Our staff and students come from all over the world. We strive to attract, develop, reward and retain a diverse community of staff and students of the highest calibre. The Department is unique in the UK for the breadth of its coverage of Materials Science and Engineering, both by the extent of its multi-disciplinary approach and by the range of materials covered in teaching and research. Formal qualifications of our academic staff include Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as Physics and Mathematics, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Departmental Representative The Staff-Student Committee is a forum in which students can raise points of concern, make suggestions and get responses from staff regarding the undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses. It meets twice a term in the autumn and spring terms and once in the summer term. The committee is normally chaired by a student representative and is composed of academic staff from the teaching committee, undergraduate year representatives, the student departmental representative on the union committee, and representatives from ICT and the library. The student office administrator acts as the secretary. The student office manager and DUGS jointly prepare the agenda. There are two year representatives from the first, second and third years and one from the fourth year and student representatives for each of the Masters courses. The Staff-Student Committee meeting is immediately followed by a Teaching Committee meeting, chaired by the DUGS. At this meeting, students provide their thoughts on items on the Teaching Committee agenda, which are then considered at the next staff-only Teaching Committee meeting.

Head of Technical Support The remit of the Departmental Health and Safety Committee is to advise and assist the Head of Department in the effective discharge of his health and safety responsibilities and in this respect to: • P  romote a positive health and safety culture by, for example: – Ensuring effective communication of health and safety information. – Disseminating best practice across the Department. – On an occasional basis, conducting its own safety inspections and audits. • Monitor, review and advise on the local arrangements for the implementation of College health and safety policies, procedures and codes of practice. • Monitor, review and advise on the Department Health and Safety Risk Register, which sets out the



principal hazards and risks present in the Department. Monitor new initiatives and grant proposals being put forward by the Department, consider the health and safety implications of any new hazards which have been identified, and advise on the appropriate mitigating action. Monitor, review and advise on the induction and specialist training provided for all departmental staff, students, visitors and contractors. Monitor, review and advise on the inspection and audit programme of the Department health and safety performance, receive the resultant reports and recommend action as appropriate. Act as the departmental forum for consultation with staff and students on health and safety matters. Ensuring that there is proper coordination, cooperation and communication with other users of shared and/or adjacent space, for example through the consideration of reports from building user groups. Monitor and review the arrangements for dealing with emergencies and the provisions for emergency evacuations, evacuation drills, first aid and reporting accidents, incidents and noncompliances. Receive reports of accidents, near misses and work-related health problems and monitor follow up action as appropriate. Consider reports from trades union and employee safety representatives.

Head of Technical Support Representatives from each research theme: Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Ceramics and Glasses, Engineering Alloys, Functional Materials, Nanotechnology and Nanoscale Characterisation, Theory and Simulation of Materials. The committee aims to ensure optimal configuration of the space available to the Department. This means: For research: • A  nticipating and allocating the space requirements for new research equipment/facilities. • Anticipating and allocating the space requirements for new research labs. For teaching: • E  nsuring teaching labs and lecture theatres are fit for purpose. For the working environment: • E  nsuring office and communal areas are efficiently configured and conducive to productive working. Specific roles in relation to these aims are: • D  etermine the policy and procedure for desk allocations to postdoctoral research staff, postgraduate students, academic visitors and other fixed term research staff. This will then be implemented by the Departmental Resources Manager. • Allocate the space committee’s annual budget to small reconfiguration projects within the Department. • Ensure prioritisation of medium to large scale reconfiguration projects. These projects will then be considered by the Head of Department for inclusion in the Department’s annual budgets. • Individual committee members to act as the champion (‘key user’) in reconfiguration projects and liaise with other relevant theme members to ensure optimal layout for users and the Department.

External Advisory Panel The panel meets once a year at Imperial and its main remit is to act in an advisory role to the Head of Department, Departmental Management Committee and its subcommittees, in particular: • T  o provide advice on the structure and content of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses provided by the Department. • To provide advice on the strategic research focus of the Department.

The committee meets every month, alternating agenda items between short term and long term space considerations.

