Department of Dear Alumni, Students and Friends of Southeast,

Welcome to the sixth edition of the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Accounting “Spotlight” newsletter. The newsletter is designed to facilitate communication between the Southeast Department of Accounting in the Harrison College of Business and its stakeholders—including current, former, and prospective students as well as employers, high school faculty and counselors and others interested in the achievements of our program. We are quite enthusiastic to present the activities of the Department over the past year in this edition of the Newsletter. You will find that it has been an exciting a productive year for the Department of Accounting. Inside these pages, you will see that the Southeast Beta Alpha Psi chapter is the first in the world to be named for an individual, resulting from a major contribution by Mr. Thomas McCain (1970 alum). You will also read about the newly launched, Missouri Society of CPAs-sponsored launch of the NASBAs Student Center for the Public Trust chapter. In addition, you will find evidence of our students’ successes and accomplishments – via student awards, academic competitions, student organizations’ awards, internship opportunities, and job placements. You will also read about our efforts to further enhance our students’ marketability in the job market with an increased focus on technology skills. In addition, to adding a required Accounting Analytics course, a Microsoft Office Specialist-Excel certification is being added to the curriculum. In addition, the accelerated MBA program with the Accounting option provides a viable alternative for our undergraduate majors. The accelerated program allows for double-counting 12 semester hours for both undergraduate and graduate credit, at the undergraduate cost. In addition to an update on the progress and growth of our students, this edition spotlights alumnus Tom McCain (‘70). You will also read about Dr. Chuck McAllister and Dr. Alisha Ortiz’s promotions, and Dr. Gary Johnson’s appointment as the interim Dean of the Harrison College of Business. Special recognitions and awards of Dr. Beard, Dr. Marshall, and Dr. Palmer also appear in this edition. This edition of the Spotlight also reports on the sixth meeting of our Partners in Progress Advisory Board held in April 2014. You will see that we added six new members to the Board, expanding the membership to include executives in industry. You will also see that the meeting greatly expanded the time provided to Partners-Students interactions, while maintaining the time afforded to seek advice and consultation from the Partners regarding the accounting curriculum. By all accounts, the change in format was a huge success! I look forward to continuing communications with you through this newsletter. Let us know where you are and what you are doing by updating your profile at iAMsoutheast.com. If you know an alumnus who is “off our radar screen,” forward this newsletter to him or her so we can reconnect. If you have any questions or input, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Southeast Beta Alpha Psi Chapter First Ever To Be “Named” After Alumnus

L to R: Kevin Stocks, International BAP President, Becky Lohmann, BAP Faculty Advisor, Thomas K McCain, alumnus, and Kenneth W. Dobbins, Southeast MO State University President

Kenneth W. Dobbins, president of Southeast Missouri State University, announced that alumnus Thomas K. McCain has established a $250,000 endowment for the Mu Xi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, thus providing long-term funding for the Southeast College of Business student organization. In celebration of his generosity, the chapter was renamed the Thomas K. McCain Mu Xi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the first time in the history of the international organization that a chapter has been named for an individual. We are profoundly grateful for this substantial gift. The endowment will fund additional professional education and experiential learning opportunities that are critical to the development, training and success of Southeast business students and members of BAP. “Mr. McCain’s gift will have a lasting impact and his legacy will be one of providing extraordinary educational access and opportunity for many, many College of Business students now and in the future,” Dobbins said. “On behalf of all of Southeast’s current and 2 Fall 2015

future students, I would like to express our deepest appreciation for this generous endowment that will change countless lives in this region for many years to come.” McCain is a 1970 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a major in accounting. While a student at Southeast, he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a business service fraternity. After Southeast, he earned a Masters in Business Administration from the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University. He has spent his career working with various companies in the areas of finance, accounting, treasury and tax, including Dry Ice, Inc., Specialty Catalogue, Paul Harris Stores, Inc., and Edison Brothers Stores, Inc. He is currently the chief financial officer, vice president, secretary, and treasurer of SmartPak Equine, the premier online provider of horse supplies and equine supplements.

