President Tom Flynn thanked Pat Stremba for her 35 years of service to Alvernia during a recognition social on Tuesday.

Alvernia in the Community The participants of the South Reading Youth Initiative (SRYI) have just completed an eightweek Theatre Workshop with the Wyomissing Institute of the Arts (WIA). The youth worked with Beverly Houck, WIA program director, to create characters, develop original stories, produce props and costumes, and stage their own plays. The workshop culminated in a final performance held in Marciano Hall at St. Peter’s Church on Tuesday, March 17. Attendees of the performance from Alvernia Holleran Center included Ginny Hand, Jodi Radosh, Jessica Umbenhauer, and Catie Bougie. Kim Stoudt, athletics, and several Alvernia student volunteers (who had worked with the youth throughout the program) also attended the performance. Next week the SRYI will kick off an eight-week workshop with the Reading Public Museum, in which participants will have the opportunity to explore different galleries of the museum and create art projects to supplement what they’ve learned. The Holleran Center is always looking for volunteers at our SRYI events. A special thanks goes to Jodi Radosh for filming the performance.

Alumni News Alvernia alumni recently took part in a simulated interview event designed to help undergraduates get comfortable during important first-meetings with potential employers. Started by the business department and several alumni looking to mentor current students, the event involved alumni interviewing students, asking tough questions, and giving feedback on their responses and body language.

Student News The Alvernia Pep Band, under the direction of Ringgold Band conductor James Seidel, made its debut performance on Saturday, February 21, at the Alvernia men’s basketball game.

Alvernia in the NEWS... “Alvernia named to President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll” was the title of a A.D. Times article, March 5. The award, given by the Corporation for National and Community Service, is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to servicelearning and civic engagement. “Now taking a class at Alvernia University is paying off for students,” was the opening statement of a WFMZ Channel 69 News story on March 17. Jodi Radosh, communication, has offered a free online textbook to her students, instead of a traditional printed textbook, through a new trial program Radosh was asked to test market. Juniors Lisa James and Brett Berghardt were interviewed for the story. Click here to watch the story on WFMZ online.

Faculty & Staff News An abstract by Roxana Delbene, arts and languages, entitled, “Patients’ narratives of chronic illnesses and the notion of biographical disruption” has been accepted at the Seventh Interdisciplinary Conference on “Communication, Medicine & Ethics” to be held at the Health Communication Research Centre at Cardiff University in June 2009. Accounting major Rob Ganter and Professor Bryan Dreibelbis (Business) participated in the February 25 taping of the CNBC special, “Who’s Protecting Our Money?” The show, taped at the CNBC television studio in New Jersey, featured Jim Cramer, Erin Burnett, and FDIC Chair Sheila Bair. Attendance was by invitation only. The program has aired on CNBC several times over the past few weeks.

BRAND SCENE INVESTIGATOR Heard about the Blessing Exhibit? Thank Tammy Gore, Ph.D. student and Graduate Assistant in the Holleran Center for Community Engagement, for her diligence in planning the event, getting volunteers together, and working with several departments around campus to get the word out about the event. The Blessing Exhibit will be April 21-July 31, 2009 in the Franco Library and Learning Center. Click here for more information.
