COVER PHOTO Jeremy Why purchased this 1968 E-Type OTS two years ago from a friend in Seattle whose late husband had owned it. The restoration begun by him was still incomplete but Jeremy struggled home with it, closely followed by friends in a more reliable Volvo filled with tools. According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, the car was originally sold in California and is a Series 1, often referred to as a 1½ series in the U.S. Jeremy’s improvements to the car, during the last two years, have been “primarily cosmetic”. He has installed a new stainless steel exhaust system from Malcolm Ives and upgraded “those dreadful looking Stromberg Carburetors” to triple SU’s. The red line tyres were switched from his TR6. He plans to install a new Stayfast convertible top shortly and move the brake pedal ½" to the left, for more foot space. The quilt draped on the car, made by his wife, Barbara, consists of twelve hand sewn panels depicting car related icons, including the slogan "Grace, Pace and Space". Photo by Nic Harvey page 2

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

EDITOR’S NOTES

Ian Cameron

John Gordon

By the time you read this I’ll be in Sacramento, to collect my latest folly, a 1919 Stanley touring car. If I’m lucky, I’ll even be able to bring it back to Canada, but the seller has managed to lose the title (actually, he’s not sure he ever got it when he bought the car, although he’s been driving it for several years), so the US customs may not let it leave the country. Well, we’ll see.

Well, this issue did not get out before the Board meeting but I do expect to have it posted to the website before the AGM. However, the mailed copies are unlikely to be delivered before the AGM and, for that, I do apologise. I did have a very nice trip to California. Our daughter lives in a household of high-tech nerds. On their 67 inch TV, they played for us an episode of Top Gear, which they had recorded, in which a race was organised, from London to Edinburgh, of three “machines from the late forties”; a steam engined train, a racing motorcycle and an XK120 DHC. (The Jag won.) That was fun but, apart from that, and a few very nice, newish examples of the marque on the streets of Palo Alto, Los Altos and Santa Cruz, I did not think about Jaguars.

Moving on to other things, I hope that all of you who own an XJ made in the 1990s appreciate what the ‘cash for clunkers’ program in the States has done for the value of your cars. These cars are among the most popular imports being crushed, which means that the remaining ones are going to be worth more. And why are these cars being sent to the crusher? Two reasons. First, to get the maximum rebate of $4,500, you have to buy a car that gets at least 10 more mpg than the trade-in, and almost every car built these days gets more than 10 mpg better than the XJ. Secondly, the XJ is about the cheapest car that qualifies. You can pick up a 1992 XJ 6 in running condition for about $1,000, so you can make a quick profit of $3,500 for an hours work. I actually know a couple of people who have sold their XJs to people in the States who couldn’t find cheap ones for sale down there, such was the demand. Ah, well. From the sublime to the ridiculous, or maybe the other way round, the Tata Nano BS 11 (there’s an unfortunate name for you, like selling Citroens in Holland, “citroen” being the Dutch word for “lemon”) goes for the equivalent of $2,900 CDN in India, and now that Tata has dealerships across North America they hope to start selling them here. I figure on buying one to replace the spare in the XJ6. It’ll just fit in the boot. Wish me luck in the Land of the Free (unless you want to go somewhere or do something).

After our return to Victoria, it took a while to find some inspiration and enthusiasm to tackle this issue. I didn’t have much material at hand so I went to the internet and did a search for “Jaguar concept cars”. “Your Future Jaguars” (page 5) is the result. The first couple were much as I expected but the C-XS is a bit “far out” for me. A car that can change from a saloon to a sports car at whim and vary its colour to match your wardrobe! At least, Jaguar is pushing the envelope! In the October issue, I said that Mike Skene’s photos didn’t need text, and they didn’t. However, just after I posted that issue, I received Bennie Chisholm’s story on the BC Tour (page 7). I didn’t know that she was writing it and she saw the October issue just as she was ready to send it to me. She sent it with a note to say that I could use it or not as I chose. I think that it is a delightful story from “She Who Puts Up With Grumpy Bear”. I hope that I will be forgiven for illustrating it by reprinting a few of Mike’s photos. I also hope that we will see more of Bennie’s stories. In the report on the “Autumn Prowl To Cowichan Lake” (page 9), we have another new photographercontributor, who sent me 23 photos, Istvan Papp. His pictures are good and very welcome. Each photographer has his own style and mixing photos from several people, (e.g. plus Steve and Simon) makes an interesting collage. Another new and welcome contribution is the cartoon (page 13) which Dennis Dean slipped to me several months ago at the monthly meeting. It was a cutting from a magazine. All contributions are fun and help to make the Growler interesting. Finally, I ended up with one empty column. So, I put in a second “Auction Report”. But, I was using the November issue of Sports Car Market, which is entirely devoted to the 6 auctions at THE August “Monterey Weekend”. Of 836 cars offered, 561 were sold for a total $119,784,028. That was down from $139m in 2008 and $135m in 2007, but much better than the previous all-time high of $101m in 2006. There’s still money for toys it seems. page 3

