Dear Readers,

There is a saying: health is a state of body; wellness is a state of being. This month we take a closer look at wellness and what it means to be in a state of well-being. Let’s start with physical health in our suite of health talks at the public libraries. Find out how you can make the most of a healthy diet and a strong immune system in Winning the War on Cancer – Prevention through Nutrition and UP Your Level of Antioxidants. Then, learn the basics of good oral care in 5 Biggest Dental Problems for People over 40, and the importance of maintaining good cardiovascular health in Management of Hypertension. Of course, mental health is just as important as physical health. Learn to spot the warning signs of elderly depression in the Golden Series Support Group – Depression in the Elderly. Clear your head from everyday troubles by practising mindfulness – or being fully present in the moment – in the Mindfulness & Stress Management Talk. Get the full details of all our health programmes on pages 10 and 11. Stay healthy and see you at the libraries!

Existentialism and Excess: The Life and Times of Jean-Paul Sartre

BOOK REVIEW

E

xistentialism is a philosophy that is relatively modern. Although claims can be made to the origins of existentialist philosophy in the thoughts of ancient philosophers, existentialism as a coherent philosophy, sprang to life from 19th- and 20th-century philosophers such as Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. It is true that there are wide-ranging disagreements among existentialists such that Christians such as Kierkegaard and atheists such as Nietzsche are recognised as existentialist philosophers. The basic foundation of existentialism is not shaken by the opposing views of those two, and that is the belief that existence precedes essence. No one explores the depth and scope of this theme better and more persistently than Jean-Paul Sartre. There have been some fine biographies of Sartre, for example, Annie Cohen-Solal’s Jean-Paul Sartre: A Life (2005 New Press), and Thomas Flynn’s Sartre: A Philosophical Biography (2014 Cambridge University Press). This 311-page book by Gary Cox is a handy, easy-to-read introduction to Sartre and his philosophy. It sets out to show how Sartre, true to his philosophy, “made himself out of nothing”. Cox brings us to the early life of Sartre and the place that we have come to associate with him (and vice versa) – Paris. Sartre was born on 21 June 1905. He was not at all close to his father or his side of the family, but he was close to his mother, a “Schweitzer” and that side of the family that included Albert Schweitzer, Sartre’s cousin.

Gary Cox 2016 Bloomsbury Academic Coming to libraries this month

Sartre was a precocious child and reader. He was a leader among his peers in spite of his seemingly physical frailty and poor physique. It may thus be a matter of some surprise that Sartre grew to have strong sexual stamina and developed a personality that women found attractive. Cox describes Sartre’s early unusual romances including the tripartite affair with Olga Kosakiewicz who was a pupil of Sartre’s girlfriend Simone de Beauvoir. The episode is reflected in one of de Beauvoir’s novels, She Came to Stay. Some say that Sartre effectively disproved the theory that three’s a crowd. His infatuation with Olga had some unintended comic moments including a period where he tried to turn her into a philosophy teacher when she thought her calling was to be a waitress. When World War II came, Sartre found himself in a dilemma. He could see what was happening to the Jews, but could not push himself to do more in keeping with the philosophy that he was developing about that time. His great thesis encapsulated in Being and Nothingness was published in 1943. This 650-page book remains unreadable especially to people unfamiliar with philosophy. Before that, he was gathering material from his days as a prisoner of war for his trilogy, Roads to Freedom, comprising, The Reprieve, Troubled Sleep, and Iron in the Soul. In those times of meagreness and want, Sartre was able to focus on higher thoughts, which, in turn, made him disgusted with the animalistic behaviour of some of the other prisoners who let their dignity be trodden under hardship. And through all that time he managed to keep in touch with de Beauvoir through postcards and scraps of smuggled notes.

Cox describes Sartre’s friendship with another giant of existentialism – Albert Camus. Sartre had written a highly positive review of Camus’ The Outsider. The more politically experienced Camus grew disillusioned with communism and revolutionary violence as Sartre was getting more left-wing. A major spat broke out between these two friends over Camus’ accusation of Merleau-Ponty’s sympathy for the Russian communists in the Moscow Trials of 1936-1938. The two men were later to end their friendship in a blaze of public feud. Ultimately, Merleau-Ponty and Sartre came to the realisation that Stalinism was no different from fascism. Fully aware that Albert Camus has a cult following of his own, Cox writes of the great intellectual bust-up and answers some anticipated questions thus:

Sartre declined the honour because the Nobel award conflicted with his political and personal philosophy. As Cox writes, “he did not want the label ‘Nobel Prize Winner’ attached to all he had achieved and all he might achieve, as though his life’s work had been to that end. He had repeatedly cast aspersions on the idea of literary monuments. The last thing he wanted was to become a living literary monument himself.” On 15 April 1980 Sartre, weakened by a long illness, ceased to exist. His works are still alive.

