FROM THE BISHOP OF SIOUX FALLS Dear Friends, Parents and Supporters of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools, As the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, one of my privileges is to oversee the Catholic schools of our diocese. When I first came to Sioux Falls, I was very impressed by the Sioux Falls Catholic School system and its leader, Dr. Tom Lorang. I have found Dr. Lorang to be a man of great faith and integrity. While sad to see him retire, we are deeply grateful that he has devoted much of his professional career to making our Sioux Falls Catholic Schools stronger, with a true sense of Catholic identity. Dr. Lorang helped the schools transition from primarily religious leadership to nearly all lay teachers and administrators. His continued focus on the mission of the SFCS, "to promote a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence," has been a true model, not only for our system but for Catholic school systems throughout the country. A change in leadership can be unsettling to those underneath that leader. I have faith in the committees that spent many months interviewing potential replacements for Dr. Lorang, and feel very confident that we have a strong leader in Mr. Robert Wehde. I look forward to working with him and continuing to promote our mission to promote Gospel values and academic excellence to those placed in our care. This report notes how essential you are to having built this great system and how essential you are to assuring its future. Thank you for your generosity in so many ways. May God bless you and your families. Yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Paul J. Swain Bishop of Sioux Falls

From the Superintendent: Dear Friends and Family,

Dr. Tom Lorang Superintendent

After all of these years, it's hard to believe I am writing my final letter as your Superintendent. As I pause to reflect, the number one feeling I have is a profound sense of gratitude. I am extremely grateful to so many people for so many different reasons, beginning with the families who have entrusted their children to the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. Thank you for placing your trust in us and investing your dollars in a Catholic education for your children. To the SFCS personnel – I have been blessed to have been able to work with some of the best educators, administrators and support staff around. You have given your heart and soul to being the best teachers, principals, secretaries, custodial and kitchen staff, and I am so proud of how fully you embrace and live out our mission. To our alumni and supporters - thank you for your continued generosity that has helped us raise money for tuition assistance, teachers' salaries, the new building, and facility improvements. To the countless volunteers who give of their time in the classrooms, help host fundraising events, serve on committees,

and more - you are the backbone of our system and we just simply couldn't do what we do without you. This May, as I journeyed from school to school to say my goodbyes, I found myself thinking how fortunate I have been to be able to combine my passion for education with my faith, and to have had a career working with, and for, the most wonderful people in the world. Thank you for inviting me and my family into your community 36 years ago. Thank you for having faith in your child’s education and supporting the mission of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. My heart is full. Know that my continued prayers will be with you as our system moves forward under the extremely capable guidance of Mr. Robert Wehde. I'm not going away, though. You'll still see me in the stands, cheering on the Knights! Sincerely, Dr. Tom Lorang

From the Board President: few of the many areas in which your constant support helps meet the continual need for advancement and growth. Great Places - New Faces The anticipation of a new school year brings many feelings. There is excitement, a little fear and a whole lot of wonderment. At SFCS, we are feeling all of those emotions, too. Many changes are taking place. Starting this school year without our traditional leader seems strange. And yet, there is synergy that comes with new people sharing their gifts and talents. With the support of the entire SFCS community, we know that these new administrators will be nothing but successful here. We welcome these wonderful "new faces" to our SFCS community:

6

President of SFCS - Robert Wehde: "This organization is uniquely gifted and significant in Catholic education. What you have here is truly special, created by visionary leaders in the past and supported by the parishes and diocesan leadership as well. The support, the educational offerings and the emphasis on Catholic faith all combine to provide a role model for other organizations wanting to sustain Catholic education in the 21st century. I look at SFCS as an example for the entire nation. This is a significant and wonderful opportunity for me to serve."

Karen Oltmanns, Principal of St. Katharine Drexel School: "The greatest blessing of the Catholic School setting is always being able to role model the Catholic faith and teach in a Christ centered community where all the stakeholders have high expectations for faith building and high academic standards. It is an honor to be selected to serve as Principal at St. Katharine Drexel School in this well respected Sioux Falls Catholic School system. It is inspiring to unite with a community that is proud of their accomplishments and one that continues to have forwardthinking ideals in supporting and promoting Catholic Education."

