Kemampuan suatu terapi antimikrobial sangat bergantung kepada obat, pejamu, dan agen penginfeksi. Namun dalam keadaan klinik hal ini sangat sulit untuk diprediksi mengingat kompleksnya interaksi yang terjadi di antara ketiganya. Namun pemilihan obat yang sesuai dengan dosis yang sepadan sangat berperan dalam menentukan keberhasilan terapi dan menghindari timbulnya resistansi agen penginfeksi. 4. 4. Antibiotik adalah segolongan senyawa, baik alami maupun sintetik, yang mempunyai efek menekan atau menghentikan suatu proses biokimia di dalam organisme, khususnya dalam proses infeksi oleh bakteri. Literatur lain mendefinisikan antibiotik sebagai substansi yang bahkan di dalam konsentrasi rendah dapat menghambat pertumbuhan dan reproduksi bakteri dan fungi. Berdasarkan sifatnya (daya hancurnya) antibiotik dibagi menjadi dua: 1. Antibiotik yang bersifat bakterisidal, yaitu antibiotik yang bersifat destruktif terhadap bakteri. 2. Antibiotik yang bersifat bakteriostatik, yaitu antibiotik yang bekerja menghambat pertumbuhan atau multiplikasi bakteri. 5. 5.
