Google docs. I don't trust myself to back things up properly and I don't have a good track record with not breaking my computers.

A supportive community for writers, readers, and reccers to talk about and share FanFiction.

It has its flaws, though. At about 50k I have to open a new document to continue writing because it just gets too damn slow, so I end up with documents "story part 1," "story part 2," etc and it makes it a bear to edit properly. Plus I still haven't figured out how to get the italics and such to carry over to AO3 from GDocs without redoing it all manually.

Posting a fic? Use our Weekly Fic Showcase It's stickied at the top of the sub to provide more exposure for longer for all fics.

Google docs works pretty well for me. To keep the formatting in FF, download your google doc as .odt and then upload to FF (which saves 90% of the formatting). Then I copy and paste the google doc to AO3 and wattpad, which seems to keep the formatting. If you are having trouble with the cutting/pasting, try different browsers (I use chrome on a mac). I haven't had trouble with story size, but I have a different folder for each story and break my story up by chapter (one per file). permalink

If you cross post to FFN you can just copy and paste from there and the formatting will carry over to AO3, if not just copy and paste it to word and then from word to AO3. For some weird reason Google docs isn't compatible with AO3, but it's compatible with other platforms that are compatible to AO3 so you have to do a bit of a run around. permalink

The new rules are an expansion on Reddiquette and better state the current intentions of this subreddit. DO: Remember the Human. You can disagree and still be civil.

Post Discussion Threads. Questions about fic writing. Articles posted with question(s). Questions seeking information about a controversial or personally disliked topic are welcome.

[–] djinnequip 1 point 1 year ago

I don't have word or crosspost as of now. This is definitely a good motivator to start crossposting though. Thanks for the tips! permalink

Post fics to the appropriate Participation thread. The ‘Weekly Fic Showcase,’ ‘What Did You Post Wednesdays,’ and ‘Spotlight Sundays’ are the main venues for posting fics.

I'd suggest it, crossposting can literally hurt nothing, and give you more readers. Your only other option is to learn html code and write your story like that so the formatting has to obey. permalink

A lot less frustrating than dealing with technology hiccups just a bit tedious in transferring it from paper to online, but definitely better for editing (things slip by you less). permalink

Stories must be fanfiction, not original content. Reddit’s TOS has some wiggle-room with regard to ‘artistic works.’

Word. I'd love to start using Scrivener, but I'm an old dog, and every time I try to start a story in Scrivener, I get distracted by all the bells and whistles. Ooh, labels! Ooh, binders! Ooh, butterfly! So, yeah. Maybe one day. But for now, just one big, choppy, unorganized Word document. permalink

Scrivener. The ability to organize all my notes, scenes, outlines, and thoughts is amazing. The best part is that I'm not afraid to just write an idea because I know that I can later organize it in the same file. I can look at all my notes and images without minimizing the window. (I back up my Scrivener projects and notes on Google Docs, though, because I'm petrified of losing it all.)

To pick yours and personalize the text use the edit option by your username, just below the “subscribe” button at the top of the sidebar. Flair

I can't imagine juggling all that on Word and getting anything done. I've written A LOT on Word for like, a decade, but they were never very extensive projects. Now, though, I plan way too much to be satisfied with Word. permalink

I use word, but then if I have someone else looking at it before I post it I put it in google docs. I prefer the formatting in word and it's just what I've always used. Google docs just always seems to crash on me, but the persistent saving and share-ability is amazing.

OneNote. I have it set up so it automatically syncs whenever I make a change so I can edit it both on my laptop and when I'm on my phone. The good thing about it is that I can separate things into folders and sub-pages so I have a new page for each chapter. Makes editing easier. permalink

I'm pretty boring and use Microsoft Word and keep each chapter in folders in my documents for that specific story. It's nice to use when my internet gets very finicky (which is often when you have twc), but I'm thinking about switching to google docs so I can write on my iPad which I spend a considerable larger amount of time on. permalink

Most of my multi chapter Fics are written in a notepad then typed and edited (or dictated to) in Word 2016, stored on both Dropbox and OneDrive. Most of my one-shots are written, or dictated, straight in Word 2016. permalink

Not really, I just ram everything into one document in. An appendix chapter at the end helps to keep track of characters, smut, plot points, smut, key locations and smut. Might want to try OneNote though, even if the Appendix thingy has worked nicely so far. permalink

I used WPS Writer at first, then I got annoyed by the bugs and moved to Google Docs. Then one day my internet cut out and two hours worth of my work got lost, and that ended my relationship with Google Docs. I tried using Scrivener after people in the Discord server recommended it, but I couldn't get used to it. Now I just use MS Word. I just have to remember to save very very very regularly. permalink

My Writing Spot, it's a really simple site that lets you organize documents by colored spots in a sidebar. It's been really helpful with keeping my chapters neat. I also tend to write down random notes whenever an idea comes about and I need to get it down on paper before I forget it. This has left me with a mountain of notes for a lot of stories and even though I've finished using them I can't bear to throw them away. permalink

All my notes, outlines, and first drafts are done on paper. I also script most of the story on paper before beginning in prose. When I begin to write the story in earnest, it's typed out on Google Docs. If I've been actively writing, then I download backups of my documents every fortnight. permalink

I really like FocusWriter. About mid-2015 I hit a huge lack of motivation and I went looking for a full-screen writer to try and fight my distraction. I tried Zen Writer, but I had issues with it being hard to edit. While I was looking through programs like ZenWriter, I found FocusWriter. It has daily goals which I've kept up since then, a timer, is full screen and has customizable backgrounds. It also has tabs and word count right at the bottom, so it's easy to keep track of my progress. I do a lot of editing in google docs, but I find I work better when not connected to the net. permalink