Humboldt Research Award

HIGHLIGHTS

 n unusual collaboration of Alberto A Scaccabarozzi, Dr Ester BuchacaDomingo, Dr Christoph Hellman and Professor Natalie Stingelin with Mira Calix, an award-winning composer, artist and performer who works with electronic-based music to incorporate more classical orchestration, led to the new sonic-art experience The Sun is the Queen of Torches. The piece, initiated by TEDAlbertopolis and inspired by solar powered materials (photovoltaics), was presented at the Brighton Dome in December 2013.

Professor Mike Finnis was awarded the Humboldt Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany. Humboldt Awards are granted in recognition of the lifetime achievements of an ‘internationally recognised scientist from another country, whose work has made a lasting impact on their own field and beyond, and from whom more top-class scientific achievements can be expected’.

Postdoctoral research staff highlights  r Sergio Bertazzo was a finalist in the D International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge for his image of a calcified heart valve. The competition is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the journal Science.

Dr Sergio Bertazzo received a 2014 Wellcome Image Award for a scanning electron micrograph of the surface of human heart valve (aortic valve) tissue. The awards recognise the creators of the most informative, striking and technically excellent images, as chosen by a panel of judges.

A recently established spin-out company founded by Dr Toby Basey-Fisher won £100k as a part of the 2014 OneStart grand prize to further develop a device for diagnosing anaemia, which uses optical technology. OneStart is an idea competition designed to inspire, encourage and assist the next generation of European bioentrepreneurs. The spin-out, Eva Diagnostics, was selected from over 100 competing companies.

Robert Charlton was awarded a highly competitive Imperial College PhD Scholarship to undertake a PhD in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Theory and Simulation of Materials. Recipients are amongst the highest achievers in their undergraduate cohort. Robert’s scholarship covers tuition fees and £20.2k stipend per annum for 4 years. The award demonstrates that the Faculty of Engineering recognises the integral role GTAs perform in teaching within the Faculty, offers an incentive to GTAs to strive for excellence in their teaching, provides GTAs with recognition for inclusion in their CVs and encourages GTAs to talk and think more about their approach to teaching. J oseph Steele won Best Poster Prize for his poster entitled: Zonally-distinct tissue regeneration within anisotropic articular cartilage scaffolds at the Imperial College Musculoskeletal Technology Network Meeting in April 2014. Mitch Cuddihy and Dr Saira Naeem (HexMat Programme Manager) led a group of HexMat researchers, together with Rolls-Royce Engineering Fellows David Rugg and Steve Williams, to Penwortham Primary School, Tooting, in November 2013 to run a half-day introduction to ‘How do aeroplanes fly?’ This initiates what is planned to be a long-term relationship with Penwortham to bring applied science events to primary-level pupils.

The Department was the only one in the Faculty of Engineering to hold an outreach event to celebrate the first ever National Women in Engineering Day. 30 Key Stage 3 students (aged 11 to 14) attended a full day of handson activities, reciprocal learning tasks and presentation skills all based around the contributions that women in Materials Science and engineering have made to our everyday lives. Imperial College London has long been at the forefront of excellent Outreach and Public Engagement. The aim is not only to recruit future Imperial students, but also to inspire people of all ages with science, and allow them to connect the scientific research that we do here to everyday life. As the UK Chief Scientist, Sir Mark Walport famously said, ‘science is not finished until it is communicated’.

Outreach and Public Engagement Research Council grants increasingly insist that a proportion of time is spent communicating research with the public. In May 2014 the Government launched the Your Life initiative which works towards a more diverse and genderbalanced scientific workforce, to which Imperial has made pledges. These include commitments to extending Outreach into primary schools, and holding an international conference on the teaching of science, all of which encourage the Department to do more Outreach and Public Engagement. The Department has continued with some ongoing annual schools outreach activities, such as its participation in the Headstart programme in July, which allows Year 12 and Year 13 students the opportunity to spend a week at Imperial attending lectures and taking part in labs across a range of subjects. This year, 60 students took part in the Materials Challenges offered by the Department. www.imperial.ac.uk/materials

The evaluation report supplied by Imperial Outreach shows that Materials ranked highly in enjoyment, and students found the session useful. Direct feedback from students following their session in the Department confirmed that they enjoyed the complexity of the challenge offered to them, and carrying out genuine undergraduate level materials testing. The Department has continued to work with St Paul’s School, London through our links with one of their science teachers, a former member of staff here. Through this programme, A-level students work with our undergraduate and PhD students to deliver outreach activities to younger students in their own school and neighbouring schools. It is hoped that the scheme will continue throughout the next academic year, with our students getting more involved with delivering activities. Students from St Paul’s also visited the Department and attended lectures given by a range of academics.

