Using Blended Inquiry Learning Combining Hands-On and Virtual Laboratory (VL) Instruction to support Secondary Schools Students learning Biology Experiment in Indonesia Heru Setiawan Digital Learning Department, Faculty of Education, Monash University Australia

Abstract Background: Three main problems faced by many high school laboratories in Indonesia are a lack of lab facilities, time-consuming, and challenging in checking students’ performance. However, laboratory experiment is necessary for Learning Biology. In the new curriculum of 2013, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is integrated into all subjects. It might support the implementation of virtual labs as an alternative solution to overcome the limitations of biology lab facilities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Virtual Laboratory instruction to enhance students’ conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge compared to traditional class in Secondary Schools in Indonesia. Virtual laboratory is an experimentation using computer software simulation. Method: This study was a part of a larger design experiment examining the pedagogical potential of the Virtual laboratory in Indonesia. The control group learned through hands-on lab methods while the experimental group used blended learning which is the combination of Virtual Lab and hands-on experiment of the excretory system. The result shows that there was a significant difference between the control and experimental groups on the gains from the pre-to-post assessment of conceptual knowledge. In addition, there was a significant difference of students’ procedural knowledge between the group with an effect size of d = 0.64. Additionally, this study also suggests that a complementary approach, where virtual laboratory using computer as preliminary guidance and hands-on activities are integrated, could be a good technique for supporting student scientific understanding of biological experiment in the 21st century learning. Promoting Active Learning through the Use of Mobile Technology Nadia Hanoum

Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia

Abstract In higher education, students are expected to be independent learners who are able to manage their own learning. However, the expectation is often far from reality because students tend to be passive during learning and depend much on their lecturers. It is therefore pertinent to promote active learning to university students in order to change their passive learning behaviours into active participation. For this purpose, the researcher used WhatsApp group as an alternative platform in which students could interact with their peers and lecturer and discuss learning materials in ways that were more flexible and convenient. This case study employed qualitative approach and collected its data from a sample of five students. The data was collected through interview and document analysis. The research found that students typically had positive responses to the use of mobile technology since it fit their lifestyle as digital generation. However, it was also found that although they could easily access multimedia (photos, video, audio and document files) uploaded to the WhatsApp group, learning materials in form of short videos and pictures with caption were more preferable than other media, which might prevent them to optimally gather and process information needed to construct their understanding of the given materials. The main finding of this research is that the use of WhatsApp group is able to build supportive learning environment that encourages students to actively construct their own knowledge and understanding, which lead to a more effective and independent learning. That is to say, WhatsApp group can be used to promote active learning behaviours because it relies on mobile technology which offers mobility and portability and therefore makes active learning more feasible and less demanding. Abstract Creativity is one of skills higher education institutions (HEIs) need to develop of the students to address challenges of the 21st century. Through the development of creativity, it is expected that students can meet the ever more complex demands of the workplaces. The identification of students’ creativity is necessary in order for the HEIs to be able to design an effective instructional program to develop it. This creativity identification is also needed to support the implementation of a product-oriented education. Based on the results of identification, it was revealed that generally students’ creativity could be said as being at the level “ordinary/routine”. The fluency aspect was at the highest level of creativity. It goes to say that students’ creativity could still be improved to the level of creative or very creative. It was also revealed that students relatively were unable to recognize the importance of a deep knowledge base and continual work to learn new things The strongest aspects were the openness to new ideas and the active search for new ideas. It can be concluded that there should be attempts from the lecturers to develop students’ creativity. REFLECTIVE LEARNING: TEACHERS’ FAILURE IN CHOOSING LEARNING METHOD IS ONE SOURCE OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING PROBLEM AND MISCONCEPTION Sandi Budi Iriawan Indonesia University of Education (UPI)

