Alice Foronjy (nee Fanarjian), age 96, of Saddle Brook, formerly of Union City and North Bergen, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Beloved wife of the late Said Foronjy. Loving mother of Dawn Donofrio and her husband Ed. Dear grandmother of Michael and Melissa Donofrio. Loving aunt of many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Alice is predeceased by her sister Lucie Baroutjian. Mrs. Foronjy worked as a hat designer and mender in the millinery and garment industries. She was a long time parishioner of Holy Cross Armenian Church in Union City and recently a parishioner of St. Leon Armenian Church in Fair Lawn. She was the oldest living member of the Women's Guild at Holy Cross and devoted many years of service to the organization. Alice was also a member of the Saddle Brook Golden Agers for 20 years. Arnold Simpson, age 91 of Saddle Brook passed away November 15, 2013. Arnold was born September 11, 1922 in Hackensack, NJ and lived most of his life in Saddle Brook. He was a self employed General Contractor and Builder of new construction and renovation projects. Arnold was a military veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. Arnold is survived by his sister, Virginia "Ginger" Petzoldt, his step-son, Tom Arma and his wife Julie of Tubac, AZ, and several nieces and nephews. Arnold was predeceased by his father Arnold Simpson, his mother Martha (nee Finley) who would remarry Anthony Mondore, and who became Arnold's step-father. Arnold is also predeceased by his sisters, Doris Woelk and Carol Viglione, and his beloved wife, Stella (nee Arma) whom he had married on May 29, 1971. Stella's passion for gardening rubbed off on Arnold, and it remained one of his fondest activities in retirement, especially his vegetable gardening. Dr. Richard E. Onorevole

Dr Richard E. Onorevole., resident of Saddle Brook was called to his eternal rest by his Lord Jesus on October 27, 2013. He was born in Clifton on June 9, 1928, and a graduate of Clifton High School. His class yearbook listed his ambition to "get married and be happy" a goal he achieved with his beloved wife, Catherine H. (Belli). They met at her cousin's wedding and it was love at first sight. Three years later on April 20, 1952 they were married at St. Brendan's RC Church, Clifton, by Rev. James J. Rugel. His treasure was their seven children: Richard M. and Marie C. (Mulhaul) of Rockaway, Marie E. Onorevole of Dingmans Ferry, PA, John and Patricia (Opperman) of Chester, NY, Nancy C. and her husband Michael Lennon of Long Valley, Joan H. and her husband John Bladek of Clermont, FL, Joseph and Lisa (Murray) of Lafayette and Charles E. and Joanne (Morrison) of Mount Olive, along with nineteen grandchildren, seven adorable great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his brother Carmen A., sisters Italia Edith Onorevole and Mrs. Clara (Rudy) Di Napoli. He taught his sons, by example the important concepts that they should know about being a father, a man and a friend. He taught his daughters patience, kindness and understanding. He was grateful to his wife, Catherine for all of her assistance, understanding and love as he pursued his many interests in helping others. His children described their father as "a Renaissance man" who loved all things Italian: the food, the music, the language and the country, especially, a visit to his parent's birth place. Dr. Onorevole was an academic, educator, author and trustee. His leadership policy was to be sure that the schools were properly managed and to work as a team. He received his Doctorate Degree at Teachers College, Columbia University; Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts at Montclair State University. His memorable 37 years in education in several districts were in New Jersey culminating as Weehawken Superintendent of Schools for 16 years, retiring in 1990, Assistant Superintendent in Piscataway and South Plainfield; Administrator and teacher in Englewood Public Schools; teacher and department chairman, Clifton Public Schools and an Adjunct Professor at Kean College. His thoughtful teaching was recognizing the potential of students as future American citizens and leaders. Dr. Onorevole was an innovator and in the 1970's, he introduced computers for school finance and as an instructional tool for students. He recognized teachers and students needed to be in the forefront of societal changes and to be prepared for the impact of technology in education and business. At that time, computers were not readily accepted and considered a threat to replace teachers. Dr. Onorevole was credited with other innovations in science space studies, learning labs, television programs conducted by students, promoted of the Weehawken Writing Project and founder of the Englewood "One for One" tutorial program. Dr. Onorevole was committed to his community and served as a Trustee, Bergen County Community College; as Vice President, Board of Trustees, Bergen County Vocational and Technical School and a trustee of the Weehawken Public Library Board, a member of the State Board of Examiners, NJ Department of Education and served on the New jersey Committee for the Humanities. He was a recipient of Distinguished