This year was the first year that we worked alongside other Departments on an Imperial-run Summer School. We provided a hands-on materials lab session for 20 Year 10 students on the Insights into Science and Engineering Summer School in July. The students said that they enjoyed their sessions on interesting materials, and even proposed inventing some superhydrophobic safety glasses, as the hot summer day made their protective eyewear steam up, perfectly demonstrating their new found application-driven Materials Science and engineering skills. We were also asked by Imperial Outreach to give a lecture on Materials Science and Life as a Scientist to the Future Scholars students visiting Imperial, and a skills-based session on science and engineering communication and presentation skills to 96 Year 12 students. The Department was also the only one in the Faculty of Engineering to hold an Department of Materials Annual Report 2013–14

In April, 800 Year 12 science students attended a lecture entitled Material Girl at the Institute of Education with The Training Partnership. Following the success of this, the Department has been asked to give two more lectures in the coming months to the samesized audience, extending the reach of Materials Science and Engineering to science students who are about to decide what to study at university and which university to study at. Members of the Department have also been regularly visiting their old schools and the schools of their children, attending careers conventions, giving Materials Science and

careers talks and mentoring students. Dr Sandrine Heutz ran a longer-term project funded by the Royal Society that allowed students from all ages across her children’s primary school to get involved in making some dye sensitised solar cells. The Department has been involved in a great deal of public engagement over the past year. Representatives from CASC and the Centre for Nuclear Engineering were present in the Research Zone at the Imperial Festival in May, while there were also family-friendly Material Girl demo lectures held in the Workshop Tent. Materials have also had a presence at many of the monthly Imperial Fringe events, demonstrating everything from the wonders of glass to the complex business of materials and mixology. A band formed by some of our PhD students even played in the Music Tent of the festival, powered by a fuel cell. In November, Professor Peter Haynes gave his inaugural lecture on Quantum Mechanical Simulations of Real Materials. In April, Professor Neil Alford MBE FREng gave a lecture on Graphene to the Friends of Imperial. In May 2014, the Imperial strand of the Pint of Science Festival was

held in four pubs across London, with Materials staff and students speaking at two of the four strands; Understanding our Bodies (Designing Materials to Heal) and Chemistry and Physics (Materials Discovery, and High Tech Glass). Many of our academics have also given invited and public lectures across the world, from Professor Bill Lee’s Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering lecture in February to Professor Molly Stevens’ lecture at the MRS Spring Meet in San Francisco in May. Many members of the Department have been asked to feature in media coverage of Materials Science and Engineering. Professor Neil Alford MBE FREng was involved in the science media frenzy that followed the release of the new screen on the latest Apple iPhone. Dr Suze Kundu and Dr T Ben Britton have both featured in science slots on Radio Cardiff, and Dr Paul Tangney discussed plasticity on Resonance FM. Professor Bill Lee FREng featured on Science in Action on the BBC World Service discussing the fallout from Fukushima, and Dr Suze Kundu continues to be a regular Materials Science presenter on series two of the

The Department will continue to work closely with the Media and Communications Teams at Imperial, to ensure that we are available to comment on and cover breaking news stories and share research breakthroughs and academic awards.

Discovery Channel show ‘You Have Been Warned’ and the Science Channel show ‘Outrageous Acts of Science’. While public engagement is important, it is also worthwhile engaging with government, policy makers and learned societies. Dr Suze Kundu has continued to represent the Department at events as diverse as the Government launch of the Your Life Initiative at the Science Museum, the reception for the same initiative with Liz Truss at Imperial College London, the Institute of Physics’ diversity event ‘Closing Doors’, the L’Oreal Women in Science Awards at the Royal Society, the National Women in Engineering Event at the IoM3, Parliamentary Links Day and the Royal Society’s Vision for Science and Mathematics Education. Going forward, the Department plans to increase the number of school visits, with the aim of reaching students of all ages, including more primary school students. Activities offered will highlight ties with the National Curriculum at all Key Stages, and will be dynamic enough to take into account any changes in the National Curriculum. We will also try to increase the number of students that