The Alexandrian

[Who] is the greatest, Sartre or Camus? Sartre’s own more subtle vanity gives us the answer perhaps: Camus did not write “Being and Nothingness” and Sartre did. And if Sartre’s insinuations are to be believed, Camus never read it either. Is “The Stranger” superior to “Nausea”? I do not think so, but you may have been persuaded otherwise. Camus is not the greatest of the existentialists – he rejected the label anyway – but if it is any consolation, and it would have certainly have been a consolation to him, he is certainly the coolest. Too cool for school, in Sartre’s far from humble opinion. Yet Camus received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957, way before Sartre’s nomination was announced in 1963. But

BOOK REVIEW

T

his novel runs for 635 pages but it can take less than two days to read if one does not put it down. Not many who have started will put it down. Superintendent Yoshinobu Mikami is the Press Director at the Administrative Affairs Department of the Prefecture D Regional Police Headquarters. This Prefectural HQ has two main departments. Administrative Affairs is one. The other is the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) which has two divisions – the 1st Division and the 2nd Division. Mikami once worked as a detective in the 2nd Division of the CID. There, he met Minako, a policewoman and married her. They have a daughter, Ayumi. The story begins with the disappearance of Ayumi. She leaves home and does not return. She has not been coping with life because she believes that she is ugly. Adding to the stress of losing his daughter, Mikami is also under pressure at work because journalists from the 13 newspapers in the prefecture have got wind of a serious accident in which a young woman had knocked down an old man. They are hoping to get the name of the woman but Mikami’s boss, Akama, directs that the name must not be disclosed. The story which is a routine one then becomes a dramatic struggle between the Press Club (comprising the 13 newspapers) and the police, fronted by Mikami. The most outspoken member of the Press Club is Akikawa of The Toyo. The police are trying to keep from the press the fact that the old man died a few days after the accident. The more serious cover-up is the fact that the driver is the daughter of a prominent

person who sits on the prefecture’s Public Safety Committee. The press is so upset that, led by Akikawa, they decide to boycott the police. The boycott could not have come at a worse time. The Commissioner General from Tokyo announces that he would be visiting the Prefectural HQ. He would also pay respects at the shrine of a young girl named Shoko, and interview her father, Amamiya. Fourteen years ago, Shoko then aged seven, was kidnapped. The kidnapper demanded a ransom and gave directions as to how the money was to be delivered. This involved a complicated route that ended with the kidnapper instructing Amamiya to throw the money placed in a bag into a river. The money was retrieved by the kidnapper, but Shoko, was never delivered back to her parents, Amamiya and Toshiko. She was killed by the kidnapper. All that happened in the last days of the 64th year of the Showa Dynasty, thus giving rise to the code name 64 for the crime that the police have been unable to solve. The Commissioner’s visit is ostensibly a public relations exercise to placate the public and Amamiya (whose wife Toshiko has since died); assuring that the police would solve the case and apprehend the criminal before the 15-year limitation under Japanese law confers immunity from prosecution to the kidnapper. Unknown to Mikami, there are undercurrents and an internal plot. There are some in the prefecture who do not want the Commissioner General to visit. What announcement is he going to make during his visit? Some suspect bad

news for the Prefectural HQ. Mikami is asked to sound out Amamiya and obtain his consent for the Commissioner to light some incense at Shoko’s grave, visit Amamiya at his home and have an interview with him. To Mikami’s surprise and horror, Amamiya declines. What has caused the breach between Amamiya and the police in the intervening 14 years? The clue is to be found in the morning when the kidnapper called to give instructions regarding the ransom. The police Home Team comprised four officers – Urushibara, Kakinuma, Koda, and Hiyoshi. They were setting up a tape recording to capture the kidnapper’s voice. But something happened that was not generally known at the time. And now, in his endeavour to persuade Amamiya to agree to see the Commissioner General, Mikami starts digging for the truth. He interrogates various officers who were involved 14 years ago. He finds out that there was a memo written by Koda shortly after Shoko was killed. Mikami thus interrogates Urushibara and Kakinuma to find out what this ‘Koda memo’ is. He wants to question Koda about the memo, but Koda has left the police and no one knows where he has gone. When Mikami finds Hiyoshi’s home, a greater surprise awaits him. Hiyoshi’s mother tells Mikami that Hiyoshi has locked himself in his room for the past 14 years since Shoko was killed. Why is that? Is it his fault? What did he do – or did not do? In the meantime, Minako receives two anonymous calls and the caller hangs up each time after she asks who he is. Then the caller makes a third call. This time Mikami answers. The line goes dead, and after that there are no