5TH ANNUAL ADVISORY BOARD Meeting Update, New Members Announced

On April 24, 2015, the fifth annual meeting of the Partners in Progress Accounting Department Advisory Board was held. The original board, partners in regional and St. Louis accounting firms and Southeast alumni, was established to provide advice and counsel regarding the strategic direction of the Southeast accounting program as well as provide input to support the success of Southeast accounting students and faculty. The purpose of the Advisory Board remains the same; however, the Advisory Board expanded its membership with six new members and expanded the representation to include executives in industry. The meetings included a morning session with updates on the College and the accounting major presented to the Partners, followed by brief discussions between the Partners and accounting faculty. The Partners then served as members on a panel in which they fielded questions from a student group. The question and answer discourse between the Partners and students segued into an open networking opportunity for students and the Partners. A luncheon attended by students and Partners provided additional networking opportunities, with a break in the discussion as BAP conducted their annual initiation, in addition to presentations provided by BAP and StudentCPT. CENTER FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC TRUST ACCOUNTING Establishes Student Chapter At Southeast

Adds “Accounting Analytics” to Curriculum

At the beginning of the 21st century, unethical conduct—epitomized by scandals such as Enron and Worldcom—was eroding public confidence in the integrity of business professionals. In response to this crisis, in 2005 the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) established the Center of the Public Trust (CPT), and thereby launched a mission to advance ethical leadership in business, institutions and organizations. Just a few years later in 2009, NASBA broadened the scope of the CPT to include colleges and universities, and the first Student Center for the Public Trust (StudentCPT) Chapter was founded. In the Fall of 2014, with the generous support of the Missouri Society of CPAs (MSCPA), Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) became the 22nd national chapter of the NASBA StudentCPT. The SEMO StudentCPT joins Missouri chapters at the University of Missouri and Saint Louis University in providing students with opportunities to participate in training sessions, conferences, community service and business ethics competitions. Southeast student representatives attended a National StudentCPT conference in June of 2015 in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference was attended by StudentCPT Vice President Linda Schreiber and Membership Director Jace Mortimer, who represented Southeast and joined 65 other student chapter members from across the United States. Conference attendees had the opportunity to network with over 300 NASBA professionals, and participated in idea sharing and planning activities for the 2015-16 school year.

Accountants are increasingly involved in the analysis and evaluation of large interrelated data sets (i.e., “big data”). The skills necessary to query data sets and detect non-conforming or unusual transactions is becoming more important while the requirements for “sampling” fade in an ERP-dominated world. In response to these changes, the Department of Accounting is modifying its accounting information systems course curriculum to align with the changing demands of new accountants. Specifically, the Department will now require that students pass an “Accounting Analytics” course (which will replace the previous “Accounting Information Systems” class). The Accounting Analytics course will focus on data analysis fundamentals, accounting software, and spreadsheet tools. The course will encourage (and eventually require) Accounting majors earn their Microsoft Office Specialist - Excel Basic certification. To accomplish the latter, the Department will provide (at no charge to students) the testing software whereby candidates can take practice exams an unlimited amount of times prior to taking the exam. At the HCB level, free workshops will be provided for exam preparation. The exam will also be administered by SEMO at about 35% of the retail cost.

Internships play a valuable role in accounting education and help students to get permanent employment. Real-world experience makes classroom theory come alive, allowing students to grasp the depth of their field. The employers listed below provided internships for Southeast Accounting students in 2014. Internship employers rated Southeast accounting interns an average of 94 percent, overall, in various skills such as, communication, problem-solving, and computer applications. In addition, 100 percent of these same employers stated they would hire the intern in the future. We want to recognize and thank the employers for their important role in educating Southeast students. If your firm or organization is interested in hiring a SEMO intern, please contact Rebecca Lohmann at rlohmann@ semo.edu.

1ST PLACE IN “BEST PRACTICES” Competition at Regional Bap Meeting For the second year in a row Southeast BAP students have taken first place in the Best Practices competition held at the regional Beta Alpha Psi meeting held in St Louis in March of 2015. “Best practices” are activities created and completed by a chapter to further specific goals identified by the board of directors of Beta Alpha Psi and by Deloitte. These activities exemplify the spirit and purpose of Beta Alpha Psi and, if applicable, allow other chapters to emulate those activities. The winning category was financial literacy. Four BAP students (Dustin Peetz, Matt Mason, Jeremy Lamb, and Alex Shelton) collaborated with the Southeast Missouri State University learning assistance program to create an event promoting financial literacy on campus. Approximately 75 hours were spent in the collaboration, planning, training and executing of the event. Their efforts earned $500 for the chapter and the team now advances to the annual BAP meeting in August in Milwaukee, WI to compete against each of the first place teams from each region.