visit the Department through Imperial’s Summer School programmes. Due to some changes in how Outreach is carried out by Imperial, from September, Departments will have the opportunity to become more involved in the Imperialwide Outreach programme and book the Reach Out Lab, a purpose-built, wellequipped lab, for their own events during the year. Information is being gathered from academics to see how their work can be presented to a range of ages and incorporated into future activities. Academics from the Department have also been getting involved with the series of primary Outreach videos being produced for Imperial College London by TwigWorld. So far we have been involved in films about Materials Science and conservation based on the Mary Rose, and artificial photosynthesis filmed in the UK’s largest solar farm. The Graduate School offers training for PhD students to become Outreach Postgraduate Ambassadors. PhD students are being made aware of the training course associated with this, which will give them some formal training in how to communicate science effectively, and

can also count towards their personal development. In addition, students from Materials will be able to access the bank of activities available through Imperial Outreach and give talks and carry out workshops, and Outreach will, in turn, be able to offer more Materials activities to schools that may not yet be aware of how much of the curriculum this can cover. The Department will continue to work closely with the Media and Communications Teams at Imperial, to ensure that we are available to comment on and cover breaking news stories and share research breakthroughs and academic awards. An Outreach plan is now in place which will ensure that the Department is represented at all the big annual science festivals and events, Imperial events and Parliamentary events, in order to continue to be a visible presence in the science communication world.

UNDERGRADUATE We have earned a reputation for excellence in undergraduate teaching. In the most recent HEFCE national teaching quality assessment, we were the only Materials department in the whole country to be awarded the maximum score across every assessment.

The theme driving continuing improvements to the already excellent teaching programme in the Department of Materials is student experience. Better use of information technology is enabling more flexible submission of course work, more rapid return of results to students and higher quality feedback.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS The labs now have the benefit of two members of staff (superdemonstrators) who are always present: they know both the students and the experiments well, and address student problems quickly and with the minimum of complexity. A new agreement has been reached with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to allow an exchange of students each year both for summer placements, and for a term of study at the start of the fourth year; what started as a Department of Materials project has rapidly gained the attention of the rest of Imperial. The Department continues to optimise its teaching environment, which has included the purchase of new equipment for the undergraduate labs. A notable new arrival is a set of high quality optical microscopes, as popular with research groups as with the undergraduates. The undergraduate programme is led www.imperial.ac.uk/materials

by the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS) with the assistance of the Senior Tutor, Teaching Committee and Student Office. Because of the importance we put on teaching through laboratory work, a new role of Laboratory Coordinator has been introduced to ensure it receives the attention it requires from an academic. The Senior Tutor is responsible for monitoring student progression and welfare, while the Teaching Committee oversees developments in course structure, admissions policy and educational strategy, and the Student Office manages all aspects of course delivery and student applications. The first two years are the same for all programmes so that everyone has a rigorous background in the essential ideas that underpin the whole of Materials Science and Engineering, which includes business and communication skills. The students can change programmes at any stage until the end of their second year. Teaching occurs through lectures, feedback sessions, computing classes, tutorials and laboratory work. scheduled approximately 21 hours of contact per week and expected to spend considerable additional time reading, preparing for tutorials/workshops and writing laboratory reports: activities they are encouraged to do in groups where appropriate. One of the favourite second year exercises is the group case study, where each group is assigned an artefact (i.e. a kettle, toaster, golf club, etc.) and is expected to dismantle it, assess the design and function of each individual component, and then conduct tests to identify the material and production method used. In the third and fourth years, students are expected to take greater control of their studies. The only core lecture course in year three is concerned with materials characterisation and is supported by a series of laboratory sessions at which the students have an opportunity to use the excellent characterisation instruments available in the Department. The third year students are also offered a range of eight electives from the Department, spanning the research interests of the academic staff, plus a number of additional electives in Business or Humanities, from which they must choose five in which to be assessed. They are also expected to complete an individual

