Annual Report

Tech within Reach

Letter from Elizabeth Transformation. It’s a powerful word. As I speak with students, alumni, volunteers, partners, and funders, I often hear how Byte Back is transforming the lives of underserved DC residents.

“Byte Back has transformed the DC landscape for 18 years, positively impacting thousands of lives.”

Since becoming Executive Director in September 2015, I have been moved by the countless stories of the difference Byte Back is making. Recently, a young woman who was homeless and living in her car when she started classes said to me, “Byte Back saved my life.” Olivia is now employed, making a competitive salary, and living in her own place. Byte Back has transformed the DC landscape for 18 years, positively impacting thousands of lives – from older students who send an email for the first time to individuals who earn certifications and build meaningful careers. We continue to play a vital role in helping those most vulnerable attain economic independence and stability through digital access training and customized career pathways. This Annual Report speaks to the difference Byte Back continues to make for our students, and we are thankful to all of you for your time, talents, and financial resources. I invite you to attend student graduations, our annual Community Computer Day, donor and volunteer recognition receptions, and other events. There are also many ways that you can volunteer with our students by mentoring, tutoring, teaching classes, or providing internships or employment. Come meet students like Olivia, who works as an IT help desk professional for General Dynamics. We welcome your participation and partnership in transforming lives.

Best,

Executive Director Elizabeth Lindsey

Help Needed:

The Need for Digital Inclusion, Access, & Workplace Diversity in Washington, DC

There is still a glaring lack of racial diversity in the IT field, and there are far too many DC residents who remain unemployed and in poverty and whose lives could change with computer access and training. What Is Success? After taking a Byte Back class, students’ everyday lives are transformed by new knowledge, and careers and life paths are forever changed. This is what success looks like:

1. Changing the Day-to-Day Cleopatra Green-Clarke enrolled in Byte Back’s intermediate Office Track class to gain experience and skills with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and to boost her resume. She found an added benefit when she taught her 10-year-old son to create a multiplication table using Excel. By bringing Excel home, she achieved goals far beyond those she had set when she first enrolled in Byte Back. She will also use these skills in her career: “Every job asked me if I was proficient in Excel,” she said. “Now I can say, ‘Yes!’”

2. Opening a New Path Behrooz Bakhtiary’s job as a night concierge wasn’t enough to pay rent and feed him. And it wasn’t enough to “give the world” to his 7-year-old daughter as she battled leukeumia. “Failure is not an option” for Behrooz, and that showed as he studied in the A+ Certification Program. Motivated by his daughter, he was inspired to learn and grow and was the first in his class to pass the certification exams. He soon secured a job as a PC technician and is now so hopeful for himself and his daughter, who is now in remission. “I was able to see it – that my future was going to be different,” he said. “I really can’t thank Byte Back enough.”

3. A New Career, A New Life Betty was laid off after 14 years in a stable office job. She was in a “downward spiral” and knew that to overcome unemployment, she needed to develop her computer skills. After becoming a certified Microsoft Office Specialist in Excel, Betty was hired by a Magistrate Judge at the Superior Court of DC. She has succeeded in her new career there and even advanced since starting. “[Byte Back] lifted me up when I was at my lowest,” Betty said. 2015 Annual Report | 3

Where Are They Now? From Homelessness to Help Desk She was a cake decorator at Safeway, worked in a salon, and was a security guard, facing frequent bouts of unemployment for over 10 years. She was homeless, sleeping in her car most nights for about a year. Just a year later, Olivia Byrd has started her career at the General Dynamics IT help desk.

“After I got my [CompTia A+] certification, it was on,” she said. The offers started flooding in. “I had never experienced any learning institution like that in my life,” she said about Byte Back. It was personal, close, and they covered “every minute detail to get you on the right path,” Olivia said. “It changed my life.”

38% of FY15 Byte Back students were homeless #ByteBackGrad: Olivia Byrd with a classmate at Byte Back graduation. Since graduating, she earned her A+ certification and started her career in IT.

A homeless person is considered an individual without permanent housing.

Byte Back students work with our career services team to take their resumes, cover letters, interview skills, and soft skills from unpracticed to polished. With personalized attention and certifications in hand, graduates succeed!
