2017 Blair School Summer Reading An International Baccalaureate Incoming 7th grade - DLIP Due Monday, August 21st

Required Reading:  The Lions of Little Rock (English edition) by Kristin Levine (fiction) AR 4.1, 10 points  Antes de ser libres (Spanish Edition) by Julia Alvarez AR pending AR 5.6, 8 points Novels are available for purchase during the Vroman’s/Blair Book Fair the week of May 8th. DIRECTIONS for The Lions of Little Rock Activity: Write a 750-1000 word synopsis. A synopsis is a brief statement giving a general view of some subject, book, etc.; a summary. Follow this format for your synopsis. Each paragraph should be well written and show that you clearly understand the novel. Paragraph 1: 1. Is the setting of the story important? 2. Introduce the protagonist. 3. What is the protagonist’s background? 4. What is he/she like? 5. What is the major conflict? (Think about the big picture, the conflict may not be the most obvious concern or need presented.) 6. How is the protagonist involved in the conflict? Paragraph 2: 1. Who is the antagonist in the book? (be careful… the antagonist might not be a person) 2. How is the antagonist involved in the conflict? 3. What motivates the antagonist? Paragraph 3: 1. What are some seminal (influential, key, important) scenes in the novel? Describe them. 2. How is the conflict resolved? Is the conflict resolved? Explain either way. Paragraph 4: 1. Theme: How were you personally inspired or changed by reading this book? Give details. 2. Why should someone read this book?

Dobla un papel alineado a lo largo y haz una línea por en medio. En la parte izquierda escribe una cita importante e incluye el número de página. En la parte a la derecha, escribe tu respuesta a la cita. Explica por qué te impactó y que crees que pasará próximamente. Además, incluye una conexión personal a la cita: ¿Cómo te relacionas con el acontecimiento de la cita en cuanto al tema, un personaje, o escenario? Tu respuesta a la cita debe ser de por lo menos tres párrafos.

Análisis de personaje: Escoge a dos personajes importantes y haz una análisis de por lo menos dos párrafos. Enfócate en la información de fondo del personaje, las acciones importantes tomadas por el personaje y como otros personajes de libro los ven. Actividad de ilustración: Tu trabajo deberá estar organizado y guardado en una carpeta o en papel grueso. Como actividad de arte deberás crear una portada para tu trabajo. En esta portada harás un dibujo que capture una de las ideas principales del libro. Deberá incluir el título, la autora, y la traductora. Common Core Standards Addressed in this Assignment: Reading Standards for Literature: 1 - Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. 2 - Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot). Writing Standards: 1- Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. 2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. ASSIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS:      



The Summer Reading Project is due Monday, August 21, 2017 This is a required assignment for your 7th grade English language arts class and your 7th grade Spanish language arts class This is not an extra credit assignment An in-class essay will be given after the due date to measure your understanding of the novels; this essay will require you to incorporate both required texts from this assignment. An Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz will be given on each book. The scores will count as test grades. Those students registered during the summer months and/or are new to Blair are still required to complete this assignment by the given date. The teacher may make additional provisions to this policy if the student entered school after the first day; however, this assignment is still mandatory This assignment will count as 20% of the first 5-week grading period