Literature Survey, a good opportunity both to refine their writing skills and to get to grips with the scientific literature, and a Group Design Study. In the latter exercise, the team of students independently plans how to address a design brief, including how to acquire the knowledge needed to carry out the design, how to organise the work as a team effort and how progress will be monitored. In addition to technical content, the final report is expected to contain a business plan for commercialisation of the design which must manage the Intellectual Property rights and ensure Quality Assurance is taken care of. In June of the third year, the BEng students, with the exception of those on the Year Abroad programme, graduate, whilst those on the MEng programme go off to spend their summer on placement. Details of placements conducted in the summer of 2014 are listed on the right. In parallel, they attend lectures and are assessed on four electives from the Department or from a wide selection of courses offered throughout the Faculty of Engineering.

Typically, there are over 150 postgraduate research students in the Department of Materials studying for higher degrees. We give each of these students a very high quality research training experience on a topic of societal importance that is relevant to the needs of end users. POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH We are keenly focused on ensuring that our students have all the technical and transferable skills that end users are looking for. As a result, our graduating research students are eminently employable and are in great demand in a variety of sectors including the academic sector, industry and commerce. In recent years, well over 90% of students have completed their theses within four years, and the great majority publish at least some of their work in leading peer review journals in their disciplines. The research projects on offer allow them to study the relationship between microstructure, processing and properties of key materials. Thus they can improve the chemical, physical and engineering processes by which materials may be produced. These objectives are supported by world-class facilities in the areas of surface analysis and surface science (SIMS, LEIS and XPS), transmission and scanning electron microscopy, mechanical testing, electrical characterisation and X-ray diffraction. The broad range of postgraduate projects available is based around six core themes depending on the type of materials being studied: Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering,

The MSc in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering is a course offered by the Department of Materials to be completed over one year of full time study. This MSc is a stand-alone qualification designed to prepare students to solve problems in Materials Science and Engineering under the exacting conditions we encounter today. The Biomaterials stream focuses on the design and synthesis of new materials that will be used as implants or prostheses. Key to implant development is the understanding of how the material design affects biological response. An example is total joint replacement: understanding materials selection and properties and the advantages and disadvantages of their use and long term effects. Another example is the design of temporary templates (scaffolds) that can act as guides for tissue repair and can signal stem cells depending on their surface chemistry and topography. Depending on their design, materials can be degradable, can stimulate tissue growth at the cellular level and can release drugs at controlled rates. The MSc in Nuclear Engineering is a course being offered by the Department of Materials to be completed over one year of full time study that commenced in October 2010. The course is aimed at a new generation of engineers with the intention of ensuring they are equipped with specific nuclear training to satisfy the demands of the nuclear industry. The course covers all major aspects of the nuclear industry from the design and build of nuclear power stations and their operations through to decommissioning and final disposal. Centres for Doctoral Training

The Department is involved in many of the Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) at Imperial College London. Of the twelve CDTs awarded to Imperial, the Department leads the following three: Nuclear Energy, Theory and Simulation of Materials and Advanced Characterisation of Materials. Each of these has a strong component of industry funding, and is collaborative with colleagues in other departments and universities, providing inter- and multidisciplinary depth. ICO Centre for Doctoral Training in Nuclear Energy

The Imperial, Cambridge and Open University (ICO) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Nuclear Energy will enable future reactors to be developed, new reactors to be built and operated more safely and current reactors to operate for longer. At the same time, ICO research will support the clean up and decommissioning of the UK’s contaminated nuclear sites and moves towards Geological Disposal in the UK and worldwide. ICO research aims to place the UK at the forefront of international programmes on future reactors for electricity and civil marine power. By doing so, it will provide highly skilled and trained cohorts of PhDs with a global

