RICK RICE PARK: A GREAT COMMUNITY ASSET

(FEATURED AS FRONT COVER PHOTO) Did you know that when the weather is good that as many as 4,200 people visit Rick Rice Park each month? That’s more than 100 a day - a pretty impressive number. If you aren’t familiar with the park, we encourage you to go see it. It is located behind CrossPoint Community Church on Westgreen. You can access it via the church’s parking lot or by riding or hiking the Mason Creek trail that connects with it. The park was years in the making and had its grand opening in June of 2009. The park is an absolutely gorgeous 7-acre green space that features a central lake with a fountain that is surrounded by a walking trail. There is educational signage, inspirational artwork, a Veterans Memorial Plaza that honors all five branches of the United States military and a scenic overlook that dedicated to Can Care, a non-profit cancer support network. The story behind how the park came to be is pretty exceptional too. The park is the brainchild of the Interstate Municipal Utility District, which is a commercial MUD that represents the area from I-10 to Kingsland and from Westgreen to Mason. The MUD is governed by a very small Board of incredibly dedicated folks who have put in countless hours over many years to bring the park to fruition. (As an aside, Board members are essentially volunteers, they are paid a stipend every time they meet, but it is a paltry sum.) “It truly is a labor of love,” said Interstate MUD Board President Barry Kaplan. “We are often asked why we would build a park at all. The answer is how often do you get a chance to do something extraordinary? People often don’t understand what a park can do for a community.” Indeed, a park offers many benefits to the surrounding neighborhoods. It offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It gets people outdoors, thereby bringing neighbors and strangers together. It also makes the community a more desirable place to live, which increases home values. Kaplan loves to go to the park and ask visitors about their experiences and see if they have suggestions for improvement. One of the park designers, Tara Klein of Four & One Landscape Architecture, does the same and one day spoke to a woman who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. She said she felt God had sent her there, as she took great comfort from the supportive quotes in the Can Care overlook. In order for a park to continue to impact its neighbors in positive ways, it has to be managed correctly in terms of both maintenance and security. The MUD takes both jobs very seriously. It has hired a top of the line firm, Terry’s Landscape & Design, to handle park maintenance. The walkways are pressure washed every month; plants are replaced on a regular schedule; flags are replaced every quarter and graffiti is removed within 24 hours of the offense. In terms of security, the park is patrolled regularly by off-duty HPD officers who routinely return wallets and keys to park patrons. Some folks are so grateful that they return with a plate of cookies. The MUD also earns high marks for its willingness to work with other agencies. The Interstate MUD has financed the majority of the park, but some projects have been jointly funded in cooperation with our MUD, which is the Mason Creek MUD and Steve Radack, commissioner of Harris County Precinct 3. It should also be noted that the Interstate MUD has a great relationship with CrossPoint Community Church. It is truly heartening to see industry leaders who work so tirelessly on a project that benefits our community in so many ways. “We really are just a group of normal guys; we’re not special,” Kaplan says. “We’ve made

This park is very special to us and for some of us it will be our legacy.” Check out Francesca’s Garden Even regular park visitors may not be aware of Francesca’s Garden, which is tucked in just behind the Mann Eye Institute. Its 1.5 acres feature lush landscaping, a tiny hill (perfect for toddlers to roll on) and a small pavilion that could be used for events such as weddings and concerts. One day, the MUD plans to build out an amenity pond adjacent to the garden. The garden is available to the public on a first come, first served basis. No reservations are required. Cool park facts 1. The Texas Water Foundation gave the park the 2015 Blue Legacy Award for its water conservation efforts. A centrally controlled irrigation system saved 2.81 million gallons of water in 2015 vs. the prior year. 2. The LED lights on the bridge can change color. For example, they were blue for Taylor High School’s Homecoming weekend. 3. The park uses organic fertilizer and pesticide. 4. The park was named for Houston native Rick Rice, who spent decades as a park advocate, particularly in west Houston. 5. The alligator was not removed by park staff. It is believed he found a new home after a flooding event.