Abstract Teachers’ Failure in Choosing Learning Method Is One Source of Students’ Learning Problem and Misconceptions. Reflection is a metacognitive activity done by teachers upon the completion of teaching learning process. Through this activity, teachers revisit the learning process based on the learning accomplishment and achievement. The accomplishment of learning objectives is subject to teachers’ responsibility in choosing appropriate method relevant to the course subject, learning materials based on its structures and students. Every course subject is so unique that require different learning approach (Subject Specific Pedagogic). In addition, the structure of learning materials in a course subject consist different characteristics involving factual, conceptual and procedural knowledge that requires the teacher to decide the appropriate learning method relevant to the learning material characteristics (Pedagogical Content Knowledge). Teachers’ failure in choosing appropriate learning method affect students learning achievement. This is indicated by students’ learning problem and misconceptions. Ideally, a teacher is supposed to recognize his students’ characteristics before the teaching learning process starts so that the teacher can identify students’ initial learning as the consideration in deciding prerequisites for the students. Students’ learning problem and misconception in prerequisite subject affects students learning achievement. This happens because there are some intertwinement among concepts in the learning process. Professional teachers will apply various method during the teaching learning process since they realize that the learning materials are different and unique. Therefore, the lesson plans prepared by the teacher is supposed to consider learning materials and method characteristics relevant to the learning material characteristics. English Language Teaching in the 2013 Curriculum: High school teachers’ beliefs and practices Darmawan, Rusman, Dinn Wahyudin, and Mohammad Ali Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Bandung, Indonesia

Abstract While much has been researched about the practice of newly revised national curriculum (2013 curriculum) in elementary schools, research examining teachers understanding and practice of English Language Teaching (ELT) in the context of 2013 curriculum remains limited. This article explores the understanding of principles and characteristics 2013 curriculum of two Indonesian high school teachers of English and the implementation of the principles and characteristics in their lessons. Narrative reports were constructed for each teacher using semistructured interviews. These reports illustrate how each teacher implemented the principles and characteristics of 2013 curriculum in ELT classroom. The result of this study shows that the two teachers implemented very formal guidelines as suggested in the curriculum into their teaching (e.g. recount, narrative, and descriptive text and language components). In term of communication tasks, the two teachers used different strategies. Teacher 1 tends to use communicative approach (e.g. role play), while teacher 2 used drill and repetition to stimulate the students to speak out. The two teachers realized that very limited time is available to explore and to develop students communicative skills. What the two teachers understand from the principles and characteristics of the 2013 curriculum is somewhat narrow. They tend to perceive that to implement the principles and characteristics of the 2013 curriculum in ELT classroom, English teachers require extra endeavor. The effectiveness of the Group-Based Differentiation Learning Model at Junior High School level Toto Ruhimat Kurikulum dan Teknologi Pendidikan Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia

Abstract This study focuses on the effectiveness of the Group-Based Differentiation Learning Model at Junior High School level (SMP). The SMP level is expected to prepare its graduates to have knowledge, attitude and skill as an intelligent and civilized society member with high level of thinking ability, independent attitude and cooperation. According to Piagets development theory that at the age of junior high school including the age group (formal operational thought) is the age level that is able to solve problems scientifically. The result of preliminary study shows that there are still many IPS lessons in junior high school is still expository and uniform, so that the lesson learned by the students is less than optimal. In fact, in this age students should be able to apply the way of scientific thinking (using scientific reason) and able to combine ideas (skill fully combaning) and able to interact with others. The results of this study indicate that this learning can improve students thinking and social skills based on individual potential differences. This is evident in the improvement of thinking ability from fact to procedure, and in the cognitive process dimension from memory to analysis even to the creative process. Similarly, students social skills have a significant improvement based on the descriptive scale assessment of the less cooperative to be able to cooperate. Based on the validation showed that there is a significant difference of pretest, postes and gain results from control group with experiment in thinking ability and social ability. This learning model is defined as a Class-Based Differentiated Learning Model, which is a learning model that has special characteristics in the design, implementation, and evaluation of learning. Its development is based on the principles of democracy, cooperative, integrity, flexibility, and student differences. This learning essentially develops students ability to think and social skills according to individual potential. Abstract Issues relating to the environment is a global issue that demands attention from various sectors including education . In early childhood education, environmental education becomes the starting point for early childhood awareness in the environment around them. The horizon of appreciation of this ecological linkage will be more profound and widespread when supported by a planned and sustainable environmental education praxis. The application of these four principles in daily life requires the support of adults around the child who will be the facilitator for the child in an effort to understand and love the environment. The success of environmental education for early childhood should be implemented through an integrated learning process, an exemplary element of the teacher as well as opportunities for children to take concrete action related to environmental education..This discussion will be focus on conceptualization of environmental education and its implementation in earlychildhood setting. The Development of dance Learning Model Based on Malay Culture in Improving the Creativity of Young Learners Nurlita Universitas Negeri Jakarta

