Specialist Leaders in First World War Education As part of your involvement in the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tour Programme, you have the opportunity to apply to become a Specialist Leader in First World War Education. In the first instance, we are looking to appoint around 30 Specialist Leaders in First World War Education to help us deliver the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme. The role will provide a unique opportunity to support the delivery of leading edge First World War teaching and learning to your peers and to be centrally involved in this unique, prestigious and award winning Programme. Open to those aspiring to be outstanding middle or senior leaders, the role of Specialist Leader in First World War Education will not only develop your leadership and management skills, but it will also be pivotal in developing and delivering aspects of our Programme and help to expand its reach into schools at a local and regional level.

What the role entails As a Specialist Leader in First World War Education, you will be required to facilitate and engage in some/all of the following:        

  

Establish and lead local/regional school networks Lead pre-tour teacher professional development sessions Accompany tour groups to showcase examples of outstanding onsite First World War teaching and learning activities Provide examples of post-tour activities/projects which impact beyond your own school Work with other schools and community groups to develop examples of post-tour commemorative projects – including the ‘Legacy 110’ initiative Develop and promote innovative and engaging teaching and learning materials for inclusion on the Programme’s website and where appropriate for use on the tours Develop the use of media and digital technology on battlefield tours which enhance onsite learning and/or assist in the delivery of post-tour projects Carry out research aimed at improving teacher and student knowledge and understanding of the First World War and helping us to evaluate the impact of the education programme on teachers and students Develop cross-curricular approaches to the delivery of First World War content/study Develop and trial examples of effective SEN classroom and onsite materials Support school recruitment via social media

What you’ll receive in return  

UCL Institute of Education Certification as a Specialist Leader in First World War Education Support with setting and achieving Professional Development Targets

Professional Development opportunities (for example; the national Specialist Leader launch event; annual Specialist Leader events; coaching teachers; supporting the delivery of posttour school/community projects; contributing to wider school improvement goals; establishing new and innovative working practices; networking opportunities etc.) Participation in regional/national teacher development events (including delivery) Access to First World War experts, expertise and outstanding pedagogy Engagement in national applied research A lead role in the delivery of an innovative approach to First World War teaching and learning across a group of schools Support to develop leadership and management expertise Access to a dedicated area for Subject Leaders on our online teacher’s forum where you will be able interact with other Subject Leaders and our National Education co-ordinators Support for running regional/local networks – guest speakers, administrative support, branded materials