A NOTE ABOUT SWINGS

We have noticed that many homeowners have installed swings in their front yards for children to enjoy. We would just like to ask that you please install swings that are in keeping with the ambiance of our neighborhood, i.e. tire swings are probably not a good idea for the front yard. Please keep the swings in good maintenance while they are up and please remove them when they are no longer being used. It really does make our neighborhood look junky when there are dilapidated items in homeowners’ front yards. Along the same lines, please keep hammocks in the back yard. NCCIA Board of Directors

BACK TO SCHOOL POOL PARTY

NCCIA will again sponsor a Back to School Party on Monday, August 7th between the hours of 5 PM and 9 PM. Lifeguards will be on duty. Pizza will be delivered at approximately 6 PM. Last month we received/on viewed 578 calls for service. The two assault cases are family assaults, one was on Langton where a niece who has a history of drug abuse assaulted her cousin. The other one is current exboyfriend choking the complainant. He was arrested for felony assault pending breath analysis. There were also two criminal mischief reports filed. One was graffiti on a pipe and the other one was a damaged mailbox. Suspicious person/vehicle isn’t way up but just more residents calling things in. Most of them were solicitors hanging door flyers. We had two stolen vehicles reported, one Sancroft but turned out to be a repossession and the other one on Prince Creek was a repossession.

KATY ISD TEAMS RANK HIGH IN THE GLOBAL DESTINATION IMAGINATION TOURNAMENT

Three Katy ISD teams classified in the “Top 10 Teams” during the Global Destination Imagination Tournament, which took place in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 24th-28th. More than 1,400 teams representing 45 states and 14 countries competed in the event to showcase their innovative challenge solutions. In total, five Katy ISD teams attended the tournament, including students from Griffin Elementary, Hayes Elementary, Beckendorff Junior High and Katy High School. In the Improv Challenge, 3-Peat, the Katy High School “Tie Di ers” finished in 10th place. This placed them as the highest ranking team in the state of Texas, who was in attendance. Participating in the Scientific Challenge, Top Secret, the Hayes Elementary team “It’s Classified” finished in third place. The “Altos Kryptos,” from Griffin Elementary won second place in the same category.

BECK JUNIOR HIGH PTA HIGHLIGHTS THE CRITICAL ROLE OF PTA IN SCHOOLS

Contributing to your child’s PTA is essential to help the educational leadership team move forward in technology and resources and to help children get the most from their classes. Parents and other caregivers give in a variety of ways as volunteers, donors for projects and events and as resources for the school administration. In other words, PTA isn’t just one big “party planning” group. Strategic decisions are made with the cash and volunteer investments you make. On behalf of the many PTA associations in the community, thank you and please don’t stop! The association also awarded Lifetime PTA Membership Awards to Carrie Gay, Lori Schusterman and Kevin Weber. Further, it awarded a PTA Extended Service Award to Katy ISD’s School Board President, Rebecca Fox.

Third, Beck’s 8th Grade Party that took place recently was a great success. Why? With the help of community sponsors, donors and amazing volunteers, more than three hundred 8th graders had age-appropriate fun at their annual rite of passage event. Even better? The event expenses and income were managed in such a way that the 8th Grade Legacy Gift to the school was voted and approved by General Membership for the purchase of a much desired campus Golf Cart for the administration.

KATY ISD RYLANDER ELEMENTARY STUDENT SELECTED FOR LONE STAR LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Rylander Elementary student Nicole Lavrack was selected to travel this summer to Austin and San Antonio to participate in the 2017 Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. She was selected based on her outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, involvement in school and community activities, as well as her successful completion of a previous Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. Nicole joined a delegation of outstanding students to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas and its leaders. As a participant of the academy, she visited significant sites in the area, learned about future career and internship opportunities and visited with her Texas State Representative and Senator, whom are well aware of Nicole’s accomplishments. Education in Action is a non-profit organization which hosts the Lone Star Leadership Academy camp designed to empower young people to be informed and active leaders in their communities. Move over, summer - a new school year is coming! With the start of school, families face new organization challenges. School bells ring and so do early-morning alarm clocks. Paper piles swell as hand-outs and homework stream into the house. Shorter autumn days bring a hectic round of sports, activities and events and calendars fill with cryptic notes. Can the holidays be far behind? Get organized now for the best school year ever! Use these ideas to prepare your home and family for the busy days ahead. Ease the family into a school year schedule The first day of school is no time for a drastic adjustment of household sleep schedules. Instead, ease children back into a school year routine gradually. During the last two weeks of summer, re-introduce a school year bedtime. Begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, closer to the hour they’ll need to rise when school begins. Don’t neglect mealtimes! Younger children, in particular, need to adapt to new meal routines before the school day demands it of them. Plan meals and snacks to accustom little ones to rituals of the school day before the school year begins.