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS keeping you informed Please attend our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, November 24th. We’ll have a review of the past year, take a look at the Club’s finances, review this year’s Jaguars on the Island, and have elections for our Board of Directors for 2010. For more details, please see the notice on page 18 of this issue. Also in this issue is information (page 15) regarding our annual Christmas Dinner, which takes place on Sunday, December 6th. This is always a highlight of the year, an opportunity to spend some time with other members before the busy holiday season. See you there! New members this month are Gary & Linda Dilks of Duncan, who have a 2004 XKR convertible, Julia Hall of Victoria, who has a 2001 S-Type, and Jack & Marjorie Doell of Victoria who have a 2005 XJ8. Please extend a big JCCV welcome. This brings our membership to 282 people from 159 households, and together we own 235 Jaguars. Last year, at this time, we had 277 members from 156 households owning 222 Jaguars. See you at the AGM! PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS

YOUR FUTURE JAGUARS ??? some concept cars posted on the Internet Jaguar Limo-Green Concept Foretells Hybrid Future for XJ Sedan Posted 9/15/2009 7:33 PM Unwilling to be outdone by its German and Japanese prestige rivals, Jaguar used Frankfurt to present its take on how a range-extended future will look with a hybrid variation of its flagship XJ sedan. The XJ Limo-Green Concept uses the new 1.2-liter/ three-cylinder Range Extender gasoline engine created by Lotus Engineering to recharge a lithium-ion battery pack that powers an electric motor that makes 195 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That combo will allow the car to run for up to 30 miles in zero-emission mode while giving it a total range of 600 miles, a top speed of 112 mph and a combined Euro-cycle fuel economy rating of 57 mpg. Jaguar execs admit that the one-off XJ LimoGreen design needs some additional refinement, but they've also confirmed there's definite production intent for this high-efficiency package with the XJ being the most likely target vehicle. As a side note, a similar kind of range-extended power train system would also seem to be fairly adaptable to the Land Rover side of its business. While Jaguar presented no production timeline for the XJ Limo-Green, the real key to moving it into series-build status revolves around improving the reliability and lowering the cost of its critical hybrid components, a goal that still seems to be several years off. Scoop! Jaguar Extended-Range Hybrid Sports Car in the Works - New Jag Roadster Set to Get 21st Century, Green-Economy Boost June 12, 2009 / By Mike Connor Timing on Jaguar's XE two-seat roadster may slip past its planned 2011 Geneva show introduction thanks to lean resources resulting from the global economic crisis. However, Motor Trend has learned that whenever it first appears, the sports car will get a 21st Century, green-economy boost in the form of a Chevrolet Volt-like power plant. An electric motor with an extendedrange three-cylinder gas engine is being engineered for the new-age E-Type, in addition (we hope) to Jaguar's conventional 5.0-liter and supercharged 5.0-liter V-8s. Whether the extended-range XE will make it beyond the concept stage is uncertain.