Joan Mahoney, Director of Instruction: "Over the past 24 years, the blessings my family has felt in being a part of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools are too numerous to count. The biggest blessing we have felt is the faithful support of the entire SFCS community through good times and bad. As I expand my role in the SFCS this year, I want to assist our schools and our new president as we transition to new leadership. Together we will work to maintain the tradition of community, faith, and excellence that defines the SFCS."

Colleen Davis, Principal of St. Lambert School: "I love watching children grow in the love of God and also being able to tie the church teachings into everyday life which was something I could not do in a public school. Giving children a firm foundation in the Catholic faith along with a strong academic education is a real gift for them. I found my own love and understanding of the Catholic church has grown tremendously too. You cannot find a more dedicated, committed, loving staff than in a Catholic school. I am so thankful to be given the opportunity to be at St. Lambert’s. I cannot wait for the new school year to begin!"

Regan Manning, Principal of Holy Spirit School: "After teaching in the public school system for 12 years I had realized that something was missing. At the time I didn’t know what that 'thing' was. After some time of prayer and discernment it soon became evident to me that the missing element was Jesus. The biggest blessing in my work in a Catholic school environment was attending school liturgies! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve encountered the Holy Spirit during these services. Another blessing is the opportunity to pray with a child or staff member that is hurting or needs healing. It is so powerful."

“From what we get, we can make a living;

what we give, however, makes a life.” Each year, hundreds of parents in the Sioux Falls Catholic School system reach out to ask for help with their children’s tuition. Sometimes they need a lot of help; other times, just a little. For most, that help determines whether their children will remain in the school system, getting the excellent education and faith formation they desire for their child(ren). In the last couple of years, more families than ever have been asking for help. Resources were rapidly being depleted and the SFCS School Board challenged the Development team to come up with a way to help fund even more tuition assistance. With the idea that no one understands the value of an excellent Catholic education more than our alumni, we turned to past graduates to support a new fundraiser called, “Go Give O’G”. Last year was the first year of our one-day effort. While the goal of raising $50,000 in one day was not met, $31,000 was brought in. This year, however, the goal was not only met but surpassed, with over $51,000 being donated!

"Why We Give" We asked alumni that gave what their reasons were for giving and were touched by the responses we got. Many like Timothy Gaspar, ’73, said they donated ‘to pay it forward for others’. Mary Paa Plucker, ’62, agrees. “I want to help send someone to a Catholic school. My education was most important to me.” Carolyn Pyper Koopman, ’63, says, “I’m hoping this will help with a child’s tuition. It was a struggle when I attended but my older brother, who was in the army, helped with my tuition.” Other alumni mentioned that not only did they get a good education, but that their children also benefitted from attending SFCS. Shawn Foy says, “O’G was great for me, but even better for my two daughters!” Jim Daniels, ’63, feels the same way. “O’G was a wonderful experience for all three of my children and a stepping stone into college and their future careers. We want to see it continue for future generations.” For a number of alumni, their reasons were very emotional. Mary Weisbecker Retka, ’69, donated in memory of her brother, Mike, who passed away when he was in school. Laurie “Dodie” Green Guntren, ’65, wrote, “After our mom passed, someone stepped in and helped our family with tuition. Happy to pass it on!” Several alumni gave in memory of some of their favorite teachers, many from religious communities. Some of our alumni gave because they appreciated all that their families gained from being a part of our Catholic school community, even if that meant a significant sacrifice to parents with large families. For many, it’s becoming a generational commitment. “I am one of three generations of the Staudenmaier family to experience a fine education at Sioux Falls Catholic Schools,” says Virginia Staudenmaier Lovett, ’57. What it boils down to, for most that gave, is helping kids have that same combination of faith formation and academic excellence that they experienced. “I give because of the faith-based education which continues to strengthen our Catholic schools, and the education where God and our Lord are an integral part,” says Mike Gillespie, ‘65. To ALL of our alumni who supported this effort, we are most grateful. We could tell you countless stories of kids who have benefitted over the years, but the reality is, many of those who gave ARE the ones who benefitted in the past. Those who received in the past get it, and they’re eternally grateful. And so are we.

