t is impossible to measure the success of an arts organization through a single lens, as many different factors contribute to a healthy museum. This truth applies to us at the National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM). As you read this 2016 Annual Report, you will see a variety of contributors to our success reflected in its pages. The common theme to all of them is our mission: to preserve, promote, and share the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. As 2016 progressed, NSLM fulfilled this mission in a variety of ways. Our staff continued its efforts to preserve our collections, with major initiatives proceeding throughout the organization. Our collections make NSLM truly unique, and projects to facilitate easier access to a worldwide audience were a primary focus for us. This year, we saw fantastic growth of our audience with over 10,000 visits to our campus in Middleburg and almost 20,000 visits to our website. As our audience grows, so does our geographic reach: visitors from more than 80 countries read the NSLM’s blog in the past year. A major draw for visitors to NSLM this year was our outstanding exhibitions in the Museum. In early 2016, visitors were treated to highlights of every major movement in French art from Romanticism to Fauvism in The French Horse From Géricault to Picasso: Works from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Our fall loan exhibition explored themes much closer to home in The Chronicle of the Horse in Art. The exhibition brought together a blend of classic and contemporary sporting art featured on the covers of The Chronicle of the Horse for almost seventy years. Another measure of success for NSLM is our community. We are fortunate to have tremendous support from enthusiasts united in their love of sport, as well as friends locally and regionally. We were challenged by the weather this year, from a blizzard that dumped 40 inches of snow on our campus, to the disruption of our Carriage Day event by extreme heat, and culminating in a violent hailstorm the day before our June Open Late concert. Through these trials, our friends and neighbors have been a source of strength to our organization. In 2016, NSLM was presented with great challenges and great opportunities. Throughout the year, our organization continued to grow with the assistance of the thousands of wonderful individuals who make up our membership, our community, and our audience. We thank you for all of your support and look forward to even more successes in 2017.

LECTURES & ROUNDTABLES

CARRIAGE DAY

NSLM’s new Cofee with the Curator program offers attendees a “fi rst-look” tour of a recently opened exhibition led by a visiting curator or exhibiting artist. This year’s visiting curators included research Fellow Jennifer Strotz and guest curator Mitchell Merling of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Research Fellows who have studied at NSLM were invited back to speak at our Sporting Conversations lecture series, which covers diverse topics such as historic equine nutrition, wingshooting, hunt poetry, and others. Other educational programs included a book signing with George Morris and a roundtable on women in racing.

On July 23, NSLM displayed 16 carriages of all shapes and sizes across the lawn for our free community event, Carriage Day. NSLM partnered with Colonial Williamsburg, the Piedmont Driving Club, and the MARE Center to make this event our highest attended educational program to date. A Carriage Day post was also featured on Colonial Williamsburg’s blog, Making History.

FREE PUBLIC PROGRAMMING

Educational programming is essential to NSLM’s goal to bring visitors of all ages and backgrounds to the Library & Museum. Each month NSLM hosts a free drawing session, Sunday Sketch, in which a local artist teaches artistic techniques found in the artwork on view in the Museum. This year, NSLM introduced complimentary afternoon tours, Gallery Talks, to our free Wednesday programming.

SCHOOL TOURS & SUMMER CAMP

In addition to K-12 tours, in 2016 NSLM presented its fi rstever kids camp, Undercover Curator. The day camp allowed children unique access to the art in NSLM’s collection, with the goal of uncovering the art collections’ secrets and recreating them.

OPEN LATE CONCERT SERIES Over 980 visitors attended our Open Late concerts in 2016 and the series has been greeted with enthusiasm in the Middleburg community. A violent hail storm in June didn’t dampen spirits, and the concert was still held the next day at the NSLM campus. 6TH ANNUAL POLO CLASSIC The National Sporting Library & Museum’s Polo Classic was held on Sunday, September 11 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. More than 800 guests attended two matches which featured top polo players from the region and from afar. Celebrity players such as Nacho Figueras and John Walsh brought heightened interest to the Classic. Proceeds from this event enabled the NSLM to offer 76 free public programs, host eight art exhibitions, and welcome more than 10,000 visitors.

