Yet, initially, no youth or creative industry representatives were invited to this event.

On 12-13 July 2012, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Ministry of Education and Culture, and the East Java Regional Government organized a workshop on art and culture in Hotel Majapahit, the most distinguished heritage—and perhaps also the most expensive—hotel in Surabaya.

All heads of Taman Budaya, as well as Culture and Tourism Board from over 27 provinces in Indonesia, were invited for this workshop. One of the main objectives was to reactivate and to revive various, oft-neglected, Taman Budaya in Indonesia. It aims to rejuvenate Taman Budaya with more diverse events and programs, that’ll hopefully involve youths, creative industry sectors, and thus revitalize it as a hub for arts and cultural activities.

What was peculiar, however, not a single youths, creative industry business or community representative was initially invited to this event. (Check out the invitation.) Gustaff H Iskandar from Common Room (Bandung) as the assessor team then had to—at the very last minute—invited us to at least watch and be involved in this dialogue.

Left: Gustaff, Dr. Mari Elka Pangestu, dan Ukus Kuswara. Right: Photo session, the usual.

The highlight of day one was a presentation by Dr. Mari Elka Pangestu about Indonesia Kreatif as the main program of the Indonesian creative economy development. (Do read the PDF, available for download online: rencana pengembangan industri kreatif menuju visi ekonomi kreatif 2025.) Sorry we couldn’t get the powerpoint slides, but we managed to capture almost all of them on photos. We’ve compiled them as PDF, available for free download. Common Room folks had also generously shared their own draft, which contains plenty of similar slides. Many questions were raised, from the most general such as, how the government is going to achieve these grand but seemingly abstract plans and ideas, to technical and detailed questions about new technology.

Day 2 focused on evaluating and getting an overview of the current conditions of Taman Budaya from all over Indonesia. Endo Suanda gave a presentation and overview, then Common Room folks proceeded doing a brief SWOT analysis. Imagine trying to clean up and streamline years of extremely convoluted bureaucracies, corrupt practices, and suppressed discontents from over 27 provinces with very diverse cultures, languages and degrees of technological infrastructures. Some dramas ensued, but not particularly worth elaborating here. Honestly, we were kind of intimidated with the beast that we were seeing, and were rather at loss at what we can contribute.

However, as “urban” youths, perhaps commonly associated with contemporary arts and urban culture (whatever their definitions are supposed to mean), we’d like to repudiate the clichéd presumptions that we’re not interested in Taman Budaya and (its connotated association with) traditional arts & culture. Au contraire, we like—and learn and read about —”traditional” arts & culture, but we dislike this kind of compartmentalisation of arts and culture frozen into “traditionalisation”, that refuses to let us learn and adapt them.

We are not against the government or bureaucracy, but trust is earned, not instantly given. Considering the notorious track record, we at least want information transparency and dissemination. For example, by ensuring clear and legal terms and conditions for utilising the facilities in Taman Budaya. We want clear procedures. We do not want corrupt officers or dubious charges.

And we’re not disinterested to Taman Budaya events—we just never heard of it. (Try googling Taman Budaya Jawa Timur and see that the last update on its website is 2008.) Having an active media—a regularly-updated, well-designed website integrated with social media such as twitter and facebook—where we can easily gain information about current activities is an absolute prerequisite. A monthly magazine/bulletin would be a bonus—it doesn’t have to be in colour, but must be regular and well-distributed, not stacked somewhere compiling dust waiting to catch fire. Perhaps try considering using Creative Commons BY-NC-SA as a licence.

On a brighter note, the Taman Budaya of East Java reported having no problems in terms of facilities and funding (see the post-it notes above), except for gallery and human resource regeneration. The Taman Budaya of East Java, to the best of our knowledge, boasts one of the best cultural facilities in Surabaya: an amphitheater, an auditorium with relatively good acoustics, a pendopo, rooms for visiting artists, a large parking space, and a pretty strategic location. It definitely has a lot of potentials as a hub for cultural events, residencies, etc. Overall, bearing in mind past disappointments, this is a commendable attempt that requires cautious optimism and participation.