“It feels good to help someone who needs it, no matter how small the amount.”

“O’G was a wonderful experience for all three of my children and a stepping stone into college and their future careers. We want to see it continue for future generations.”

Tuition Assistance The economy continues to recover yet some families in Sioux Falls still struggle to totally recover from the economic challenges of the past few years. Requests for tuition assistance from our SFCS families continue to increase. There are many sources of financial assistance for our families and students and, through those programs, more than $1.4 million was applied in the 2013-2014 school year.

What are ways students receive tuition assistance?

Donor Directed Tuition Assistance: Employee Tuition Credit: Sioux Falls Parishes’ Tuition Assistance: O’Gorman High School Work Program: Multi-Child Family Discount: St. Francis Grants: SFCS Certificate Rebates: Opportunity Grants: Scholarships for SFCS Students: Special Needs Grants: Seton Grants: Referral Program Grants: TOTAL TUITION ASSISTANCE:

$271,020.00 $262,750.00 $250,318.00 $204,970.00 $200,664.00 $90,000.00 $56,085.00 $44,299.00 $44,074.00 $42,071.00 $21,762.00 $400.00

$1,488,413.00

* The largest tuition assistance distribution ($271,020) is from donors that either specifically or anonymously gave to student(s) tuition. * The employee tuition credit is a reduction in the tuition rates for staff members who have children in the system. Because SFCS employees work for less, this is one benefit that can compensate them for their dedication to our mission. * The work study program at O'Gorman provided nearly $205,000 to help high school students with tuition by providing them opportunities to work around the school. * Families that participated in the SFCS Certificate Program earned more than $56,000 in tuition rebates, while contributing more than $170,000 towards teachers' salaries and benefits.

Who provides tuition assistance monies? * The Sioux Falls parishes provide more than $250,000 annually in tuition to families in need. * Many generous individuals and families donate to tuition assistance on a regular basis at SFCS events, through the SFCS annual pledge form, or by simply paying another child's tuition. * Many of our alumni donate through the Alumni 10x12 Program which allows them to give $10 per month for 12 months (10x12), half of which is invested in endowments for future tuition assistance needs, and the other half used for current needs. And our Alumni are donating on GO>>GIVE OG Day. The 2nd annual event raised more than $50,000 this year.

SFCS Foundation Dear Friends & Supporters, We are pleased to report that in this past year ten new endowments were added to the SFCS Foundation. Our community is remembering us as a vehicle to honor or memorialize loved ones or people who have made an impact in their lives. For example, the St. Lambert SFO established an endowment to honor outgoing principal Barbara Lockwood and her husband, John, for all they have done for their school. Our SFCS School Board members came together this spring to recognize outgoing Superintendent Tom Lorang for his service by establishing the Dr. Tom Lorang Teachers' Endowment. What an amazing legacy! When a donor or group chooses to establish an endowment through the Foundation, they are not only remembering a loved one or commemorating someone's life, they are also making an impact on future generations of Catholic school students.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Supporting the SFCS Foundation through planned or endowed gifts provides longterm support as a percentage of the yearly earnings help fund our schools and our teacher salaries. As we look forward to the 2014-2015 school year, I hope more of you will consider establishing endowments with the SFCS Foundation. Michelle Katen Executive Director, SFCS Foundation

Dear Friends and Foundation Supporters, We are very fortunate in the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools to have incredible success in terms of faith formation and academic achievements for our students. We have also committed a great deal of resources, particularly in the last few years, to our facilities in order to provide a great learning environment for our kids. However, there is one huge area that has not received the attention it deserves and that is teacher salaries. We can never underestimate the impact of our teachers and staff on the faith-based education of our students. While the SFCS Board has recently taken greater steps to close the gap between SFCS salaries and our metro area competition, the public schools continue to increase salaries at a faster rate. We are fortunate to have been able to attract and retain the teachers we have because the SFCS mission is important to them, but we need to do more. We must do more. As Dr. Lorang met with the members of the Foundation in his final months as our Superintendent, he encouraged us to continue to do more for our teachers. One way to do that is to increase our teachers salaries. I challenge you to join us at the SFCS Foundation to help find solutions and close the gap. Sincerely, 22