vision and international outlook for the UK nuclear industry, regulators, government and academia. The CDT will train 62 PhD students in five cohorts and is sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and the nuclear industry and international partners. The programme involves a one year MSc in Nuclear Engineering at Imperial followed by three years PhD study at either Imperial, the University of Cambridge or the Open University. Students can select a PhD from the many projects covering the whole fuel cycle listed on the CDT website. The majority of projects are joint ventures with industry. Postgraduate research students length and time scales which poses some of the most challenging problems in theory and simulation. Students receive a comprehensive foundation in theoretical materials physics together with techniques for simulating materials across the wide range of length and time scales met in academic and industrial research: from electronic structure, through the nanoscale and microstructural level to the continuum. Each student undertakes a research project with at least two supervisors with complementary expertise at adjacent length scales, normally from different departments. A key emphasis of research projects will be the development and implementation of new theory and simulation tools. The twenty fourth Postgraduate Research Day took place on Monday 24 March 2014. This annual event takes the form of a oneday scientific meeting with a programme of oral presentations interspersed with poster sessions. As part of their postgraduate research training, all third year postgraduate students are required to give a fifteen-minute oral presentation on their research and second year postgraduates are required to present a poster. All members of the Department and collaborating researchers are invited to attend. The audience consists of industrial sponsors, members of academic, research, technical and administrative staff and postgraduate as well as final year undergraduate students. The aims of the day are: t o train postgraduates in the important transferable skills of oral and poster presentation t o inform postgraduates and other members of the Department of the wide range of research being carried out in the Department to inform final year undergraduates of interesting research possibilities in the Department

t o help create a ‘close-knit postgraduate community’. This year, the presentations covered a wide range of areas including: Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Ceramics and Glasses, Engineering Alloys, Functional Materials, Nanotechnology and Nanoscale Characterisation and Theory and Simulation of Materials, reflecting the diverse research being carried out in the Department. The standard of both the presentations and the posters gets better every year; testament to the professionalism of the students and their supervisors as well as to the GSEPS training courses that they attend. The presentations given on the day are listed below. Overall, the standard was that of a professional meeting. At the end of the day, it is a tradition that members of the audience participate in judging panels to award prizes for all aspects of postgraduate performance. Postdoctoral research staff

There are currently over 100 research assistants, postdoctoral research associates and postdoctoral research fellows working on a wide range of projects in the Department of Materials. The majority are embarking on careers in academia and are developing their autonomy as researchers in their respective fields. The Department of Materials assists in the development of its postdoctoral staff by encouraging them to take on a number of responsibilities related to both research and teaching, including: writing papers, giving presentations, reviewing publications, mentoring younger researchers, and assisting with teaching undergraduates. Additionally, postdoctoral staff may undertake some form of teaching or student supervision. The Postdoc Development Centre at Imperial is also committed to supporting our postdocs by providing a range of courses and development events, a series of publications and one-to-one coaching. The number of research assistants and postdoctoral research staff in the Department has increased steadily over the past few years as the figures in the following table indicate. The table summarises this information for the past three years: Session

Postdoctoral Research Symposium

The 4th Postdoctoral Research Symposium took place on 29 January 2014. This annual event acts as a forum for postdoctoral staff to interact with other researchers, members of the Department as well as event sponsors. The research associates have an excellent opportunity to share and present their research, which helps to foster new collaborations within the Department and enables the development of additional transferable skills. The half-day programme commenced with a welcome by Professor Neil Alford MBE FREng, Head of Department, followed by Sam Keltie, an event sponsor, who introduced the new Royal Society of Chemistry journal, Material Horizons. Dr Liz Elvidge, Head of the Postdoc Development Centre, then gave an overview of the Postdoc Development Centre and the range of resources available for postdoctoral staff. Eight scientific presentations were given by postdoctoral research staff, followed by a poster session and drinks reception. The oral session highlighted the breadth of research being undertaken within the Department and gave an

overview of the techniques, equipment and expertise available to the Materials postdoc community. The postdocs also made excellent use of the poster session to present their work, exhibiting more than 30 posters. Researchers, academics and sponsors shared a drink before all the participants gathered for closing remarks and the prize award ceremony. The judging committee comprised both academics and external guests including representatives from Nature Materials, Materials Horizons, Lenton, Concept Scientific Instruments (CSI) and the Postdoc Development Centre. Prizes were awarded for Best Oral Presentation (first and second place) and Best Poster (first and second place). Overall, the 2014 symposium was a great success. Participation by far exceeded any previous event and attracted postdocs, academic staff, postgraduate students and external company representatives and sponsors. The Department of Materials is grateful to the Postdoc Development Centre and to Lenton, CSI, Nature Materials and Material Horizons for their generosity in sponsoring the Postdoctoral Research Symposium prizes.
