facility. “The new men’s locker room is one of the finest Division I locker rooms out there, and is a great re cruiting tool which echoes a serious university with a serious men’s basketball program,” said Brad Mertz, assistant athletic director of external affairs. “All made possible because of Dan and Peggy Campbell. They knew our need and really stepped up to make the locker room happen for us.”

22

UVU was designated in 2009 by Steinway and Sons of New York as an official All-Steinway School, putting Utah’s newest university in the elite company of programs such as Juilliard and the Yale School of Music. More than $1 million in donations allowed UVU to upgrade to the acclaimed Steinway instruments.