Alan Spencer President, SFCS Foundation

Bishop Level

Bishop Paul J. Swain was born in 1943 in Newark, New York as one of eight children. He attended Ohio Northern University and earned a degree in History. He earned a Masters in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Intelligence Officer, including service in Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star. After military service, he earned a law degree from the University of Wisconsin and began practicing law until joining the staff of Wisconsin’s Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus, serving as legal counsel and director of policy. Near the end of his service to the Governor, thoughts of a vocation to the priesthood came to Swain. Since he wasn’t Catholic this seemed unusual, but he took it as a prompting to take his faith more seriously. Private reading and studying and attendance at Mass led to more formal instruction and entrance into the Catholic faith in 1983. This proved not enough to dismiss the thought of priesthood and he began studying at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary, Weston, MA. He completed his Master of Divinity and was ordained as a priest of the Diocese of Madison on May 27, 1988. He served in a number of parishes and was also Assistant to the Bishop, Vice Chancellor, Moderator of the Curia, Vocations Director and Vicar General. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Paul J. Swain as the eighth bishop of Sioux Falls on August 31, 2006 and he was consecrated as Bishop of Sioux Falls on October 26, 2006.

Religious Leader Level

Sr. Kathryn Easley has spent 41 years in education as both a teacher and an administrator. At a time when having religious sisters in the classroom has become rare, we feel blessed that Sr. Kathryn is still a part of our SFCS system, working at O’Gorman High School in the theology department as department chair and overseeing the Christian Service program. Sister spent five years teaching in Nebraska, eight years in other Catholic schools around the state, and 28 years in the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. She also took a one year sabbatical, and served eight years as Prioress of her Benedictine order in Yankton, SD. Sister is also serving at Avera doing governance work. In all of her years in Catholic education, Sr. Kathryn has seen the Catholic schools in Sioux Falls transition from independently operated to a central Catholic school system. She believes this transition was key to the successes we now enjoy. “I can’t say enough about it. We’re all working together now. There is a standard you can expect in our schools. How wonderful to have the whole faith component – a central place to go for growth, for help, for concerns. It’s just a phenomenal model.” Sister remembers the day as principal at Christ the King when she and her pastor were on their own. They had many more administrative responsibilities and challenges. “Being part of a system relieves our pastors of many administrative duties so they can just be pastoral with the kids.” Sister says our kids now receive an even better education because there is consistency for all instruction and a base for spirituality. And there aren’t the inequities from school to school in terms of tuition or teacher salaries that there once was. “In terms of stewardship, it’s a good use of our money.” But for Sr. Kathryn, it’s more than cost savings. “I would say the thing that has touched my heart and soul most is the faith community, the supportive parents, the pastors who come to say Mass here (at O’G) or administer the sacraments. And the students. My life is enriched because of these students. They have servant hearts, filled with compassion and generosity. They really do work to follow the footsteps of Jesus. I just feel grateful and blessed that I can just be a small part of their faith journey. Through the years I have been blessed with hundreds of faith-filled lay people who recognize their work is not just a job but a ministry. I, for one, am proud and honored to be among them.” Members of the Religious