Design It Yourself is an annual series of design events first held in October 2011 at C2O Library. For this event, we gather various parties, from small communities, business, and academics related to design, particularly in Surabaya, to together instrospect and share their stories, ideas and inspirations, about their own situations and conditions. Various design disciplines are involved, from design in general, graphic design, design business & management, fashion, digital media, comic, urban art, and urban planning were discussed in one casual talk & presentation series.

Despite being second only to Jakarta in terms of regional size and industrialisation, Surabaya, is conspicuously missing from the Indonesian national map of Creative Cities. Indeed, large regions, particularly with a large portion of working class and older industrial economy, do not usually corner the market as Creative Cities locations. If anything, it has generally been perceived that creative works, bohemian lifestyle, and fields not directly related to industrial economy do not flourish in Surabaya the “city of work”, a thriving port city long associated with migrant labors and working class.

For this event, we will be sharing about Design It Yourself, the process of knowledge sharing, and the development of design in Surabaya.

http://diy.c2o-library.net/2012/06/presentasi-diy-dikunci-cultural-studies-center/feed/ 0 Report: DIY Talk #3: Graphic & Branding http://diy.c2o-library.net/2011/10/report-diy-tal-3-graphic-branding/ http://diy.c2o-library.net/2011/10/reportdiy-tal-3-graphic-branding/#comments Sat, 15 Oct 2011 05:54:56 +0000 Ari Kurniawan Articles http://diy.c2o-library.net/?p=1048 Discussing about the real condition and the specific potential of Surabaya along with the practicioners in the Surabaya graphic design world can be the first step to bring the graphic design community to be more organized and also to contribute to not only the designers, but also to the public.

If we are talking about graphic design world in Surabaya, in its business scope or its creative climate, we cannot deny that there are several things that we have to fix together. In the effort to fix them, firstly there is no constant need for thoughts that compare Surabaya with Bandung, Jakarta, Jogja, and other cities in Indonesia since Surabaya has its own problem and its own history.

Discussing about the real condition and the specific potential of Surabaya along with the practicioners in the Surabaya graphic design world can be the first step to bring the graphic design community to be more organized and also to contribute to not only the designers, but also to the public. For our third session of DIY Talks, we tried to bring graphic designers from every sector, such as, public sector, corporation sector, community sector, typography, and also street art to become the speakers. They are Bayu Prasetya (graphichapter), Jimmy Ofisia (MAM), Iko (ikiiko), Obed Bima (DKV Petra), and Bing Fei (Veith Design).

The speakers are invited to share their experiences and how they see the graphic design world in Surabaya, not only for the other designers but also students and peoples who come. The problems mentioned and discussed in that night were broad, but are all concrete issues that happen in Surabaya. The basic issue mentioned was about social responsibility—although a cliché, it will always be one of the main issue to discuss, especially in the context and experience of Surabaya local designers.

For Obed, without ignoring the old generation, he considered the young generation is to be more open minded at the social knowledge. Bayu agreed to it, saying that graphic design world is more open-minded and optimistic now. “When we are talking about the graphic designers right now, there are many and more that care about the social problem). The young generations, especially when I go to college, the students now not only give attention on the message issue but also the sustainable media”, said Bayu. Quoting David Berman, he also said that designer him/herself should not only think about do good design but also do well for anything.

Jimmy viewed that there are some ethic problems, if we do something bad, we should do something good as well. He mentioned some of examples of designers association who understand about this problem and then make the efforts to do something for various issues, such as the climate change, social issues, the image of woman, etc. He said, “We have to look at their own personality, whether they want to keep making garbage or they want to make garbage but also make something good too,”.

Bing Fei also said,” We as designers are part of the agent of change, everything we do will always have impact, so we have to do it sincerely”. He added that designer is in the right place, because designer is in the position of giving solution. Bing Fei also said about giving view and her hopes to fix many conditions, so the right thing is to start do the right thing is everything”, said Bing Fei. Bing Fei also gave his view and his hope for the young designers to start doing the right thing. “If from early on we start with the will to improve the situation, then the right moment is at the very beginning, because doing the right thing from the very beginning is everything”, said Bing Fei.