Create Calendar Central Each school year floats on a sea of schedules. School functions. Lunch menus. Scout meetings and music lessons. What do you do when you’re drowning in paper? Nothing calms school year chaos like Calendar Central: a centralized site for all family calendars and schedules. You’ll need a family event calendar to track after-school activities, school programs and volunteer work. Add specialized calendars and schedules and you have it, a one-stop shop for family time management. Form is less important than function. A paper calendar with large squares lets you enter information easily. Pre-printed white board calendars are easy to revise when necessary. Color-coding entries by family member helps keep busy lives straight. Paper planner fans dedicate a planner section to serve as Calendar Central, while tech-savvy cyber people store the info in a smart phone or tablet and sync with multiple computers. Choose a calendar format that works for your family. Post the family event calendar in a public place near the telephone. Use magnets to attach the calendar to the refrigerator or tack it to a bulletin board. Add other calendars to Calendar Central: school lunch menus, class assignment sheets, sports practice schedules. When the room mother calls for field trip volunteers, you’ll know at a glance whether you’re free to join the group on the bus that day. Plan before you shop August is the second-biggest sales month for clothing retailers. Back to school clothing sales begin as early as July! Are you prepared to run the school clothes gauntlet? An informed shopper is a savvy shopper, so prepare before you shop. Take an afternoon and assess each child’s clothing needs. Empty drawers and closets of outgrown or worn-out clothing and either store or donate the discards. Working with your child, clean and organize clothing storage before new garments are added - and cut down on school morning calls of “Mom! I don’t have any clean . . . .” Develop a wardrobe needs list for each child. Check for possible handme-downs from older siblings as you make your list. If you discuss the needs list and the family budget with your children before you shop, you’ll avoid in-the-store tantrums.

Similarly, ask the school for classroom supply lists before shopping for school supplies. Forewarned is forearmed ... and helps protect the family budget. Do shop early! With back-to-school sales beginning in mid-July, tardy shoppers have a tough time locating needed supplies among September’s Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations. Gather your papers School entry may require documentation from immunization records to report cards from the previous school year. Athletes need proof of medical examination. A little preparation can prevent frantic last-minute searches for a birth certificate or registration confirmation. Call your child’s school or check the school district website beforehand to find out what paperwork will be required - then find it! You won’t be sorry come registration day. Take aim on morning madness How are school mornings in your home? Crazed and chaotic or calm and cheerful? Plan ahead to send your schoolchildren - and yourself! - out the door in a happy frame of mind. Each evening, think ahead to the following morning; where can you lighten the load? Set the breakfast table as you clear the dinner dishes and make sure breakfast foods are easy to reach. Lay out children’s clothing the night before. Scan backpacks or launch pad spaces for missing homework, projects or library books. Make sure musical instruments or sports bags are packed and ready to go. Do “bathroom wars” break out daily among the small fry? Multi-child households may need a bathroom schedule so that everyone gets equal time before the mirror. What do you do about books and papers, lunch money and permission slips? Practice the Launch Pad concept! By creating a dedicated space for every family member, a Launch Pad gets the family out the door in record time - and organized. Make a practice run How will children get to school? The first day of school is no time to find out it takes ten minutes - not five - to walk to the nearest bus stop! Before school begins, make a practice run to get children to the school on time. If they’ll walk, help them learn the route they’ll take and note the needed time. Car-pooling? Make sure the dry run accounts for early-morning traffic! Bus riders will need to be familiar with the location of the bus stop; print and post the bus schedule to prevent a missed bus. Spiff up household systems A new school year quickens the tempo of family life. Sports activities, music lessons, church programs and volunteer commitments tap parental time and put new mileage on the mini-van. Get organized! They are headed to Orlando, Florida to compete in the AAU Junior National Championships. These girls have had a fun season placing 1st at Woodlands Revolution, 2nd at Katy Elite, 2nd at FAST Warmup, 5th at the Texas Fest in Dallas, 5th at the Pacific Northwest Qualifier in Spokane, WA and 9th at the Under Amour North East National Qualifier in Philadelphia. HOUSTON AREA EVENTS August 1st - September 4th - Houston Restaurant Weeks - For thousands of Houstonians and visitors to the bayou city, Houston Restaurant Weeks provides a month-long passport to the city’s top restaurants and awardwinning chefs. Houston Restaurants Weeks is run by volunteers and 100 percent of the proceeds raised from area restaurants go directly to the Food Bank. For more than four weeks, diners get to taste prix-fixe menus specially priced at $20 for lunch and $35 and $45 for dinner. In addition to the ever-expanding contribution made to the Houston Food Bank, the event has grown to include not only the trendiest eateries in Uptown Galleria, bustling downtown and vibrant Midtown, but also popular eateries in outlying communities such as The Woodlands, Sugar Land and Galveston, Texas, among others. SUMMER READING CLUBS “Build a Better World” - May 29-August 31, 2017 Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the summer to encourage reading among people of all ages. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs (SRC) and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www. fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image. When the online registration form has been completed, readers will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. Prizes must be collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is August 31st. The Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries. SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Children are encouraged to read or listen to as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture of a builder’s block to be displayed in that branch library. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE Area youth in grades 6th-8th can participate in the SRC by logging online the time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, each reader will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1200 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The names of participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place in August.