Superintendent Level Dr. Tom Lorang was hired as assistant principal of O'Gorman High School in 1978. The following year he was named O'Gorman's first lay principal. He served as principal until 1991 when he was instrumental in the unification of all of the city's Catholic schools, forming the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. “I have been extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a part of an innovative faith community that responded to the church’s need to form new models to assure quality Catholic school education for so many families for the forseeable future.” Dr. Lorang has overseen many changes and additions within the SFCS, including the opening of a centralized junior high, three new elementary schools, as well as expansion and renovation projects throughout the system, the most notable being the complete transformation and rebuilding of O'Gorman High School. The extremely successful "Building On Excellence" campaign not only raised enough money for new classroom wings, administrative areas and the chapel, but a performing arts center as well, while also raising millions of dollars in endowments for teachers' salaries and tuition assistance. Lorang retired from the SFCS on June 30, 2014. We wish him only the best in his retirement and thank him for saying yes to God's call to serve as an administrator in our schools for the past 36 years. Principal Level Katie Kerkvliet earned her degree in elementary education from Minnesota State Mankato in 2001 and her Masters in curriculum instruction/ educational leadership in 2005. She started teaching in 2001 in Colorado at the elementary level. While there, she also worked as a mentor teacher/ instructional coach. In 2007, Katie and her family moved to Sioux Falls and spent two years teaching in the Hamlin school district. In 2009, she was hired to be principal at the new St. Katharine Drexel elementary. Her Catholic school experience did not begin at SKD, however. Her dad was a Catholic school principal and Katie attended a Catholic high school in LeMars, IA. “I had that Catholic school experience and I loved it. When I heard of the position at St. Katharine Drexel, I thought back on my days in a Catholic high school and it really appealed to me to be in a faith-based educational setting again.” Katie says she loves many things about being a part of Catholic school. “I love the vibrant families that are so involved. I love being in the classroom and seeing the students’ energy and what they are doing. I love the very committed teachers. I have always been big on helping teachers have everything they need to be the best they can be.” Her days as a principal are over for now, though, as Katie has decided to take a step back from being an administrator and go back into the classroom. Recent health issues and a young, active family are two of the main reasons she’ll be leaving St. Katharine and heading to O’Gorman to teach in the Academic Services department. She’ll be working with small groups of kids who need a little extra help. “My heart has always been in the classroom. I’m excited to meet the students where they are at and help them succeed. I’m also glad that I’ll have a little more balance in my life and be able to take care of myself and my family.” And she is very happy that she and her family will remain a part of SFCS. “I was impressed with SFCS right from the start and continue to be amazed by the quality, commitment and generosity of the families and staff. There’s no other place I’d rather be or have my kids than in our schools.”

Sometimes you can be in a job for many years and yet you feel that there is something that's missing. That’s the way Teri Nagel felt at her old job teaching preschool at a local business. Although she’d been there for 15 years, she knew it wasn’t exactly what she wanted. “I wanted to be able to talk about my faith and help the kids learn about Jesus and how special they are,” says Teri. So she left her good job for an even better one as the preschool teacher at St. Michael’s. “The kids all know a little bit about Jesus from their parents, but I get to extend that and tell them how special Jesus thinks they are, how special they are in God’s eyes and in the eyes of their parents.” Teri says she works to help her young students know that whenever they face conflict, even if it’s something as simple as someone who won’t share crayons or a toy, that they should consider what Jesus would want them to do in that situation, a skill she hopes they will use throughout their lives. And even though these students are very young, she says they give her special insights to life. “Their prayers make you look at your whole life in a new way, with a greater simplicity.” Teri says she loves how her students soak in all the new information they are learning each day and appreciates how loving and forgiving they are. “We end every day with a hug. I try to tell each one of them one positive thing they did so they all leave on a happy note.” And who wouldn’t want to end every work day with 25 hugs from beautiful little children?