The issue of designer’s responsibility is developing into the collaboration issue in the design disciplines. On the discussion that night, collaboration issue is not only lingering in the collaboration between designers, but also collaboration between designer and client in mutual relationship. There was also a long discussion in that night, when Phoebe, one of the audience, voiced out critics about designers. Phobe said that designers should take a bigger part in pushing the clients to a better direction, rather than becoming a mere tool of the producer in “duping” the customers. Phoebe also seconded Bing Fei’s statement, she also said that designer has the power to do it.

Bayu also said, in the reality there is always a compromise between the designer and the client. He gave an example about the case of using recycled paper. As a designer, he has the initiative to suggest to the client to be more environmentally friendly in doing his business. However, from the client’s side, recycled paper is much more expensive on the production, so compromise is the thing that happened. Kat, the owner of C2O library, added, “the negotiation process with the client will always happen and as a designer, we can always choose, be tactical, perhaps by doing other projects that we desire.”

For Obed, who likes the street art, negotiation will always happen. “Idealistic ideas, but realistic actions” was how Obed defined his art works. He added, “we know one paint is good and bright, but isn’t environmentally friendly because of the high chemical substances. But if I use another paint, the cost will rise, but it environmentally friendly. We will finally arrive at a point where we will have to swith to the more environmentally friendly paint althought it was not as bright in colors as the first one. But the most important thing is we have to keep walking, because every time we are doing mural, we bring people to the different directions and we are not only doing “damages.”

Bayu, who has been involved in several, public sector projects, said that there are some real things that can be done by designers who wants to do something good. “We have the capacity, are confident, and we can, from the business aspect and actually even when we are talking about power. At this moment, as a designer, we are really strong.”, he said while he described about the Graphic Design Environmental project from GraphiChapter in Taman Jayengrono. He is aware that graphic design shouldn’t only focus on the visual problem, that there is a need in multidimensional model of thinking. He stated that now there are potential for designers to contribute more for the city. Because of the situation now, when we are talking about the image of the city, Surabaya is not well synchronized with its strategy. Bayu also asked all of designers to contribute for the city government, because at least presently, the city government is really open and support designers if they come and bring solutions that are supportive to the ideas and solutions brought by the designers.

As an addition, Bayu also emphasized a few things about the cooperation with government. For example, there is no clear functions and job fields listed in Surabaya government in relation to design. Another one thing that can be the homework for the graphic design world in Indonesia is how graphic designer in Indonesia has still not received admittance as a legitimate profession in the government world, unlike other more mature fields such as architecture. As Bayu said, this condition is making it difficult for graphic designer who wants to to contribute in public sector in cooperation with the government.

Another interesting thing was how each designer conveyed their creative processes. Iko shared his creativity process, how he started strategically and with the most basic common sense in his response to a brief, especially in relation to competitions. This is also a positive point from an event like this, because from this event there will be sharing of ideas and creative processes between the designers themselves, it can enrich their knowledge and their perspectives too.

The details in the business of graphic designer were also discussed, because the designers were sharing about this problem directly. Some of the things that got the enthusiasm from people who attended the event that night were when the designers explained about negotiation techniques and how to communicate with client. Bing Fei and Bayu who have their own studio without hesitation shared their methods and ways to deal with their clients. Iko who represented the freelancer was not embarrassed when he shared about his knowledge and his own experience. It was interesting to notice, how every speakers and designers who presented that night have their own methods in determining their fee and price. Many new knowledge and suggestions about sharing about management problems and exchanged information were exchanged.

From the discussion about the real condition that night, at least there were some important points which can be categorized as challenges and suggestions for graphic design community in Surabaya. At the field, the issue of communication with client, cross-media thinking, and about how communities who are not used to meet each other, the issue about internal collaboration and between the institutions and also government, it will be these are common that can be further elaborated to find their solutions. Another important topic that was discussed was those that were relating to technical matters, such as pricing, business management and managerial skills. These are topics that may need more emphasize in the education world, as it is important to prepare graphic design students for the real world.

As a final conclusion), quoting what was said by Andriew, one of the moderator that night, to fix things up, as a designer, we have to think (about) the infrastructure as a whole. Designer is not limited to taking care of the visual problem, but we can also do other things in order to build the infrastructure to head a better way. This will need a lot of contribution from all. This is the right time.

DIY Screening: Beautiful Loser
19.30-21.00 | Documentary | 2009 | Duration 90 min

Pak Waw mengaku selalu suka komik, apa saja tipenya.
