Most vaccines are delivered in shots or pills, but the new one will be incorporated in raw potatoes. The potatoes have been genetically engineered to produce the key piece of an E.coli toxin that causes acute diarrhea. As the spuds move through the intestinal system and are digested, the toxin fragment is released and exposed to the immune system, which then generates antibodies against the toxin.

Most people throughout the world experience some form of silence. However, people’s attitude toward silence is dramatically different in different cultural groups. Northern European and North American societies, for example, view silence as dark, negative, and full of “nothing” - - all of which are considered socially undesirable. In other cultures such as Japan, however, silence is often positively valued. Here, breaking silence is a necessary evil; speaking is a negative act.

The area is now part of the Sahara Desert. “We know that it was anything but a desert 94 million years ago,” says Smith. “It was a green tropical environment, comparable to south Florida.” The discovery is the first time a sauropod has been found in a mangrove forest. A flexible program that’s tailored to exactly meet ad’s needs is a big advantage of home schooling, kids who learn at home also have the teacher’s full attention all the time and for families who are unhappy with public schools and can’t afford to pay tuition at private schools, this may be the only choice. There are drawbacks. Homeschoolers may miss material that’s covered in school, and they have fewer chances to mix with a wide variety of other kids. Most parents who teach their children at home make sure that the children are involved in outside activities, like sports or youth groups.

More and more cars are being manufactured and sold all over the world.

However, when these vehicles are not being driven, they must be parked. People park at the curb in one or two rows, on sidewalks, in driveways, in public parking garages and wherever they think they can get away with it. Yet there are never enough parking spaces available. Studies have shown that most cars remain parked 22.5 hours a day. The parking situation is getting critical. Therefore, it’s time to take up unconventional parking ideas. For 30 years our firm has been manufacturing mechanical auto-park systems that allow several cars to be parked, taking up only one conventional parking space

The writer’s purpose is to …………

1. complain about traffic jams

2. criticize drivers who park illegally

3. inform the public about parking areas

4. promote a new parking system

Real Exam Practice 1.1 (O’NET 54)

Zoos, the most accessible nature reserves for most people in Russia, are

becoming endangered species. With 11 million people, Moscow has only zoo covering about 60 acres. It is crowded with visitors all summer. Zoo officials say there is not enough space to keep lions, giraffes, gorillas and chimpanzees.

The city has been giving money to expand and improve it. Five major building

projects are underway and five more are planned. A few of Russia’s new banks and businesses sponsor exhibits, and an American businessman gives US$ 100 a month to buy fruit for the apes. Now many zoo workers have quit because they are paid very low wages. 1. The best headline for this passage is ………………………….

52

1) Russian zoo facing shortage of food

2) Businessmen to sponsor Russian zoo

3) Russian zoo struggling to survive

4) Workers quit Russian zoo

Real Exam Practice 1.2 (March 43) In places without fences, the western fence lizard, Sceloporus Occidentalis, lives in trees. It turns out that the five-inch-long lizard also falls out of trees-a lot. A few years ago William Schlesinger, an environmental chemist from Duke University, began studying the circulation of essential nutrients between soil and trees in a oak-studded valley near Carmel, California. He and his two colleagues placed 200 large plastic flowerpots under 40 oak trees to collect falling leaves and twigs. They soon found they were collecting lizards as well. The researchers decided to keep track of the lizard-fall by marking the reptiles and recording their size and sex. In two and a half years. Schlesinger’s team recorded 198 fence lizard falls, some of which were the same lizard’s second plunge into a pot. Extending their findings to the ground not covered by flowerpots, the researchers estimate that around 5,000 lizard fall take place every year on an คู่มือประกอบการเรียน คอร์ส ADMISSION Admission Gat Onet.indb 55

acre of Carmel woodland. That’s about 10 falls per lizard on average. But some lizards are clumsier than other ; one particularly oafish reptile managed to fall into a flowerpot 5 times in less than a month. “I don’t think anyone knew they fell out of trees at anywhere near the number,” says Schlesinger. “It certainly makes the natural history of the species more interesting.”

The looting of Thai plant and fruit varieties for development in rival export

countries is an urgent problem that the government must tackle by setting stricter protection measures for the country’s intellectual property.

Australia and the US are two major countries which have been found to be

developing tropical fruits and plants. They aim to increase their export share in the international market.

Meanwhile, Taiwan-where an international fruit-research center has been

established in trying hard to develop new varieties of fruits to meet market demand.

Duangkamol Jiambutr, director of the Thai Trade Center in Singapore, said

many new varieties of tropical fruit such as durians from Australia, longans and lychees from China and mangoes from Taiwan had been imported for marketing tests this year.