It's also unclear whether the electric XE would be in addition to an extended-range electric XJ rumoured to be scheduled for introduction in late 2011, a year after the conventional XJ's release. Ratan Tata, whose company bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Company, is said to support the XE's development. His father once owned a Jaguar XK120 and Tata told Autocar earlier this year, "We need to emerge with something shiny and new, which is why we are reprioritizing the roadster right now." The 5.0-liter, 385-horsepower AJ V-8 and 510horsepower, supercharged 5.0 are obvious choices for the XE. While an extended-range electric XJ would be designed to take on the Fisker Karma, an extended-range electric XE could be a competitor for the all-electric Tesla Roadster. 2010 Jaguar CXC Coupe will run off Hydrogen Fuel Posted February 4 2009 02:32 PM by RimZ

Designer Phillip Dean designed the new Jaguar C-XC concept, a coupe that is trying to keep the brand while, at the same time, minimizing its environmental impact. The Jaguar C-XC cell is powered by hydrogen fuel. Improved aerodynamics is covered by means of wheels and a touch of glass on the body. The Jaguar C-XS Concept Car

(Continued on page 6)

(Continued from page 5)

YOUR FUTURE JAGUARS, continued The Jaguar C-XS concept car can intelligently tailor the needs of a driver by changing its shape and style in two different modes. The Saloon Mode features a higher roofline, allowing four people to sit in a comfortable manner. Alternatively, when it is in Sport Mode, the car folds the rear seats and lowers the driver’s seat to give it a sportier feel and appearance. Moreover, the interior of the car changes in this mode by rearranging the air vents, placing a large grill, changing the headlight’s shape and pushing back the roofline to make it lower.

The Elastomeric Material made canopy of the car holds a frame underneath, which allows the roof to change its shape and a strong electric current flow makes it as sturdy as aluminium. Besides, the car will give the owner a sense of individuality and style depending on what the key holder is wearing. The key scans its surroundings and accordingly changes colour into the most dominant one.

BC SPECTACULAR TOUR - MOUNTAINS & VALLEYS by Bennie Chisholm (She Who Puts Up With Grumpy Bear) photos by Mike Skene In July, an average of twelve Jaguars purred and growled over the highways and byways of southern British Columbia. The cool cats came from Vancouver Island, Washington state, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary. For six days they produced a moving palette of colour – red, black, silver, blue, white, and misty green. The occupants of the sleek Jags wore rain gear while eating lunch in Agassiz’s central park, saw soupy fog at the viewpoint of Hope Princeton rockslide, and miraculously donned sunglasses at Princeton. From then on sunshine illuminated magnificent mountains, green forests, pinebeetled grey trees, sage deserts, lush valleys, raging rivers, lazy lakes, and twisty but good roads. The tour had been organized by Doug and Eileen Ingram. Doug, the alpha male, kept everything under control. He knew exactly where to fuel up – gas for Jags and deli food for occupants - and knew precisely where to eat lunch and visit the necessary room. He also had chosen good places to bed down, two being First Nation resorts. St. Eugene’s Mission Resort, south of Kimberly and north of Cranbrook, is a converted residential school with lovely ensuite bedrooms, a delightful restaurant and lounge, a new wing with a casino, a well-kept golf course, and a swimming pool. A plaque on the wall near the front desk has the message: “Here we lost our culture and here we regain it.” The lovely resort enticed two Jag occupants to stay an extra night. Another outstanding destination was Talking Rock Resort on Little

Shuswap Lake. The talking part apparently originated from pictographs on rocks, not from echoes. Jag owners swam in the lake, meandered on pathways, and avoided golfing. At the group dinner, a local specialty of chicken or salmon baked in clay was served -- diners obtained their protein by smashing the clay with a wooden mallet. After an entertainer described his First Nation name, each member of the Jag group created his/her new name. The process was hilarious - eg: Squawking Squaw (Eileen Ingram) and Grumpy Bear (Merritt Chisholm). At Nk’Mip in Osoyoos, many Jag owners decadently tasted wine while others vigorously walked with guides and actually spotted a rattlesnake. The Borscht Bowl restaurant in Grand Forks provided a Doukabor cultural education. Picnic lunches were eaten at scenic areas such as Olive Lake, Craigellachie (the last spike), and Gold Pan Provincial Park on the banks of the North Thompson River. Funfilled group dinners were held in restaurants at Princeton, Nelson, Talking Rock, and Pemberton. Participants with airconditioned Jags found the six day jaunt wonderful. Those with less comfortable Jags found it a trifle long. Everyone was impressed with British Columbia’s wide variety of spectacular scenery. Hopefully Doug and Eileen will plan another tour next year.