PEANUT BUTTER ICE CREAM PIE You could make this on National Ice Cream Pie Day August 18th!

INGREDIENTS: 2/3 cup creamy peanut butter 1/3 cup corn syrup 3 cups crushed sugar-frosted corn flake cereal 1/2 gallon coffee ice cream, softened 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup or to taste DIRECTIONS: Combine peanut butter and corn syrup in a bowl, heat in microwave until it can easily be stirred into a smooth mixture, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir crushed cereal into the peanut butter mixture, spread into a pie plate to make a crust. Spoon softened ice cream over the crust and smooth into a flat layer. Drizzle chocolate syrup over the ice cream layer. Put pie in freezer and freeze until firm in the center, at least 30 minutes. Source: http://allrecipes.com/

INGREDIENTS: 2 ounces chocolate 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup flour 1 teaspoon vanilla

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment. Nottingham Country | August 2017

Each year on August 21st, there are various events and activities held across the United States in recognition of National Senior Citizens Day. This day was created as a day to support, honor and show appreciation to our seniors and to recognize their achievements. Their valuable contributions to our communities create better places to live. On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847 declaring August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day. For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older - places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity - President Ronald Reagan. HOW TO OBSERVE To celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, spend time with the senior citizens you know. Let them know that they are appreciated and loved. It may also be a good day to volunteer at a retirement home and share your smile with those who may not otherwise get a visitor today. WATER QUALITY MONTH

Are you aware that August is Water Quality Month? August is the time of year when many people are enjoying the last bits of summer recreational activities involving water. But these bodies of water are threatened by increasing water pollution. The Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 but most people are unaware of the little ways they can pollute their water. Water sustains all life and entire ecosystems depend on it for their survival. Water Quality Month reminds us to take a long, hard look at what your household and community are doing to protect sources of fresh water. The History of Water Quality Month: The United Nations declared 2005-2015 an International Decade for Action “Water for Life” in order to emphasize the importance of water quality as it relates to sanitation, human rights, geography, urbanization and sustainability. Emphasizing how interlinked water systems are, the Audobon Society points to the dangers of runoff from agriculture, forestry, construction and people’s personal yards. Each individual household may not produce enough pollution to force a beach closing or cause a fish kill, but the combined output of all the homes in a community can be severe. And, consider that about half of the U.S. population lives within 50 miles of a coastline where runoff flows quickly to the ocean. This is why watershed protection attention not only to the body of water but the area that drains into it - is important. How to Celebrate Water Quality Month: What can individuals and families can do to prevent water pollution from their homes especially during Water Quality Month? Here’s a short list of things that you can do at home to help: • Not using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products. Regular soap and water will do the trick. Much of the antibacterial soaps contain a registered pesticide that is known to harm marine life. • Not flushing unwanted or out-of-date medications down the toilet or drain. • Not putting anything but water down storm drains because they carry water to local waterways. • Fixing leaks that drop from cars and putting liners in driveways to collect oil and other materials. • Avoid using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. • Choose nontoxic household products when possible. • Pick up after pets. • Not paving properties. If you have a private well make sure it is tested and cleaned regularly. There can be bacteria build up in wells. Read your local water quality report so you know what the water quality is in your area. Another option could be to gather a group of family, friends and neighbors and volunteer to clean a local water source. You could bring a picnic (and some beer for the adults) and hold a contest to see who can clean up the most trash and debris, offering a prize to the winning team.