An official at the Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry said Australia

had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in setting up a research center into tropical products. Many strains of Thai plants were imported or brought home by Australian researchers who had studied in Thailand.

Ever wished you could decide what to dream at night? A Japanese toymaker

says it has a new gadget that can help you do just that.

Tokyo-based Takara Company says that its “Dream Workshop” stand – shaped

like an oversized cellular phone dock and about 14 inches tall – can be programmed to help sleepers choose what to dream.

While preparing for bed, the user mounts a photograph on the device of who

should appear in the dream, selects music appropriate to the mood – fantasy, comedy, romantic story, nostalgia – and records key word prompts, such as the name of a romantic crush. Placed near the bedside, the dream-maker emits a special white light, relaxing music and a fragrance to help the person nod off.

Several hours later, it plays back the recorded word prompts, timed to coincide

with the part of the sleep cycle when dreams most often occur. It then helps coax the sleeper gently out of sleep with more light and music so that the dreams are not forgotten. The device targets sleep-deprived businessmen, a company official said. “There are many businessmen today who say they don’t sleep because they are too busy. Just a few minutes chatting on a mobile phone reduces the brain functions

of children for almost an hour, according to new Spanish test results quoted in Norwegian media.

The tests, conducted by the German investigator Michael Klieeisen at the

Spanish Neuro Diagnostic Research Institute in Marbella, are the first to show how children’s brains react to the use of mobile phones. With the help of a scanner, Klieeisen was able to create pictures of how the brains of an 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl reacted while they used a mobile phone. The results were compared with similar tests using adult subjects.

The tests showed that the brain activity of the child subjects was reduced

significantly, especially on the side where the mobile phone was held, a few minutes after the call was begun, the report said. Also, brain activity was lower than normal in large sections of the brain for 50 minutes after the end of the call, the test results showed.

“My advice to all parents is not to allow children to use mobile phones,”

Klieeisen was quoted by Aftenposten as saying, “Not only are electrical activities affected, but also biochemical processes. We do not know if it is dangerous, but we do know that children’s brains, which are not fully developed, are more

Dear Crazy: The American Psychology Association reported that 40% to 60%

Your husband’s refusal to seek marriage counseling indicates that he has no intention of changing his pattern. It’s bad enough that he takes his hostility out on you daily. But for him to take pleasure in making your daughter cry is sick.

Please don’t let your husband’s refusal to go for counseling deter you from

getting professional help to aid you in deciding how best to protect yourself and your children. Cruel words erode the self-esteem like the ocean eats away the shore. And for children to be exposed to it day after day can cause lifelong damage.

Health and Medicine Real Exam Practice 1.9 (GAT Mar 54)

A recent study found that resident doctors know when they are exhausted,

upset or overwhelmed and when they are, they are far more likely to admit they made an error. What they are admitting is that sleepiness is not the only factor. Above and beyond that is general distress and mental fatigue, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“While fatigue is important, there is this whole domain of distress beyond

fatigue that also demands attention,” Colin West of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,

innesota, who led the study, said in an interview. The findings may help point to ways to better reduce the burdens on resident doctors, known in some countries as junior doctors, and in turn prevent mistakes. “I think this is going to have an impact on healthcare reform,” Dr. West said. “We need to put resources into training and medicine to control work hours and maintain physician well-being.”

The US Institute of Medicine reported in 1999 that between 48,000 and

98,000 Americans die each year from preventable medical errors ranging from drug overdoses to infections caught in the hospital. And doctors, unions and other experts have been clamoring to cut the work hours of residents, who are required to work at least 50 hours a week at most training hospitals.

Dr.West and colleagues surveyed 356 residents at 163 medical schools

globally. They found that 39% reported making at least one major medical error during the study period, and these doctors were also more likely to say they were sleepy, fatigued, or stressed. “What we have shown in this data is that fatigue is important, but it’s only part of the issue and previous studies have not paid much attention to the distress factors,” Dr. West said. “Over the course of their training and the course of their career everyone has made a major error. Everyone tries to be perfect but no one is.” He said only limiting work hours may not be enough.

Real Exam Practice 1.10 (GAT Mar 55)

Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows

older. But this is not true, according to Dr. Lissy F. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a board member of the New Center for Aging at the Veterans Hospital. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline as expected.

However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor speed. This means

that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only into the 30s and 40s, but into the 60s and 70s as well.

As for learning new things, and the ability to remember, studies by Dr.

Jarvik and others show that the old are equal to the young. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call “loss of memory” is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at too fast a pace.

In cases where an older person’s mental faculties really do seem to

decline, it is not necessarily due to old age or “senility.” Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state. This depression usually can be counteracted by counseling, therapy with a psychologist, or medications which fight depression.