LIBRARY SERVICES

PHYSICAL ENHANCEMENTS

CATALOGING PROJECTS

PLANNING AND PRESERVATION

In the spring, the Library added a front desk to the Library foyer to enhance visitor service. A cart to sell duplicate books was added in the foyer at the same time. The Library sold 439 duplicate books after the installation of the cart. A room on the Library Lower Level was converted to an Archives Room and cabinets were installed to house archival collections. The Archives Room will serve as a silent study area.

This year, 2,381 researchers visited the Library to access its collections, making 2016 a record for highest Library visitation. This number counts visitors accessing the Library’s collections only; it does not count visitors to programs or events. NSLM’s Librarians answered 454 reference and research questions in person, by telephone, and by e-mail. The NSLM filled 110 book loans through the Interlibrary Loan system to 33 states across the country.

In April, the Library department welcomed Erica Libhart as the Mars Librarian, a new role dedicated to library technical services and collection maintenance. The expansion of staff to include a second Librarian made a tremendous impact on NSLM’s ability to provide maintenance for a growing collection. Foremost among Library projects has been the ongoing reprocessing project, which will make collections significantly more findable to Library users. This year 6,568 volumes in the Main Reading Room were cataloged, labeled, and barcoded. The Main Reading Room portion of this project will end in mid-2017, with Rare Book Room collections slated to begin immediately thereafter.

As the Library continues to face challenges with dwindling space, NSLM has adopted a formal Collection Management Policy to help approach retention in an informed and systematic way. The Library received over 20,000 volumes in donations this year, and the policy was a necessary tool to ensure the collection grows in a sustainable fashion. In November 2016, the Library launched its inaugural Book Adoption Program. The program makes distressed or damaged books available for sponsoring for restoration and repair. Of the 19 titles made included in the program, 18 were adopted and sent for restoration. The program will return in November 2017.

ANNUAL AUCTION The NSLM’s collections are a direct reflection of the sporting community. Every year, the Library receives hundreds of volumes of donated books, periodicals, and other materials. Many of these materials are duplicates of objects in the Library collection. When a duplicate is received, the one in better condition is retained and the extra copy is sold. All proceeds from the sale of duplicate books go to the care and maintenance of the Library’s collections. Each year, the Library makes a selection of highquality duplicates available for purchase to NSLM members through the Annual Auction. In 2016, the NSLM is grateful to donor Childs Burden for donating a selection of sporting prints as additions to the Annual Auction.

“Warburg is a distinctive name, and one that has lots of meaning for us at NSLM. In 2008, Mrs. Felicia Warburg Rogan made a signifi cant donation of sporting art to us, and the paintings by John Emms and Sir Alfred Munnings in that donation are a major part of the Museum experience. But was there a connection? With the help of online genealogical resources, a Christmastime investigation was afoot! Our fi rst research sweep found a major local connection: our newest corporate sponsor, Goodstone Inn & Restaurant.” Read this and other posts dating back to December of 2014 at NationalSporting.org and clicking on the “Blog” tab.

LINE DANCE - THE ART OF FLY FISHING BY PETER CORBIN January 30, 2016 - July 3, 2016 A selection of fi fteen large paintings created between 1978 and 2016 were on loan to Line Dance - The Art of Fly Fishing by Peter Corbin from collectors of the artist’s work. Corbin’s primary artistic influences are sporting artists Ogden Pleissner, A.B. Frost, and the renowned Winslow Homer. It is worthy of note, however, that Corbin considers himself a landscape painter, fi rst, and the sporting subject matter

he depicts as part of the scene. The paintings in the exhibition revealed the beauty and diversity of prime fresh and saltwater fly fi shing areas in North America, from the grandeur of the mountains out West in Morning on the Gallatin, 2011; to the hallowed space in Evening Rise, 2008; and the rocky shoreline of Martha’s Vineyard in Evening in Lobsterville, 2006.

