The Spread of Christianity into Samaria

Saint Lawrence Parking Lot Solar Project Due to the ongoing construction for the Solar Project here at St. Lawrence, portions of the parking lot will be not accessible. Additional parking is available on the blacktop area between the Elementary and Middle School buildings, as well as the parking across the street at the School District lot.

Liturgy Corner by: Deborah Ferry

(taken from Commentary On Today’s First Reading) Today’s story from Acts is remarkable because it demonstrates how the Church grew beyond Jerusalem to Samaritan lands. Preaching to the Samaritans was not a goal of the Apostles. Rather, because Christians were being persecuted in Jerusalem, some of the new believers scattered and began evangelizing elsewhere (see Acts 8:1). Among those who fled was Philip, one of the seven Hellenists who had been selected as a leader for that community (see last Sunday’s reading from Acts). Philip not only “proclaimed the Christ” to the Samaritans, but added authority to his words by “the signs [exorcisms and healings] he was doing. Luke then tells us that upon hearing that “Samaria had accepted the word of God,” the apostles sent Peter and John to the new converts. Although they had been baptized, it was only after these representatives of the apostles “laid hands on them” that the Samaritans “received the Holy Spirit.” This description of the reception of the Spirit occurring at a time separate from a baptism in Jesus’ name appears several times in Acts, though it is not the rule. (For example, the two acts happen simultaneously in Acts 1:5, 11:16.) On occasion, the coming of the Spirit is pictured as occurring after baptism (today’s reading and Acts 19:1-6), and, on other occasions, before (Acts 10:44-48). Luke’s purpose seems to be to emphasize that under the guidance of the Spirit, new understandings and new growth occurred in such a way that unity with the apostolic witness and tradition (represented by the apostles or the twelve) was maintained. Notice the final two lines emphasize “Then they [Peter and John] laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.”

This project was approved by our Parish Finance Council as part of the Diocesan Solar Initiative for Parishioners to avoid full increases in electrical power rates over the years. We ask your patience during this time of this project construction here at St. Lawrence. Thank you, Fr. Ernesto M. Orci Pastor
