FROM OUR BOARD LEADERS From its very beginning, WCBR has aspired to be a place for retirees to live and thrive, to enjoy friendships, to find intellectual and cultural stimulation and to gain peace of mind for themselves and their families, knowing they would be cared for no matter the need. We have always sought to foster compassion for one another, residents, staff and trustees alike. Through the years, those who have passed through WCBR’s doors have each contributed in some way to create this special place, this compassionate community. Having reached the milestone of twenty-five years since our founding, we reflect on the fact that well over a thousand men and women have called our community home, and each has left their mark on our character. This rich collection of gifts, whether of time, talent, treasure or simply a kind word, creates the face of today’s WCBR. We look forward to exploring opportunities to strengthen the fabric of this community and deepen its worth. It’s an important part of who we are today and who we were twenty-five years ago. Sincerely,

“We thank the day our parents moved into their apartment at WCBR, thereby assuring their safety and care for the rest of their days.” —WCBR Family Member

Nick Carter WCBR Board Chair

“I want to thankWCBR for the many happy years my dad was an active, involved resident and for the compassion and skill of the Health Care staff when he needed their care.”

Reflections from Rick Richmond, Retired Trustee “It has been my great privilege and pleasure to have been a part of the WCBR family for so many years and especially to see a dream become a living reality.” Rick recently concluded his third term on the Foundation Board, the last chapter of his long service to WCBR, which has spanned thirty years. Rick was part of the original steering committee in 1984, a member of the Founding Board of Directors in 1985, and the Chairman of the Board at our opening in 1990. In reflecting on the Westminster-Canterbury of today, Rick says, “It’s not the bricks and mortar that makes this community, it’s the residents that make this community, and I give them credit for making us the success that we are today.”

OUR MISSION

Benefiting the Charlottesville/ Albemarle Community

The WCBR Foundation gathers private support for WCBR’s charitable activities including the Fellowship Program, which provides confidential assistance to residents in need. The WCBR mission is to meet the dynamic needs of aging by providing high quality services, programs, and residential environments through a faith-based organization fostered by the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches.

Fellowship

The Fellowship Program offers peace of mind. We are proud to say that no one has ever had to leave WCBR due to lack of financial resources. In existence since WCBR opened its doors in 1990, our Fellowship Program has given over $5 million in confidential financial assistance to qualified current and prospective residents who cannot fully meet the cost of entrance and/or monthly fees, health care, and other living expenses.

Associates Education and Emergency Assistance

Qualifying associates can receive tuition assistance to further their education. Since 2008, nearly 100 scholarships have been granted. When unexpected financial obstacles cause extreme hardship, associates meeting eligibility requirements may be granted funds to help them get back on their feet.

“We want to thank the Fellowship Program as it gave my dad the ability to spend his last years receiving the health care staff’s skilled and compassionate care in the same place where he had lived many years as a healthy, active resident. The Fellowship Program is such a generous resource!”

Meet Bridget Price A native Virginian, Bridget Price hails from Louisa, where she still resides with her two sons. Bridget began her very first Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) job at WCBR after graduating from the PVCC Certification Program in 1995. She began working on the 3rd floor in the Health Center, and then became a floater on all the HC Units while also filling in at the Clinic. Bridget became a Registered Medication Aide (Med Tech) in 2000 and joined the Clinic team full time. Bridget’s desire to provide excellent support to the Clinic nurses and to be ready for any situation that may arise has motivated her to continue her education. With the help of the Foundation’s Associate Education Program, Bridget recently finished a Medical Assistants Program and will take the Phlebotomy Technician Program at PVCC this spring. Twenty-one years later she still enjoys her work, residents, and friends at WCBR. She says, “It’s my home away from home.” 4

BUILDING COMMUNITY IN CHARLOTTESVILLE/ALBEMARLE WCBR residents and associates work to make our community better in numerous ways. In FY15, WCBR was there with toys for needy kids at Christmas time, meeting space for nonprofit groups all across the region, and furniture and appliances for folks in need. Through partnerships with local educational institutions, WCBR helped train future nurses and CNAs for our region. We are proud to be a part of this wonderful community!

Meet John and Eleanor Knox John and Eleanor Knox moved into their WCBR cottage in 2004 and quickly immersed themselves in the life of their new community. Daughter Molly said, “Mom and Dad moved to Westminster Canterbury for comfort and security, but it became much more. Westminster-Canterbury became a community, a family, a home. WCBR enriched the final years of their lives in ways they could not have foretold.” During their lifetime John and Eleanor were steadfast supporters of the Foundation. John was serving as a Trustee at the time of his death. In 2011 John and Eleanor set up a charitable gift annuity with WCBR a beneficiary. This not only provided them a stream of income, it generated a generous gift for the Foundation following their deaths. And, both assured continuing support of WCBR by remembering the Foundation in their wills. The legacy of their love for WCBR, its staff, and residents, will last a long time. 6

BLUE RIDGE ATTIC Thanks to the thoughtfulness of residents downsizing or upgrading our little re-sale shop is usually jammed with a wonderful variety of high quality household items. Associates are the only ones who can shop at the Attic, and the proceeds go directly to the Foundation’s two programs benefitting associates: the Education and Emergency Assistance programs. This would not happen without our hard-working Resident volunteers and the support of our Facilities Team and Residents Helping Residents. 12