In American society, when an older person loses something, we tend to

call him or her “senile”. But notice that when a younger person loses something, he does not blame it on senility or loss of memory. He finds some other excuse!

Real Exam Practice 1.12 (ONET 51)

Berlin- Two German teenagers robbed a girl but accidentally left their own

pictures behind for police on a discarded mobile phone. After stealing a 15-yearold’s shoes, money and mobile phone, the two older girls gave her an old mobile phone, police in the western city of Bochum said on Wednesday.

But the two 17-year-olds had forgotten that the phone had their own photos,

striking smiley poses, which police published online on Tuesday in an effort to find the culprits. The two muggers turned themselves in when the pictures appeared on the evening news.

Dr. Sue Stevens, a leading dietician and researcher in the field of food allergies

and intolerance comments that food allergies are indeed on the rise, as is the confusion between the definitions of allergy and intolerance. While an allergy is a reaction in the immune system, intolerance means that the body can’t process certain foods properly. As Stevens explains, there are several theories behind the rise of food allergy and intolerance, including that the modern society is “too clean” and does not allow the immune system to build up the required strength, and the rise of genetic modifications in food crops.

However, Stevens suspects that food intolerance such as fructose malabsorption

has always been around, they just weren’t spoken about. “Many years ago people didn’t talk about bloating and wind: they were a taboo topic. I think that the problem has always been there, it’s just that no one discussed it,” she says.

Increased demand for information on food intolerances and Irritable Bowel

Syndrome (IBS) compelled Stevens and Professor Peter Gibson, the Head of Medicine at Monash University, to co-author The Food Intolerance Management Plan (Viking), which was released in May. “There is a lot of misinformation out there. This book is the result not just of good ideas but also of good ideas but also of scientific and clinical investigation, “says Gibson. “Conventional medicine

Advanced Exercise 1.14 ข้อสอบทุนญี่ปุ่น A new study has found that it may be possible to train people to be more intelligent, increasing the brainpower they had at birth. Until now, it had been widely assumed that the kind of mental ability that allows us to solve new problems without having any relevant previous experience — what psychologists call fluid intelligence —is innate and cannot be taught (though people can raise their grades on tests of it by practicing). But in the new study, researchers describe a method for improving this skill, along with experiments to prove it works. The key, researchers found, was carefully structured training in working memory - the kind that allows memorization of a telephone number just long enough to dial it. This type of memory is closely related to fluid intelligence, according to background information in the article, and appears to rely on the same brain circuitry. So the researchers reasoned that improving it might lead to improvements in fluid intelligence. First they measured the fluid intelligence of four groups of volunteers using standard tests. Then they trained each in a complicated memory task, an elaborate variation on Concentration, the child’s card game, in which they memorized simultaneously presented auditory and visual stimuli that they had to recall later.

The game was set up so that as the participants succeeded, the tasks became harder, and as they failed, the tasks became easier. This assured a high level of difficulty, adjusted individually for each participant, but not so high as to destroy motivation to keep working. The four groups underwent a half-hour of training daily for 8, 12, 17 and 19 days, respectively. At the end of each training, researchers tested the participants’ fluid intelligence again. To make sure they were not just improving their test-taking skills, the researchers compared them with control groups that took the tests without the training. The results, published Monday in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, were striking. Although the control groups also made gains, presumably because they had practice with the fluid intelligence tests, improvement in the trained groups was substantially greater. Moreover, the longer they trained, the higher their scores were. All performers, from the weakest to the strongest, showed significant improvement. “Intelligence has always been considered principally an immutable inherited trait,” said Susanne M. Jaeggi, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at the University of Michigan and a co-author of the paper. “Our results show you can increase your intelligence with appropriate training.” Why did the training work? The authors suggest several aspects of the exercise relevant to solving new problems: ignoring irrelevant items, monitoring ongoing performance, managing two tasks simultaneously and connecting related items to one another in space

It was the summer season, when all the channels of the sea were clear of ice, and there were many trading ships abroad which might have been an easy prey had Olaf so chosen to fall upon them. Super Advanced Exercise 1.16 (TOEFL)

Most people can remember a phone number for up to thirty seconds. When

this short amount of time elapses, however, the numbers are erased from the memory. How did the information get there in the first place? Information that makes its way to the short term memory (STM) does so via the sensory storage area. The brain has a filter which only allows stimuli that is of immediate interest to pass on to the STM, also known as the working memory.

There is much debate about the capacity and duration of the short term

memory. The most accepted theory comes from George A. Miller, a cognitive psychologist who suggested that humans can remember approximately seven chunks of information. A chunk is defined as a meaningful unit of information,

คู่มือประกอบการเรียน คอร์ส ADMISSION Admission Gat Onet.indb 99

GAT O-NET - READING

99 22/2/2557 10:49:05

such as a word or name rather than just a letter or number. Modern theorists suggest that one can increase the capacity of the short term memory by chunking, or classifying similar information together. By organizing information, one can optimize the STM, and improve the chances of a memory being passed on to long term storage.