Abstract

The background of this research is the dance learning model for young learners who should apply the “free”, “open”, and “student-centered” approach by focused on the process, not the product, because the students’ ability in moving is limited. It is different from the adults in doing the dance movements. A dance learning should give a pleasure and useful experiment for the students, not make them feel stressed. The creativity of each student needs to be recognized and developed through an appropriate stimulus so that the learners’ creativity can be reached. The creative mind and action should be developed since in the young age, because a creative children tends to solve their problem better, especially when they are adult later. In the fact, the dance learning for young learners is still far from the expectation. The process still focuses on the teachers. The learners just sit and learn passively. They just follow the instruction or movements from the teachers and tend to don’t think critically, creatively, and innovatively. The method of the research is Research and Development, which is aimed to create a certain product and to test the effectiveness of the product.

Universitas Negeri Semarang

Abstract This study was motivated by the Indonesian government policy to ensure that education services at all levels, including preschool, are accessible and therefore inclusive. A key foundation to inclusive education is the notion that all children, including those with special needs, have the same right to education. In reality, not all Indonesian preschools are ready to operate their center inclusively. Additionally, parents of the so-called normal children have certain anxiety if their children are taught along with those with special needs. This research aims to portray teachers strategies of inclusive classroom management. A Jakarta-based preschool was chosen as the setting of this study, considering that not only it is an inclusive institution but also because of its position as a national reference. The study follows the ethnographic analysis as suggested by Spradley (Spradley, 1980). Data were collected by observing, interviewing and document analysis. Our findings show inclusive classroom management necessitated two-branched actions, one actions were targeted at classroom activities and another one was targeted at children interaction. These findings can be useful to preschool educational institutions in Indonesia who look for a model of inclusive class management strategy. Abstract The term ‘boys will be boys’ is widely accepted in society as if masculine identity is innate and natural. This paper adopts a social-constructivist approach to gender which view gender identity as a product of culture and nurture. This article assumes that boys construct their masculinity through various modalities including social learning with both adults or peer groups and non-human interactions. This article examines existing literature published between 1980s-2010s about boys and masculinity to develop an understanding of how young boys construct their masculinities, what factors contribute to their masculine identity, and how the research about boys’ masculinities was prepared and conducted. The conceptual framework and methodology of each literature are the important parts of the investigation. Most of the literature was developed in non-Indonesian context. This paper will also examine the applicability of the literature in Indonesian context to produce a recommendation of necessary modification for research about boys and masculinity in Indonesia. WASTE MANAGEMENT BASED ON WISE BEHAVIOR IN JAPAN AND INDONESIA Mustofa Kamil, Indriyani dan Purnomo PLS UPI

Abstract Environmental damage is not only caused by the lack of understanding of the environment as a result of low educational background, but it is often caused by many factors, especially about the fulfillment of life needs that are not based on wise knowledge, awareness, attitude and behavior about how to maintain and preserve environment due to greed, waste, and ignorance. Environmental issues, especially waste, are very easy to find in Indonesia. We often encounter rubbish strewn across the river, drainage, rice field, roadside, and other open areas, which are difficult to find in Japan especially in Kitakyushu City. This research was conducted for 6 months under qualitative case study approach, the location of this research was in Kitakyushu City of Japan and Bandung City Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to depict household waste management in Japan and Indonesia realized in the wisdom behavior by society in managing the waste. The research results show that the efforts made in building environmental wisdom in Kitakyushu Japan are realized by integrating "environment conservation" policy and "industry promotion" policy with the aim of building resource-recycling-based community. In fact, these efforts are conducted jointly between government, community and industry by optimizing the industrial infrastructures, as well as improving the community technology and knowledge capabilities. While in Indonesia, there are still non synergistic policy issues, between regulations, facilities, environmental education and ineffective waste processing technology. Post-Graduate Program of English Education, State University of Malang, jl. Semarang 5 Malang 65145, Indonesia jannahleneng.2013[at]gmail.com

Abstract The use of English as a medium of classroom instruction becomes greater as a signal of globalization and internationalization. English is highly considered as one of the most important element of education. Therefore, EMI has been practiced in many non-native countries, including Indonesia. The implementation of English as main language for classroom instruction remains the threat for education Indonesia. EMI threatens the nationalism of Indonesian students. Since the students will communicate and interact more in foreign language instead of Indonesian language which is officially the national language of Indonesia. This also means Indonesia language may lose its role as the identity of Indonesia. This becomes a challenge for Indonesian education to prepare our students to participate globally without leaving their national identity.