more calls. Minako believes that it was Ayumi, their daughter, who called and that she wanted to hear her father’s voice. Were the calls from Ayumi? The story reaches its high point when another girl is reported kidnapped. The kidnapper contacts her family in exactly the same way the kidnapper 14 years ago did with Amamiya. This story fulfils the publisher’s claim that it is “[t]he nightmare no parent could endure. The case no detective could solve. The twist no reader could predict”.

This, despite the fact that merely two centuries ago, less than three per cent of the world’s population were city dwellers. This guidebook by acclaimed scholar P.D. Smith takes a fascinating look at the history and development of cities, as well as the culture and lifestyle of urbanites. Discover what has drawn people since ancient times to live in cities, notwithstanding the often high death and crime rates. M Train Author: Patti Smith Publisher: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2015 Call No.: Adult Lending English 782.42166092 SMI - [ART]

M Train is an autobiography of Patti Smith – legendary writer, singersongwriter and “Godmother of Punk”. It is also a journey, with each of its 19 chapters representing a different “station” in her life. Set mostly in recent years, the chapters weave between the past and present, New York City (where she currently resides) and her travels within the United States and overseas, dreams and reality. Amidst musings on her trips and reminiscences of her late husband and early childhood, Smith also talks about her favourite books, authors and TV detective dramas. Reading M Train feels like spending a dream-like afternoon with the author in a cafe. If you are a Patti Smith fan or an armchair traveller who enjoys – among other activities – pilgrimages to the graves of different writers, this book is for you. Contributed by Norlizah Mohd Juffri

A Family Portrait Author: Lin Yang Publisher: Singapore: Ethos Books, 2015 Call No.: Adult Lending Singapore Collection English LIN

“You always complain about things that happened before we were born. Why are you living in the past?” Fan believes that she has already left her unhappy past – her bad-tempered grandma, unloving parents and a socialist society – behind in a small village in China; having migrated to Singapore 10 years ago. However, when she receives news of her grandma’s death, she has no choice but to go back and challenge her family’s deeply-ingrained beliefs. Author Lin Yang unfolds the contrasting ideologies and landscapes between China in the past and present-day Singapore, as she delicately weaves a moving tale from the stories of two generations of women in Fan’s family and the journey of Fan, a restless young woman who is constantly in search of true love. This is a crisp and stimulating novel that instantly delves into the innermost feelings of the modern woman towards marriage and her purpose in life. It is also an inspiring read for someone who wishes to reconnect with his/her family roots. Contributed by Tan Xiu Fang

The Intern Publisher: Burbank, CA: Warner Home Video, 2016 Call No.: AV English 791.4372 INT - [ART]

“Love and work, work and love, that’s all there is,” muses 70-year-old retired Ben Whittaker, in the opening scene of The Intern. But, is that really all there is to life? Weary of his new humdrum lifestyle, Ben heads back to the corporate world as a senior intern at an online fashion start-up founded by Jules Ostin. As fate would have it, Ben is assigned to shadow Jules’ every movement, much to her initial annoyance. While Ben is a man’s man who generously offers sage advice, Jules displays a classic Type A personality – highly-driven and uptight. Nevertheless, the mismatched pair eventually realise that they have much to benefit from each other’s life experiences and their friendship. The compelling performance of the leading duo succeeds in propelling the simple storyline forward. While The Intern is certainly not the stuff of deep philosophy, it is a likeable comedy with a lot of heart to it. Contributed by Idzhana Kailani

Raffles Library and Museum, 1890s This 1890s photograph from G.R. Lambert & Co. has a handwritten note “Museum Singapore (Orchard Road)” on the front. The photograph shows a view of the original 1887 front block of the Raffles Library and Museum, at Stamford Road. The design was guided by the Renaissance principles of balance and symmetry. The building rises out of a ground floor with a rusticated base, repetitive pilasters in the Ionic order alternating with window pediments topped by a roof parapet with decorative finials and a vaultless single-span dome. Today, this building is known as the National Museum of Singapore. Visit eResources.nlb.gov.sg/pictures for more images of Singapore!