When making a conscious effort to memorize something, such as information

for an exam, many people engage in “rote rehearsal”. By repeating something over and over again, one is able to keep a memory alive. Unfortunately, this type of memory maintenance only succeeds if there are no interruptions. As soon as a person stops rehearsing the information, it has the tendency to disappear. When a pen and paper are not handy, people often attempt to remember a phone number by repeating it aloud. If the doorbell rings or the dog barks to come in before a person has the opportunity to make a phone call, he will likely forget the number instantly.* Therefore, rote rehearsal is not an efficient way to pass information from the short term to long term memory.* A better way is to practice “elaborate rehearsal”. *This involves assigning semantic meaning to a piece of information so that it can be filed along with other pre-existing long term memories.*

Encoding information semantically also makes it more retrievable. Retrieving

information can be done by recognition or recall. Humans can easily recall memories that are stored in the long term memory and used often; however, if a memory seems to be forgotten, it may eventually be retrieved by prompting. The more

cues a person is given (such as pictures), the more likely a memory can be retrieved. This is why multiple choice tests are often used for subjects that require a lot of memorization. 1. According to the passage, how do memories get transferred to the STM?

1) They revert from the long term memory.

2) They are filtered from the sensory storage area.

3) They get chunked when they enter the brain.

By this doctrine, anything and everything can be equally well explained; and it has proved as pernicious with respect to Expression as to every other branch of natural history. With mankind some expressions, such as the bristling of the hair under the influence of extreme terror, or the uncovering of the teeth under that of furious rage, can hardly be understood, except on the belief

The

community of certain expressions in distinct though allied

species, as in the movements of the same facial muscles during laughter by man and by various monkeys, is rendered somewhat more intelligible, if we believe in their descent from a common progenitor. He who admits on general grounds that the structure and habits of all animals have been gradually evolved, will look at the whole subject of Expression in a ‘new and interesting light. The study of Expression is difficult, owing to the movements being often extremely slight, and of a fleeting nature. A difference (20) may be clearly perceived, and yet it may be impossible, at least I have found it so, to state in what the difference consists. When we witness any deep emotion, our sympathy is so strongly excited, that close observation is forgotten or rendered almost impossible; of which fact I have had many curious proofs. Our imagination is another and still more serious source of error; for if from the nature of the circumstances we expect to see any expression, we readily imagine its presence. Notwithstanding Dr.Duchenne’s great experience, he for a long time fancied, as he states, that several muscles contracted (30) under certain emotions, whereas he ultimately convinced himself that the movement was confined to a single muscle. as good a foundation as possible, and to ascertain, independently of common opinion, how far particular movements of the features and gestures are really expressive of certain states of the mind, I have found the following means the most serviceable. In the first place, to observe infants; for they exhibit many emotions, as Sir C. Bell remarks, “with extraordinary force”; whereas, in after life, some of our expressions “cease to have the pure and simple source from which they spring in infancy.” In the (40) second place.it occurred to me that the insane ought to be studied, as they are liable to the strongest passions, and give uncontrolled vent to them. I had, myself, no opportunity of doing this, so I applied to Dr. Maudsley and received from him an introduction to Dr. J. Crichton Browne, who has charge of an immense asylum near Wakefield, and who, as I found, had already attended to the subject. This excellent observer has with unwearied kindness sent me copious notes and descriptions, with valuable suggestions on many points; and I can hardly over-estimate the value of his assistance. I owe also, to the kindness of Mr. Patrick (50) Nicol, of the Sussex Lunatic Asylum, interesting statements on two or three points. Thirdly Dr. Duchenne galvanized, as we have already seen, certain muscles in the face of an old man, whose skin was little sensitive, and thus produced various expressions which were

photographed on a large scale. It fortunately occurred to me to show several of the best plates, without it word of explanation, to above twenty educated persons of various ages and both sexes, asking them, in each case, by what emotion or feeling the old man was supposed to be agitated; and I recorded their answers in the words which they used. Several of the (60) expressions were instantly recognized by almost everyone, though described in not exactly the same terms; and these may, I think, be relied on as truthful, and will hereafter be specified. by convincing me how easily we may be misguided by our imagination; for when I first looked through Dr. Duchenne’s photographs, reading at the same time the text, and thus learning what was intended, I was struck with admiration at the truthfulness of all, with only a few exceptions. Nevertheless, if I had examined them without any explanation, no doubt I should have been as much perplexed, in some cases, as other persons have been. 1.