JAMES AND LORI FACULTY NEWS LARAMORE OF AND NOTES SIMPLY SWIRLED Share Experiences in Starting a Business with Accounting Principles Course

James and Lori Laramore of Simply Swirled attended Dr. Debbie Beard’s AC221 Principles of Accounting class and provided insights into starting, growing, and sustaining a business. The Laramores are co-owners of Simply Swirled, a frozen yogurt business that initially opened in Cape Girardeau and has now expanded into Jackson, Sikeston, and Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Lori and Jamie emphasized the importance of doing product and geographical research and finding a product or service that is unique and unavailable in the area. They also stressed the importance of location, dependable employees, and social media in growing a profitable business. The Laramores recommended that future business owners in the class should focus on quality as well as the numbers associated with costs, revenues, and profit margins of various products. Lori and Jamie believe that being willing to change and “mix things up” from time to time is vital in sustaining a business. They also stressed that each owner should know how to perform the various aspects of running the business, but there should be clarity in areas of responsibility when there are multiple owners. Students asked questions and recommended that the owners of Simply Swirled consider opening a Southeast Missouri State University presence.

Like their business counterparts, the Southeast Department of Accounting faculty strive to continuously improve their teaching, research, and service activities. Here is an update on recent happenings: • Professor Gary Johnson of the Department of Accounting has been named the Interim Dean of the Harrison College of Business while Gerald McDougall serves an Interim Provost of Southeast while a search is completed for a new Provost. • Charles (Chuck) McAllister was promoted to Professor in Spring 2015. • Alisha Ortiz was promoted to Associate Professor in Spring 2015. • Christine Ladwig for her selection as one of four finalists in the Academy of Legal Business (ALBS) Studies’ Master Teacher Competition! She will present her paper, Happy Birthday to the Dog with a Wristwatch: Making the Intangible Come Alive. She is in good company, with the other finalist from Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, and Texas State. • Lori Mueller passed the Excel Expert – Part I with a 100% (1000/1000 points).

PROFESSOR PALMER Lectures in Brazil

Professors Richard Palmer (Department of Accounting) and Peter Gordon (Department of Management and Marketing) of Southeast Missouri State University each conducted a 3-day seminar in September of 2014 at the School of Engineering at the Universidade Federal de Minan Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The week long seminar series was entitled “International Business, Culture and Economic Development.” Professor Gordon spoke on the role of culture in the forces driving the globalization of business. Professor Palmer spoke on emerging procurement processes and their significance to business success in a globally competitive economy. Another speaker, Herbert Manfred of the University of Applied Sciences in Schmalkalden, addressed current changes in the European Union. While in Brazil Professor Francisco Barbosa (the UMFG program coordinator) exposed the presenters to a variety of student interactions and significant aspects of Brazilian culture, including a tour of the soccer complex where Brazil played in the World Cup against Germany. Professors Gordon and Palmer were impressed with the upward momentum of the Brazilian economy and the desire of the students to engage in business at a global level. James and Lori Laramore

PROFESSOR MARSHALL INTERNS

At Bi-State Development Agency/ Metro After more than 25 years of being exclusively in the classroom, Dr. Marshall had the opportunity to go out into corporate America. Dr. Marshall worked for James Cali, CPA, Director of Internal Audit, BiState Development Agency/Metro in St. Louis, as a faculty “intern.” Although maintaining her duties as the Chair of the Department of Accounting possibly limited the full-experience of an internship, she was able to “show up for work” twice a week over a four-week period during the summer of 2015. “The experience provides me a renewed perspective to take back into the classroom. The opportunities afforded me included, in addition to meeting and working with an extremely friendly and productive staff, the value of teamwork, technology skills, and communication skills.” Dr. Marshall also witnessed the awe-inspiring value of Southeast’s accounting program, as she was co-“educated” by Angie Staicoff (‘91), an internal auditor for Metro, on the internal audit process at Metro and the SAP system. After graduating from Southeast with a major in accounting, Angie worked for four years with KPMG, spent the subsequent seven years with the American Red Cross as the Manager of Financial Reporting, and joined Metro in 2004 as an Accounting Supervisor prior to joining the internal audit department team. Angie’s attention to detail and accomplishments different areas of accounting, serve as true testament for the possibilities for all Southeast’s accounting graduates. The external audit team conducting the audit of Metro’s Internal Audit Department noted, in their findings, that the faculty intern position as a “Best Practices” and a unique opportunity to develop relationships.

BETA ALPHA PSI Leaps Forward in 2014-15

The Mu Xi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi at Southeast Missouri State University continues to set the standard for leadership on the campus. The menu of educational, social, and professional networking activities was full throughout the year, including the Annual Conference, a Meet the Firms event, a golf scramble, as well as other educational and professional networking sessions. Check out the stories below and keep up with BAP if you can! The Annual Conference The BAP annual conference was held in Atlanta, GA in August 2014. The leadership team, which consists of five students along with the faculty advisor, attended this three-day conference where they learn more about Beta Alpha Psi, how to be a great leader, and ways to make their local chapter a success. The officers attended position-specific sessions in order to learn how to better serve their chapter.