Jim Fergen, '65, was in the very first class to have attended all four years at O'Gorman, since the school opened in the fall of 1961. One of the many things Jim was passionate about was music. Jim and and his twin brother, Joe, won the first ever talent contest at O'Gorman playing a duet on piano. The twins went on to learn guitar and Fr. Thury taught them how to sing in harmony. Music became a big part of their lives. Jim and Joe were a part of several bands during high school, starting with the Kingsmen. At SDSU, Jim earned his electrical engineering degree and began a lifelong career at 3M. Although he never lived in Sioux Falls after leaving for college, Joe says his brother fondly remembered his days at O'Gorman. "It was always in his heart." Sadly, Jim died in 2010 of esophageal cancer, but before he died, he made certain that O'Gorman was included in his estate plan. Joe doesn't remember ever discussing with Jim why he chose the various charities he did to be beneficiaries upon his death, but Joe wasn't surprised that O'Gorman was one of them. "I think he came away from O'Gorman having learned a lot from the teachers. He just had a really good experience there," says Joe. As the Building On Excellence campaign was winding down, funding for the final renovations in the band and chorus rooms had stalled. There was still much to be done, but not enough money to do it.... until Jim's estate gift came in! This special gift made it possible for the work to be completed - including air conditioning, lighting, flooring, ceiling tiles and more. These rooms were the last classrooms in the school to be updated from when it was originally built. How fitting that the music department benefitted from Jim's gift. The additional dollars from his estate are being used to establish the James E. Fergen Tuition Assistance Endowment to help students at O’Gorman. Joe says his parents would have appreciated that because of the sacrifices they made to send their children there. "I think Jim would be very proud to see what was accomplished with the funds. He worked very hard throughout his life. He was not a person that was overcome by 'toys' - he lived a kind of spartan life. This would make him very happy that so many kids will benefit from his gift." It was nearly 20 years ago when the first of Gary and Theresa Gaspar’s sons started in the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. And for most of those years, Gary and Theresa have been involved as volunteers in a wide variety of areas. Theresa was an active classroom volunteer in her children’s classrooms, in the school lunch room, on the SFO committee, working at the Fall Festival and other fundraising events. When her oldest son moved on to O’Gorman Junior High, Theresa brought her skills there to the study center where, for five years, she helped tutor students. Gary used his business skills to help the SFCS by serving on committees including the Finance Committee, Personnel Board and the SFCS School Board. He served as President of the School Board for one year and when his successor had to move away before the school year began, was asked to remain in that role for an additional year. He has served as President of the SFCS Foundation, on the Executive Committee and he remains on the Investment Committee. In addition, he has spent 18 years in the classroom as a Junior Achievement volunteer. All of this volunteering doesn’t happen by accident. It was a conscious effort by the Gaspars to be truly “invested” in their children’s education. “The school system was so good for our kids, both academically and with our faith,” says Theresa. “If our kids are involved, we like to be involved. It was just a really great place for them.” Andrew Gaspar graduated in 2010, and James graduated in 2012. Both did very well academically and earned amazing college scholarships as a result. Gary and Theresa feel that the investment, both in terms of their time and the tuition they paid, was worth it. “When you look at the faith formation,” says Gary, “this is the most effective way to pass on our faith. It’s our Catholic faith being constantly reinforced with Christian values.” Gary says that the tools SFCS works to give students is vital to their success. “It helps create good people. And that’s not arrogance. Our students understand the importance of how to treat others and live the right way.” Gary feels that O’Gorman was great for his boys because of the many opportunities for all students to find happiness and success at whatever interests them. “It’s a place for everybody, no matter what they’re involved in – all of those talents are valued here.” Although their boys are now both graduated, the Gaspars say their involvement will continue. “There’s such a great feeling of community and it feels good to be a part of it,” says Theresa. Gary says it’s important to give back. “We believe in the mission. We want to give back to support the mission in any way we can.” Gary and Theresa, we appreciate all you have done over the past two decades and know our schools are better because of your family! If all of this isn’t enough, you should see her academic schedule. With a goal to go become an OB/GYN doctor, Christina established a rigorous schedule of classes, including doubling up on math classes during her sophomore year and science courses her junior year. What this bright, articulate, soon-to-be-senior loves most about O’Gorman is the opportunities to grow in her faith. “You have the option to go to chapel over the lunch hour and I love that. It’s so nice to be able to go down there and pray.” Christina says she’s really looking forward to being a senior. “I want to make sure everyone feels included. I want them (underclassmen) to know if they need anything or have any questions, they can come to me.” Christina says the faith formation and education she is receiving in the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools are exactly what her parents hoped for when she transferred from public schools when she was young. “They asked me once if I wanted to keep going to the Catholic Schools and there was never any question for me.” Members of the Student Level are honored for their cumulative gifts to the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools since 1987 of $10,000 - $24,999.

FY 2013-14 Investment Funds Total Account Value: $14,353,754* The O’Gorman Foundation Fund was established from the many gifts received through various fund drives to benefit O’Gorman High School prior to the formation of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools system in 1991. These dollars are to be invested and only a limited percentage of the fund is to be disbursed for use at O’Gorman High School. Balance: $1,105,781.

