Dear Chamber Members, May the Bash be with You September is my favorite month of the year as the 32nd Annual Bois d’Arc Bash is finally here. This year’s Bash is slated to be the best one yet with a bigger carnival than years past, more vendors, and more great music taking the downtown stage. If you enjoyed the music at the July 4th celebration, you’ll really enjoy the Bash as Twisted Whisky is returning to perform for us again along with Nevermind and headliner Zane Williams as well as all of our tried and true favorites playing throughout the day. Fridays events will include the annual Golf Tourney held at Sand Hills Country Club followed by the CLI barbeque fundraiser on the square. We’ll have a Friday night street dance with entertainment by Steel Drum Band, Cross Trails Church Band, and the Jacoby Smith Band will headline. Our annual Miss Bois d’Arc Pageant will take place 2 weeks before the Bash on September 9th at the First Baptist Church. The Bash Parade will be at 10:00 on Saturday morning lead by our Grand Marshal, Angela Roberts. If you love the Bash as much as I do, we’d love to have you join us as a vendor, sponsor, participant, and or volunteer. Information is available on the website at www. http://boisdarc-bash.com or you can follow the Bash Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/boisdarcbash. We look forward to spending our Bash with You! Dr. Shanan Gwaltney Gibson Named Dean of College of Business By Scott Cason Dr. Shanan Gwaltney Gibson has been named Dean of College of Business at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Gibson joins the university’s academic leadership team after service as the Associate Dean for Student & Faculty Development at East Carolina University, where she was responsible for directing the university’s undergraduate programs, graduate programs, and the Center for Student Success. A&M-Commerce Provost Dr. John Humphreys said of the appointment: “We believe Dr. Gibson is the right person to lead our world-class business school in providing opportunities for our students to transform their lives. Also, as a member of the university academic leadership team, she will play an integral role in shaping the direction of academic affairs more broadly on our campus.” Gibson held several academic leadership roles at East Carolina University over the course of her 16-year career with the institution, including service as chair and a member of the University Budget Committee, a member of the Sedona Replacement Executive Committee, a member of the Office of Faculty Excellence Advisory Council, and the Graduate Programs to Serve Military Population Committee. She also served as a leader in the local community as a faculty advisor for Campus Civitan since 2014. Gibson served as an appointed member of the federal Social Security Administration’s Occupational Information Advisory Panel for four years where she provided advice and recommendations that would enable SSA to develop an occupational information system suited to its disability programs and improve the medical-vocational adjudication policies and processes. She has authored/co-authored in excess of 35 peer-reviewed journal articles and was an editor and author of The Handbook of Work Analysis in Organizations: Methods, Systems, Applications, & Science of Work. Shanan is a past president of SEDSI, SEINFORMS, and has held multiple positions on the board of the Small Business Institute®; she was also coeditor of the Small Business Institute Journal® for three years. Shanan has provided human resources-related consulting to State Farm Insurance agencies across the mid-Atlantic and is currently active in multiple AACSB groups including the Women Administrators in Management Education interest group. “I am delighted and honored to serve as the new dean of the College of Business,” Dr. Gibson said. “I saw a passion for student success and academic excellence that aligned with my values and I am excited to join the team of outstanding professionals that consider Texas A&M University-Commerce their home. I look forward to partnering with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the business community to provide a superior business education, one that transforms the lives of our students and positively impacts our business community.” Dr. Gibson and her husband, Dr. Jim Gibson (LtCol, USMC), plan to settle in Commerce with their ridiculously spoiled dogs, Calculus and DiffyQ.

Dr. Cheri Davis and Dr. Matt A. Wood are CoPI's on the project. “After working almost three years on the proposal, we are excited about the opportunities this grant will bring to our students and its potential impacts on the physics program at TAMU-Commerce,” said Dr. Li. Students majoring in Physics at A&M-Commerce may be eligible to receive up to $7,800 per year for up to three years, plus $500 per year to travel to present research results at scientific meetings. retention and graduation of physics majors and provide innovative support for them to enter top graduate schools in physical sciences or find rewarding jobs in a field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The gathered knowledge on how to address complex issues of providing student support for the targeted populations gathered has tremendous implications for other rural institutions attempting to increase the retention and graduation of physics majors through both financial and other innovative support strategies. The PASS project will also help meet the broadly recognized national need for more high-quality physics majors. “We are very excited to be able to offer these NSF scholarship and research opportunities to our students. Physics graduates are extremely competitive in the job market, as they’re qualified for all manner of technical jobs, and we’re working to substantially increase the number of top physics graduates in the northeast Texas region,” said Dr. Wood, Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

A&M-Commerce focuses on students transferring from 23 regional community colleges serving high percentages of underrepresented minorities. The PASS project will implement new strategies for increasing recruitment,

Tech Titans Names Texas A&M University-Commerce a finalist for the Tech Titans of the Future – University Level Award By Jasmine Baker Tech Titans, the largest technology trade organization in Texas, has named Dr. Robynne Lock and A&M-Commerce’s Studio Physics program a finalist in the Tech Titans of the Future – University Level Award category as part of the 17th Annual Tech Titans Awards. "I am honored to be a finalist for a Tech Titans award. Studio physics is a student-centered active-learning environment in which students spend the majority of class time on group work. Chamber Membership and Commerce Pride