AUTUMN PROWL TO COWICHAN LAKE by Steve Koerner & John F-P, photos by Steve, Simon Scutt & Istvan Papp

The Prowl began on schedule despite there being some confusion about the whereabouts of the meeting point in Costco's parking lot. Nervousness concerning November weather was unwarranted. Fifteen cars left to drive up the Malahat in glorious sunshine. The meeting with the Up-Island contingent at the Forestry Museum, north of Duncan, met with a glitch. The Museum parking lot was closed. Luckily, the road outside provided sufficient room for our cars, plus the additional five from Up-Island, without incurring flak from the local residents. We then numbered 36 people in 20 cars. As we crossed the Trans-Canada highway on Drinkwater Road, we could see the prominent local feature, Mt. Prevost, on our right. This mountain is noted for a war memorial on the summit. Shortly afterwards, we passed another local landmark, an Edwardian era country manor house, The Grange, designed by the renowned architect, Samuel McClure, nearly one hundred years ago for an author and big game hunter, Sir Clive Phillips-Wolley. Part of the route followed Riverbottom Road, a narrow, twisty, but well surfaced road that took us along the Cowichan River. The river has recently been recognised by the Federal Government with the designation of "Heritage River". It is one of only ten so recognised in Canada. The Prowl ended in Lake Cowichan Village with lunch scheduled at a local pub, "Dermod & Dudley's". Steve arranged for us all to have window seating and the owners' obliged. The view of the lake and weir was outstanding, not to mention, the lovely autumn colours surrounding the lake. Steve K., forever an historian, circulated among the tables to explain the history of the weir and the now defunct railways. The region is now a prime recreation area, most noted for fly fishing. We had great food and service and great camaraderie; what a finish to a successful 2009 series of Prowls! See you next year.

TURKEY HEAD COFFEE KLATCH

SCM© AUCTION REPORT RM Auctions Monterey, CA - August 13-15, 2009

by Marke Simmons

Although it was cool upon arrival, the sun loomed bright to greet the dozen or so Jaguars at Turkey Head on October 18th. Barbara and Jeremy Why arrived in sporting fashion, with the top down, in their beautiful OTS, and it was great to see John F/P behind the wheel and feeling his '' old self '' again. Some of the gossip included the possibility that someone in the Club will co-ordinate a tour to the Western States Meet, in Santa Maria next spring. Several members have already booked accommodations, including Dorothy and Terry S., Bennie and Merritt C. and Carol and Marke S. It was a lively group on Sunday morning, and chatter and laughter buzzed well into the lunch hour.

The next Coffee klatch will be on Sunday December 20th, 9 - noon, at Turkey Head (Oak Bay Marina parking lot). Please join us if you can.

JCCV BITS & BYTES

SCM© AUCTION REPORT Gooding & Company Pebble Beach, CA - August 15-16, 2009

WESTERN STATES MEET April 26-30th 2010 Santa Maria Calif. A number of people from the Club are making plans to attend this event. It is suggested that those interested in coming book rooms at the host hotel asap. (You can always cancel if you don't go.) Details on the event, and contact information for the hotel, are posted at www.jcna.com. The members who have booked are opting for the newer rooms. A tour down (approx 5 days) will be arranged, and will include highway 101, highway 1, the redwoods, and plenty of ocean side driving. This is a fabulous location for the event, and April in California needs to be experienced. If interested, please contact Terry Sturgeon (250) 370-2299; [email protected] Editor: Apparently, someone sent a cheque payable in Canadian dollars. I have been asked to remind our readers that US$ are required. Probably a US$ money order is best, if you don’t have a US$ bank account, as it appears that they are not taking credit cards. Also, I have received from the organizers a full page email detailing the menus for all the meals. I would be pleased to pass on a copy to anyone who requests it. THE WONDERS OF MODERN COMMUNICATION I recently received the message below from Tim LeslieSpinks. He just happened to be in Reno, at the car museum looking at a car that he knew would interest me. So, with his new Blackberry, he snapped a photo and then sent me the message. You have received a Picture Message from your Rogers Wireless friend Hi John, Here is a picture of a 1949 XK120 that I snapped at the National Car Museum in Reno yesterday. I was interested to note that it does not have any of those indicator tags that have caused such controversy. Not sure if it is aluminium, but it was very interesting to see one of the very early ones in the "flesh." BTW this car has almost no miles. I wished you were here to see it. Regards, Tim