Service Award by the Board of Freeholders, Bergen County and the NJ State Board of Examiners. At Montclair State, he was elected to honor societies: Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Omega Pi, president; Montclair Student Government, treasurer and "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". He was a fraternity member of Phi Lambda Pi, played football and was on the fencing team and the Newman Club. He was a member of several professional organizations: the NJ Association of School Administrators, President of the Hudson County Superintendants Roundtable, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Educational Research Association, Bergen County Education Association, NJEA, President of the Englewood Teachers Association, and director of Englewood's "One-For-One" tutorial program. His articles were published in the "Clearing House", "NJEA Review", and doctoral dissertation at Teachers College, Columbia University. Hon. Richard E. Onorevole was council President and Councilman serving four terms on the Saddle Brook Township Council, a twenty five year member of the Township Planning Board and Chairman of the township's first Master Plan. He was a past President of the Saddle Brook Republican Club and a Republican County Committeeman. He was active in sports and community affairs recognizing a commitment we all share for our youth serving as a Committeeman for Boy Scout Troop 216; Saddle Brook Little League manager and the 1967 All Star Team; manager for the Patriots, a Stan Musical Traveling Team and Township Summer Recreation, Director for 10 years. He served his nation as a Tech/Sgt., US Army during the Korean War; Commander of Taejon Chapter #170 Korean War Veterans Association, Chairman of the Korean War Memorial Monument, located at Fair Lawn Parkway, Saddle Brook; member of the American Legion Post #415, Saddle Brook and Weehawken Elks #1456. His recreational pursuits included a love for cooking, tending his garden, raising, raising plants in his green house, golfing and fishing in Canada, the Great Lakes, Alaska and Florida and sharing his love for gardening and the environment with this children and grandchildren. Richard and Catherine enjoyed many cruises and traveling throughout the United States from Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, snorkeling in the Caribbean and tours through Italy, Israel, France, Monte Carlo, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Dr. Onorevole was a communicant and lector at St. Philip the Apostle, and chairman of the "Annual Prayerful Walk for Life" and a member of the St. Philip Holy Name Society. He was a Past Faithful Navigator, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Bishop O'Connor Assembly #647, Color Corpsman of the Year and Past Grand Knight, Sacred Heart Council #2842, Rochelle Park. Funeral services shall be on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 8:30 AM from the Kugler Funeral Home, 311 Fifth Street, Saddle Brook and 9:30 AM Mass at St. Philip the Apostle RC Church, 488 Saddle River Road, Saddle Brook followed by entombment, Calvary Cemetery & Mausoleum, Paterson. Louise Sperling, 92, of Saddle Brook, on Oct. 17, 2013. Louise worked at Presto Lock in Garfield, NJ for over 40 years. She resided in Saddle Brook for 84 years. Michael Mazzei, age 97 of Hoboken, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013. Loving father of Jean Jadevaia. Loving mother of Richard Handzo and his wife Robin and Robert Handzo and his wife Judy. Dear grandmother of Karen Madigan (Michael), Robert J. Handzo, Bethany Patel (Vishal), Todd Handzo (Heather) and Brenna Breece (John). Great grandmother of Justin and Haley Madigan and Ajay and Kieran Patel. Sister of Elena Feldmer and Robert Kowalski. Jeffrey W. Kurz, 88, of Leonia, who had a long career as a professor of speech and drama at the City University of New York and served on the Leonia Board of Education in the 1970s, died Friday, Sept. 27, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Cleveland on August 24, 1925, Kurz served in the Coast Guard during World War II in the Battle for the North Atlantic and later was deeply involved in the Religious Society of Friends. Committed to peace, he was a draft counselor during the Vietnam era. Kurz is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janis G. (Grimes) Kurz, and three children: Nancy Wood, of Northiam, England, Jeffery W. Kurz, Jr., of Middletown, Conn., and David L. Kurz, of Wallington, N.J. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and a son-in-law, Timothy Wood. Following the Second World War, Kurz earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, followed by his masters and doctorate degrees from Columbia University. He taught at CCNY and at Baruch College. He was a poet, playwright, a member of Actors Equity, and for many years acted in and directed productions by the Players’ Guild of Leonia. A memorial service will be held at noon Oct. 27 at the Friends Quaker Meeting House, 224 Highwood Ave, in Ridgewood, NJ 201.445.8450. Suchow Scott Chowtavi, of Garfield passed away on May 29, 2013 at his home. He fought a courageous battle with lung cancer. Suchow was born in Bangkok, Thailand.
