Classroom vs. Art Studio
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
16
Teaching is an Art
A student usually requires encouragement to guide him through the curriculum. A teacher can give constant patience and encouragement in shooting for attainable goals.
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
17
Teaching is an Art
Student respect & has confidence in the instructor. Let the student feel that he is an important part of the educational process. Use rewards & punishments, compliments & admonitions. Prepare lectures full of examples & analogies, presented as a good show. Be clear in objectives.
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
18
Principles of Learning
Learning is active Learning is stimulated by interest Learning involves consecutive phases
Exploration (Intuition) Formalization (Proof) Assimilation (Application)
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
19
Lesson Plan A lesson plan consists of Specific objectives (terminal behavior, condition, criteria of acceptable performance)
Demonstrate, Construct, Identify, Organize Compare, Contrast, Differentiate, Summarize Explain, Describe, Show, Solve, Write, Discuss Apply, Contribute, Follow, Participate
Outline the main idea and the key concept Teaching media and activities
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008

Consecutive Phases of Lesson Plan
Hook Book Look Took
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
Stimulate Students’ Interest Teach Theory & Proof with Interpretations Identify New Problems Apply the Lesson Learned to New Problems
21
Design of Lesson Plan
Prerequisite (Science & mathematics review) Allocated time (1 hour or longer) Readiness of students (physical & emotional) Pressure (expectation) Active Learning (class participation) Response from students (oral & facial expression)
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008

Learning Methods
Reading books: anywhere, anytime
Lectures: structure of a subject, illustrations, interactive communication
Individual directed study: assignments, quizzes, problem-solving
Individual undirected study: research project. Extrapolation & creativity
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008

Commandments for Teachers 1. Remember the students, for they alone are the measure of your success. 2. Forget yourself, for your own excellence is good only as it helps your students. 3. Consider the purpose of your teaching, and show the students a goal as far ahead as you can see.
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
33
Commandments for Teachers (cont.) 4. Accept the students as they are and improve them as you can. 5. Show the students the real world of fact for interest and the ideal world of theory for understanding. 6. Relate new concepts to what they know, lead them from the known to the unknown. FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
34
Commandments for Teachers (cont.) 7. Repeat the main idea several times by using different explanations. 8. Let the students work. Hearing is weak, seeing is better, doing is best. 9. Let the students seek; lead them to discoveries of their own.
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
35
Commandments for Teachers (cont.) 10. Provide light, air, and quiet. Teaching is lost if attention fails. 11. Know thoroughly the subject that you teach and where it leads; present it with interest and enthusiasm. FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008

Prof. Frederick Terman, Stanford University It takes about as much time to teach a small class (40). Don’t waste time on polishing up lecture notes to the last comma and semicolon. Get new material into your courses every year. Research is one way to keep up to date.
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008

Effective Teaching
How do students learn? How do teachers teach? What goes wrong in the process? How do I plan a course? What can I do in the first week to get it off to a good start?
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
38
Effective Teaching (cont.)
What do I need to do to be an effective lecturer? How can I get students actively involved in learning? What is cooperative learning? What are inductive teaching methods? How well do they work? Why should I use them?
FDA Workshop @ Suranaree Univ Tech. Dec. 22, 2008
39
Effective Teaching (cont.)
How can I assess learning/skill development? How do I design tests that are both rigorous and fair? What are common student problems and problem students? How can I deal with them?
