It is always a busy time for the arts and the next few months prove to be no exception at Huntington Arts Council. Our Get with the Program[s] professional development for artists returns with four varied events (see page 8). Please register early and take advantage of these terrific opportunities to expand your artistic horizons. The Creative Communities grants program will be wrapping up the panel stages of funding, and the announcement of those applicants who were successfully funded will be available shortly. We continue to partner with NYSCA on this valuable program, and are always proud to help artists and organizations to bring art to their local communities. Two anonymous donors stepped forward to help us through their generosity. One made a $5,000 challenge to us for our yearend appeal. I am happy to report that

Main Street Gallery 213 Main St., Huntington Hours: Mon. - Fri. 9am - 5pm Sat. 12pm - 4pm 631.271.8423 Arts Cultural News is published three times a year by the Huntington Arts Council, Inc. and is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs, the Town of Huntington, corporations, foundations and individuals. The Arts Council gratefully acknowledges the support of Town Supervisor Frank Petrone and Council members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan Berland, Eugene Cook, Tracey Edwards and the Suffolk County Delegation of the New York State Assembly and Senate and the Suffolk County Council members.

we have successfully met the challenge through your generosity, and have received the matching funds. The yearend appeal was extremely successful and is one step towards meeting our fundraising goals to continue our artistic efforts. Another donor offered to pay to have the floor of our Main Street Gallery refinished. The gallery looks spruced up, and is a fitting showcase for all of the fine artwork on display. As always, we have an exciting and diverse Exhibition Program in place for the next several months, including juried, student and invitational shows. Please see pg 9 for details and exhibition dates for the Exhibition Program and stop by often to view the works on display. The activities continue, with more to come. Please continue to check our website for updates and reminders. As always, our members are the backbone of Huntington

Our 2015 Auction On Main – Annual Art Auction Fundraiser was a huge success. This year with over 50 pieces of artwork by as many artists, the support of local businesses, and friends of the Huntington Arts Council we significantly exceeded our financial fundraising goal. Taking place over a two week period in November, the event opened and closed with a gallery reception attended by artists and friends alike. It is due in part to everyone’s ongoing support of this fundraiser that we are able to bring the Exhibition Program to the community. Thank you!

Letter From The Supervisor Dear Friends: “Creative Placemaking” is a very current trend in the fields of economic development and urban planning. It is an evolving field of practice that intentionally leverages the power of the arts, culture and creativity to serve a community’s interest while driving a broader agenda for change, growth and transformation in a way that also builds character and quality of place. In many ways creative placemaking has been an approach that Huntington has employed for decades, long before it became a popular “buzzword.” We have always taken great pride in the numerous artists who have been born or nurtured within our community, and have worked to foster the sustainable growth and development of diverse arts and cultural organizations. This dynamic cultural environment has helped to give Huntington its unique identity as “Long Island’s Cultural Capital.”

Supervisor Frank P. Petrone programs, it also makes good economic sense! Studies have consistently shown that cultural activity has a very strong effect in stimulating activity in other sectors of our economy. It is encouraging to know that by embracing a vibrant cultural community as the heart of our identity, Huntington can be seen as a trendsetter! I invite you to use the information on the pages of this newspaper as your passport to become a part of Huntington’s cultural heart.

Hosting the largest concentration of cultural organizations on Long Island not only helps ensure that Huntington’s citizens have easy access to a wide variety of engaging and enlightening cultural

Boys & Girls Club of Bellport Area -The Wiz

On May 15, 2015, Alexandra Lugten independently released her third fulllength album entitled “Year of Abandon” by playing it in its entirety for the first time at a house show in her hometown of Lindenhurst. From there, Lugten completed a thirteen performance tour across Suffolk County visiting various venues, including the likes of the Ripe Art Gallery, The Basement, The Velvet Lounge, Comiskey Park, Brew Haus, the Islip Art Museum, and two in-studio interviews and performances on Stony Brook University’s radio station, WUSB 90.1 FM.  As Lugten explains, the album “is a kneejerk emotional reaction catalogued in the muscles of our bodies, which remember the physical definition of the word from various moments in our personal histories; sometimes it is the wild impulsiveness of youth and other times it is the renunciation that causes people, places, or things to be left behind.” She is now currently self-booking a world tour, whilst in the midst of finishing her fourth album.

Both organization and artist are supported through the New York State council on the Arts (NYSCA) Long Island Decentralization Re-grant Programs administered by the Huntington Arts Council. For more information about the projects, please visit the Bellport Community Action Committee at http://www.bgcbellport. org/ and Alexandra Lugten at http://www. alexadexa.com/.
