Course Aims:

This course combines the contents of Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 in a single course. It is designed to introduce Spanish to students with no previous knowledge of the language and to introduce some key cultural features of the Spanish speaking world. At the end of the course, students should be able to have mastered the basics of Spanish pronunciation so that they can be understood by Spanish speakers around the world. Also, students should be able to communicate simple messages in Spanish: they should be able to talk about themselves, their friends and relatives, describe people and places and express likes and dislikes. At a later stage students should be able to hold conversations on topics such as holidays and shopping in order to be able to plan a vacation with friends. 1

B+ His/her pronunciation, orthography, accuracy and listening/reading B comprehension of Spanish are good overall. BAdequate: Student is able to communicate clearly and accurately (speaking and writing) some of the time. Mistakes sometimes impair communication. C+ His/her pronunciation, orthography, accuracy and listening/reading C comprehension of Spanish are adequate overall. CMarginal: Student is not able to communicate clearly and accurately (speaking and writing) most of the time. Mistakes often impair communication. Basic forms of introduction, talking about oneself, the Spanish alphabet, asking for the meaning of things, pronunciation rules, common greetings, Spanish in the world, names of countries, gender and number agreement, the Spanish articles, talking about people, professions and nationalities, the numbers from 0 to 100, the Spanish verb system, the present tense with regular verbs, the verbs SER, ESTAR and GUSTAR, talking about likes and dislikes, giving opinions, describing people, talking about hobbies, the family, giving opinions, talking about holidays, expressing holiday preferences, choosing a holiday destination, describing places and activities, talking about shops and products, inquiring about products and 3
