ASSIGNMENT GUIDE: Reaction Paper #2 (Due Date: FRIDAY, April 10, 2009 by noon at Walker 126) For your second paper, you will have to do library research to find a scholarly article from an academic journal in the area of communication studies or mass communication. The article should be at least 10 pages long. The research in the article must cover some aspect of race, culture AND communication. Read the essay, making notes as you read. (See the “How to Read Critically” handout at the COM 3534 Web site.) Then write your paper according to the specifications below. (Read carefully.) LENGTH: 3 ½ -5 pages. I. Summary of the Work To develop the first part of your paper, do the following: Write an informative summary of the material. Condense and paraphrase the content of the work by discussing its main points and key supporting points. Use brief quotations from the text to illustrate important ideas. Use APA or MLA-style parenthetical page number citations as you would for a research paper. Summarize the material so that the reader gets a general sense of all key aspects of the work – the thesis, the theoretical foundation, the methodology, the results, the conclusion. Keep the summary objective and factual. You can refer to the author by last name after the first reference. II. Reaction to the Work To develop the second part of your paper, explain how the issues or ideas discussed in the reading relate to issues related to mass media and racial image. Make connections to course themes and ideas presented in other readings. Explain the facet of the mass media’s relationship to society does the reading helps you to understand better. How does the article increase your understanding of a particular issue? How does it change your perspective on the subject? III. Conclusion In your conclusion, evaluate the merit of the article, the importance of its points, its accuracy, completeness, organization, its use of sources and so on. Throughout the paper, avoid dull sentences that begin with “I think,” “I believe,” “I feel,” and so on. Simply make your assertions directly and explain them thoroughly.