One Gift For A Better Commerce P.O. Box 1321  Commerce, Texas 75429

By Paul Voss I want to thank all the people of Commerce for their support of your Chamber of Commerce. It’s been almost 3 ½ years since I took over the Chamber as Executive Director and this 32 Bois d’Arc Bash is my 4th Bash to oversee. This type of event is hectic, nerve racking, frustrating, time consuming, hard, nail biting, hair pulling, screaming, yelling, relentless, overwhelming, and also rewarding, fun, relaxing , prideful, joyful, pleasing did I mention frustrating. I had no idea 4 years ago what fun and what satisfaction could be derived by working for the Chamber of Commerce could be. I get to help bring joy to Commerce and with the help of a great staff as well as a great Chamber Board of Directors the events we bring seem to fulfill the goal of our charter. First and foremost we are here to promote business and businesses here in Commerce, Texas. We strive to do just that ever day of every week of every year. We are the business community advocate to not only the City Government, the County Government and the State and National Government but to the public. We have a banner in our office that says “This is Our Commerce”. We display this sign at every event and every time we have a Ribbon Cutting or a new business opening. We promote solidarity and prove it with actions to revive downtown, Culver Street, Hwy 24, Live Oak, Park St., Hwy 224 and all the places in Commerce where business dwells. The Chamber of Commerce is over 100 years old in Commerce and I am honored to be the 29th Executive Director. We are encouraging everyone who wishes, to become members of the Chamber. We have a lot of individual members as well as small and large businesses. Our Connection newspaper has a business directory, places to advertise and relevant news stories that come out each month. Our relationships have brought business owners together to share in ideas and common goals. We have helped lease and sell buildings and property as well as give tours of Commerce on a regular basis to promote and extol the virtues of doing business here. Giving back to our community is our pledge and we take that very seriously. Your Chamber of Commerce is to promote Retail, Service Establishments, Manufacturing ,Wholesalers, Construction Firms, Real Estate, Investment, Insurance, Professionals, Farmers , Ranchers, Hotel , Motels, Restaurants, Home Owners, Property Owners as well as Civic and University members. Your Chamber is involved in Governmental Affairs and serves on the Hunt Count Steering Committee for Transportation, The Hunt County Governmental Affairs Committee, I-30 Transportation Committee, Tex-21 Committee, The FISH Board, the Hunt County Economic Affairs Committee and many others that affect business in Commerce. We at the Chamber are involved and want you to be involved. There are many times we need volunteers and you can help us with events and planning. Community Service is a very rewarding effort and we are asking you to help as well. You can reach us at [email protected] or call us at 903 886 3950. Come see us September 22nd and 23rd at the 32 annual Bois d’Arc Bash.

By combining these worthy organizations into one fund drive, we are striving to help our citizens with an efficient way to support each agency. This letter is to invite you to our Annual Kick-off for the 2018 fund raising campaign. Please come celebrate with Commerce Community Cares, enjoy some barbeque, and meet some of these great people that are out there on the ‘front lines’ making Commerce a better place. This celebration will take place at the Ben E. Keith Community Room on Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 6:00 p.m. You will be provided an opportunity to be entertained by Dr. Tim Letzring and enjoy visiting with your friends and neighbors that share your vision of making Commerce better than ever.

Local Church, Chamber, Fire Department and Businesses send help to the Gulf Coast Hurricane Harvey has really called on Southeast Texas in a devastating way this past week. Flood waters have wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi to Beaumont and into Louisiana. Tens of thousands of people have been driven out of their homes and into shelters with little more than the clothes on their backs. Water is in businesses and homes that have never seen flood waters before. Some are saying this is a thousand year flood and 54 inches of rain is the most from any storm in U.S. history. A week later and some areas are still having rising water. The Coast Guard alone has performed over 12,000 rescues. One of the amazing things that have been noted is the amount of people that are bringing their personal boats, canoes, monster trucks or just wading to help flood victims get out of the flood zones. Texans helping Texans as well as from other states, dropping what they were doing and going to the coast just to help. The Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Cross Trails Cowboy Church in providing the victims of the flood with t-shirts, water, toilet items, food and lots of water. Charles Lowrey the Assistant Pastor of Cross Trails and 2 Lay Pastors, Billy Mercer and Kevin Ice loaded up and headed for New Waverly this week to take much needed supplies to the Coast. The Commerce Fire Department is gathering water as well as planning a trip to assist in any way they can to help the stressed departments in the area. Some local pilots who coordinated their efforts with the Salvation Army took sever airplanes from the Commerce Airport to Conroe to distribute Diapers, Formula, Sleeping Bags and Toilet Items on Friday of this week. This catastrophe is going to be an ongoing issue for weeks and months to come and the Chamber is going to stay active in this effort. We will keep you informed of any needs on a regular basis through our web site and e-mail. Keep the Gulf Coast in your prayers and help when you can.