Investment decisions are made using the following investment guidelines:  T he long term investment objective is to achieve a total return equal to or in excess of the sum of the desired spending rate, allowances for inflation, management fees and related costs, and an appropriate growth factor.  T he target asset allocations for the investment portfolio are set forth in the table below.  T o maintain the proper allocation, it is the policy of the Foundation to periodically rebalance the portfolio in the event any asset class allocation differs by more than 20% of the stated target.

The Teachers’ Endowment Fund was established through a capital campaign drive in 1991, allocating the first $500,000 from the drive toward an endowment to benefit Sioux Falls Catholic Schools teachers’ salaries. Only a limited percentage from this fund is disbursed. Balance: $547,587.

 A Spending Rate not to exceed 4% of the investment portfolio’s market value each year is appropriate to meet the needs of SFCS. The rate is reviewed periodically in light of evolving trends within the economy.

The Pooled Funds are defined as those funds established by donors which provide permanent support of the mission of SFCS, whether in the form of teacher compensation, tuition assistance, scholarships, programs, capital improvements or other support. Unless otherwise stipulated by the donor, only a limited percentage from these funds is disbursed. Balance: $6,576,881.

 All fixed income securities will be of investment grade.

A Vibrant Vision for Catholic Education in Sioux Falls

Canfield and several other businessmen, along with Sioux Falls pastors Father Don Kettler and Father Robert Flannery, met weekly for a full year with then-O’Gorman principal Tom Lorang to discuss the options, the challenges and solutions. They eventually presen ted their plan to Bishop Dudley who, this time, gave his approval to move forward and allow the creation of the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools system. Canfield served on the very first SFCS School Board as its President. He remembers what a “There is so much leader Lorang was throughout the entire process. long-term value. “Tom’s organizational skills and training was a godsend to us. He created a ‘beyond you’ culture – by fearlessly and selflessly empowering the people around him.” Under Lorang’s leadership, the committee wrote a clear mission for the new system and established

a vision. “It became an evangelization of our faith." Recently, when Lorang announced his retirement, Canfield wanted to find a lasting way to say thank you to Lorang for his service to our schools. He visited with Michelle Katen, Director of the SFCS Foundation, with a goal to get every former SFCS Board member to contribute to an endowment created to honor Lorang. The idea took off and at Lorang’s retirement open house, Canfield and other current and former Board members presented a check for $75,000 to him for the endowment. Canfield told a stunned Lorang in front of the crowd, “We have all been blessed by your commitment to Catholic education and your capacity to translate a game changer vision into a reality. It is through your humility and desire to serve that you have inspired an entire school system to achieve national recognition through a Catholic way of life based on our Gospel values.” Lorang was overwhelmed by the incredible gesture. Combined with gifts from other friends and supporters, the fund is now up to about $95,000. Canfield is particularly pleased that the fund will benefit teacher salaries. “That’s so appropriate. The cornerstone to any successful educational system is the faculty and staff that interact with our children on a daily basis.” Looking back, Canfield says creating this Catholic school system was the best thing that could have happened. “There is so much huge, long-term value. Generations will benefit from this. What a wonderful gift to them.” If you’d like to contribute to the Dr. Tom Lorang Teachers’ Endowment, you may send gifts to the SFCS Foundation, 3100 W. 41st St, Sioux Falls, SD 57105

It was back in about 1980 that the first discussion took place about having a centralized Catholic school system in Sioux Falls. There were many challenges for the schools, which all operated independently, and great concerns for the long-term stability. In his wisdom, thenBishop Paul Dudley knew the timing wasn’t right and ended the talks. Fast forward about ten years and the discussion resurfaced with a greater sense of urgency. “We knew we had to do something,” says Larry Canfield. “We were so fragmented. We had moved away from religious and as the town expanded, we knew there were schools that wouldn’t make it.” There weren't any models to follow. Only a handful of Catholic school systems even existed in the nation at that time. They would have to craft their own.
