Georgia’s Mountain Regions- Cumberland/Appalachian Plateau, Ridge and Valley, and Blue Ridge Georgia has mountains that can be divided into 3 regions: the Cumberland/Appalachian Plateau, the Ridge and Valley, and the Blue Ridge. The Cumberland/Appalachian Plateau is located in northwest Georgia. The Ridge and Valley region is located in north central Georgia. The Blue Ridge region is located in north east Georgia. Each region has a special environment. The Cumberland/Appalachian Plateau is the smallest region. It has flat tops. There are caves. The caves are underground, have water running through them, and interesting animals. There are fish, salamanders, and crawfish that are blind. Some don’t have eyes and their skin is white because of pigment loss. There are bats. Both the Gray Bat and the Indiana Bat are endangered. The Zigzag Salamander and the Green Salamander live in the forest and around the caves. The Common Map Turtle lives in this region too. It eats snails and crayfish located in this region. The Ridge and Valley region has rivers and forests. Many animals live here. Some of them are: Pine Woods Tree Frog, Gopher Frog, Hognose Snake, Chicken Turtle, Squirrel Tree Frog, and the Oak Toad. The Burrowing Crayfish lives here and burrows down into the mud and stays. These crayfish can burrow over 10 feet deep! The Blue Ridge is where Brasstown Bald Mountain is located. This is the highest point in Georgia. The forest are home to the Sugar Maple, Buckeye, and the Umbrella Big Leaf Trees. There are wildflowers named Dutchman’s Britches and Yellow Lady Slipper. Wild Ginseng grows here and is used for medicines. There are Black Bears that weigh up to 500 pounds! There are birds called the Wood Warbler and the Golden Winged Warbler. These birds migrate in the Fall and return in the Spring. In the rivers, live Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout. Many people visit the mountain regions of Georgia. They come to hunt, fish, hike, and camp.