To the Finish: The Art & Process of Greg Montgomery July 29, 2016 - November 27, 2016 To the Finish: The Art & Process of Greg Montgomery delved into the artist’s creative process. The show of thirtyfi ve fi ne art prints and preparatory materials featured Montgomery’s early serigraphs (silkscreen prints), drawings, and cut-paper studies as well as giclées. Montgomery says of his process, “When beginning a drawing or illustration, it is the composition of a scene that catches my eye. I see

the shapes, the darks and lights, the colors and balance or tensions within the scene. I seek to simplify what I see into flat solid shapes of color with hard edges and high contrast, creating strong focal points and aligning elements within the artwork to focus your view.” This exhibit was sponsored by NSLM Vice Chairman of the Board Mrs. Jacqueline B. Mars and David E. Greenhill.

Many advances and improvements to NSLM’s facilities were made in 2016. We started with several painting projects, and then all concrete mechanical room floors were cleaned, etched, and painted to maintain cleanliness. The Lower Level of the Library was painted a lighter color to compliment planned shelving additions. Facilities staff worked tirelessly to maintain the operations, events, exhibits, and improvements during a storm-fi lled year. A January blizzard dumped more than 40 inches of snow on the NSLM campus, with drifts as high as ten feet. Snow removal from drives and sidewalks, windows, vents, airways, roof/floor drains, hydrants, and campus boxwoods presented major logistical challenges. More challenges were encountered in May, with severe weather that led to flooding which damaged sensors in multiple locations, a tractor trailer knocking down the campus stone wall along The Plains Road, and a traffi c accident destroying a large cedar tree on Washington Street. Shortly thereafter, with the campus landscaping at peak bloom, a June hail storm struck Middleburg. The storm brought 2 ½ inch hailstones, which damaged staff property, roofs on all NSLM buildings, and all landscaping. Thankfully, the damaging cycle ended in mid-summer and NSLM continued to offer events, exhibits, and library research. The Town of Middleburg replaced water mains down the center of town, replaced street lights, improved cross walks, and added fi nal paving. This greatly improved the entry to NSLM at the Vine Hill stone staircase. The Carriage Day event at NSLM was fantastic, and facilities staff helped with unloading, set up, security, and loading out. Facilities staff was instrumental in the success of the monthly Open Late concert series and the annual Polo Classic at Great Meadow. The NSLM’s hail storm restoration project started on November 1. worked through all the details and completed 80 percent of the projects in 2016, with the final 20 percent planned for completion in March 2017. Many other facilities projects were completed in 2016. Four outdated Library humidifiers were replaced with new, updated units for a return to consistent performance. An 18-year-old hot water heater was also replaced along with additional utilities. Improvements have been numerous and diverse, with capital long-term improvements related to new roofs, gutters, downspouts, flashing, caps, seven new windows, wood repair, and total repaint outside on all buildings. Five heating and air conditioning units at the Chronicle of the Horse building on the NSLM campus were also replaced. After such a busy year, the Facilities Department is prepared for the coming year which includes a similar scope for projects and maintenance to what was experienced in 2016. We are looking forward to making many more improvements in 2017.

* Per exhibition loan agreement, NSLM did not charge Museum admission from May 6 through July 31, 2016 in conjunction with The French Horse from Géricault to Picasso: Works from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. While admission income represented a higher percentage of NSLM revenues in 2015, ofering a period of free admission during the high-trafic summer months accounted for a lower percentage in 2016. ** Special projects, programs, and events through the Library and Education departments were funded through generous donors or sponsors in 2016. While these expenses are not relected in NSLM’s annual financial summary, we are grateful to our donors who enabled us to fulfill our mission without impact to our operating budget.
