“A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” 1. What is the first question you’d like to ask Garcia Marquez? What is your second question? 2. If an angel did come to Earth, what would you expect it to look like? How is this old man ironically unlike an angel? 3. What human shortcomings might Garcia Marquez be satirizing in this story? Consider:  How do Pelayo and Elisenda treat the old man?  Why does Father Gonzaga suspect the old man is not an angel?  How do people react to the “spectacles” of the angel and the spider- woman? 4. What details in this story are examples of magic realism? Which of Garcia Marquez’s images did you find most startling and memorable? 5. Do you think the old man is a divine figure or an evil one? Are there any other explanations for his identity? Did he fall into our world from the world of myth, or is he an alien from another universe that is full of winged persons? 6. Do you think this story is intended merely to amuse and astonish us, or does it mean something deeper? Consider:  Does the old man symbolize the miracles we wish for but are unable to accept when they happen?  Does the old man symbolize the artist, who is often mocked and misunderstood by other people and whose imagination longs to soar? 7. Great literature, whether realistic or fantastic, connects to our hearts, imaginations, or minds. Did the story connect with you at all? Elaborate.
